CNN: Limbaugh’s angry, sinister speech “crossed a line”
posted at 12:32 pm on March 1, 2009 by Allahpundit
I haven’t had time to watch the speech but doubtless those who have will have plenty to say in response in the comments. I did see that Rush revisited his point about wanting The One to fail, which gives the media ample excuse to run with it, sans context, for another week. Stephanopoulos used it to make Cantor squirm on “This Week” this morning and Rahm Emanuel took full advantage by painting the GOP as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rush Inc. All part of the strategy to make the party’s approval rating among independents look like Limbaugh’s does.

The speech really wasn’t that angry.
But I’m fine with a little anger anyway, because I’m angry.

Democrats need a villain and this time its Rush. Screw them. They will take everything he said and twist it to mean something else.

RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)
………the process continues…

“Best political team on television” Ok, infobabe, if you say so. I found Rush’s speach uplifting. But then again I’m just bitter and clingy.

The speech was good … It’s that CNN outfit that is rotten to the core — PRAVDA 2009.

this is what we are up against, for 8 years democrats spun theories of a stolen presidency and attempted to undermine they electoral legitimacy of President Bush, now fierce opposition classified as sinister, racist, or corrupt. Remember this and act accordingly. We need to stick together and defeat the unrelenting assault that is being launched by the left and the media.
rob verdi on March 1, 2009 at 12:38 PM
Limbaugh must have really hit a nerve with the left. Where were all of these phonies when the left was trashing Bush for 8 years?

What makes me more angry than Rush’s speech is our host posting without listening to the speech. Kinda like voting on bills not read.
Wade on March 1, 2009 at 12:40 PM
I caught the last part of it late last night on C-SPAN. Amongst all the rhetoric there was a coherent philosophy in there. A philosophy that I agree with, that government is a tool we use,, but our lives are up to ourselves; it’s not for government to guarantee equality of outcome but rather that we are responsible for our lives.
Democrats do want us to be dependent on the government, thus they view Rush & that philosophy as anathema and have to smear the messenger.
I’m no a Republican but the part of Rush’s speech I caught I liked.

The country is breaking apart anyway.

TheBigOldDog on March 1, 2009 at 12:41 PM
It wasn’t angry at all. It was full of energy and enthusiam.
It was frightening to Liberals though. Especially establishment Liberals. It was also frightening to fence sitters in the Conservative movement.
It was, basically, truth.
Untainted by a need to be politically correct.
Untainted by today’s ridiculous social mores that forbid honest discourse.
Untainted by any fear of honesty.
It was not a speech to please sophists and critics. It was PURE. RED. MEAT.
And it was full of optimism and belief in the goodness of man–while not ignoring that people who use their free will to tear down, to snicker, to pander, to condemn, to vacillate, and to fence sit.
Liberals and “Moderates” were accurately described. They don’t like that too much. So, of course, they use sarcasm and pontification to tear the speech down.
Montana on March 1, 2009 at 12:41 PM
And that is a problem how? Fewer independents dislike Rush now than did in 2003. Sounds like progress to me.
doriangrey on March 1, 2009 at 12:41 PM
If MSM outlets like CNN want to see anger, just wait another month or so when B.O. starts raising taxes. Then then can really see some very pissed-offisms that will really rattle their cages.
pilamaye on March 1, 2009 at 12:41 PM
Meh. Rush is a big boy, I think he can handle it.
All President Emanuel is doing is showing how little (literally and figuratively) he is. Real, large political leaders ignore their opposition, or at least feign attempts to reach out and be nice to it while quietly sticking in the shiv. These Chicago thugs are coming out with the meat axes and tommy guns. Very unbecoming, and indicative of a serious lack of confidence in themselves.
Nobody likes a sore winner, Rahm.
rockmom on March 1, 2009 at 12:42 PM
There was very little anger in the speech, but the Obama strategy is to personalize and marginalize opposition. Rush is the face they’ve chosen to demonize and the mainstream press is all too happy play along.
CNN is just reading the script prepared for them by the Obama team — the other broadcast networks and big city newspapers will be getting their copies and reading the same script in the coming days.

This is where the “rugged Individualism” that Reagon and Rush both speak of….becomes a weak point.
The various Tea parties show it also…..the Right cannot bring together a demonstration like the “angry socialists”…for various reasons…
the left is able to singularly pick the Rush’s, the Palins, the Romneys off one by one……..
In order to survive, do the majority of the Conservatives have to “give up” on rugged individualism……and join up on a group cause……better done early than late.

Another pronouncement from the Ministry of Truth.
Blackacre on March 1, 2009 at 12:42 PM
From what I read of Rahm, even though he may disagree with Rush, he is at least sane enough to say that Rush is calling it as he sees it, which demands at least a modicum of respect. But they have no respect for the sniveling GOP politicians who don’t have the balls to take a stand. Look, conservatives are always going to be diametrically opposed to liberalism, so why waste your time tapdancing around? Quit trying to play nice and call a spade a spade.

JiangxiDad on March 1, 2009 at 12:42 PM
“Ok, now to our liberal commentator who’s just had his hat handed to him by a man 10 times as eloquent. What did you think about the speech?”
Then he goes straight into painting the party of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Lynn Swann, and Michael Steele and Bobby Jindal as white. Or that the Republicans took over the House in 1994 purely with the support of white men.
What a joke. The thing is, Rush made sense. I hope Obama fails, because Obama’s failure means America succeeds. Many other nations have proven that about Obama’s actions so far.
PastorJon on March 1, 2009 at 12:42 PM
But I thought Boss Obama told people not to listen to Rush? Why does the left seem to hang on his every word?
Somewhere Bill Press agonizes, wishing he were as relevant as Rush.

Guardian on March 1, 2009 at 12:43 PM
Just watched all 10 parts from your post AP, and it was far from angry or hate filled. These people just take sound bites, twist them to justified their own bigotry and hatred for the free market and capitalism then present it to the “people” as examples of how “Republicans” are evil. Problem here is Rush’s message is having an energizing effect on the base, and when Obama’s overreaching hits the tipping point – which will happen sooner rather than later – those same lauded “Independents” will begin to see that Rush was right, not hateful, but like a modern day Paul Revere, riding the airwaves warning us of the impending disaster that is Obama policies.
smfoushee on March 1, 2009 at 12:43 PM
We are going to get anywhere trying to keep the libs in the MSM happy. McCain tried that for years and we all know how that worked out. Everybody knows damn well what Rush means by that and those that claim not to are never coming to our side anyway.
AP – You guys seems to really be stressing the negatives here lately, you were down on the tea parties, now all of this negativity about CPAC even though most said it was the most successful one yet. This site is getting old fast.
echosyst on March 1, 2009 at 12:43 PM
I don’t get it. He WAS making a keynote address at CPAC. Honest. He did. It’s a true picture.
As such the party (in so much as CPAC is “the party”) DOES think Limbaugh is one of its leaders. If there is any “strategy” behind tying Rush to the Republicans, then it’s the organizers of CPAC who are implementing it.

As preaching to the choir, it was fine.
But as the voice that’s going to appeal to enough people to get them to take a look at conservatism and conservative ideals, he–sorry, but–needs to sit down and shut up.
He starts by retelling an old joke and casting God as wanting to be him?
Sit down, Rush. Shut up.

Bill Schneider has either been living under a rock, being selectively forgetful, or lying through his teeth when he states that liberals haven’t hoped for George W. Bush to fail. I see that patriotic dissent, in their mind, has suddenly become mean-spirited when the liberals get into power.
threeCents on March 1, 2009 at 12:44 PM
CNN is just upset because he kept mentioning Fox…completely ignoring CNN…and stating that this is the first “national speech” was emphasizing the point that Fox is the only station listened to by a cross section.

Well, we can cut NASA’s budget. Bill Schneider already lives on another planet. Rush’s speech was “angry” and “sinister”? What was Bill’s reaction to Algore’s prayin’ and swayin’ speech, bellowing, “HE LIED!!”?
I suppose when your accepted methods of dissent are papier mache, puppetry and interpretive dance, actual y’know, logic, might seem combative. I bet if you showed Obama to be dishonest using his own words from public campaign funding to the laundry list of Obama’s shortcomings in truthfulness, Bill would call you “violent”.

It is obvious that Obama’s gentle nature is being swayed by Rahm’s confrontational attitude, and Rahm is winning.

This is not about Rush’s approval numbers, it’s about Obama’s:
Per RAS he’s now at 58%, his lowest since 1/20/09.
And:
“Since release of the President’s budget, the number of Republicans who Strongly Disapprove has grown to 57%. That’s up fourteen percentage points since Thursday morning.”

Pilamaye,
That is just the point. The media is not going to show the anger of the American people when the tax raises start to appear. All their polls, all their stories are going to show how everyone loves everything that Obama does and there are no problems, no problems at all.
And this will be the dems undoing. Because without accurate data, they will be hamstrung by their own tools.
StubbleSpark on March 1, 2009 at 12:51 PM
I watched the whole thing on FOX yesterday and thought it was pretty good to tell you the truth. In fact I wouldn’t characterize it as angry or sinister but rather well thought out, passionate, and unflinching. It was even quite humorous in places in that self depreciating way that Rush uses on his Radio show. Now if we could only fire up the GOP with same sort of passion for the principles of conservatism that Rush displayed and articulated in that speech then the Conservative movement will roar back into life.

The speech angered democrats?
Wait, wait…a conservative icon gives a speech that rallies conservatives and gets them dedicated to retrieving power in the coming years…and the democrats are angry about that?
That’s not an angry, sinister speech. That’s an effective speech. When Howard Dean was getting Democrats riled up in 2004, it was the exact same kind of rallying cry. Way to report the f***ing obvious, Schneider. Next you’ll tell us that Ann Coulter had some in the audience laughing at brusque humor, and that Tucker Carlson wore a bow tie, you schmuck.

I want Obama to fail too. It’s the only way our economy can recover. Rush is correct about people getting off their asses and bettering themselves rather that attempting to get “their fair share” of what others have earned through hard work and education. No one is entitled to a “fair share” of another’s property.

According to the American Heritage dictionary online—
Sinister:
Suggesting or threatening evil: a sinister smile.
Presaging trouble; ominous: sinister storm clouds.
Attended by or causing disaster or inauspicious circumstances.
On the left side; left.
Angry:
Feeling or showing anger; incensed or enraged: angry at a rude neighbor; angry with a salesclerk.
Indicative of or resulting from anger: an angry silence.
Having a menacing aspect; threatening: angry clouds on the horizon.
IF THE DEMS ARE SCARED OF RUSH-IM DOING THE HAPPY DANCE.

Your well-known snide posts establish a pattern. A pattern is actionable. You created your HotAir persona. I am not sure why you whine about that now.
Some of the news you put up here is very interesting and I thank you for those efforts, but your commentary too often reveals envy and immaturity. And you too often detract from the real and important issues of the story.
As you advised above (don’t read your posts) I try not to click on your articles and I have started viewing other websites more often. Private enterprise! You are of course entitled to do as you please. No argument there, in fact, GO FOR IT! And an honest bravo for it.
I thought Michelle Malkin owned HotAir and was surprised when you threatened to ban someone based on your ownership of HotAir. Then everything made sense. I thought HotAir was a more visual version of MichelleMalki.com. It’s not. It’s yours. Fair enough.
But maybe take your own advice, don’t read the comments which weary you so. Or even better, stop making yourself the story.

Since when does fee political speech “cross the line” and when did we elect pundits on CNN to alert us when said speech does?
Also, what part of that was angry and seditious? Obviously, something was universally offensive and, therefore, there must be some written caveat to our Bill of Rights I missed. So, what part of his normal, reasonable conservative speech was just out of bounds?

Keep fiddling CNN, before too long you won’t have any advertizers because your Messiah despises consumption.

Go Rush! This is the kind of crap that will energize the Conservatives.
Perpahs the LIBS/SOCIALIST SCABS didn’t anticipate the push back over the last few months.
This is going to be a fight like this country has never seen.
Rush loves it! I love it! and well… frankly that’s all that matters.. ;)

Allahpundit is okay. He’s not a vehement believer is all. What’s so wrong about not being fanatical about politics?

I’m talking more about interacting with commentators specifically about the topic, rather than defending his position. One of the dynamics I so appreciated about Captains Quarters, was that Ed injected himself onto threads and engaged in the topic. Made things very interesting and more personal, as we all got to know much about the heart of the man as well as his interests.

If CNN is panning it then it must be gold.
Rush is the reason I am a conservative. I think the reason he infuriates his critics so much is that a) he’s right and b) he doesn’t bow down and kiss their elite rear ends. If he needs to give a 1,000 speeches like this to get his points across then I say bring it on.
