Video: Is Michelle Obama the coolest First Lady evah?

posted at 10:44 am on February 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

Deep thoughts from CNN’s “Showbiz Tonight,” keying off Mrs. O’s new fashionplate status. Which gives me the perfect excuse to link Byron York’s piece in today’s Examiner wondering what the White House social secretary’s doing attending Donna Karan shows while The One assures us the economy’s disintegrating.

I asked [a White House aide] whether the first lady considered Rogers’ hitting the fashion shows a little frivolous, given the seriousness of our times. “I think you’re assigning a value judgment to the fashion industry,” I was told. “She doesn’t think it is frivolous at all.”

I talked to two former White House social secretaries, one Democrat and one Republican. “I don’t really understand where fashion ties in with the social secretary’s job,” the Republican told me, “because the only fashion she needs to worry about is her own, and she has to make sure she does not eclipse the first lady…

As millions of Americans worry about losing their jobs, the first lady is celebrated on the cover of Wintour’s magazine, Vogue, where it is suggested that her “ardent championing of new names in American design” has caused some to call her the “new Jackie Kennedy.”

Why not Nancy Reagan? Mrs. Reagan’s husband also took office amid an inherited economic crisis, and she quickly became the subject of sometimes bitter criticism for her fondness for high fashion — for “exercising her opulent tastes in an economy that is inflicting hardship on so many,” in the words of a 1981 New York Times article.

Exit question: If First Lady Cindy McCain’s secretary was seen scouting out Vera Wang haute couture while Maverick announced a $3 trillion budget, that’d all be part of her “cool” too, no?

Fred Thompson’s wife was only a little younger than Michelle and somehow I don’t remember liberals gushing about her beauty. In fact, all they did was call her a gold digging ho.

They overplay their hand in everything. Very Orwellian.

RepubChica on February 27, 2009 at 12:04 PM

I’m guessing that this is because they’re bending over backwards to demonstrate how not-racist they are.

Unfortunately it’s backfiring because instead of treating Michelle Obama as an individual, who like all individuals has both good and bad characteristics, the media looks at her and only sees Black Person.

In other words, hideous as such attitudes are, it’s an instance of can’t tell ‘em apart, they’re all the same. All the white liberal guilt gets dumped onto the First Lady so fashion editors can demonstrate their own wonderfulness.

A truly not-racist approach would be to recognize that few individuals of any demographic description are genuinely gorgeous, and outside of Hollywood and fashion runways it doesn’t really matter anyway.

Worst of all, in the end the person it’s most unfair to is Michelle Obama. It’s hard enough to keep up appearances when you really are a supermodel, imagine the pressure on this ordinary middle-aged working mom who’s now been saddled with the burden of false beauty baggage.

Gilda on February 27, 2009 at 12:39 PM

Yeah, it is sad, nothing like fantasizing about raping your own children like you filth on the left.

Wow, you’re really in a tizzy. I suggest 5 deep breaths, 1 pledge of allegiance and a loud “Let’s Roll!”. You should be right as rain after that.

bw222 on February 27, 2009 at 12:47 PM

You know no one is declaring that Michelle has this stunning face, what they say is that she has a pretty damn stunning figure for a woman her age (she does) she has great skin (she does) and she tends to wear clothes that flatter her body (she does). And I’ll add that she’s NOT buying haute cotoure, her inauguration outfit was J. Crew as are a lot of the dresses she’s worn to official events. She knows how to rock a good pattern, which is very now. In the primary she was throwing down some great looks that play with volume, also very now.

stunning figure? cindy mccain looks way better than michelle (michelle’s got way too much junk in the trunk) but they basically called cindy a stepford wife. and her inauguration outfit wasn’t jcrew. she had that hideous suit, then the dress for the ball, which were both from some “latin” designers which the papers hailed at the time.

PimFortuynsGhost on February 27, 2009 at 1:01 PM

Good grief – this sounds like a crush

You know no one is declaring that Michelle has this stunning face, what they say is that she has a pretty damn stunning figure for a woman her age (she does) she has great skin (she does) and she tends to wear clothes that flatter her body (she does). She knows how to rock a good pattern, which is very now. In the primary she was throwing down some great looks that play with volume, also very now.

The woman is only 45 years old – she’s not exactly the only woman her age who is in shape – especially among women who have the time to devote to their looks.

Her skin – I guess so. But as for picking clothing that flatters her shape – not seeing that. The cotton ball ballgown? The black & red spider dress? The sleeveless dresses in the middle of winter? Maybe she’ll look better after her secretary gets back from the fashion shows and givers her a few pointers.

Meanwhile, back in the Oval Office: “OK, so now their too distracted to look below my rhetoric, so I can say there are no earmarks, when it’s all earmarks, and I can say I’m against the Fairness Doctrine while I sign the localism rules, I can say I’ll cut the deficit in half when I’m actually talking about bringing it down to twice what Bush gave me since I quadrupled it, etc, etc.”

Realistically, Donna Karan and Carolina Herrera would probably give her a whole wardrobe for free. It’d be great advertising for them.

Though I personally think she’s far too muscular for Herrera, and the other delicate, strapless or halter-top designs she’s been wearing lately. She could work the Katharine Hepburn, feminine-tweed thing, I think. Maybe.

cjs1943 on February 27, 2009 at 1:09 PM

Sorry, but “dignified” is most assuredly not an adjective that I, personally, would use to describe Michelle Obama.

Aware of the spotlight on her now? Absolutely. Aware that she has an opportunity to shatter all prior mores and images of First Ladies? Most definitely.

Attempting to establish her own identity as the first African American First Lady? I think this is closer to the truth than anything else. She’s not sure what she’s trying to establish image-wise, but one thing she’s definitely not wanting to do is fit into the ‘traditional’ model of a First Lady.

Although I’m not particularly impressed with Michelle, and even less impressed with her fashion conscious escapades, I give her credit for being her own person, which has been a huge challenge for most prior First Ladies. All except maybe Barbara Bush, who was just perfect in her grandmotherly nature.

So, I guess to not be hypocritical we should give a rat’s behind about the First Lady’s ‘style’, coiffure and accoutrement.

Naaah.

Exit question: If First Lady Cindy McCain’s secretary was seen scouting out Vera Wang haute couture while Maverick announced a $3 trillion budget, that’d all be part of her “cool” too, no?

Of course not, but that’s just part of the landscape; it’s understood. CNN is thinking that if they keep calling her ultra-cool, enough people will eventually become convinced that she’s Jackie O…just as they always want their Dem heroes to be JFK reincarnated. It’s really creepy after a while.

Everybody loves Michele! I think I first fell in love with her when she said that America was a mean country.

Michelle,
flowers,
hearts,
puppies,
and bunny rabbits!

And she woo’d me again when she said that when her husband was nominated for POTUS she was in the 1st time in her adult life proud of her country.

Michele,
candies,
runways,
chiffon,
and ice cream!

Wuv! Twoo wuv!

God bless Mrs. Obama for restoring honor and dignity to the White House.

benny shakar on February 27, 2009 at 3:15 PM

Surely, you mean after Bill Clinton took them away.

Honor and dignity?? God help me.
The woman looks like linebacker in a dress. And she moves like one too.
And when she couldn’t even get her big butt out of Chicago to accompany her husband to Ground Zero on 9/11 – it was clear to me she has another agenda.

IlonaE on February 27, 2009 at 6:09 PM

I understand that many of you are unclear on the concept.

By “honor and dignity” I mean not a single DUI, vehicular homicide, minor in possession of alcohol, or unwed teen mother in sight.

benny shakar on February 27, 2009 at 6:34 PM

She’s fug, and she has awful style. This love affair with all things Obama is completely and utterly revolting. I mean, she uglies up everything she wears – everything she wears ends up looking like a giant potato sack.

The Obama children are only 11 and 8. If the Left is correct and the Obamameister wins a second turn the girls have enough time to achieve all those goals.

No.

And we can’t leave out that really strange “dress everybody up to match” concept she does. Right down to making the PREZ-BO wear a color coordinated tie.
God help us – the country is on the edge of an economic abyss and First Mama is picking out ties and dresses for her kids and herself that all match.

Those designers better enjoy the sales at discount because when PREZ-BO gets done with pumping up taxes – Designer clothes sales will tank.

HOPE AND CHANGE…………

I knew Jackie O, and she’s no Jackie O.

HonestConservative on February 27, 2009 at 7:28 PM

Laura restored dignity and honor to the White House. She looked lovely in her clothes, she didn’t look like a notorious spider as many people thought Michelle did in that red and black dress. And she loved her country all of her life and was proud of it.

Bambi on February 27, 2009 at 7:32 PM

You know if anyone hasn’t figured it out yet, it’s stick it to you and goodies for me. THEY WON, THEY WON, THEY WON. I hope all those weirdos in hollywood when they loose their homes are still praising his name. When all the jews who voted for the idiot are happy about their taxes and the non support for Israel. When nanci and dirty harry and obama tax all of your savings and retirement, you’ll still be thinking he is the messiah.
Get a grip – where is all the money going to come from? 3.6 trillion – to the moon and back end to end 3 times and back to earth. Wow! Can we even imagine?

Bambi on February 27, 2009 at 7:38 PM

Body like Vince Wilfork, face like Karl Malone, hands like George Foreman, coif like some cheap tranny in Provincetown…she’s a liberal’s dream date.

How in the world is that network even theoretically relevant anymore? Seriously.

The entire lot of them are nothing but sycophants.

Theophile on February 27, 2009 at 9:30 PM

WOW .. talk about trying to make a silk purse out of a pigs ear..

Attractive .. NO

Classy … NO

Dignified … NO

Laura Bush brought a human touch to the White House that Micheele Obama will NEVER achieve..

The simple fact is that her anger at America has been replaced by a smugness.. knowing that fools in the MSM like these cackling geese will fawn over her as the media did for the last 2 years for Barak..

Both of them .. “all flash no cash”
