The obligatory “Helen Thomas makes nasty crack about Jindal?” post

Worth linking since the story’s already out there and it comes from a reporter at a major paper who seems to have witnessed it herself. Even so, especially after TV Newser and HuffPo uncritically posted the John Gibson “bright blue scrotum” smear, I’m erring on the side of out-of-context until there’s a full write-up.
Bobby Jindal was ‘pitiful,’ Helen Thomas tells film crew, right before making a ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ crack
Could be that the two comments were wholly unrelated, e.g., “What’d you think of Jindal?” and “What’d you think of the Oscars?” As, ahem, “opinionated” as St. Helen is, she’s not so stupid as to barf something like this up in public, especially with cameras rolling — I think. Exercise caution. Exit question: Come now, we’re talking about a woman here who was “born a liberal.” How could she possibly be racist?
Update: An update from Christina Bellantoni. Verdict: Case tossed out due to lack of evidence!

If this is true, then she needs to be put out of her misery. I don’t believe in forced retirement, but this is inexcusable. If a reporter made a Steppin Fetchit remark about Obama, their career(hell, their life) would be over in an instant.
And BTW, I said in a thread earlier this morning that it was only a matter of time before some wiseass drive-by made a “Slumdog Millionaire” crack. I never thought it would be this soon however.

This information came from the White House correspondent for the Washington Times. Whether she blogs it or Twitters it, it’s still her saying it with her name and reputation on the information.

It’s out there in the sense that it’s already circulating on blogs. I’m not introducing it, but a lot of our readers will have seen it anyway at Ace, MM, the Standard, etc. I wrote the post just to say that people shouldn’t jump to conclusions.
And if you look at the rest of Bellantoni’s page, it’s obvious that she was there while Thomas was speaking. She has rolling updates about other things she said.

That’s why this doesn’t pass the smell test. She had numerous quotes from Thomas but can’t remember anything about the Slumdog joke? If I was a betting gal, I’d put money on Bellantoni joking about Thomas’s reaction to Jindal’s speech and the joke backfired when it was interpreted as Thomas having said it.
