Hey, who’s up for renewing the assault weapons ban? Update: Not Pelosi

posted at 2:00 pm on February 26, 2009 by Allahpundit

Gotta give Eric Holder credit: His use of “just a few” here is simply a masterpiece of ominous rhetorical efficiency.

You can’t say you weren’t warned.

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

“As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons,” Holder told reporters…

Holder declined to offer any time frame for the reimplementation of the assault weapons ban, however.

“It’s something, as I said, that the president talked about during the campaign,” he said. “There are obviously a number of things that are — that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so, I’m not sure exactly what the sequencing will be.”

Combine this with the fact that demand for guns has been booming for months and we should see the price of semi-automatics blow sky high. Any ban will have to survive two challenges: One, obviously, will be a goal-line stand by the Supreme Court’s conservative majority in applying the Heller decision, but count on smilin’ Anthony Kennedy to “find his conscience” and switch sides if it gets that far. The more serious obstacle is convincing a majority in the House to vote for it. An NRA spokesman tells the Standard he expects 60+ Blue Dogs — roughly the number endorsed by the group two years ago — to oppose a ban, but I think he’s kidding himself. It’s one thing to be pro-gun when there’s a Republican majority and no chance of the ban coming back; it’s another thing to do it when there’s a serious chance of passage and the prestige of a new president from your own party is riding on it. I’ll bet it passes — narrowly. Exit question: Will the Centrist Three in the Senate join with the GOP to filibuster? Specter’s pretty good on guns.

Update: Looks like I spoke way, way too soon. Clearly, Madam Speaker doesn’t think she has the votes.

Attorney General Eric Holder raised the prospect Wednesday that the administration would push to bring back the ban. But Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicated on Thursday that he never talked to her. The Speaker gave a flat “no” when asked if she had talked to administration officials about the ban.

“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “I think it’s clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.”

Presumably they’ll revisit the issue after the midterms if they pick up a few more liberal seats in the House.

For versatility at a price most can afford, I always suggest a mossy 500 with a pistol-grip and [top] folding stock. For a first-time gun, it’s easy to use and maintain, and durable as hell.

It’ll put wabbit and squirrel in the pot, deer in the freezer, and thugs in the grave.

A shotgun, yes, if you are a very bad shot. Your best bet however remains the AR-15 for general-purpose social encounters.

pseudonominus on February 26, 2009 at 2:25 PM
As a 15 year veteran of the police department, I must disagree with you on this.
For home defense I always recommend a shotgun with bird shot! The reasons are simple:
1. Most home intruders are shot at very close range, inside of 6 feet. Bird shot will do a marvelous job of stopping the threat at that range.
2. If you miss, and believe me, when the threat level is maxed out, missing is the rule and not the exception, you won’t kill your children in the next room! Sheetrock will slow down the shot enough that it won’t cause death or serious injury in most cases!
3. It is point and shoot. No leveling, no aiming!
I do, however, agree that an AR or similar “assault rifle” is a MUST HAVE for anyone who is concerned about having to fight for what they believe is worth killing for!

fumpbump on February 26, 2009 at 2

Generally agree with the veteran LEO. Hard to miss with a shotgun at close range. I tend to use turkey shot, though (size 4 and 5 shot) rather than size 7 or 8 quail shot. My compromise in stopping power vs. chance of collateral damage. Buckshot can penetrate walls also, so it is not my “nightstand” load of choice. Just feel the larger shot penetrates better but is less pentrating than buckshot. I also use hollow points in my sidearm for the same reason, good stopping power, less chance of shooting through the wall into my furnace or dog. Just my 2 cents.

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

Is that the weird plastic SEAL one with the crazy, loopy feed?

riverrat10k on February 26, 2009 at 2:57 PM

No, the P7 is the smal 9mm with squeeze-cocker grip. Astoundingly accurate, and very concealable.

pseudonominus on February 26, 2009 at 3:26 PM

I’ll see you at the “Re-education” camp!

fumpbump on February 26, 2009 at 3:25 PM

Be_Aware on February 26, 2009 at 3:27 PM

Who cares how he got the gun? The only thing I would be worried about is getting the stain out of the carpet when he bleeds out of the holes I just made.

theotherKate on February 26, 2009 at 3:25 PM

Hey, maybe you could get some stimulus money to replace the carpet!!!

Be_Aware on February 26, 2009 at 3:28 PM

Don’t forget that many of these same nutjobs who will give you that answer despise hunting as well. They like to kill unborn human babies, but Bambi must live!

flyfisher

Maybe if we killed bambi in the womb they’d be more comfortable with hunting…

I sleep better at night knowing that liberals who are afraid of guns probably don’t own one and when this battle moves from blog arguments…

If gun ownership is a free speech issue, then by that logic why arent people legally allowed to use heroin or drive on the wrong side of the road whenever they like. Answer because its pretty hard to kill someone with words

Since you seem to be having trouble understanding the Consititution angle here, let’s forgo the 1st and 2nd amendments.

How about I go ahead and billet some troops in your house for shits and giggles?

Perhaps we’ll do away with that pesky Miranda warning and 5th amendment if you get busted?

Or maybne we should rethink all of the Amendments since they were written by some guys over 200 years ago. If the 2nd has no relevance nowadays, someone with your warped thinking could make the case that ANY of them they don’t happen to like can be done away with.

Or are you being an obstinate a-hole because you’re a trolling libtard?

catmman on February 26, 2009 at 3:29 PM

There is roughly one gun per citizen in this nation.

Last year, there were about 10,000 murders committed with firearms.

300,000,000 firearms – 10,000 used in murders = 299,990,000 firearms that killed no one.

299,990,000/300,000,000 = 99.99% of guns in America that killed no one last year.

Do you get it yet?

MadisonConservative on February 26, 2009 at 2:57 PM

Damn, you beat me to it; I was going to post the same thing, but had to go to lunch.

Looking at it from that perspective, in fact Firearms must be the one of safest products available in mass ownership. I mean, look how many people are killed by cars each year.

But its easy to destroy a society, just ask our MSM about their “indepth” analysis and reporting about Obama.

johnsteele on February 26, 2009 at 3:22 PM

THAT is Friggan hilarious!!!

EagleClaw on February 26, 2009 at 3:31 PM

I’m not going through 5 pages of posts, but even the ATF/FBI’s own reports state the AWB band did not decrease any crime whatsoever.

tx2654 on February 26, 2009 at 3:31 PM

O.K you guys are all obviuisly entitled to your opinion, but can anyone on this thread honestly tell me that you think America is a safer country thanks to widespread gun ownership

Equanim1ty found on February 26, 2009 at 3:31 PM

The Right to Keep & Bear Arms is the ONLY RIGHT that ensures, guarantees and preserves ALL other Rights & Freedoms. Also just to be clear, the 2nd Amendment is not about owning a hunting rifle.
