Rush: If you think Jindal reeked last night, I don’t want to hear from you again

posted at 6:10 pm on February 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

Sounds like Ace and I are now Republican personas non grata. As are an awful lot of commenters in last night’s megathread, I might add.

That’s okay. One of these days Andy Levy and I are going to start a secular, hawkish, (mostly) libertarian third party. You’re all welcome to join.

So, where are we? We as conservatives are in the wilderness, and many of you are hopeless. So we have a guy, Bobby Jindal, 37 years old, first time on the national stage, shows up last night to make a response to The Messiah. All he did was articulate what we believe. All he did was articulate opposition to what Obama is doing, with the obligatory when he’s right, we’ll work with him, just like we worked with Clinton on NAFTA, just like we worked with Clinton on welfare reform after we brought him in. These things happen. It doesn’t mean that we lose our distrust. All Bobby Jindal did was tell us what conservatism is; he used his own life story to do it; he talked about the American people making the country work. He had it all. Now, he may not have done it in the same stylistic way as Obama. I can understand the Democrats trashing the man, just as they trashed Sarah Palin. They are mean-spirited, heartless, horrible winners. But the people on our side are really making a mistake if they go after Bobby Jindal on the basis of style.

Because if you think people on our side, I’m talking to you, those of you who think Jindal was horrible, in fact, I don’t want to hear from you ever again if you think that what Bobby Jindal said was bad or what he said was wrong or not said well, because, folks, style is not going to take our country back. Solid conservatism articulated in a way that’s inspiring and understanding is what’s going to take the country back. Bobby Jindal’s 37 years old. I’ve spoken to him numerous times. He’s brilliant. He’s the real deal. I’m not coming here to defend him, he doesn’t need that. We’re going to have to figure out what we want. Do we want to have somebody in our party who can sound as smart as Obama regardless what he says and convince people to vote for us, or do we believe in a set of principles that defined this country’s founding and will return it to greatness again?

Answer: Both, and it’s amazing that a guy who worships the Great Communicator and whose own net worth has reached nine digits on the strength of his communication skills would pose that as an either/or. Jindal will shake this off but the fact remains that he blew an opportunity to turn himself into a breakout star a la Obama at the 2004 convention. He’s touted as a sort of boy genius, but a boy genius should have been able to figure out a way not to be actively bad, even if it meant being merely boring. He couldn’t, so his image took a hit. What’s the problem with admitting that? If he was doomed to fail because of the setting — and he surely wasn’t doomed to fail as badly as he did — he should have adapted by changing it and doing the speech in front of a small audience (or a big one). He’s supposed to be the solutions guy, right?

Not a big deal either way, but I’m not sure why it’s heresy to take a dim view of this. Special exit quotation for all the Dittoheads: “People who don’t believe in God believe in Obama. Agnostics, atheists, because believe me, a planeload of atheists on a jet on the way to Hawaii and three of the four engines go out, the atheists start praying to who? God. Not the ocean, to save ‘em. Everybody believes in God at some point, but not until they face their mortality. Everybody does. They have some God. Very few people think they’re it. Obama is one. I think when Obama prays, it’s to himself.”

Rush is making a very important point. This is NOT freakin American Idol!
This is our country and if you dont get that then I guess you just dont get IT.

The Libtards might just hand us our country back on a silver platter but I dont know if the Republicans have learned their lesson enough to actually take it back!
You know the whole F-up a free lunch syndrome?

Yeah, but it’s a straw man. That was my point at the end of the post. No one’s talking about “purging” Jindal, let alone for one bad speech. It’s a simple matter of expectations having been high and then being dashed. He’ll need to do better next time.

Allahpundit on February 25, 2009 at 6:36 PM

Quit it with the rationality. Did you forget that you’re supposed to be a pinko commie hitler lover that hates Sarah Palin and wants all theists to die in a fire?

No, thanks.

I was ‘egalitarian’ lst night, I didn’t watch either dude. So, judging from what AP has proclaimed here, what Rush said and what Bobby said to Meredith Viera: Two outta three ain’t bad. GO BOBBY!!!

Christine on February 25, 2009 at 6:40 PM

o lied splendidly, Jindal told the truth apparently less than artfully. Personally, I prefer the 2nd approach. ‘If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all’–pithy quote ala Thumper the bunny’s wise bunny mom.

jeanie on February 25, 2009 at 6:41 PM

I am not sure who Jindal thought his audience was last night. Conservatives have had over 8 years in the wilderness looking for a torchbearer who feels passion for our causes. Jindal thought he was introducing himself to the nation, but we are already looking for someone with a Big Stick! It’s time to use it and draw blood, Bobby.

As usual, I’ll meet you half-way.

I do agree that he created a bit of a strawman there. Whether it’s justified to make a larger point, I’ll leave to others, I don’t care for it myself, but I enjoy Rush. The flip side of that is that there was talk in the thread you mentioned last night of it ruining him long term, which is an example the purging Rush is referencing.

He did fail my expectations, incidentally. And it did influence my view of his viability for a candidacy, so in that way, Rush was talking to me, I suppose.

One question we need to ask is “Don’t we want Conservatism to win in 2012?”

Given that we need to have a ticket which has a proven track record of accomplishments (deficit reduction, tax cutting strategies, etc) which can stand on its own merit against the seating president’s record of 4 years. If we have to pardon some foibles now and maybe in future, so be it.

We can pray for a Ronaldus Maximus (as Rush would put it) but he was one and only.

OneConservative on February 25, 2009 at 6:42 PM

Hundreds, if not thousands of mediocre, elected liberal democrats populate all levels of our government. I don’t know one who is special. Put together, they’re an army of scum.

We need our own army. Stop looking for the golden boy/girl.

Jindal and Palin can help greatly, as long as they’re not alone, or expected to be the great conservative hope.

JiangxiDad on February 25, 2009 at 6:42 PM

Don’t get your panties in a bunch–if you listen to ALL of Rush, you know the context of that comment was rooted in the nonsense coming from msm pundits. His main target was David Brooks. Rush is fed up with whiny, hand ringing conservatives who worry we don’t have anyone to “compare” with Obama. Frankly, I think not having anyone like Obama is a HUGE plus!

Conservatives & Republicans eating their own is flat out stupid beyond comprehension. Bobby Jindal is a rising star in the GOP, and therefore will be attacked with a vengeance by the Liberal media and their bed partners in the Democrat Party. Constructive criticism is fine, but must be tempered as not to feed the enemy talking points. Sarah Palin is a rising star also, and was viciously attacked (including her family members) by the opposition because they realize how attractive her Conservative values are to millions of Americans.

Republicans lost the trust of the people due to a total failure to uphold strict Conservative principle’s. Republicans got caught up in corruption, sex scandals, pet pork projects, earmarks, and spending on social welfare programs that have always been the mode of operation of Democrats.

Democrats-Liberals fear Conservative’s more than anything, as Conservative values dominate the way most of Americans live their lives. This country remains a center right country. The problem is that the GOP turned into another version of the Democrat Party.

Keemo on February 25, 2009 at 6:44 PM

So, AP and Levy’s hand wringing is over the fact that people are saying that maybe, just maybe Jindal’s speech wasn’t the worstest speech eva!!!eleventy!1111??

Amen Cindy. Some days reading the posts I just want to try to find out where MediaHack or one of the other liberal commenters here drink and offer to go buy them a beer for beating our asses so soundly.

I think this thread makes Rush’s point. In 24 hours time one man gives a speech filled both with lies and promises that can’t be kept but he delivers it with style and he’s good. Someone to fear. Almost … admire?

In the same 24 hours an honest man steps forward for the first time in front of a national audience and tries to define the Conservative position and tell the American People that we can prosper again of our own accord without the government interfering. And he’s able to say his piece without exaggeration or empty promises. He reminds us of our greatness but we’re disappointed with his style so his message is bad. Some decide he has no chance to lead us after one speech. Forget the great Hannity interview or the awesome work he’s doing in his state.

What are the rules for throwing in the towel? Can anyone do it for the group? It’s really starting to sound like we need put out of our misery.

hawkdriver on February 25, 2009 at 6:44 PM

Somebody told Gov. Bobby Jindal to act like he was talking to first graders last night. That can get fixed, but our side is ripping him! If we’re going to start throwing genuine conservatives overboard for specious reasons, we deserve to get our butts beat.” (Rush 24/7 Members: Listen)

Conservatives were not just looking for someone to articulate their positions. They were looking for an antidote to the Obama magic.

Obama made his grand entrance looking like Tiger walking onto the 18th green of the Masters. His head smoothly bobbed back and forth from TelePrompTer to TelePrompTer effortless concealing the fact that he was reading, and he gracefully accepted the adoration of the Congress like Nero before the Roman Senate.

Then Jindal stumbles in to his empty set with his goofy nerd-like face and bad haircut. He looks straight ahead and it is painfully obvious that he is nervous and that he is reading. The echo of his empty set is a painful reminder that everyone was still in the after glow of Obama and no one was listening to him. He is a nice guy and his words were fine, but he was pathetic as the Obama antidote that we were looking for. If he were to run in ’12, it would be like a Republican Dukakis.

We need a rockstar, preferably a minority capable of lying out of both sides of his or her mouth and accomplished in populist demagoguery.

Forget what Obama’s poll ratings are in February 2009. Forget about “Big Picture” questions of grand strategy. What counts is what the generic ballot question shows on Labor Day 2010. Republicans need to raise money, organize and identify at least 50 seats currently held by Democrats that the GOP can win in 2010. Do that basic stuff, and the “Big Picture” will take care of itself.

Bet against Obamanomics, do the basic work of organizing for 2010, forget all the distracting chatter and — above all else — quit the hang-wringing and whining. A great opportunity beckons, if only Republicans will buckle down and focus on the task at hand.

Sound advice from The Other McCain blog.

LOL since you can’t do it either I suppose I’ll teach the young
Conservative: One who lives within their means, sticks with their spouse for life, to the best of their ability doesn’t lie, cheat, steal or any number of other things that can harm others, wants limited government
Liberal:
tends to let definitions of morality be situational rather than more absolute, see charity as a group activity, cede moral teaching to others,

Those are a few examples. the problem with right and left wing die hards is the words intolerant and absolutist are part of their definition — if a person doesn’t believe 100% of what they do they are not a “true” conservative or liberal.

Jindal was not at his best last night. His content was good, but his presentation not as much. That is the field as it was striped last night.

Jindal on the Today program was much more on target in terms of style, yet kept his content intact. Much better and worthy of more opportunities down the line by the Steele Machine aka the new RNC. I certainly don’t write Gov. Jindal off any more than I would write off Gov. Palin. Both have bright futures in national politics and I dream of both of them being future great presidents.

As for Rush, I like him personally, but dismiss his comments on the matter out of hand. We’ll have to agree to disagree on that.

Agree, but back in John Adams’ time most voters based their decision on the written word. Very few if any ever had a chance to meet John Adams or see him speak.

Today, being able to communicate via a mass-medium like TV is crucial. That’s why Jindal’s performance was disappointing (and it is allowed to say so), but not disqualifying in any way for a future run for the presidency.

Jindal was fine, he communicated what the party’s principles should be moving forward. So he didn’t do it in front of the Barackopolis or with trumpet fanfare in front of a massive crowd hypnotized by his glistening pecs. He told it as it is, and that is what I want from an executive, not the high soaring rhetoric that isn’t worth a damn two seconds upon leaving his mouth.

You guys are being far too hard on him, he’s not Obama, he isn’t going to have the cadence and hypnotic effect on college girls that the Messiah displayed on the campaign trail, but he does know what he’s doing, understands how the economy works and has done more as an executive than anyone on the ticket last year.

Rush was just making a point that we don’t want flowery language, we want concrete ideas articulated to the masses.

Jindal is our guy.

Levy and I are going to start a secular, hawkish, (mostly) libertarian third party.

Are the atheists and junkies gonna enlist to fight those wars you are planning or do you expect to use non-party members to satisfy the party’s hawkish urges?

Buddahpundit on February 25, 2009 at 6:59 PM

Alright, Bradky, here goes –

Liberals are generally people who believe that they feel more than others. They believe they have a higher I.Q. than others and that any plans that they visualize should be accepted and implementated regardless of the cost or whether it will actually help anybody or not. They generally believe that it is more important that people perceive you as generous and charitible even if you’re not.
They are willing to throw tons of money at a problem as long as it’s not theirs. A great number of them seem to belive that other countries are more desirable to live in than America. But, for whatever reason, they stay here.

Conservatives are people who roll up their sleeves and tackle their own problems. They generally want government to take a backseat in their lifes. They love their country, and support oour Armed Forces but question our politicians when they take too much of their hard-earned money to invest in pork projects designed to further their careers. They give to their churches and their charities, but do it from the heart and not to get recognition. They take care of friends and family and feel blessed to be an American.

That’s my opinion. I’d be interested in yours.

kingsjester on February 25, 2009 at 7:00 PM

Conservatives were not just looking for someone to articulate their positions. They were looking for an antidote to the Obama magic.

tommylotto on February 25, 2009 at 6:48 PM

We could have a republican clone of Obama and he wouldn’t make past the first week of the primaries.
I don’t really see anything that special in Obama. It wasn’t his charisma or electrifying communication skills that put him where he is. It simply was a 24/7 MSM propaganda machine, all the money in the world and a good dose of ACORN.

mauipundit on February 25, 2009 at 7:00 PM

Those are a few examples. the problem with right and left wing die hards is the words intolerant and absolutist are part of their definition — if a person doesn’t believe 100% of what they do they are not a “true” conservative or liberal.

Bradky on February 25, 2009 at 6:50 PM

Geez, Bradly this line of argument has been done to death and is borderline childish. Sorry if you are not 100% liberal or conservative you can be green/communist/libertarian/constitutional etc…etc..

How do you think those other parties came to exist. Sorry but because you want legalize weed or something you do not get to redefine club membership rules to suit you. Just find somewhere else. It is no different than the cafeteria christians. Don’t sweat the small stuff and move on.

ClassicCon on February 25, 2009 at 7:00 PM

Rush talks for 15 hours a week. Occasionally he’s going to slip & say something stupid. Like a couple of weeks ago when he insulted everyone who hadn’t gotten the digital TV converter yet.

Jindal was neither horrible nor amazing. I do have to say though, that I was not expecting so many people to put such high hopes on him that it’s become so disappointing to them.

And that Limbaugh quote….goodness. Relaaaax.

Come on, conservatives. Just chill. =)

mauipundit on February 25, 2009 at 7:02 PM

Jindal is adept at using a communication style typical of high-context cultures such as India. It’s quite opaque to those immersed in low-context cultures such as the U.S., particularly to individuals unskilled at intercultural communication. If people want to listen only to style and sound bites, that’s their choice. I think you will be pleasantly surprised, however, if you listen more deeply and focus on the substance of what this man has to communicate.

Just your name turns me off. Who gives a crap about you. Rush rules and he is right. We don’t pray and let Allah rule. Sound muslim? Dummies. Does Michelle know you?

I just watched the HBO ‘John Adams’ series this weekend. If there was anyone who was going to lose the popularity contest, it was Adams. And guess what? He became the President of the United States.

Peri Winkle on February 25, 2009 at 6:52 PM

No TV or radio back then. Reagan knew how to get his substance across on TV. Whoever goes against Obama in 2012 needs to be able to compete with media skills. Jindal is young. He’ll be back, but may be more than 3 years away from being a national contender.

dedalus on February 25, 2009 at 7:03 PM

Ap is dead on here, the fact is Jindal had a genuine oppertunity to introduce himself and his core conservative values to the wider American public and he blew it. He laid an egg.

He had a good show today. I wasn’t big into the Female Summit, though.

Don’t know whether that’s true or false, but that isn’t how he won in Louisiana.

notropis on February 25, 2009 at 7:04 PM

Soo the presentation was wooden…big deal. I’ve seen him speak in person, and the man we saw last night is nothing like the man Jindal really is.

Jindal had things going against him. Number one, he followed Teh One…and more than half the nation (the polled one’s anyway) still love Teh One.

Two, the speech writer who wrote that, if it was Bobby’s man/woman, needs a serious talking to. The speech was sucky and too perky..not substance, really.

Three…the setting really sucked. I’d have had him sitting in the Governors office, with the stars and stripes on one side, the state flag on the other and the state seal on the wall in the middle…make it official and imposing looking. In front of the stairs he looked too young. Staging is so important, especially in this “American Idol” age of all show and no substance.

Jindal has the substance, his career proves this, he just needed a little more show…especially when following Teh One.

If the GOP can’t get the fact that the average citizen likes style and it’s not provided, then I don’t care how good your message is….

I think that Jindal, in spite of the exorcism and the ID albatross, has very great potential. He just needs to be handled properly.

BO’s team did a wonderful job, and it got this Marxist elected to the most powerful position on the planet. If the GOP (especially conservatives) want the WHite House back on 2012, then they’d better start putting on a better show!

Pulchritudinous Patriot on February 25, 2009 at 7:05 PM

I have only one thing to say….Sarah Palin should have given the response last night. That’s your next President, unless the Repubs are as scared of her as BO is? Personally, I think they are.

Okay that was two things…

shomegirl on February 25, 2009 at 7:06 PM

“Folks who rail against (him) because they fear him…” And, they fear him because they can’t relate to an average guy (with a big mouth) who got rich on connecting with the American people.
I don’t listen to him but when I hear/read a clip, I agree with him when he talks about ‘the issues’.
I’m not a Rush fan, but I defend his free speech rights as I would defend my own.

benny shakar on February 25, 2009 at 7:08 PM

I think Rush was making another point. When I heard him say this earlier I saw it in the context that he doesn’t want us imploding, he wants us to get our act together. On the other hand, some think we already have and are trying to get rid of the stink.

There seems to be so many different things going on here at the same time. For example arguing about whether or not our next pres candidate we choose needs to be a good talker or should have good ideas or both.

Personally I don’t think need the best speaker. The problem we have are ideas and letting them be known. When someone is coming at you with fire you don’t bring charcoal to help the other person with the BBQ. What kind of fight is that? We need to bring water, flame retardant and anything else we can to turn whatever it is they have to fight us with against them! It seems as though a lot of our elected officials can’t seem to get that through their heads, and until they do I look for the worst.

Still, with the ground swells that are going on there may be another chance coming…

Go ahead and criticize. It doesn’t affect his impact. I personally know people who were ‘independents’ who became and now self-identify as ‘conservatives’ from listening to Rush. He’s not everybody’s favorite son, but he has an impact on the national conversation, to be sure.

Spirit of 1776 on February 25, 2009 at 7:09 PM

terryannonline on February 25, 2009 at 7:09 PM

Whether I believe in God or not, my vote carries just as much weight as the next person’s. Let’s worry about bringing back fiscal responsibility before we continue harping on about religion’s place in the GOP.

On Jindal – I can’t say that he hit one out of the ball park or struck out. I’m a little “meh” when it comes to him, but maybe with better exposure that might change. I have to admit, I do wish he’d get a better haircut. It’s shallow, but it does have an effect on people’s perceptions.

Anna on February 25, 2009 at 7:09 PM

Ummmmm……….

Note to Michael Steele:

“…. — he should have adapted by changing it and doing the speech in front of a small audience (or a big one).”

You go from Mr. Teleprompter, surrounded by lackeys, giving him a standing ovation for clearing his throat, adding the collective orgasm the MSM gave him before, but especially after his speech………..

…………… then cut to Bobby J., walking out of the dark in an old Louisiana mansion, probably haunted,( oooohhh scary), and some Democratic plant told him to speak like he was talking to children.

Same mistake the RNC made with Gov. Palin, let them be themselves, in a venue of their choosing…….

Seven Percent Solution on February 25, 2009 at 7:09 PM

Rush is making a very important point. This is NOT freakin American Idol!
This is our country and if you dont get that then I guess you just dont get IT.
HoosierCon on February 25, 2009 at 6:39 PM

Think back to previous presidential elections. Now tell us when the more charismatic, more personally likeable candidate lost. When was the last time the candidate that most people would rather share a 6-pack with lose?

What ’08 reminded us of (again) is that charisma and likeability matter more than policy, political philosophy or experience.

Hollowpoint on February 25, 2009 at 7:09 PM

I agree with Rush. Bobby Jindal is important to Republicans. We are lucky to have him – HotAir is totally wrong to think that his style disqualified him. The Messiah lies out of both sides of his mouth at once – and has the Revival Style of Rev. Wright – people want honesty. They want someone, poor style or not, that they can trust. Rush is 100% correct.

No one’s talking about “purging” Jindal, let alone for one bad speech. It’s a simple matter of expectations having been high and then being dashed. He’ll need to do better next time.

Allahpundit on February 25, 2009 at 6:36 PM

Kinda like how Palin is being given a second chance by all of her detractors here. By you?

No, you’ll pounce on him next time he makes a mistake with the same relish that you plug the opinions of Ross Douthat, Heather Macdonald and every other nominal conservative with a beef against anyone that stinks of religion.

Thus, your exit quotation.
