Video: Coulter at CPAC

posted at 2:02 pm on February 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

I tuned in halfway through, caught a bunch of well-delivered one-liners, and stuck around to the end of the Q&A to hear her tell Obama he’s kidding himself if he thinks we can win in Afghanistan. Evidently we’re the anti-war party now. Or the party that opposes The One just for the sake of opposing him.

Actually, many of the military blogs I read have been saying that we don’t have much chance to turn Afghanistan into anything close to Iraq. And they have been saying this for a while now.

What most people who oppose Iraq and support Afghanistan never understood about Iraq is that is was strategic for many reasons. It was strategic to rip the head off the most powerful nation in the heart of the Middle East, cut off the funding Saddam was giving to terrorists, and also get a USA-friendly ally in the heart of the Middle East right next to Iran to keep it in check. The US military has had the same problems in Afghanistan as any other good military has in the past. Afghanistan is never going to be another Iraq. There are simply too many logistical problems and mountains to hide in and the population spread out all over and the poppy issue and the Pakistan issue, etc etc etc. The Left thought Iraq was “too long”, it could take probably decades to try to fix the Afghanistan-Pakistan problem.

That’s why Bush rightly went to Iraq, for the many strategic benefits that have come to fruition over the last 6 years.

Yep, March 13th falls on a Friday this year. Which means the anti-war marches could be made into a 3-day weekend anti-war, anti-military, anti-America, (anti-Obama?) orgyfest.

It’s going to be hilarious to watch this year even more. Because either there will be no marches and you will have all the leaders bending over backwards explaining why they are not protesting our occupation with B.O. continuing the Bush plan… or there will be marches against B.O. and it will be hilarious to see how the mass media tries to spin the protests by the Left against the messiah.

Does anyone believe that Da Bama can win any war? Due in large part to his caving in to the demands of the terrorists I certainly do not. Neither do I believe that he will get his namesake.

Where are Da Bama’s efforts to get other nations involved? Where is his commentary forcing the U.N. to get busy? Heck, Da Bama cannot even address racism via the U.N..

Maybe some here believe that cutting the military budget is proof that we really are fighting to win. I do not!

You need to control the areas that are logistically sound and move them out to the areas that aren’t. Then you can work with the people more. I think fighting in these areas beside a few strategic areas is a waste of time. Let them have this and build a new country…they will lose power over time and you dont’ have to do it yourself.

Entelechy on February 28, 2009 at 2:26 PM

Anne, as usual, is right.

Afghanistan cannot be “won” in the sense that we won in Iraq. The country is too primitive and uninterested in joining the modern world.

We already won by crushing the Taliban.

Moving forward, we should only maintain the ability to go in periodically to insure that evil does not reappear in force. We should also protect Karzi, but only to the extent he remains anti-terrorist and anti-Taliban (which is becoming more and more questionable).

More than that is an unnecessary cost of lives.

Somehow my video didn’t play the part about Afghanistan, so I can’t tell what she actually said.

I’m guessing that what she meant is that we should hold the liberals to the same standard of “victory” in Afghanistan that they invented and held Bush to in Iraq. Liberals own the war in Afghanistan now, and since they spent the last 6 years whining that it is the “real” war on terror, that means they SHOULD have an intention to “win” it. And we should hold them to it, and declare them failures if it isn’t “won” in the next year or so.

Michael in MI on February 28, 2009 at 2:10 PM

I saw this at Blackfive the other week (Feb. 18):

Obama’s War?

But let’s get back to Afghanistan. First I will repeat my admonition to Obama to make sure he is not simply trying to cover his political ass and campaign promises by sending more troops to that hell hole without the commitment to work toward victory. What victory means is something we can discuss, but it is more than simply adding a couple of combat brigades to be pulled back when pressure from his left wing spins up. Afghanistan is the longest of long wars and if the effort is not going to reflect this, then don’t make it. Use the troops you are sending to squash the bad guys where they have weaseled into, and then let’s bomb their bases flat and trust that time-honored dictum “Rubble doesn’t make trouble”.

I have been in a journalism fellowship for the past days for military reporters and we have met with a number of experts on A-stan and questioned them intensively. The overall consensus I see is that there is no history of, and little likelihood of building, a modern nation state there. Additionally without some answer to the free reign and safe havens in the tribal areas of Pakistan, it will be extremely difficult to create security. This requires a strategy that is not too ambitious but more importantly that is not simply political cover attempting to prove that Obama is not the “cut & runner” all his calls on Iraq would suggest. Any legitimate effort would certainly require an effort comprising all of his four years in office, and likely beyond. That will take a will to face up to calls of “quagmire” and “bring the troops home”. I hope President Obama can learn from the fact that he was dead wrong on Iraq, and will listen to Gen. Petraeus and the folks who gave us the winning strategy there as he and his team look for answers in Afghanistan.

Evidently we’re the anti-war party now. Or the party that opposes The One just for the sake of opposing him.

Which is becoming more and more evident by the comments on HA. (Yeah, yeah, bring on the RINO, Liberal, etc labels. Of which I am none BTW). It just seems evident that no matter what Bambam says or does, NO ONE here is going to think it is an idea even worth contemplating. Not that it matters that McCain would have been, or is, any different. Hell, Bush is the one who started handing out YOUR money in the first place!!! Once ‘the people’ realize that no one in government gives a rat’s a** about anyone but themselves, the better off sleep will come. People have survived worse than Bambam (Hitler, Stalin, the Depression, etc). This too shall pass. Adversity builds character. I guess it depends on the kind of ‘character’ you want to be…

RWLA on February 28, 2009 at 2:39 PM

It was entertaining, but I agree that some substance wouldn’t hurt. Then again, maybe that’s what Rush will deliver later today.

But there’s nothing wrong with “bomb throwing” as one poster put it. The left did that for 8 years and is still doing it despite the fact that they’re running the show now. If we’re going to make the American public see the light and understand what we’re all up against here, a little bit of biting sarcasm helps.

epluribusunum on February 28, 2009 at 2:46 PM

Ah, the Afganistan issue:

Here’s my take of her comment: She is saying we are moving the front of the war on terror to a place that is much more difficult for us logistically to fight in/at.

She has a good point about how AQ picked Iraq as the forefront of the war and we have built up a real success there, so it’s a good place to fight. She’s saying O is abandoning that strategy for political reasons exclusively.

Spirit of 1776 on February 28, 2009 at 2:46 PM

I don’t think there’s any question that we can win in Afghanistan, and should do so. The real question is if the Precedent’s idea of war will allow us to win – which I do not believe it will. And he will do nothing against Pakistan, beyond the same sorts of attacks that Bush was already carrying out but which don’t change the situation in any demonstrable way.

As to the larger war, there were 3 heads to the enemies from the arab/persian/muslim world (though there are many independent enemies, there, all concentrated on killing the West – and each other afterwards). Those heads represented the Sunni, Shiite, and secular forces. Iran led the Shiite, Saudia Arabia led the Sunnis and Iraq led the seculars. Each of these three provided most of the political muscle, financial backing, expertise, and logistics to their various arms in the arab/persian/muslim world – and all of this was possible only through oil (which is why I have constantly maintained that this problem with the barbarians will only end when we have retaken the gulf oil fields and defanged the arab/persian/muslim enemies).

Bush took out the head of the secular problem, but lost his nerve in addressing the other two. The new Precedent, unfortunately, is looking to ally with the enemies that are left – because that is who he is. What he does in Afghanistan, in light of this, is, sadly, almost inconsequential, especially as Iraq is going to implode as American pressure is taken off and sectarian forces (with help from outside – Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran) tear that country to shreds.

I’m not a big fan of Coulter’s either, but saying she is what’s wrong with the GOP is, IMO, ridiculous. Having an abrasive pundit or two (or three) in the party doesn’t damage it. If that were the case, how in the hell did Democrats sweep into office (and Congress) with Code Pink, MoveOn.org, Daily Kos, etc. riding shotgun? What’s wrong with the GOP is that they had their opportunity to govern as conservatives the past 8 years and flushed it down the toilet.

No shiite. National health care or any other boondoggle/disaster that the libs want to foist on America won’t stand or fall because of a Coulter one-liner.

Gaia, look what the libs said about the Republican Congress members after they voted against the stimulus; we can’t so much as politely question a demorat plan without being painted as out of touch hicks who hate the poor.

Bishop on February 28, 2009 at 2:56 PM

Ah, yes, I’m a big ol’ socialist for not wanting Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh ruining people’s perception of conservatives and conservatism.

we just had a taste of your ‘conservatism’ good old ‘bend-over’ Juan McCain…and arlen ‘grab the ankles’ specter…its worked SOOOOOO well hasn’t it??

your ‘conservatism’ is democrat-lite…thanks, but no thanks…

absolutely right, you have to fight fire with fire!! and Ann has the guts that our elected leaders are SO lacking…could you imagine how much better this country would be if she was president for the last 8 years??

right4life on February 28, 2009 at 2:58 PM

Watched a few minutes. I had to turn it off. Wow, is she abrasive.

terryannonline on February 28, 2009 at 2:15 PM

Shall we call a wahhhmbulance? Get over it. She is who she is, and people who don’t like her should just realize it and try to listen to the point shes trying to make.

Speaking of John McCain…

didn’t Obama use a Limbaugh comment in an ad against him during the campaign?

My point exactly!

terryannonline on February 28, 2009 at 3:00 PM

Wow, that’s seems like more than a bit of a stretch. But good to know who we will have to blame for anything the Dems, with the control of Congress and the presidency, get through.

Cindy Munford on February 28, 2009 at 2:53 PM

My point is Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh make great targets when the Dems are trying to radicalize the Republicans.

terryannonline on February 28, 2009 at 3:02 PM

didn’t Obama use a Limbaugh comment in an ad against him during the campaign?

By completely taking it out of context. Completely! Even the press called him out on that.

The only way that stops is if the left stops lying.

Negative. McCain, Spector, Snowe, Collins, et al are everything that is wrong with the GOP.

Well put. My sentiments exactly. if it wasn’t for Ed Morrisey, I wouldn’t keep coming here…

Go Ann!

ArgoNunya on February 28, 2009 at 3:03 PM

I can’t watch her too but nothing wrong with intellectual honest opposition for checks and balance.

getalife on February 28, 2009 at 3:03 PM

Ah, yes, I’m a big ol’ socialist for not wanting Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh ruining people’s perception of conservatives and conservatism.

If they ruin people’s perception of conservatism, as I said above, how did the Democrats gain power on the backs of hideous organizations like MoveOn and Code Pink? You may not like Coulter and Limbaugh, but you’re antipathy is clouding your judgment.

Erich66 on February 28, 2009 at 3:03 PM

If Ann Coulter didn’t exist, we would have to invent her. Nobody gets under the liberals’ skin like she does.

rockmom on February 28, 2009 at 3:04 PM

Ann Coulter is spectacular and speaks for most conservative republicans. We need more like Coulter and Limbaugh who are both conservative republicans with backbones.

God, life, fiscal responsibility, self-reliance and traditional families are the issues that Coulter and Limbaugh fight for.

RINOS have destroyed the Republican Party.

Erich66 on February 28, 2009 at 3:03 PM

I don’t like MoveOn.org or Code Pink either. And in fact MoveOn.org actually gave Republicans some ammo with the hideous Patraeus ad of theirs. All I’m asking for conservatives not to give Dems ammo. Ann Coulter is ammo.

terryannonline on February 28, 2009 at 3:05 PM

Ok, get back to me in a few months after the Dems have passed universal health care because the GOP was trying to getting some inertia but then the Dems bashed with some stupid Ann Coulter comment.

terryannonline on February 28, 2009 at 2:48 PM

What color is the sky in your world? And what part of the conservative ideology is Rush ruining for us? We’ve tried playing patty-cake with the Dem’s; It’s never worked and it never will.

Also- It would appear that Allahpundit has a problem with strong women who don’t mince words to get their point acoss!

anniekc on February 28, 2009 at 3:06 PM

Ann was terrific, and we should have more people speaking out and calling a spade a spade. Why do some of you rinos think we should make nice with the libtards? Remeber how nasty they were during the campaign? Did you rant at them and send them emails saying be nice. If you are so enamored with the left, then you probably don’t want to hear what real conservatives have to say, and don’t blame Ann, blame the rinos like yourelves who caused all this crap. You probably voted for the filthy lying racist commie predendent.

terryannonline on February 28, 2009 at 2:54 PM

Right. The libs and their media whores refer to conservatives as flyover rubes, southern racists and gun-toting retards. Our minority pols are called Uncle Tom, house negro and Oreo. Our women are baby-making retards who can barely understand daytime soaps and our men like to kill things just to watch them suffer. Our kids are doomed to a life of unbending religiosity or barefoot stupidity.

The perception of conservatives is being shaped everyday by people who aren’t fit to lick the dog crap off my boots, yet we still manage to almost pull off an upset election in a year that belonged to the dems.

You need to have more faith in your fellow Americans that they can see through the facade the left has created about conservatives.

Bishop on February 28, 2009 at 3:06 PM

Ann Coulter is a necessary weapon in the arsenal.

No one needs to get all tingly over a hand grenade, but it’s great to have when you need it.

Greg Toombs on February 28, 2009 at 2:37 PM

You can argue how effective Coulter is, but you can’t argue about her entertainment value. Agree with or disagree with what she says, but she is fun.

I hate anyone who thinks they have a right to me and my families hard earned money while they lie around makin babies, buyin houses they can’t pay for, screamin for the goberment to get them off their roofs, and electin the Hopey, Changey, Chimpy, Communist who has no problem punishing achievers and rewarding the lazy just for the sake of his own and his parties power.
The damage this Commy has set about to do to this country via the stimulus expansion of entitlements and union payoffs deserves the ire of every true Republican else why not just go join the “Gimme Someone Elses Money Party”.

Gentleman find your balls and start fighting or be nice and be steamrolled for your gallant, misguided efforts. (I’m talking to the Republican Party here).

dhunter on February 28, 2009 at 3:07 PM

Were the questioners specially selected for incoherence and inability to get the point?

Ann abrasive? Look, first tell me – is she wrong? If she is right, and I believe she mostly is, then she should give ‘em hell. Have you noticed that none of our political opponents ever get criticzed in the media for abrasivenss no matter what they say about us, and they say awful things with great regularity?

drunyan8315 on February 28, 2009 at 3:07 PM

It’s insanity to claim a best-selling author hurts a movement intellectually without even having read the author! Like I said, utterly disappointing.

Spirit of 1776 on February 28, 2009 at 2:54 PM

Nothing disappointing. terryann is a nice naive young lady, who claims to be an aspiring conservative. Either she’ll realize what’s going on when she gets older, or she’ll go vote with her heart. Either way is just fine, so long as she doesn’t claim otherwise. Actually, she can even claim whatever she wishes, and vote whatever.

Also, terryann, as an aspiring reporter, you simply must read more before you make these ‘deep’ claims, without having done so. It’s friendly advice,

Entelechy on February 28, 2009 at 3:07 PM

Wow AP, do you really have as much loathing for Coulter as your article suggests or is it just more red meat to boost posts on the thread? Do you think maybe, just maybe she thinks we have no chance in Afghanistan because Obama is a leftist goober with no chance of running the war effectively? Nah, it must just be some opposition unrelated to rhyme or reason. That sounds like Ann Coulter. Get a clue. Does anyone on here think any war front will be won, or even handled well? Expect massive troop deaths. Think Black Hawk Down but on a worldwide scale. Maybe Ann has no confidence because leftists don’t have a very good record in that area. But no AP, it must be that she’s just a crazy polemicist looking for publicity. Are you really that out of touch?

chicagojedi on February 28, 2009 at 3:08 PM

I like Ann. She brings it to ‘em just like the donks aren’t afraid to say outrageous things.

She is right about Afghanistan. Russia and Peter the Great didn’t/couldn’t win there either. We can’t either unless like someone said earlier; nuke ‘em from high orbit.

cjs1943 on February 28, 2009 at 3:09 PM

All I’m asking for conservatives not to give Dems ammo. Ann Coulter is ammo.

To not give ammo is to not fight.

She and Rush are net gainers as they demonstrate the vapidity of the arguments of the left. They may turn one or two people off here or there, but they open minds.

Spirit of 1776 on February 28, 2009 at 3:09 PM

Go Anne! Loved it. She had some great lines in there. Caustic? Hell Yeah! It’s good to have a tough outspoken woman to “Lay it out there” once in a while.

The “roll over and crush Canadians” bit was funny too.

She loves playing with her locks, don’t she?

“Going on the View makes me feel so young and pretty”.

Neither are elected members of the Republican party and anyone can be a conservative. I support these two people with my pocketbook and will continue to do so as long as they say the things I believe. They are just part of a group that you apparently think should be very very exclusive. It’s funny because I didn’t think her talk added to the convention until you wanted to kick her out. STOP TRYING TO KICK PEOPLE OUT!! And I am saying that to fiscal and social conservatives.
