Video: Is Michelle Obama the coolest First Lady evah?

posted at 10:44 am on February 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

Deep thoughts from CNN’s “Showbiz Tonight,” keying off Mrs. O’s new fashionplate status. Which gives me the perfect excuse to link Byron York’s piece in today’s Examiner wondering what the White House social secretary’s doing attending Donna Karan shows while The One assures us the economy’s disintegrating.

I asked [a White House aide] whether the first lady considered Rogers’ hitting the fashion shows a little frivolous, given the seriousness of our times. “I think you’re assigning a value judgment to the fashion industry,” I was told. “She doesn’t think it is frivolous at all.”

I talked to two former White House social secretaries, one Democrat and one Republican. “I don’t really understand where fashion ties in with the social secretary’s job,” the Republican told me, “because the only fashion she needs to worry about is her own, and she has to make sure she does not eclipse the first lady…

As millions of Americans worry about losing their jobs, the first lady is celebrated on the cover of Wintour’s magazine, Vogue, where it is suggested that her “ardent championing of new names in American design” has caused some to call her the “new Jackie Kennedy.”

Why not Nancy Reagan? Mrs. Reagan’s husband also took office amid an inherited economic crisis, and she quickly became the subject of sometimes bitter criticism for her fondness for high fashion — for “exercising her opulent tastes in an economy that is inflicting hardship on so many,” in the words of a 1981 New York Times article.

Exit question: If First Lady Cindy McCain’s secretary was seen scouting out Vera Wang haute couture while Maverick announced a $3 trillion budget, that’d all be part of her “cool” too, no?

Wow, and to think that the stereotype of the GOP of the 21st century is that you’re all a bunch of angry, racist losers that live in trailers. Good job dispelling that one!

Actually, I sold the trailer for a kickin’ clapboard cabin, complete with rusted appliances littering the yard and a hog pen.

There is a two level outhouse, the bottom level is for the guests. Visit anytime.

No.

Lawrence on February 27, 2009 at 11:30 AM

I’d say she’s the most elite first lady we’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t expect her to go around in raggedy jeans and crocs, but she could be a little more sensitive to the state of our economy. If she wanted to be a class act she could still wear the haughty clothes, but do it in a factory discussing lost jobs, not gracing the cover of an elite magazine that most middle class Americans can’t even afford to buy, not to mention the products they advertise in it.

scalleywag on February 27, 2009 at 11:30 AM

Bigot! you must be a Republican.

neuquenguy on February 27, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Conservative, actually. Just happens that, on most issues, I side with the Republicans. =)

Course, even after the Feds beat the crap out of the Cardies, they still took the initiative to help them rebuild. Remarkable how that’s a theme, even in a series about the 24th (and a half!) century.

Given that the slobberers in the MSM get all leg-tingly for anything Obambi, you’d expect them to rave about Michelle. She’s a classeless, bitter crone, and it’s got nothing to do with the way she dresses, although she doesn’t seem to me to have much taste in clothes, either.

Spending too much money on rags and accouterments is what’s so not fashionable and tacky in this picture. One word for Michelle and her personal shopper: Ebay.

RepubChica on February 27, 2009 at 11:36 AM

Michelle Obama is ..well… not very pretty. As far as “cool” well, I think old Barbara Bush was much cooler. I don’t consider out-spoken elitest Harvard educated lawyers as cool no matter who they are.

The truth is that you don’t listen to your political opponents. Instead you prefer to like to think of Palin as trailer trash for the simple reason that her political views differ from your own. If she were a democrat soccer mom, you’d love her.

And what do you have against people living in trailers? I thought liberals were concerned about the little guy. Truth is their not. Your all elitists.

Anger is never justified? I’m sure you never got angry when Booosh spoke on TV. Yeah, never.

Please demonstrate a racist comment that was spoken on this thread. You can’t but that doesn’t matter. It’s way easier to throw accusations and confirm in your mind what you already believe.

As far as dispelling the myth? It’s impossible to convince someone who doesn’t want to be convinced otherwise.

I think there could be a positive ripple effect on the economy if the WH Social Secretary is hitting the fashion circuit, and clearly Mrs. Obama is smart enough to realize this as well.

TruUSA on February 27, 2009 at 11:40 AM

Speaking of spending, how much did the Decider’s silly little Iraq adventure cost? Find any WMD’s? Anyone seen bin Laden? Didn’t think so.
capitulus on February 27, 2009 at 11:03 AM

WTH does that have to do with the price of tea in China? You are expecting me to say Bush was perfect in everything he did? I am not a hopeless partisan and I am not going to try to defend him. However, I will respond to your empty accusations as best as I can. Unlike you I will back up my rhetoric with actual facts and figures.
1. The Iraq war has so far cost $600,512,916,012. The figure comes from a partisan website, but the website is anti-war so they will tend to balloon the figure to support their view. You will notice that it is about 1/2 of what the recent stimulus bill cost. You can certainly blame Bush for the cost of the war, but you cannot blame him for the cost of the stimulus package. That was created by a Democratic run congress with no Republican input.
2. You are right that no WMD were found. I assume you are claiming that Bush lied to the people to gain oil for his corporate buddies or some such nonsense. How could the US have EVER thought that Saddam was in possession of them? Perhaps by looking at history? Since we didn’t find any should the US just pack-up and tell the Iraqi people “Our bad, see ya”. We made the best out of a terrible situation. Hindsight is always 20/20 so blaming Bush for bad intelligence is kind of like blaming your stock broker for losing your money in the stock market. The information we had at the time led us to believe he had them. Do I think we should have invaded him to force him to give them up? Nope, but since I am not the commander the only thing I can do is vote someone else in and complain about it. Which I most assuredly did.
3. the “Where is Osama” argument I am not sure what you are going for. Bush knew, just like Obama knows, generally where Osama is. We can’t go and take him out because he is in Pakistan. Are you suggesting we invade a nuclear armed country whose population is not on great terms with the US and whose central government is not in firm control of the military?
Please respond when you have actual facts to back up your claims, otherwise go away. Sheesh, I feel like I am trying to field questions from naive high school students.

I’m not really into fashion – they don’t make fashionable clothes for fatties like me – but I do have an interest in how public figures present themselves to the world. And Mrs. Obama has a bit to learn about presentation. Also, just because it’s made be a famous designer, does not mean that it’s flattering (both Inaugaration outfits).

It is not the place of the First Lady to be “cool.” I think she’d be much more influential and likable if she dressed less expensively (but not cheaply), and spent some time in a soup kitchen. But that’s totally my opinion of her (and I’m really trying to be nice).

capitulus on February 27, 2009 at 11:57 AM

Is this going to happen every few decades when a young-ish liberal gets elected POTUS and his young-ish wife isn’t wearing grandma clothes yet?

Is she ‘trendier’ than a lot of the other first ladies? Yes – in as much as trends are usually ‘what the young folks are wearing’. I’m sure we can all agree that it’s a good thing when first ladies in their 70′s don’t wear sleeveless dresses and leg-baring skirts. Does this mean that they don’t have a clue about fashion or does it mean that they dress age appropriately?

JadeNYU on February 27, 2009 at 11:57 AM

According to this, she is just high profile shill for these fashion houses. But she forgot to pay the taxes on the freebies.

A capitulus, another insecure young hipster who makes minimum wage because no one is intelligent enough to realize how brilliant he is.

Too bad they don’t pay for being a psuedo-intellectual? Let me guess…still in college?

Does this mean that they don’t have a clue about fashion or does it mean that they dress age appropriately?

JadeNYU on February 27, 2009 at 11:57 AM

There is enough variation in the new cuts and materials that I think it’s entirely possible to dress “age appropriate” without wearing a waistband at the armpits and SAS shoes.

Are big butts back “in” now? I must’ve missed that…

Wyznowski on February 27, 2009 at 12:09 PM

But I honestly can’t blame people for overreacting to the blatantly false narrative the media’s pushing re Michelle Obama’s physical attractiveness and fashion style.

You know no one is declaring that Michelle has this stunning face, what they say is that she has a pretty damn stunning figure for a woman her age (she does) she has great skin (she does) and she tends to wear clothes that flatter her body (she does). And I’ll add that she’s NOT buying haute cotoure, her inauguration outfit was J. Crew as are a lot of the dresses she’s worn to official events. She knows how to rock a good pattern, which is very now. In the primary she was throwing down some great looks that play with volume, also very now.

But frankly, it’s all fun and games isn’t it? Why does this kind of thing have a political agenda. If you think fashion is fun and you want to gush/hate on Obama’s fashion I don’t see a huge problem with it. But the outrage over it is kind of silly.

DeathToMediaHacks on February 27, 2009 at 12:10 PM

Okay…even if we give her “cool” status, remind me again why the hell that even matters?

What is this? The Junior High?

If the only humanitarian work she ever does is helping her own children, who cares how “cool” she ranks in comparison to the more noble First Ladies who have gone before her.

IMHO (which isn’t worth much, I know, I know…), she’s just self-important…sort of like her husband (and later on, her children…who one day we’ll have to deal with in the fawning media and tabloids too…like the Kennedy kids).

bluelightbrigade on February 27, 2009 at 12:10 PM

She is rich so why steal from that charity? Where is the link proving such a thing?

becki51758 on February 27, 2009 at 11:54 AM

While it is true, he worded it in such a way to leave the impression that she had stolen money from a charity (akin to Air America and the Boys & Girls Club of NY) which is not the case.

Cindy McCain, like many other people, developed an addiction to prescription pain killers after being on them legitimately for a knee surgery. Through one of her own charities (which would not have existed at all had it not been for her money), she had access to pain killers (it was a medical charity) and she stole the pain killers from the charity. It’s certainly not a good thing, though, it’s a common thing (many doctors with pain killer addictions do the same thing because they are around the drugs and have access and they aren’t strong-willed enough to resist). This is definitely not to say that it’s o.k. for her to steal the pills, but, the implication that the charity was somehow worse off from her being a part of it when it wouldn’t have existed at all without her is stupid. Pill-stealing and all, the world had a net gain from her charitable work which is something that our troll friend would rather ignore.

You probably haven’t heard about it because it was something that happened a long time ago and was a ‘breaking’ story in 1994 when Cindy did a series of interviews about what happened. That’s why most legitimate news agencies didn’t feel it was worth more than a passing mention 14 years later when her husband was the GOP nominee for president.

ScaryBiscuits on February 27, 2009 at 12:08 PM

True (not about the shallow part!). I’m not claiming Barbara Bush should have been a fashion icon. Still, even had she worn trendy old-lady clothes, she still wouldn’t have been a trendy person. She could perhaps have pulled off stylish, but only in that, “Hey! Grandma’s not wearing a shirt with her little dog’s picture on it. That’s pretty stylish…” kind of way.

I think that beyond a certain age, unless you were considered a ‘style icon’ when you were younger, no one will ever consider you a style icon. Even with Jackie O, people continued to talk about how fashionable she was as she got older, but, most of what they referred to were things she did when she was younger and then they’d throw in a pic or two of an older Jackie O that was always reminiscent of something they considered fashionable in a younger JO.

I took 4 years of Latin in high school and hardly count that as some kind of great accomplishment.capitulus on February 27, 2009 at 11:38 AM

I do believe you that you do not think Latin is a worthy achievement. How could we possibly believe that the works of Cicero are of any use to us today? Cicero was a common man who rose to become Consul and oppose the tyrant Julius Caesar. Whose treatises on friendship and government are still being used today. How could we even think the writing of Erasmus are worth looking at? He only wrote about abuses of power in the institutions of his time, and became one of the primary sources of change for The Enlightenment. And we should completely ignore Thomas Aquinas. He was merely a philosopher who championed truth through reason. These men are certainly not worth knowing since they wrote in Latin.

txaggie on February 27, 2009 at 12:18 PM

Why would anyone be suprised that the same media who think Obama walks on water decide that his wife is “cool?” IMO this is just a misguided effort to overcome the impression many people have of her – that she’s shrewish.

Normally I don’t care what a First Lady wears as long as she’s not tarting it up or embarrassing the nation. However IMO her style leaves a lot to be desired and those who think she’s “cool” are just trying to pretend she has more taste than it appears she does.

I can understand that it may be difficult for a woman of her height and size to appear stylish but it might be better if they didn’t try so hard.

Your ‘conservative’ superiority fantasy is quite sad. It’s nice to see that you found a forum where you can sound ‘important’. It can’t be fun logging off and going back to being a zero.

And for the record, I had a scholarship to undergrad and paid off business school 10 years ago.

Also, there’s no shame in working in working at McDonalds or Taco Bell etc. But saying so makes you feel like a real ‘classic’ ‘con’, right?

capitulus on February 27, 2009 at 12:28 PM

I agree with the posters who say that Barbara Bush was the coolest first lady. There is nothing about Michelle that’s attractive, but that’s not the important thing. It’s the inner beauty that seems to be lacking. But cool doesn’t relate to beauty either. So I would say they are two different things. To the young, maybe Michelle is cool.

You don’t understand how it works. Liberals can do that (and what they did to Palin) because they have proven that they are compassionate; free of all prejudice; and fair. Conservatives, on the other hand, are known for their hatred, bigotry and ignorance. You need to consider these facts when judging what is said. It’s not a double standard, it’s just a question of moral authority.

Yeah, it is sad, nothing like fantasizing about raping your own children like you filth on the left. Say hi to Bernie for me in your next correspondence. Crazy thing about my fantasy is that tax receipts prove it to be actual reality.

It is cute how you on the left equate education with spending years at a leftist indoctrination center. Also, considering your love affair with taxes it would appear you did not learn much at “business school”.
