Russian paper: Obama ready to trade European missile shield for Russian help with Iran?
posted at 7:19 pm on March 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
Via Closing Velocity. I’m skeptical, but only because of the source, not the logic.
Washington has told Moscow that Russian help in resolving Iran’s nuclear program would make its missile shield plans for Europe unnecessary, a Russian daily said on Monday, citing White House sources.
U.S. President Barack Obama made the proposal on Iran in a letter to his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, Kommersant said, referring to unidentified U.S. officials…
Moscow has not yet responded to the proposal by Obama, the paper said, adding that a decision was unlikely to be made during Lavrov and Clinton’s meeting.
A senior U.S. official confirms that a letter was sent but won’t say what was in it. No surprise that The One’s ready for rapprochement with Russia: As I recall, part of the left’s logic last summer in kinda sorta defending Russian action in Georgia was that the U.S. had forced a confrontational posture on the Kremlin by pursuing missile defense and integrating eastern European countries into NATO. If, unlike me, you take that logic seriously and believe that Vladimir Putin’s ambitions are mainly defensive, it makes sense to de-escalate even at the cost of leaving some of those eastern European countries exposed. Two questions, though: How, exactly, is Russia going to help, and what happens to the missile shield if Iran ends up with the bomb anyway? If this is a way to get them to be more rigorous in applying UN sanctions internally, that’s great, but is there any reason to believe that’ll stop Iran’s nuke program rather than just slow it down? And if the effort fails, do we then get to install the shield without Russian protest? That would, at least, create a meaningful incentive for them to help. Exit question: Maybe Geraghty’s wrong about all Obama campaign promises coming with an expiration date, huh?

Blowback

And so how does this matter except to the Europeans? Iran has those centrifuges spinning 24/7. All the Iranian reactor does a take a really big bomb and make it into a really really big bomb. The problem does not move.
Remember, we built WWII bombs without reactors.

Damn, I’m actually surprised we aren’t cutting out the middle-man and selling nukes directly to Iran (Big Savings!) at this point…and yeah, this administration is going to be making friends with all kinds of ‘interesting’ regimes in the next 4 years. Putin is a dangerous man — he should not be underestimated, and Obama is playing with serious fire here if he gives into this proposal; that is, if the report is accurate.

This on the day after his Secretary of State tells the world that negotiations with Iran are not working, and doubts Iran will respond to offers of talks ?
So, then, what is to be gained by having Russia’s “help” if our Secretary of State has already made it a matter of record talking to Iran won’t do any good?
Then, where will our allies in Europe…New Europe…really be? Left hanging in the lurch once again…like Georgia was left last summer and all Obama could do was to stop body surfing long enough to tell both sides to stop it?
That missile shield is not only for Iranian missiles…Syria, Hamas, AQ, heck, Pakistan, even if things go south or any other combination of fanatic/jihad/and missile capable (self-built or bought) sending incoming from that part of the world would be the focus of that shield Obama now thinks is not at all that important.

This was from the times article that confirmed Iran has enough low enriched uranium to create enough Highly enriched uranium for a bomb.
The Obama administration is deep into a series of foreign and national security policy reviews, including how to manage relations with Iran, which overlaps with how Washington deals with other foreign partners and rivals.
For example, a view is emerging within the administration of a possible way to link a compromise on missile defense with Russia to diplomatic progress in halting Iran’s nuclear program
The United States says its planned missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic are needed to guard against a potential Iranian nuclear attack, while Russia vehemently complains that those systems are designed to thwart the Russian arsenal.
Obama administration officials may propose that if Russia wants the United States to rethink its plans for building two missile defense sites in Europe, then the Kremlin must do more to help halt Iran’s nuclear program.

There is something to be said for the necessity of Russian input in this whole thing, however. Like North Korea, a truly bellicose nation needs a gatekeeper…a sponsor who will provide cover for as long as it can before arousing simply too much suspicion. At that point, as other states close ranks, the inevitable calculations begin, as to what happens if this state fails. Usually around the time they count the potential refugee flows they give and start to tighten the strings. just enough to diffuse the immediate situation, mind you, but it gets toned down nonetheless.
i fail to see how the US unilaterally fixes this situation in a way that doesnt create more problems than it solves. the russians, believe it or not, have an interest in a calm central asia that provides risk free travel for its oil and natural gas. why leave them on the sideline?

Spent a lifetime working the Soviet target, political as well as military, and maybe one day, we might be able to fashion some sort of mutually beneficial policy with Russia that would allow both of us to lower the gates a bit.
But, with Tsar Vladimir I in charge in Moscow…not for one minute will he do anything that will stabilize any part of the world that is not already Russia. He requires the tension to keep his own flock together, especially after he miscalculated the oil market and overspent Russia’s budget for the next couple years, most of it on graft to keep his minions in tow. There is a term used in Russia…”siliviki” (those with power) and this describes the oligarchs loyal to Putin. Their loyalty depends on cash. In the absence of cash, Putin offers threats to his regime. Both have good efficacy for Putin.
Russia has been a primary provider to the Iranian nuke program since the mullahs restarted it decades ago. They’ve made a small fortune in selling overpriced components on the open market to Iran, annd a lot more from blackmarket sales, and have routinely provided on the ground technical experts all along the way.
The only “stable” Central Asia Russia will tolerate is a Central Asia once again totally under Russian control.
They’ve already purchased their insurance from Iran…Iran’s target is Israel, and Europe so long as Europe goes along with US attempts to stop Iran, and, if need be, and they get the opportunity, us.

This sounds like an admission by Russia that it does indeed have plans for what to do with this “arsenal,” and that involves pointing it westward. Like at the countries it still feels should be in its “sphere of influence,” insead of the West? This is a missile defense system to guard against incoming missiles. Just whose is Russia admitting it might stop?

winston on March 2, 2009 at 7:55 PM
One of the scariest aspects of the Obama administration is that they believe their own rhetoric. A more pragmatic leftist, like Clinton, would have leveled with his foreign policy team and admitted that he was not going to do anything to stop Iran from getting their bomb. Regardless of what hogswallop was prepared for public consumption, foreign policy could then have been conducted accordingly. It would have been small comfort to whoever got a front-row seat at the first act of nuclear terrorism, but at least the U.S. could have kept a few cards in its hand.
Obama seems to think he really can sweet-talk Iran out of its number-one policy objective, which it pursues with (literally) religious devotion. There is absolutely nothing the West, or Russia, could offer Iran that would persuade them to set this goal aside. A program announced to the world with gyrating dancers in candy-colored hazmat suits, dancing around with glowing plutonium props, is not being placed on the table as a bargaining chip. They’ll take anything Obama is foolish enough to offer them, but at the end of the day, they’ll have their bomb.
The worst mistake made by the postwar generation was assuming they could create a civilization that did not have enemies.

But Barak Obama and his inner circle know EXACTLY what they are doing. All of the pieces fall cleanly into place if you just repeat these three words: Nation of Islam. Obama plans to destroy “White America” and impose a new regime. After the dust settles, if America’s GDP ends up a third or a fourth of what it is right now, that’s perfectly fine.
And if Russia bullies “White Europe” into submission in the meantime, so much the better.
