Limbaugh rips Steele for calling his show “ugly”; Update: Longer excerpt added; Update: Audio added
posted at 3:30 pm on March 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
No transcript or audio yet, but Matt Lewis has bits and pieces. The media’s going to wet itself at the prospect of a conservative civil war, so here’s the first post of doubtless many more to come.
“The Republican National Committee and Michael Steele need a little leadership … we’re going to have to drag them kicking and screaming back to our core,” Limbaugh said. “They are caught up in so much fear because of where they live and work in Washington, DC,” he said.
Responding to Steele’s argument that he is the “de facto” head of the GOP, Limbaugh warned: “Michael Steele — you are head of the RNC — you are not head of the Republican Party.” Limbaugh went on to say Steele would have to become President for that to happen. He also noted: “… I’m not in charge of the Republican Party, and I don’t want to be.”
There’s more at the link, although you’d benefit from watching the video of Steele criticizing him first if you missed it yesterday. My point then, and Ace’s point today, is that pandering to centrists is a political fact of life for politicians. Steele and Cantor, when forced to choose between criticizing Limbaugh and having to explain his “I hope he fails” rhetoric over and over again, will take the former every time: Right-wing partisans will turn out against Obama anyway in four years but the middle has to be wooed, and defending a sentiment about failure in the current political climate while The One’s busy framing himself as Mr. Nonpartisan does not a winning “moderate” message make. No wonder Gibbs is urging the media to keep asking Republicans whether they agree with Limbaugh. If they say yes, they’re vindictive partisans and if they say no they’ll get hammered by Rush on his show. The upshot:
“Steele is playing with fire,” said one longtime Republican adviser close to House Republicans and both Bush families. Of concern is that Steele, the party’s first black chairman, will be attacked by Limbaugh and other talk show hosts, further splitting the party…
Republicans are concerned that a feud between the national party and conservative talk radio would upset donors, who would stop giving to the party. “One possible outcome is that giving by the base, sickly for the last few years, could get even worse,” said a key GOP donor. Steele’s supporters, however, say that he is not trying to pick a fight with conservative radio and is just trying to counter Democratic charges that Limbaugh—who has engaged in a verbal war with President Obama—is the de facto boss of the party. He is also trying to put the word out there that the GOP is open to other viewpoints.
Exit question via Ace: Why is Rush taking this personally? He knows the political game that’s being played here and why Steele, in his leadership role, has to navigate away from hyperpartisan rhetoric. For that matter, why is he so insistent on challenging Steele’s claim to be the current head of the GOP? Who else is it if not him?
Update: With all due love and respect for the boss, I think she’s in the extreme minority of the conservative base these days if she truly believes “there’s nothing wrong with criticizing Rush Limbaugh.” I’m not sure why she’s reading Steele labeling Rush an “entertainer” so derisively, either. Hugh Hewitt, among others, also calls him that. Steele’s point, I thought, wasn’t that there’s something wrong with entertainers but merely that our expectations of their rhetoric have to be calibrated accordingly. Part of being an entertainer is being provocative or “incendiary.” That’s all he was saying.
Update: The Plum Line has an extended passage from the show. A taste:
When you send those fundraising requests out, Mr. Steele, make sure you say, we — we — we want Obama to succeed. So people understand your compassion. Republicans, conservatives are sick and tired of being talked down to, sick and tired of being lectured to. And until you show some understanding and respect for who they are, you’re going to have a tough time rebuilding your party.
Update: Matt Lewis has the audio.

I don’t see it as Rush taking anything personally. He is trying to wake people up to the menace of Obama and his cabal of Americanized Marxists.
What Michael Steele has done is reveal that he will appease the Czarbie Moonbat members of the fruit loop brigades. He needs to step down. Attitudes like his is exactly why the GOP is in shambles.
I didn’t bleed for this Nation in the and boxes “over there” just to come home in 2004 and “work with” cowards and people of no principle.
Resign Michael. Do the right thing.

It was Rush’s way of knocking him down a peg, AND telling him to get to work on what he was selected to do.

Just moments ago on the air, Rush uncorked a rant that undoubtedly sent tremors through RNC headquarters.
“I’m not in charge of the Republican Party, and I don’t want to be,” Rush said. “I would be embarrassed to say that I’m in charge of the Republican Party in a sad-sack state that it’s in. If I were chairman of the Republican Party, given the state that it’s in, I would quit.”
… “Republicans and conservatives are sick and tired of being talked down to, they’re sick and tired of being lectured to,” Rush continued. “And until you show some understanding and respect for who they are, you’re gonna have a tough time rebuilding your party.”
I can’t argue against that.

One other thing steele did with his, “it gets ugly”, comment. He gave ammunition to the left for the fairness doctrine. The guy picked to run the rnc actually is aiding and abetting a move to limit free speach.
I’m starting to think the game has been over for awhile and we are just now figuring it out.

Actually, Ann told Beck she was disappointed in Steele as she thought he had been doing so well with the media until this unnecessary misstep.
During today’s radio show, Rush also smacked Joe Scarborough around like a donkey pinata for being another Obama appeaser, pointing out how he changed his tune since the 1994 Gingrich revolution that put him in Congress. Rush told a Scarborough listener to call Joe back tomorrow and ask him to specifically identify the Obama proposals that he — Scarborough — agrees with.
Rush on a roll!

Steele is wrong. How many times have we heard the same remarks he made stated by the democrats? Cowardly and pandering- I’m so disappointed in him; I thought he would be great. Agree or disagree with Rush, at least he’s not a coward.

Why does Steel apologizing to Rush have to be groveling? A “True” apology gives respect to the person injured and a sincere acceptance of the apology gives that respect back. The problem here is we have all grown too accustom with this “I’m not really taking responsibility for my actions, but if I have offended anyone, I am sorry”, type of apology crap. I believe both Steel and Rush are big enough men to shake hands.

Moderates, e.g. the people who know nothing, are not even paying attention to politics except a few months before a mid-term or Presidential election. And they certainly aren’t listening to Michael Steele try and triangulate around some statement by Rush Limbaugh.
It just shows that people who play defense, e.g. not attacking their opponent, are the loosers. Steele is just another whining minority. He is certainly not a conservative or a Republican.
Rush is correct here. Obama will fail and I hope he fails. No moderate in the middle is paying attention to this unless some RINO brings it up. If Steele had not brought this up, it would have been a one day story, now he is giving the radical leftwing media a story with legs.
Steele has to get a backbone and start critisizing the Obama Regime not Rush. What person attacks his allies? Stupid is as stupid does. Just another Arlen Spector.

I’ve always voted…but I’m beginning to wonder…if the party who supposedly holds values and vision that is closest to my own, even when elected, seems intent on furthering the agenda of those I oppose, what point does it serve to waste my time? I can’t consider a third party, so far they are a joke, and there isn’t one out there who comes to close to promoting the ideals I believe in. I’ll go ahead and say it, unless the GOP shapes up and shows me something concrete, something substantial, to reassure me, that they are not Democrat Light, then I’ll not cast another vote in a national election, much less offer any campaign contribution to any national candidate.
I’ll sit here and watch it all go to hell, the US government needs me more than I need it.
BadMojo on March 2, 2009 at 6:18 PM
First, Rush does not set policy, he defines HIS conservative views…we can take it or ignore it…just so happens that millions take it. Tens of millions have selected him to state many of their views.
Since most of us are not “wordsmiths”, nor do we have a forum to proclaim our beliefs, we, through a process of elimination, have chosen someone to speak for the millions. Others also speak for many others, they also have a large following.
My advice Steele, is to listen to these pundits (and the callers), they are at the top of the game because they don’t offend, but defend…they don’t comply with your rules, but supply us with information…they don’t “reach out” to the other aisle, but define programs that forces the other side to reach out to us, or screech out about us.
What are your ratings Steele? Is the path you taking to get more Republican votes are as popular with other Republicans, or are you just concerned what others think about you…
We are looking for leaders with a backbone, not backstabbers.

Another few billion to AIG, and God knows what else down the pike, are you crazy? I want to turn it around on them. That’s exactly what everyone should be asking, “What Obama Administration policy do you agree with Senator? What economic process do you agree with Representative? What Congressional Bill do you support Republican Chairperson?” I freaking want to know! I want them on record support the opposition while they’re tearing down a guy who has millions of listeners/fans. See how long they last. I want to know EXACTLY who my representatives are once and for all. I suspect there are quiet a few non-conservatives in our ranks and as Rush said, “The RNC Chair should be working on closing up the open primaries across the nation so that Democrats aren’t picking our leaders!” This has been going on LONG ENOUGH! That’s simply even sadder because it just proves that the head of the RNC doesn’t get his own base. *sigh* Another very long 2 to 4 years, possibly 8 if we don’t walk away now.
Someone said something vis-a-vie California that I think is, unfortunately, valid across the board right now. It’s time for the parents to be parents. It’s time for some tough love. It’s time to close up the purses, change the locks on the door, and boot the kids out to fend for themselves for the first time. Stay in mommies home until your 30 is no longer feasible. We have to get back to basics and they just need to learn how to start taking care of themselves. With tough love means we’re going to have to be okay to see it all fail. As for the state I’m living in, we’ll vote no on ALL BOND MEASURES. We’ll send them packing and if they don’t lean up their budget we’ll let it fail, we’ll let it go insolvent. We’ll let it come crumbling down. Because we all know that until that happens, it’s just that much longer to get to the business of clean up the mess. Just release your grip and let it fall to the ground. We’re Americans. We’re the best and make something better from things that seem destroyed and irreparable. That is when we’re at our best. We need to get back to our best again.
Sultry Beauty on March 2, 2009 at 6:33 PM
It appears we are doomed to play defense, and loose.
I wish we learned from the dems. They never apologize. Instead, they figure out how to turn every potentially damaging situation into an advantage.
- They turned the Jefferson scandal into a Republican embarrassment because the feds had a warrant to search his office.
- They turned “memogate” (which showed illegal collusion between the Dems and leftist groups) into a Repub scandal because some staffer discovered the memos.
And they do this with every one of their embarrassments.
I had hoped that Steele would lead the way in getting the Republicans to play this game right. I no longer have that hope.

And finally, Mr. Steele, we do like to entertain people here. The audience is very smart, sir. They know the difference between entertainment, and they know the difference between deadly serious issues that affect their country. Don’t underestimate the intelligence of this audience or Republicans and conservatives generally. The biggest problem with all of you who live inside the Beltway is you look out over America and you think you see idiocy and unsophisticated people, ignorant people, and when you’re looking at liberal Democrats, largely you’re correct, but your own voters are every bit as informed, involved, engaged, and caring, if not more so than you are. We don’t care, first and foremost, about the success of the Republican Party. We care about the United States of America and its future, because we cherish it and love it, and we know what it is that made it the greatest nation on earth, and we don’t hear you articulating that you understand that, not just you, Mr. Steele, but hardly anybody else in Washington, DC. So send those fundraising requests out, and, by the way, when you send those fundraising requests out, Mr. Steele, make sure you say, “We want Obama to succeed.” So people understand your compassion. Republicans, conservatives, are sick and tired of being talked down to, sick and tired of being lectured to, and until you show some understanding and respect for who they are, you’re going to have a tough time rebuilding your party.
Dead on accurate.
getalife,
Simple question for you… Are you aware of what President Obama and his party is doing to our economy right now? I’m dead serious with this question. You Liberals should be policing your own if you are true Americans. We do it; when one of our own falls prey to corruption or just plain stupidity, we demand for their removal from office. My biggest complaint with Liberals is that you people let your politicians get away with behavior that you know is corrupt, dishonest, and bad for America.

But Allah Ace Steele and the rest of the RINOs don’t acknowledge that their theory has been put to the test, and failed, very recently.
On the other hand, winners like Reagan and (regretably) Obama realize that the game is to bring the squishy middle to the party, not vice versa.
Sorry to say, Steele is a failure. As a spokesman for conservatives, is an apologist, not a salesman. Apologizing to the clueless middle never works.

It’s sad for the Republican party that no one can criticize Rush without having to be hauled out for this sort of humiliation a day or so later. But for Steele not to have realized that or not to have been sufficiently in control of his mouth to avoid saying this just shows once again that this dude is really, really not ready for prime time.”

That it was those damn open primaries that resulted in me not even getting a vote. He then asked me what an open party was and I explained to him that it meant that anybody could vote regardless of party affiliation. He then said wow, I didn’t know that.
Open primaries are the problem. We didn’t get “our” guy, we got what the independents and democrats wanted. Not having our guy meant that we didn’t work hard or at all to get the parties chosen candidate elected. He wasn’t our guy, many of us didn’t even get a chance to register a preference.
We need to keep hammering the RNC until they get the damn message. NO OPEN PRIMARIES. Again and again and again.
A wise member of our party once said something about bold colors and that is what the GOP needs if it wants to be the majority party again.

Just because Rahm (on Sunday news rounds) didn’t mention that Howard Dean is whining about not getting HHS, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Pelosi & Reid are whining at Obama for not pulling out all the troops right now. Dems are upset at Obama for limiting Charity Donation tax cuts, surging troops, etc.

True, I find it incredible how inept the Pubs are at public relations. They are never prepared for the obvious questions, they can never counter with a clever response, they can never speak in plain terms what we’re up against. They are just absolutely pathetic.
They are in sore need of a marketing makeover, instead of tax cuts how about a flat tax?
Think McDonald’s, they make the same damn burger but they tweak the commercials and change the wrapping every few years. The principle is the Big Mac, the packaging is the message. :)

are all the anti-Steelites plants? I don’t fall for that subterfuge ever. I’d rather draw liberal blood than Limbaugh or Steele blood.

According to the AP

There you go Republicans, he wants to do what you want to do as well, undo the Reagan revolution, what a bunch of tools the GOP has become.

Mr. Steele can easily clear up the divide with Conservatives by announcing that the GOP will looking to replace Sen. Specter, Snowe and Collins…By doing this he will put the GOP on notice and will rally the voters at the same time and talk about praise from Rush Limbaugh…it would be non-stop.
We have to remove the RINO’s from the GOP.

Another good day for Democrats (according to getalife); to the rest of us this was simply another day and another corrupt POS Democrat getting caught being a corrupt POS… From Powerlineblog.com
This time it’s Ron Kirk, nominated by President Obama as U.S. Trade Representative:
Kirk owes an estimated $10,000 in back taxes from earlier in the decade and has agreed to pay them, the Senate Finance Committee said Monday. The committee said the taxes arise from Kirk’s handling of speaking fees he donated to a scholarship fund that he set up at his alma mater, and for his deduction of the full cost of season tickets to the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team.
The Democratic Party has a culture of entitlement, greed and corruption. It is remarkable that, even though Obama’s vetting team must be excruciatingly sensitive to the issue, it is evidently hard to find prominent, high-income Democrats who pay their taxes in full.

All four members of my family have sent our sentiments to Mr. Steele; hope all of you do the same…

Marshall has moved on from the “during Katrina” smear, I see. One canard at a time.
Jim Treacher on March 2, 2009 at 8:54 PM
Oh come on, now! You? Clueless? I guess so.
Steele is not the head of the party, thank goodness. If he is, he’s thead of a complete failure at this point.
the GOP is either the conservative party, or it is nothing. At the moment, it (and Steele, as pointed out here) are pandering to the center which, by definition, means that it is not the conservative party.
Center does not equal, even in your dreams, conservative.
If Steele is going to play the same centrist, grow the party by joining someone else’s tent, crap… then he needs to fail, and fail as fast as possible, so we can get someone else in there.

Can no one in politics give a genuine apology? Steele’s version was a complete joke. He was just “inarticulate”? He wasn’t “going after Rush”? Please.
In Michael Steele, we have yet again a “leader” who is not a leader. I’m thinking that’s not good.
varnson on March 2, 2009 at 9:23 PM
Rush is right. There’s no point in debating it.
