Hey, who’s up for renewing the assault weapons ban? Update: Not Pelosi
posted at 2:00 pm on February 26, 2009 by Allahpundit
Gotta give Eric Holder credit: His use of “just a few” here is simply a masterpiece of ominous rhetorical efficiency.
You can’t say you weren’t warned.
The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.
“As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons,” Holder told reporters…
Holder declined to offer any time frame for the reimplementation of the assault weapons ban, however.
“It’s something, as I said, that the president talked about during the campaign,” he said. “There are obviously a number of things that are — that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so, I’m not sure exactly what the sequencing will be.”
Combine this with the fact that demand for guns has been booming for months and we should see the price of semi-automatics blow sky high. Any ban will have to survive two challenges: One, obviously, will be a goal-line stand by the Supreme Court’s conservative majority in applying the Heller decision, but count on smilin’ Anthony Kennedy to “find his conscience” and switch sides if it gets that far. The more serious obstacle is convincing a majority in the House to vote for it. An NRA spokesman tells the Standard he expects 60+ Blue Dogs — roughly the number endorsed by the group two years ago — to oppose a ban, but I think he’s kidding himself. It’s one thing to be pro-gun when there’s a Republican majority and no chance of the ban coming back; it’s another thing to do it when there’s a serious chance of passage and the prestige of a new president from your own party is riding on it. I’ll bet it passes — narrowly. Exit question: Will the Centrist Three in the Senate join with the GOP to filibuster? Specter’s pretty good on guns.
Update: Looks like I spoke way, way too soon. Clearly, Madam Speaker doesn’t think she has the votes.
Attorney General Eric Holder raised the prospect Wednesday that the administration would push to bring back the ban. But Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicated on Thursday that he never talked to her. The Speaker gave a flat “no” when asked if she had talked to administration officials about the ban.
“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “I think it’s clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.”
Presumably they’ll revisit the issue after the midterms if they pick up a few more liberal seats in the House.

LimeyGeek on February 26, 2009 at 2:45 PM
This is simple. Guns should only be used by people with the proper training and skills, in other words, people with the tools to use them properly.
Words should be treated the same. There are too many people who are using them in here, and in Washington, who do not have the tools to use them! In other words, it is like having a battle of wits with an unarmed person!

The point you were desperately trying to make was that a kid killed his dad’s girlfriend with a gun, and minus the gun the murder would never have occurred.
You need to be a better study of human nature and understand that desire to commit harm will not be constrained by lack of access to firearms.
One kid kills with a gun, balanced by millions who don’t, including mine.

For once, the ban will disarm law abiding citizens, while having no effect on criminals. Remember, criminals don’t care about laws. They’ll get their REAL assault rifles (something a semi-automatic AK-47 replica with pistol grip is NOT), ban or not.
Secondly, who is going to help you when you’re attacked/robbed or worse… your family is being threatened by an armed intruder? The police? They usually come too late. And they can’t be everywhere anyway.
Thirdly, ever heard the saying “an armed society is a polite society”? Why do you think the Japanese developed such artistic forms of politeness? Because feudal Japan was better armed than the Wild West. There were, literally, millions of swords and lances around, tens of thousands of bows and guns. In order to survive you had to be polite, whether commoner or samurai (even though samurai were armed to the teeth themselves it’s a fact that they tried to avoid confrontation with other samurai, because there was simply no guarantee that one would walk out of a fight alive.)
Penguin on February 26, 2009 at 2:47 PM

When the constitution was written the founding fathers had just fought a war against the government of Mad King George, who was until the success of their colonial revolt was their king. So they wrote the second amendment to ensure their descendants would have the same options when the US of A became a Tyranny.

So what? The kid is deranged. Better they do something NOW to him then find out he is a serial killer later.

I own several handguns as well as a Henry rifle. I thought about stocking up on lowers last year but never got around to it. I’m just not the “assault weapon” type. Of course, there is no such thing as an assault weapon.
It always kills me when the ban discussion is brought up by Dems. They seem totally unaware that only two police (or some such equally small number) have actually been shot and killed with an “assault weapon” in the last ~15 years. Criminals just don’t use them! They use handguns almost exclusively.
BierManVA on February 26, 2009 at 2:51 PM
By conservative estimates, there is practically a firearm for every man, woman & child in this nation…owned by a third of the population…residing in around half the homes.
Any way you slice it, we have massive and widespread levels of firearm ownership.
Balance this with the enourmous annual sales of ammunition, and you can see that not only do we own vast quantities of firearms, but we are making massive use of them….mostly recreationally, of course, but there is plenty of utilitarian, hunting and defensive use in there too – defensive use being in the minority.
We make such huge use of our firearms, and guess what? We aren’t all dropping like flies. In fact, we annually demonstrate what a mature and competent nation we are.
You expect the vast majority of sane, competent and responsible gun-owners to throw in the towel because you break into a hand-wringing sweat over a statistically insignificant number of arguably abherrant events?
We don’t have a ‘gun problem’, we predominantly have a ‘thug culture’ problem – disproportionately weighted towards black society.

It is similar in that people that gain power over people want to keep that power over them, and will go about doing so by means of taking away certain of their rights – including owning guns.
When I hear that someone wants to start restricting gun-ownership, I automatically think of how it will affect me, either immediately or later, should some major change in government occur.

You must have missed this part of the story:
”An 11-year-old boy shot his father’s pregnant girlfriend in the back of the head while she was lying in bed in their western Pennsylvania farmhouse, then got on the school bus and went to school, authorities … ”
Lying in bed, as in probably not crouched in a ninja-pose, preparing to fend off the attack.
Had the boy had a stick, it probably would have ended the same way; the girlfriend was asleep and had little chance.

Living was tougher. Most everyone was focused on food, clothing and shelter and they did not demand that their fellow citizens pay for such needs.
Today food, clothing and shelter are not an issue for a great majority of our citizens, yet many demand fellow citizens pay for such needs.
