Video: Michelle’s got a fee-vah and the only prescription is fewer earmarks

A righteous cause, and needless to say she’s 100 percent right both about The One’s shameless (and longstanding) earmark hypocrisy and the fact that this amounts to de facto theft of taxpayer money by incumbents to improve their chances of re-election. Even so, does the public really care about this issue? Not one in a hundred people on the street, I expect, could correctly define “earmark,” and given the kind of money Congress is tossing around these days, I’m skeptical that many more would care much about $5 billion or $8 billion or whatever the amount is of pork in this bill. Sad to say, but I think the public’s willing to tolerate billion-dollar corruption as the cost of doing political business so long as the overall spending package gets results. If it doesn’t, that’s how we’ll win, not by making earmarks a cornerstone of good government reform. Just ask Maverick.

DrStock on February 25, 2009 at 7:53 PM

Hate to go off-topic, but David Cameron’s 6-year-old son died.

amerpundit on February 25, 2009 at 7:55 PM

Point taken; regardless I think the conversation is important because it illustrates Obama as a liar.

Michelle is completely right about the need for conversation on the proper role of government right now.

Spirit of 1776 on February 25, 2009 at 7:55 PM

The taxpayer will care when he gets the bill.

GarandFan on February 25, 2009 at 7:59 PM

Yeah, agreed. But I fear the result of that conversation is: Everything is proper.

Allahpundit on February 25, 2009 at 7:59 PM

I bet Obama lets it go through, saying it really was part of Bush’s budget, and he only promised to veto bills with earmarks in his budgets, which haven’t started yet…

Bush41’s problem was when he said no new taxes, he went and raised people’s taxes. People don’t mind earmarks as long as they get theirs, so Obama will get away with it, and he doesn’t have the nads to stand up to Nancy and Harry.

Wethal on February 25, 2009 at 7:59 PM

If it doesn’t, that’s how we’ll win,…..

That’s right, as Michelle says;

“Put a spotlight on it….!”

Seven Percent Solution on February 25, 2009 at 7:59 PM

But I fear the result of that conversation is: Everything is proper.

Yeah, true.

Spirit of 1776 on February 25, 2009 at 8:02 PM

Obama’s greatest talent seems to be the ability to tell bald-faced lies with a straight face.

29Victor on February 25, 2009 at 8:07 PM

Wait a minute,I’m not going to fooled here,
by those crafty Lefty’s,

canopfor on February 25, 2009 at 8:09 PM

My gosh, Michelle is getting more beautiful every year. She looks fantastic.

ILB on February 25, 2009 at 8:10 PM

Pork is just the small tip of the iceberg. It’s spending, and the commitments made continue this new spending. Fiscal conservatism is dead. We are marching toward the greatest market distortion in modern history. Apparently those quasi-marxist failed states were doing something right, or so the new ruling class believes.

nondhimmie on February 25, 2009 at 8:14 PM

This is all a distraction from The One’s agenda /s

tank_killer69 on February 25, 2009 at 8:18 PM

Why spend all that money on studying swine odor, when they just go spend some time with Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and just save some bucks?

pilamaye on February 25, 2009 at 8:18 PM

Allahpundit is right, you guys are WAY too focused on earmarks.

Give people a solid reason to support you in this climate.

This Porkulus debate is getting REALLY OLD.

This Porkulus debate is getting REALLY OLD.

ckoeber on February 25, 2009 at 8:26 PM

Yeah, talking about the $1 trillion stimulus bill and $410 billion spending bill is, like, so yesterday. So is massive, out-of-control government spending. Nevermind that inflation is already on the rise and will continue, becoming a major issue, and the bill will eventually come. Let’s just move on to more important things. Did you see that Britney’s ex plead guilty to felonies?! Like, nu uh!

amerpundit on February 25, 2009 at 8:31 PM

amerpundit on February 25, 2009 at 7:55 PM

God bless Mr. Cameron’s family.

youngTXcon on February 25, 2009 at 8:45 PM

canopfor on February 25, 2009 at 8:03 PM

She bolted up out of her chair and applauded him. What a hypocrite.

Joe Caps on February 25, 2009 at 8:50 PM

Thanks for posting the video.

Michelle is right on, the Chicago Thug knows there are earmarks in those bills and yet has the nads to denounces earmarks. All this proves is that he has very little regard for “We the People”. It is that lack of respect for the people he serves that is galling and this lack of respect should be exposed. The GOP has an opening to separate themselves from the tax and spend majority. They should jump on this opportunity.

Zorro on February 25, 2009 at 8:51 PM

Somebody should make a video montage of Obama rallying against earmarks from various speeches and have a ticker running along the bottom itemizing all the earmarks in the Omnibus. The clearer the double-speak becomes to Americans the quicker they will turn on him.

Joe Caps on February 25, 2009 at 8:57 PM

Uhhh, pigs stink because they are barnyard critters who roll around in their own sh!t.

OmahaConservative on February 25, 2009 at 10:00 PM

Republicans own 40% of the earmarks in this new Omnibus bill. I will believe that this party is serious about it’s conservative roots if they’d put it in practice at every turn. Conservatives should demand that every Republican leader who has a pet project on this bill, PULL IT. You want to be voted to represent conservative ideology? Prove it. Until then, you are just another self-serving politician.

pjean on February 25, 2009 at 10:11 PM

None of them can be trusted. They manipulate their votes very easily. Vote nay when you know your vote isn’t needed for it to pass. Look good at home and still get the desired results. Can’t believe any of them have any principles they actually believe in anymore. On The Record just had a republican Senator (can’t remember his name) he continually deflected the question about earmarks and went to his talking points. So obvious he didn’t want to have to defend the republicans who represent 40% of them. I don’t care if they are d’s or r’s in my mind they are all A’s.

hillbilly on February 25, 2009 at 10:23 PM

Where in the hell is Coleman? We need his vote in the senate and we need it NOW!!!
Funny how that whole story just seemed to fade away when we need to shine the light on it the most!
Jeeeeezzzzzzzz-I could have counted the ballots by myself by now. Are these people that incompetent?…

Nelsa on February 25, 2009 at 10:29 PM

Liar, liar……

Johan Klaus on February 25, 2009 at 10:34 PM

He is SUCH a great liar. I think that’s why he beat the Clintons. He simply out-lied them.

Mojave Mark on February 25, 2009 at 10:49 PM

Obama is parsing words like a sleazy lawyer (depends what the meaning of ‘is’ is).

While this cr@p is pure unadulterated PORK, what do you want to bet that it isn’t quite the legal definition of ‘earmarks’? I heard some twit on the radio today with this Wiki definition:

“In US politics, an earmark is a congressional provision that directs approved funds to be spent on specific projects or that directs specific exemptions from taxes or mandated fees.”

The piggy Democrats are in HOG heaven, whatever the legal definition is.

Like Michelle said: it’s a re-election slush funds for incumbent politicians.

rockbend on February 25, 2009 at 10:55 PM

“The piggy Democrats are in HOG heaven, whatever the legal definition is.”

Should have said “The piggy Congress is in HOG heaven, whatever the legal definition is.

rockbend on February 25, 2009 at 10:58 PM

Always so good to see Michelle telling it like it is. Brightens my day. Thanks Michelle, you nailed it — again!

Christian Conservative on February 25, 2009 at 10:58 PM

Michelle is a goddess and incredibly intelligent. Anything she says is always right. If you don’t believe that just ask Bill OReilly.

workingforpigs on February 25, 2009 at 11:21 PM

Michelle for president! And I do not mean Obama.

Johan Klaus on February 25, 2009 at 11:32 PM

Earmarks are a good issue, but they can’t win alone. The GOP can score points talking about earmarks, especially after the spending of the last year. Remember, in the Campaign, remember, Obama promised to cut spending, which is why Maverick’s rhetoric was ineffective, coupled with the fact that all he could talk about were earmarks.

SalAOR on February 26, 2009 at 6:21 AM

Obama promised to cut spending, but he has spent $62 bullion since he became president.

Funny how the Dems think thats Ok..but then say George Bush was the biggest spender in history.

becki51758 on February 26, 2009 at 8:01 AM

bullion=billion

becki51758 on February 26, 2009 at 8:02 AM

She’s right , and it has to be told and repeated . It will get credit when the pixiedust clears.

And , the debt for these earmarks, How do that help Michelle’s kids.

As long as people think spending=stimulating they don’t get the problem with earmarks.

the_nile on February 26, 2009 at 8:02 AM

Earmarks and pork are bad as long as it is for someone else. But, if it is for me (or my State) it is OK.

Let’s make how we define/classify pork. Living in a Demographic controlled State we get considerable $$$$ from D.C. However, when the funds are strictly for infrastructure projects or other government regulated program. Pork is $$$$$ provided to those programs or projects that have nothing to do with the governance of this country.

It is important that the difference be understood, least we put unnecessary exposure on politicians who are trying to the right thing for their state.

MSGTAS on February 26, 2009 at 9:18 AM

Obama and the Democrats have brought America to her knees in surrender. All that’s left now is the beheading.

RandyChandler on February 26, 2009 at 9:37 AM

“Obama’s greatest talent seems to be the ability to tell bald-faced lies with a straight face.”

Please. What a terrible thing to say about Dear Leader.

Can he really do it better than Vice- Dear Leader.

Wait a minute…you may have something there. Omaha, they owe you 1.8 mil.

My God! How did they forget the study of fish retina!!!

DrStock on February 25, 2009 at 7:53 PM

Harry Reid gets 2 mil for congressional clothespins. No more smelly tourists!

unwashed minion on February 26, 2009 at 12:47 PM

Okay, so Obama is another lying politician. How many well known lying politicians in the last few elections got re-elected? A bunch. The politicians know that the Public has a lot of wants and if they lie about somethings, even important things, it just gets to be a little noise in the medicine show and they will get re-elected again. Our system of government is much too coarse a filter for such lies and the benefiting powers that be don’t want and will not make “real change”. Lying is just part of the only game in DC.

Glenn Beck did that today.

On a much less substantive note, is Michelle growing her hair out? I like.
