Steele to Rush: I’m sorry; Update: Beck, Coulter knock Steele; Update: DNC chair hits Steele

posted at 6:36 pm on March 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

Rahm Emanuel yesterday:

Mr. Limbaugh has “called for President Obama to fail. That’s his view,” Mr. Emanuel said. “And whenever a Republican criticizes him, they have to run back and apologize to him and say they were misunderstood.”

Michael Steele today:

“My intent was not to go after Rush – I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh,” Steele said in a telephone interview. “I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. … There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.”…

“I went back at that tape and I realized words that I said weren’t what I was thinking,” Steele said…

“He brings a very important message to the American people to wake up and pay attention to what the administration is doing,” Steele said. “Number two, there are those out there who want to look at what he’s saying as incendiary and divisive and ugly. That’s what I was trying to say. It didn’t come out that way. … He does what he does best, which is provoke: He provokes thought, he provokes the left. And they’re clearly the ones who are most excited about him.”

Asked if he planned to apologize, Steele said: “I wasn’t trying to offend anybody. So, yeah, if he’s offended, I’d say: Look, I’m not in the business of hurting people’s feelings here. … My job is to try to bring us all together.”

Rush’s fans will hold Steele in contempt for criticizing him in the first place and Rush’s critics will hold him in contempt for apologizing now. Well played, sir. Exit question: Whose contrition was more groveling, Steele’s or Phil Gingrey’s?

Update: Coulter repeats the boss’s point from earlier today about how it’s perfectly okay to criticize Rush. Since when? Did CPAC pass a resolution?

Update: Rod Dreher skewers Steele: “Please Rush, don’t hurt me!”

Update: Tim Kaine seizes the moment:

“I was briefly encouraged by the courageous comments made my counterpart in the Republican Party over the weekend challenging Rush Limbaugh as the leader of the Republican Party and referring to his show as ‘incendiary’ and ‘ugly.’ However, Chairman Steele’s reversal this evening and his apology to Limbaugh proves the unfortunate point that Limbaugh is the leading force behind the Republican Party, its politics and its obstruction of President Obama’s agenda in Washington.”

Rush’s fans will hold Steele in contempt for criticizing him in the first place

There’s plenty of other reason for contempt of him. The real question is, how long before party loyalists start calling those who criticize Steele “RACIST!!!”

MadisonConservative on March 2, 2009 at 6:37 PM

The Rush stuff doesn’t bother me as much as agreeing that CPAC looked too much like Nazi Germany.

these republicans need to get a clue, and get a backbone, and learn from the MASTER, rush, how to fight…

You still owe an apology to conservatives, Steele, and you won’t get jack from me until you do. I’m not a Nazi you fud.

“I’m not going to engage these guys and sit back and provide them the popcorn for a fight between me and Rush Limbaugh,” Steele added. “No such thing is going to happen. … I wasn’t trying to slam him or anything.”

Excellent. I’m ready to move on.

Let’s “play nice” boys.

DrStock on March 2, 2009 at 6:40 PM

Steele doesn’t seem to understand that it wasn’t that he insulted Rush. He insulted all of us who understand conservativism and what is happening in our country, today. Steele owes an apology to all conservatives.

Now, I’m really not into apologies, myself. I want to see action. For Steele, this means that he has to, either, start steering the RNC to true conservativism and stop spending their time being Dem-lites or resign and let someone who knows what they’re doing take over the RNC.

I am very disappointed in Steele. I used to love him when he showed up on Fox. He was a very good debater and held sound reasoning for most issues that I heard him opine on. Since he’s taken over the RNC, he has been an unmitigated disaster. What a shame.

progressoverpeace on March 2, 2009 at 6:40 PM

Steele didnt grovel. He is just stuck on stupid

William Amos on March 2, 2009 at 6:40 PM

Look, it sucks, but better to put the matter behind us and let the news cycle continue. Any party division is a bad thing, and it’s never a good idea for the chief party fundraiser to piss off the base.

I would hope that Steele realizes that going on a talk show with Chuck D and DL Hughley is really not part of a good strategy, and maybe Rush can fire shots at Democrat targets from here out.

KingGold on March 2, 2009 at 6:40 PM

HAHAHA…Oh what a great choice for RNC chair. God you guys look like chumps. Every time a “conservative” kisses Rushes ring its makes it easier for us liberals to call him the head of your party/movement. Which is exactly what we want.

Terry Silver on March 2, 2009 at 6:41 PM

allah you are a fool

kara26 on March 2, 2009 at 6:41 PM

You know, I take that back, I don’t want an apology. If Steele didn’t fight back against such a stupid comment then either he is a clueless panderer or he really believes it.

Either way, it’s a loss and Steele is a dimwit.

Resign or be prosecuted. (name that movie)

Bishop on March 2, 2009 at 6:41 PM

While I’m a huge fan of Rush he should avoid this conflict b/c he is risking doing much more damage than good here, we can’t afford to have people turn on Steele.

lavell12 on March 2, 2009 at 6:41 PM

Michael Steele is weak and lame. Doing the Hippy-Hoppy world is asinine. Saying he was “disappointed” that Obama signed the Porkulus bill is limp wristed.

Can’t the RNC find someone who actually has a steel spine?

No $$$ for light weights, I received my RNC donation letter and it flushes well.

portlandon on March 2, 2009 at 6:42 PM

Whose contrition was more groveling, Steele’s or Phil Gingrey’s?

The more prominent the job, the more groveling, it seems. That said, if he can’t think on his feet any better than he did, why is he in this position? Looked to me like he was worried more about what D.L. Hughley thought of him than what we do.

Cinday Blackburn on March 2, 2009 at 6:43 PM

Steele never should have been RNC Chair. He isnt an organizer he is a message manager. The last thing the GOP needs is someone who thinks that the GOP’s problem is it’s message.

That is what the Obamites want. To sell the silly idea that their stupid message is better.

William Amos on March 2, 2009 at 6:43 PM

swatter on March 2, 2009 at 6:44 PM

Watched that CNN clip again, can’t believe how arrogant Steele sounded. Besides letting Nazi comment pass (more than enough reason to resing imho) he goes on to say “I am the De-Facto leader of the GOP”….

Where does he get his nerve? Did anyone consider former RNC Chair Jim Nicholson the “De-Facto leader of the GOP” in the late 90s?

Norwegian on March 2, 2009 at 6:45 PM

I can only repeat from another thread the words of William Wallace in Braveheart, “Men don’t follow titles; they follow courage.”

The rest is bull$hit.

Strangely enough Obama proved this by getting elected. His followers thought they were following courage – the courage to hope and the courage to demand change.

Mr_Magoo on March 2, 2009 at 6:45 PM

I think what Steele did was foolish – there are plenty of Democrats he can shoot with the limited numbers of bullets republicans have in the revolver at the moment.

Still – I don’t want to see him resign. He just started the job and should be given an opportunity to excel here before canning him.

But … he needs to realize that he leads a CONSERVATIVE party and, if he wishes to keep the Republican base, and the Republican MESSAGE – the very thing we have to offer to America – then he won’t make any attempts to roll to the liberal side.

Unapologetic Conservative. That’s what he needs to be. Don’t let the media rip our leaders – RIP THEM.

I wonder if Steele is going to find a horse’s head in his bed tonight.

BuckeyeSam on March 2, 2009 at 6:47 PM

Steele: c as incendiary and divisive and ugly. That’s what I was trying to say. It didn’t come out that way. …

So Allahpundit to say he is groveling is to say he is lying about this coming out wrong. SO which is it since you are the one making the accusation…

Did He mean to say it was “ugly” and then backtrack or is he tellng the truth when he says he omitted saying

“there are those out there who want to look at what he’s saying as incendiary and divisive and ugly.”

Which is is it because I can believe either but I would not bet my rep on either one like you.

Has anyone else noticed that as Rush Limbaugh has gained in popularity over the past few years, the Republican Party has been losing elections?

Atlanta Voter on March 2, 2009 at 6:55 PM

I totally reject the notion that a conservative when forced to explain the statement “I want him to fail,” must fundamentally take out one of their own that has backed him when he has been attacked by the very forces attack his supporter. Why? Is conservativism ugly and dirty and something to be ashamed of out in public? If it is and the head of the RNC agrees he needs to act that way, then we are truly done as a Party. Why bother being a part of something so disgusting. I need to pack up my wares and go somewhere else.

I’ll repeat what was said again: As the DOW closes at 6,763.29 down 299 points in a single day, who was right? Prior to the election? Was it Brooks, Frum, or Buckley? And as AIG becomes, again, too big to fail and those in government talk about a global solution, who was right? So, how many times do you have to be wrong before I’m supposed to stop listening to you? Right now I have my hands over my ears and I’m going, “blah, blah, blah…” Conservativism doesn’t have to be bent and molded and shaped. Conservative is and always will be. If you think you’re a conservative and you feel you have to apologize and explain it to others, you don’t need to be in any Leadership position. If you have to be nice to the opposition as they completely DESTROY the country you love then you are lost in a wilderness you will NEVER get out of. Simply put, if you don’t want them to fail, what EXACTLY DO YOU WANT? What is your point in existing? Why should I support you and give my hard earned dollars that the opposition is trying to confiscate from me to YOU? If the opposition can say we’ve lost a war, our soldiers are murderers, our President is a liar and still get re-elected, why is it that we must not say the very policies we supposedly abhor should fail? If you won’t fight and defend the VERY PRINCIPALS you profess to believe in because you want to look dignified, noble, and honorable in a gentlemen’s club sort of fashion, what use are you? What does your niceties get me? How does it help my family, my business, the country? Do you REALLY want ANY of what the Democrats are offering to succeed?

IN WHAT SPECIFIC WAYS DO YOU WANT PRES. OBAMA TO SUCCEED IN? WHAT SPECIFIC ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL POLICIES DO YOU AGREE WITH THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SEE SUCCEED? THEN, REPEAT AGAIN, ARE YOU SURE YOU’RE A CONSERVATIVE? AND IF YOU’RE NOT, WHAT EXACTLY IS THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND WHO EXACTLY IS RUNNING IT? I’D LIKE TO KNOW SO I CAN BETTER DECIDE WHETHER I WANT TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT YOU ALL WITH MY DOLLARS OR MY VOTE. OR WHETHER I OUGHT TO LEAVE AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. BECAUSE IF RUSH IS UGLY THEN I MUST BE UGLY TOO, AND I DON’T STAY WHERE I’M NOT WELCOME AND I DON’T SUPPORT POLITICAL MOVEMENTS THAT DON’T OVERWHELMING AGREE WITH MY IDEALS.

Lastly, I want to know EXACTLY what Rush said that makes him so contemptible to certain so-called members of the Vast Right Wing? If you want to take over the RNC/GOP, go right ahead. But why don’t you be clear about exactly what it is you mean to have us represent. It’s like a wolf in sheep’s clothing and it’s out of the Democrat playbook. Don’t say exactly what you represent just spend your time putting down everyone else who dares to profess their political views, philosophies, and policies ideas. Go ahead, tell us how you see the Party. Chicken sh!ts. You start sounding just like Democrats more and more each day. No bother. We have the end result already. I’m just going to sit on the sidelines now and watch. Because you all that think it was okay for Steele to say it’s ‘ugly’ to say he wants Obama to fail will have to be the ones answering for a DOW at 3,000 and why we still need NOT say we want the Pres. to fail. Unless you’re into that sort of thing, then have at it. I wonder how long you get the support you so readily seek. Not very long in my estimation. Even Liberals like their pensions and 401ks to be robust!

The past election was a classic case of “lemmings to the sea”. The non-lemmings still aspire to greater prosperity and freedom.

Use the media. Don’t let the media use you, Mr. Steele!

SouthernGent on March 2, 2009 at 6:55 PM

So if your getting your ass handed to election after election by “retards, etc” what does that make you?

Terry Silver on March 2, 2009 at 6:49 PM

Someone who lives amongst a majority of undereducated retards…duh. Damn, you must be one of them not to see that.

Has anyone else noticed that as Rush Limbaugh has gained in popularity over the past few years, the Republican Party has been losing elections?

Ew, already down to talking point #5, and it’s so early in the night!

No, because it’s not true. His listening audience dropped ( a wee bit) over the last few years and has recently began to surge again.

1994? 1996? 1998? 2000? 2002?

Has anyone else noticed that as Clinton gained in popularity, the Democrat Party kept losing elections?

Victims of widespread leftist retardation?

Whats funny is that you people (”conservatives”) don’t even realize what your up against yet. You are never getting back into the mainstream again. 2008 will seem like a good year to you in ten years. You are losing support in every battleground state. You are losing support in every demographic. Your “ideas/ideals” are losing support across the country. I would say do us all a favor and go away, but the remaining minority of you are just too much fun to watch as you eat your own. You will try to prescribe many remedies to stop the bleeding, but they are all futile. I look forward to the next 50 years of progressive/liberal expansion.

Terry Silver on March 2, 2009 at 6:57 PM

HAHAHA…Oh what a great choice for RNC chair. God you guys look like chumps. Every time a “conservative” kisses Rushes ring its makes it easier for us liberals to call him the head of your party/movement. Which is exactly what we want.

Terry Silver on March 2, 2009 at 6:41 PM

“liberal” is a dirty word, in the US as well as around the world. It is often associated with political dementia and destructive economic policies – for a very good reason. What are you so proud of, again ?

Wasn’t it a week or so ago that Mark Sanford was quoted as saying that anyone who wanted Obama to fail is an idiot?
KickandSwimMom on March 2, 2009 at 6:51 PM

The media hacked his statement where Sanford went on to list all Obama’s policies as being bad. Rush recognized it as Sanford agreed with him but was just avoiding a money quote they are looking for. Sanford’s “idiot” comment really was him sorting out the media person’s question into parts where part 1) No one wants the country to fail 2) nothing Obama is doing is helpful and mostly harmful. Hack it up media style and you get typical media trying to split the party from Rush.

Conan on March 2, 2009 at 6:57 PM

Coulter repeats the boss’s point from earlier today about how it’s perfectly okay to criticize Rush. Since when?

Nobody’s allowed to criticize the criticism? I thought that was how it worked.

Jim Treacher on March 2, 2009 at 6:57 PM

Allah is an atheist.

He’s also one of the problems with the Republican Party.

Yes, purge the unbeliever! Not only does he diverge from your preferred fairytale but he also occasionally makes you defend bits of republican orthodoxy. Inexcusable! Ignore the fact that being forced to support your position can only either make your defense of it stronger or cause you to realize that it should be abandoned. Kind of win-win imo…but proceed with your frothing

Jim on March 2, 2009 at 6:57 PM

Steele is such a hypocrit. I say “millions for local politicians, not one penny for steele and the RNC” This elitist attitude on display by the national party is destroying what little credibility we have left.

Those who thought he was a good choice to lead the RNC should hang their heads in shame. He is same oh same oh and we know where that got us. We need a change in RNC leadership. Lets find a conservative this time.

kanda on March 2, 2009 at 6:57 PM

Sounds like Steele had an “Oh Crap” moment when he suddenly realized that he had just managed to completely piss off a large proportion of the Republican parties conservative base. I bet the angry emails and phone calls to his office have been flowing hard and fast all day.
