The obligatory “nutroots tries to smear Jindal over Katrina” post

posted at 5:20 pm on February 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

This is so moronic that I wouldn’t even acknowledge it if not for the fact that I’m strapped for content. In a nutshell: Eager to prove that every last conservative in America is guilty of something vis-a-vis Katrina, TPM zeroed in on a passage from Jindal’s rebuttal speech about a visit he made to the local sheriff in the aftermath. Quote:

During Katrina, I visited Sheriff Harry Lee, a Democrat and a good friend of mine. When I walked into his makeshift office I’d never seen him so angry. He was yelling into the phone: ‘Well, I’m the Sheriff and if you don’t like it you can come and arrest me!’ I asked him: ‘Sheriff, what’s got you so mad?’ He told me that he had put out a call for volunteers to come with their boats to rescue people who were trapped on their rooftops by the floodwaters. The boats were all lined up ready to go – when some bureaucrat showed up and told them they couldn’t go out on the water unless they had proof of insurance and registration. I told him, ‘Sheriff, that’s ridiculous.’ And before I knew it, he was yelling into the phone: ‘Congressman Jindal is here, and he says you can come and arrest him too!’ Harry just told the boaters to ignore the bureaucrats and start rescuing people.

Aha!, says TPM, digging through the news archives. The visit to Sheriff Lee didn’t occur “during Katrina” at all; it occurred, er, a few days later, which certainly isn’t “during.” And what’s more, there’s no evidence that Jindal used his congressional authority to help get those boats in the water, as the speech suggests (but doesn’t assert). Lee did it all by himself.

Which brings us to this. Direct from Jindal’s office, it’s archive video of none other than Sheriff Harry Lee (who passed away two years ago) endorsing Jindal for governor. Why? Because he was so helpful and hands-on in using his congressional authority to assist the recovery effort after Katrina, which included … a personal visit to Lee’s office “the day after” the storm. Nuance. I’ll let Jim Treacher take it from there.

Proof that Jindal is a threat to the opposition.

Nutroots hate Palin and Jindal. The perfect pair to destroy Obama’s chances in 2012.

jencab on February 27, 2009 at 5:25 PM

this is what we are up against, think about that when Jindal or Palin or anyone does something that needs to defending.

rob verdi on February 27, 2009 at 5:26 PM

1. In his story he says people were being rescued. They didn’t need to be rescued until after the hurricane hit.

2. In the story it doesn’t even make it sound as though Jindal offered but that the Sheriff jumped with it.

What’s sad is to read the TPM comments. They attack this fake story with the ferocity and seriousness of a rabid chihuahua. The first commenter manages to take a swipe at all “Rethuglicans.”

These people are mean spirited, ignorant, and willing to believe truly anything about their political rivals.

The Democrats are starting to remind me of that episode of the Brady Bunch where the parents told Greg to do something and when he did it all half assed and they tried to punish him he threw it in their face that that they hadn’t been specific and he was just following their “exact words”. Then the parents made Greg live for a work under “exact words” and he learned his lesson.

They want to impale Bobby becuse he said “during” Katrina as opposed to “the day after the storm”, they are just silly people.

I have to hand it to the Dems. They start early on smearing a potential national opponent. The amount of hate tossed Jindal’s way on the net the past few days has been amazing.

A couple of Joes would be proud with the way the Democrats who ruled Louisiana at the time totally screwed the pooch on Katrina, then enlisted their allies in the national Democrat-controlled mainstream media to shift all of the national blame for their own failures to the evil Bush. Mission Accomplished.

This despite the fact that the evil Bush declared a state of emergency there days before the storm hit, and despite the fact that the US Coast Guard rescued over 10,000 people from their rooftops in the first 72 hours. Remember, FEMA has always told state and local governments not to expect them for the first 3 days.

I really miss Harry Lee… and while Jindal’s not perfect – I can find a lot there to criticize – he’s a damn sight better than we’re used to having, and when he’s had a bit more seasoning (hey, it’s Louisiana, after all!) will do a lot of good to the rest of the country.

Laura on February 27, 2009 at 5:36 PM

Great comment at TPM:

all Jindal did was continue the Republican tradition of rejecting the rule of law for expediency sake, like they did n 2000 in order to bully and steal their way into gov’t.

So when Republican bureaucrats “let people drown” because of the rules, they’re evil and hate black people. When they instead look past these rules, they’re evil and election-robbers. I’m starting to see how this works….

I agree that the comments are sad. What was worst were the ones from Liberals that are vehemently racist. Liberals are truly the worst sort of racist that exists. They truly believe that because they’re on the side that the majority of ethnic minorities vote, it really doesn’t matter what racist views they hold and utter. It’s like they believe that giving hand outs to minorities is some kind of penance. Which is kind of odd since that’s a sort of religious moral tone like saying ‘Hail Mary’s and yet they aren’t quite that religious.

Yea, the nutroots tried that on Reagan too. Their only problem was that the people of this country actually believe what Reagan was saying. Unlike the RINOs who say what the think that they’re supposed to say, Reagan said what he believed and carried 49 states in his re-election. You have to wonder why the RINOs don’t get that. They’re so afraid of the liberal media, they always try to sound like liberals but it never ever works.

You won’t ever hear Jindal speak like a liberal and that’s what scares the hell out of them. I can’t wait for him to run for national office. The liberals will lose what little sanity they have left.

BREAKING

TPM asserts Katrina Crisis was only one day long.

All looting and chaos in New Orleans in the weeks after the hurricane apparently normal activity. FEMA response during crisis now upgraded to excellent. Bush administration absolved of federal response to the non-crisis events. Once the crisis ended, FEMA had no jurisdiction.

Former Louisiana legislator (who did not want to be identified future political reasons) says “since the actual crisis only lasted for a few hours, the associated failure falls squarely onto the State and local officials. We blew it, not Bush.”

Leftists’ thought processes and cognitive functions are not like those of normal people.

They can have extremely long memories-say, going back to the early 1960s, when “First Lady Laura Bush” killed a high school classmate in a traffic accident.

Yet when you ask them about Bill Clinton accusing bin Laden of being in cahoots with Iraq in 1998, suddenly they get amnesia.

Lying and misleading is perfectly fine (and natural) for the liberal left because they have no moral obligation to live up to. Besides, they are appealing to the dumb and ignorant who will never see or hear the rebuttal. All they need is 50.1%, a strong showing from the cemetery vote, and as many ACORN multiple voters that they can buy. It is not about truth but style and perception.

Maybe conservatives will finally get some balls and start some “investigative reporting” (read: manufactured smear sites) like Talking Points Memo that feeds fake but accurate news stories to our branches of the media like Fox News?

Guess what gang, they are absolutely killing us in the media war because frankly we’re totally retarded when it comes to this stuff. We should have our own version of Talking Points Memo making up batshit insane stories and blasting them all over the web, talk radio, and broadcast news. But we’re dumb, so all we do is sit here on Hot Air and Ace of Spades and whine about how terrible Democrats are.

Either we’re going to get our shit together and get some actual conservative infrastructure built that will smear and destroy liberals like they’re doing to us, or this is going to turn into a one party country very quickly.

Evolve or die. Sitting here reading news stories and whining doesn’t do shit when they crush us in the smear cycle every day with no pushback at all.

The only damage done here is to AP’s BS detector, for buying yet mo’ spin from Jindal’s aide.

starfleet_dude on February 27, 2009 at 8:07 PM

The story is a paper tiger even if it were true. You were probably right there helping deliver supplies and assisting others in New Orleans from the first day right?

Why don’t you ask Blanco why she did not activate the State Police until two days AFTER the storm hit?

As a loyal Conservative GOP Volunteer [of 8 years] I hereby select you to do all that you see needing to be done.

Better get started.

DannoJyd on February 27, 2009 at 8:23 PM

Either we’re going to get our shit together and get some actual conservative infrastructure built that will smear and destroy liberals like they’re doing to us, or this is going to turn into a one party country very quickly.
Tabris on February 27, 2009 at 8:19 PM

Conservatives actually have principles. Lying is wrong included.

I would rather lose political viability than compromise core beliefs.

darclon on February 27, 2009 at 8:24 PM

Darclon, don’t be naive. We do the same things, they just have been doing it better lately.

Either we step up our game or we’re done.

Tabris on February 27, 2009 at 8:32 PM

Tabris, here is something for you to share with your friends. It is no lie, it has a beat, and the message is unmistakable.

DannoJyd on February 27, 2009 at 8:37 PM

Tabris on February 27, 2009 at 8:32 PM

It’s not naivete, I just think that we can push back without the outright corruption of morality. They invented this game, why should we play along?

The problem with conservatives are that they actually have jobs and at least try to be polite. We can be much more aggressive without compromising our core ideology. Conservatives need to hit the metaphorical weights and get in political shape, get off of their butts (even if tired from work), and the sleeping giant will awaken.

darclon on February 27, 2009 at 8:38 PM

Guess what gang, they are absolutely killing us in the media war because frankly we’re totally retarded when it comes to this stuff. We should have our own version of Talking Points Memo making up batshit insane stories and blasting them all over the web, talk radio, and broadcast news.

No. We don’t need batshit insane stories. The truth is ample, we just need to communicate it more forcefully and effectively. And there’s not justification for acting the way the libs act; we do NOT need to validate it by sinking to their level.

Either we’re going to get our shit together and get some actual conservative infrastructure built that will smear and destroy liberals like they’re doing to us, or this is going to turn into a one party country very quickly.

I agree with you that we need some infrastructure, but more than that, we need to buckle down and figure out exactly what we believe and are willing to fight for. To me, that means driving the RINOs out starting with John McCain; but on the other hand, Huckabee would like to see “Shi’ite Republicans” like me driven out. We need to settle our fights internally and then turn and face the Dems with a united front.

We did this in the Contract for America and it can be done again. But what we’re lacking isn’t strategy, it’s a unified core belief of what we’re supposed to be and do.

This is so pathetic. It really is. There is no way this makes Jindal a liar. The really pathetic thing is that the Democrats who were running LA did such a sucky job of taking care of their constituents. The graft that robbed money that should have gone to taking care of infrastructure, the LA Homeland Security people who turned away the Red Cross, the Governor who refused for days to let federal troops in… the list goes on. The Coast Guard did their job, the National Guard did their job..the national press and the national Democratic party lied about the casualty numbers, lied about the conditions and used the misery and suffering of others for their own gain.

And now morons like you are going after Jindal who was actually there in Louisiana, on the ground when all this happened. Morons.

an adult with the nick– starfleet dude–

hahahahahaha

interesting the moron is more worried about this story than the joke of a mayor and governor involved.would be hilarious if not so sad.

Laura:

No, it does not mean driving out the RINOs starting with John McCain. So, who gets to decide who the RINOs are? Are you looking to become a permanent a minority where only the pure and true 5% can be a member. There can be no dissent. A few people will decide exactly what believe and everyone else will have to leave.

Why would people want to be a part of that? Alienating people, running people off, sending them away only diminishes the appeal and the numbers.

John McCain has been a Republican for decades. He was a Republican before Jindal was even born. And he was the Republican who other Republicans gave the nomination to, so exactly who is going to run him out of the party? And he gave Palin the VP nod and with that nod he gave her a chance.

And most conservatives do like her.

Obama might not be president today if some of these pure, true conservatives had gotten out and voted. And Pelosi and Reid might not be running the Congress if they had turned out in 2006. It seems to me that a lot of them expect a kind of loyalty they are not prepared to give in return.
