Video: Is Michelle Obama the coolest First Lady evah?

posted at 10:44 am on February 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

Deep thoughts from CNN’s “Showbiz Tonight,” keying off Mrs. O’s new fashionplate status. Which gives me the perfect excuse to link Byron York’s piece in today’s Examiner wondering what the White House social secretary’s doing attending Donna Karan shows while The One assures us the economy’s disintegrating.

I asked [a White House aide] whether the first lady considered Rogers’ hitting the fashion shows a little frivolous, given the seriousness of our times. “I think you’re assigning a value judgment to the fashion industry,” I was told. “She doesn’t think it is frivolous at all.”

I talked to two former White House social secretaries, one Democrat and one Republican. “I don’t really understand where fashion ties in with the social secretary’s job,” the Republican told me, “because the only fashion she needs to worry about is her own, and she has to make sure she does not eclipse the first lady…

As millions of Americans worry about losing their jobs, the first lady is celebrated on the cover of Wintour’s magazine, Vogue, where it is suggested that her “ardent championing of new names in American design” has caused some to call her the “new Jackie Kennedy.”

Why not Nancy Reagan? Mrs. Reagan’s husband also took office amid an inherited economic crisis, and she quickly became the subject of sometimes bitter criticism for her fondness for high fashion — for “exercising her opulent tastes in an economy that is inflicting hardship on so many,” in the words of a 1981 New York Times article.

Exit question: If First Lady Cindy McCain’s secretary was seen scouting out Vera Wang haute couture while Maverick announced a $3 trillion budget, that’d all be part of her “cool” too, no?

Blowback

Homeliest, maybe.

I think she’s stylish and all, and not at all bad looking (although she needs braces). But I wish her and her husband utter failure.

“Cool”only to the left wing media; for the rest of us she’s at best mundane. Although it shouldn’t be surprising that the mainstream media should revel over a modern Marxist.

Michelle needs to scout out good designers to create fashions that can hide her massive cojones, which she clearly has in order to do stuff like this and get away with it.

Carol Platt Liebau was standing in for Hugh Hewitt a couple of days ago, and she played audio of Michelle Obama telling a roomful of Department of Agriculture bureaucrats that they were “the backbone of America”. And of course, in the eyes of the Obamas and the Dems, the paper-pushing, red-tape-weaving, tale-telling, ass-covering, dependent-on-government, job-for-life robots ARE the backbone of a America – a socialist America with its spirit broken.

And there’s no way I’m watching that video by the way.

Uhhh, that’s exactly what Michelle Obama’s doing and everyone at CNN is missing the irony because they’re too busy calling her “cool.”

Of course, I don’t want a first lady or a President to be called “cool”. I want them to be called competent, but given what’s happened in the One’s administration thus far, that ain’t gonna happen.

Condoleeza Rice was hounded for shopping during the Katrina rescue efforts. Not that she had anything to do with them, but it was supposed to be tone deaf. I’ve heard about that time after time.

So I don’t know why attending fashion week during this pre-catastrophe time is any less tone-deaf.

I’m guessing Donna Karan has offered to give clothes to MO, and the social secretary was there selecting them.

All Im saying is they need to practice what they preach.

Obama calls for the peons to sacrifice, but he does not. They have the most lavish immaculation, super bowl parties, eat expensive steak(I heard the sale of steak is down, the sale of ground beef up), buy expensive comic books, redecorate the WH using the most expensive designer they could find and now this fashion week bs.

Why isnt he redistributing his wealth?

becki51758 on February 27, 2009 at 11:12 AM
