Video: Jindal, take 2; Update: AOL Hot Seat Poll added

posted at 12:00 pm on February 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Bobby Jindal bounced back this morning from a generally-panned performance to an energetic performance on Today. He gives Meredith Viera a slew of specifics, arguing with more intensity about the pitfalls of Porkulus:

I didn’t think he did that bad of a job last night, but this certainly seems more assertive and less “robotic”, as many critics concluded about his performance last night. Michael Kraskin at AOL says the expectations are out of line:

The President, Bush or Obama, arrives behind Washington luminaries like the Supreme Court justices and cabinet members. The applause goes on for upwards of 10 minutes. Then they get to deliver a speech in which nearly every sentence gets a reaction from thousand or so assembled audience members. There are cheers, there is anger. Every person in the room is keenly aware that they could be on camera. …

Then, abruptly, cut to the response. The pascal lamb chosen to deliver the opposition response is alone in a mansion. What could be more alienating to the American people?

He or she speaks directly to the camera. There is no chance to make eye contact with a real person. There are no applause, there is no booing. The only people in the room are instructed to stay as quiet as humanly possible. If there are journalists, they are likely projecting an air of skepticism, or even worse, neutrality.

I have a solution for next year’s SOTU speech. Rent a hall and have the speaker ready to deliver his or her remarks to a room full of voters. Frankly, I’m surprised no one has thought to this already.

Update: Sound off about Jindal’s performance last night in our Hot Seat poll:

Why oh why does our side have to pander to the other side? He spent the first 1:30 praising Obama and saying what a decent, honest man he is.

Exactly. And if they want to acknowledge the “historic” nature of the idiot messiah’s term, they can do what I do and call him what he really is and what he was elected to be – The Precedent.

Now, I know that they would never do that, but I’m going to keep pushing it, anyway. It’s short, to the point, the most accurate description, makes clear exactly what the story is and is a cute play of near-homonyms.

Yes, how long do we have to hear about the “historic nature” of the Messiah? I am sick to death of it as well. I wonder if the obligatory boot licking made Jindal nervous and and set him up for “failure” in speech.
But honestly how many really watched it? He’ll bounce back.

I’d like to see an honest politician now and then…and Governor Jindal last night could have made that grade in spades by coming out and speaking plainly (and this can be done in a nice way, no anger, no rage, no disrespect, none of that) but, instead the Governor praised Obama so much that it became an embarrassment to try to bury Obama…which is what a truly honest politician would do.

We got trouble, right here in River City…got a ton of it…and no one is willing to address the elephant in the living room, and this whole financial crisis is getting more and more like the 9-11 Commission, no one willing to speak to the real causes, no one willing to speak “truth to power” as the community organizers like to say…everyone trying to cover their backsides.

Jindal should have looked at the camera, then told the production staff, aloud, “dump the cue cards and turn off the teleprompter…this ain’t no speech, this is a heart to heart with America.”

Then, the Governor could have done what he does best, speak from the heart…and tore Obama’s grand schemes a big one.

For any American who did not come away from last night’s dog and pony show is either not paying attention, too stupid to be allowed to vote, or in it up to their ears for whatever they can get out of it before anyone else gets theirs.

Jindal has the ability, the smarts, and the passion…

Sadly, it just wasn’t there last night.

C’mon, Bobby…you and Sarah, and Mike and a lot of other kids your age ARE the GOP if we ever hope to have a GOP after this administration is shown the door and beyond.

Drop the pretension and the schmarmy politeness…we don’t need that…we need it from the heart…and as honest as the day is long.

I would like someone of the loyal opposition to mention Raines, Johnson and Gorelick in the same paragraph as the now hated “bankers” who are allegedly responsible for this mess.

Jindal would have the party eating out of his hand if he included the congress criminals in his rebuttal.

Great analysis and comment. Several have brought up the possibility that RNC handlers wrote the speech and told Jindal what to do. If that’s true, what a mistake. The RNC is fairly clueless about winning.

Jindal and Palin both need to be themselves and do what they do best.

A response really shouldn’t be precanned anyway. It should really be a response. That means you need a great extemporaneous speaker who can take notes on what’s being said by Obama and immediately refute it.

From what I’ve read that would have been right down Jindal’s area of expertise. Why he didn’t just do that, I’ll never know.

If you can speak well extemporaneously, it is one of the best ways to immediately connect with your audience because the expertise of facts will be combined with the immediate emotion of reaction.

INC on February 25, 2009 at 2:39 PM

Jindal does so well with an interviewer. All his candid videos during questioning shows him shining. The rebuttal is hard because of the forum, but he will do better.

Give him a chance to pick apart the double speak from Obama and he will continue to shine.

stewardoftruth on February 25, 2009 at 2:40 PM

Marshall McLuhan said a long long time ago, “The medium is the message.”

Governor Jindal had the medium in his hands…and it was the wrong medium…a pre-canned speech.

If Governor Jindal gets on TV everyday till the cows come home refuting Obama’s praise and holler speech, it’ll strike well among the Conservative faithful, but to the rest of the nation, will be seen as the whiny death throes of them terrible nasty conservatives.

Unless the RNC, which has gotten a good chunk of my money over the past year, gets a younger crowd on board, the old guys like me will move on to our reward and the GOP will too. How to do it? “Keep it real.” Back in WWII a lot of business leaders and celebrities went around the country giving ten-minute Victory speeches. One subject, lots of “come to meetin’” rousing talk, then they moved on to the next town…was a continuous cycle across America. It worked.

Sometimes an old idea, dusted off, tweaked a bit for the newer audience, can really make a difference. We need that. It has to be unified, organized, simple, to the point, with real facts. Every time Obama takes a leap whether it is history, economics, or the price of arugula, it has to be hit hard, immediately and across a broad audience.

BTW, Mr. President, the Germans, a guy named Benz, invented the internal combustion automobile (which is why I own a Mercedes…figure they’ve been at it longer, probably know what they are doing.)

coldwarrior on February 25, 2009 at 2:50 PM

Wow – THAT (take 2) is the man I will vote for.

He’s deeper than Palin, smoother than Romney, and out-classes virtually all the other Wanna-Bes.

We have been disappointed in the past and Jindal may also let us down, but IMHO he represents America (and the world’s) best hope going forward.

GOP leadership is going to run Jindal in 2012 for two reasons:

A) To throw a bone to social cons

and mostly

B) Because they know he’ll lose (he’s just not charismatic enough to carry the day from what I’ve seen) and he makes a dandy sacrificial lamb

TheUnrepentantGeek on February 25, 2009 at 3:42 PM

I watched the video; why the hell he could not pull out something like that? I grant perhaps he was nervous, Sarah has experience in TV as a news reporter (therefore, a member of the MSM). When she is angry, hurt and disappointed at the media is because she knows and has experience in that area.

Jindal is gonna be on Sean’s radio show (streaming here right now). Besides Sarah I don’t believe there is anybody in the Republican Party that could’ve delivered no matter in what way;

CONSERVATIVES ARE LOOKED DOWN

TO this day and age.

ProudPalinFan on February 25, 2009 at 3:43 PM

Jindal was really awful last night. He was much better on the Today show this morning.

Unfortunately he’s advocated some very irrational things (teaching creationism in the public schools) which strongly taint his saner proposals. Too bad, he might’ve been a contender otherwise.

Gilda on February 25, 2009 at 3:44 PM

That’s a false representation of what occurred. I don’t know if you’re doing it deliberately or merely repeating what you’ve read elsewhere.

Jindal ignored those calling for a veto and this week signed the law that will allow local school boards to approve supplemental materials for public school science classes as they discuss evolution, cloning and global warming.

The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will have the power to prohibit materials, though the bill does not spell out how state officials should go about policing local instructional practices.

School boards are accountable to parents, as is entirely appropriate, considering that their children are their children.

Hannity backs Jindal’s content.

EXPECTATIONS

Each of us had expectations, what we wanted to be said and how we wanted it delivered.

Undoubtedly, the RNC made their expectations known in advance to Jindal.

Jindal’s on Hannity with plenty to say.

maverick muse on February 25, 2009 at 3:56 PM

Yes, we need a “leader.” No doubt about that.

But what we need more is a simple message, clear and unmistakable, a real platform that both defines the Party and defines who we permit to represent the Party at all levels, from local to state to national.

There are many great Conservative, Federalist, and Libertarian ideas out there, and great writers on all.

In more ways than one, we all are on the right side of how to fix this nation, get it where it needs to go and get past the Age of Entitlement that has pervaded our political spectrum for the past nearly 80 years.

Yes, there are differences among us…but the basics…hone in on these, find the commonality, and you will find a commonality with the majority of Americans. And this has to be accomplished sooner rather than later, lest most Americans succumb to the appeal of something for nothing, and come to actually believe that all you need is hope and change and everything will be just ducky.

No, Jindal is not yet ready for prime time, and neither is Sarah, and Mike Steele has a bit more honing to do to get the edge sharp, and Ken and Eric as well. But like it or not, these are some of the major faces of the GOP, faces of the Right for now and for the near term. Waiting around for the “right” person to come along…sorta like Sam Beckett’s play…the “right” person never just comes along.

Focusing on the personality instead of the message…that is where we got it wrong the last few times at bat.

Not focusing on the message, that’s where we got it wrong a long time before that.

If we do not develop a cohesive, solid, right message that will benefit America, then we can prance in the most charismatic, speechifying, crowd-pleasin’ candidate anyone has ever imagined…and it won’t work.

Americans are becoming addicted to freebies…going to take a lot of tough love to get them off the stuff.

It is so frustrating to hear Republicans always preface everything they say about Obama or his policies with niceties before they carefully disagree with him. I read somewhere the other day that they decided they would not attack Obama, only the Dem congressfolks. On the other hand, Dems always come out and slice and dice to pieces the Repubs. They’re never going to change – they always have to play nice so everyone will like them. NOT!!! Jindal sounded weak to me – I want to see some toughness out of our side.

Unfortunately the Lucas County Ohio Republican organization is as corrupt as they come…honest to goodness yacht-club/country club set. Many of us got nowhere with them last year during the campaign…they wanted donations and high-profile donors, and hang the platform and such…typical of too many state and local organizations these days.

I loved Reagan. I spoke with President Reagan as a young man serving his nation more than once. The established party organizations seem to be hung up on Reagan. He is, was, and in my heart, will always be one of the greatest American Presidents of all time…but, think about this…Reagan left office over 20 years ago…

How does that work with the young 18 to 30-somethings today?

Mike Steele did a housecleaning at the RNC a couple weeks ago, and too many GOPers thought that was just terrible. Me? A wonderful idea. Now, to fill in the needed positions, and soon, with those who are willing to craft the message, get it out there, and make it a necessary part of every everyday conversation.

In the meantime…go through this blog…and the Vault…and look at the hundreds of other posts by dozens of posters who have provided cogent arguments for exactly what we need to do. Cut and paste…put it in a letter or e-mail, and get these ideas out to the people in your state and local Party offices and groups…If we are not doing it from the top down, let’s get it done from the bottom up. At least that way, we will all have ownership of it all…and that will make a major difference in 2010 and 2012 and beyond.

You may not like this but it’s true. Jindal is damaged goods on the national stage as a result and no amount of wishing will make it go away.

Jindal includes creationism in his definition of “the very best science” he wants taught to his own children in public schools.

The problem is not that he believes in creationism, it’s that he regards it as science.

You know…I keep hearing the left suggest that the right has no room to talk about spending sprees, when considering the last 8 years. They wonder: “Where was the conservative concern with over-spending during that time?!” – Likewise, I wonder: “Where was the concern about “responsibility”, for the past two years, from the dems?”

But – what they don’t understand is – those 8 years are precisely why conservatives are the ones yelling the loudest and longest right now. It’s the reason why we’re STRONGLY urging our elected officials to get out of their old “go along to get along” habits of the past, and start standing up for politically conservative beliefs!

It’s not that we (conservatives) weren’t angry over W’s spending-sprees….It’s that we were tired of it then – couldn’t get the party to listen (even though we tried like hell) – and are now at our limit.

Understand this, extreme leftists: We would be just as angry if this spending binge were under the GOP moniker. I can guarantee you that!

Hitler followed Napoleon’s lead in like manner on the Russian Front.

Trumann fell through on his Korean commitment, sacrificing many men in futile malleable political gestures.

JFK dragged us through the Bay of Pigs and into VietNam, relinquishing our missile bases in Turkey.

On the bright side, I just read that my Democratic Governor is considering refusing the same stimulus money that Bobby Jindal is. Yay!

ladyingray on February 25, 2009 at 4:52 PM

As I have emphasized before, whoever is best for the GOP will hopefully come out strong in the primaries and take Obama down in the 2012 prez election. But I do…have my doubts.

Achilles on February 25, 2009 at 5:12 PM

Jindal may not have been at his best last night, but he was excellent on the Today Show and, just now, on Hannity. I think the tendency to knee-jerk is ridiculous, particularly considering this isn’t a campaign (unless you’re Obama, who remains in campaign mode). Anyway, I’m glad to have Jindal on our side.

Erich66 on February 25, 2009 at 5:32 PM

I like Jindal, and his message and stance on just about everything. A bit green, but a good solid Conservative.

However, we need someone who CONNECTS with people. Huckabee connects on a deep level with a lot of different types of people. Hell, he got elected in lib Arkansas, and did great with ZERO money against the well-funded titans of the Republican party. Remember I said this (yeah right). Huck will win in 2012.

Someone is beginning to get it:

“A Major Doctrinal Shift for Republicans”

I just got off the phone with a very plugged-in Republican strategist who told me that Republican reaction to President Obama’s speech, which the party will roll out in the next few days, will mark the beginning of a new GOP approach to opposing the president’s initiatives. (No, Bobby Jindal’s ineffective response was not part of that new approach — everyone seems a little embarrassed about that.) The Republican leadership in the House has concluded that in the stimulus debate, the GOP succeeded in dominating a number of news cycles but failed to score any points on actual policy. That, the leaders believe, has got to change.

“You’re seeing a major doctrinal shift in how Republicans are going to focus all these debates,” the strategist told me. “The key is to focus on winning the issue as opposed to winning the political moment. If you win the issue, people will think you are ready to govern.”

I asked him to elaborate a little. “With the political moment, it’s how can you find the one thing that gives you the momentary upper hand in terms of the coverage for the next six hours — as opposed to engaging the electorate in creating a structural change in their opinion on which party is better able to handle an issue.”

I really like Jindal, but I prefer the idea of 2020 for him. He’s just so very young.

Thank you! Very intelligent people hold to creationism. In fact, many detractors of creationism probably have never had an open mind concerning creationism or they have never thought that possibly it takes just as much faith to hold to evolution as it does a Creator God.

Didn’t hear his speech, read it and liked the points. Maybe content should trump delivery? After all, o does the opposite–hopes we won’t notice or analyze content if delivery is stirring enough. I think Jindal has some sound ideas, sound principles and sound values.

jeanie on February 25, 2009 at 5:50 PM

Stewart: But of course the Republican Governors have their integrity!

“Jindal: I think we just have a fundamental disagreement here. I don’t think the best way to do that is for the government to tax and borrow more money.

Stewart: Yea. That’s Bobby Jindal. Louisiana Governor, rising star in the Republican Party, and a leading anti-stimulus voice. His state has been offered $3.8 billion in federal aid. But Jindal has said, “No.” He’s only agreed to take… a little over 3.7 billion”

Wonder if SNL will do a Mr. Rogers skit.

Booby is a comedy writers dream.

getalife on February 25, 2009 at 5:56 PM

Jindal will be fine if he starts paying more attention to Louisiana and less attention to his aspirations of the Presidency. He’s not ready yet but just remember Bill Clinton in 1988 was a flop at the DNC.

roux on February 25, 2009 at 5:59 PM

FWIW, I just listened to his entire interview on Hannitys radio show on the way home and he sounded very good. I mean, very good. If he ends up being our guy, I could get behind him.

I’m going to make a pledge to try to be as understanding as I can to hear out anyone who steps forward and tries to lead the Republican Party with the only exception of Ron Paul. But I also promise I won’t say it a single time past this that what I dislike so much about him is his statements about the US Military being the biggest terrorists in Iraq. If he get it, you guys can vote for him but I promise I’ll keep my big mouth shut to give him a shot.

If the Republicans would just try to sell their guy or gal without going negative on the other candidates, I know everyone would agree we’d be better off. The negative stuff you need people to know about the other contenders will be brought out by the media in spades anyway.

I pledge!

Is that why we call Governor Jingle Bobby instead of his real name?

Republicans also tried as far as 6 years ago to warn about the sub-prime lending train wreck coming. Franks, Dodd, et al said no worries.

I try to refrain from the name calling, so don’t temp me to talk about how ironic it is for some moron to ask if I’m stupid in some poorly written comment like you sent.

Monkey, maybe since you are such an In-Our-Face-Lib, can we at least get you to admit that this has nothing to do with stimulus, everything to do with money being spent to move the country towards Socialism and there’s nothing we can do about it?

If I were on your side I would. I’d say, it’s all about changing the core of this country and the way it thinks and governs and you Conservatives can’t do a thing about it.

hawkdriver on February 25, 2009 at 6:18 PM

I love it when the media just acts as the mouth piece for the
Democrat party! I just love how she tells Jindal that Biden says the Republicans have no plan!! Hey Meredith!! Why don’t you get off your pillow and go out and act like a real journalist,,, do some fact checking,,, you’ve got an entire media organization behind you and at your disposal,,, go see for yourself if the Republicans have offered alternative plans!!! Isn’t that what journalism is suppose to be???
What is it exactly you do to earn all that money????
Just repeat statements and talking points given to you by the Dems?????
Republicans need to start treating these journalists for who they are,, advocates and associates of and for the opposition!

Why, damn it, do liberals always get away with lying?! Every Republican ought to be calling them out everytime they’re in front of a microphone. But, no, they’re too busy making nice with those bent on our destruction. They could “nicely” tell the story of how Dodd, Raines, et al, wouldn’t LET Republicans reign in Fanny and Freddie.

…in an essay Jindal wrote in 1994 for the New Oxford Review, a serious right-wing Catholic journal, Jindal narrated a bizarre story of a personal encounter with a demon, in which he participated in an exorcism with a group of college friends. And not only did they cast out the supernatural spirit that had possessed his friend, Jindal wrote that he believes that their ritual may well have cured her cancer.

Reading the article leaves no doubt that Jindal — who graduated from Brown University in 1991, was a Rhodes Scholar, and had been accepted at Yale Law School and Harvard Medical School when he wrote the essay — was completely serious about the encounter. He even said the experience “reaffirmed” his faith.

He cures cancer too.
