Obama moving away from fear-based politics?

posted at 8:00 am on February 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Last night, I followed Barack Obama’s non-SOTU SOTU speech in three ways: watching it, reading the release of the text, and checking the instant reaction on Twitter.  I did the same with Bobby Jindal’s response.  Frankly, I’m a bit surprised at the response to both, and think for the most part they missed the key points.

First, SOTU speeches usually are nothing more than legislative wish lists.  Presidents tell Congress what they want, and Congress applauds when they agree.  If you like Barack Obama’s populist wish list, you probably liked the speech, and if not, you probably hated it.  But it’s no different than hearing one of his campaign speeches in that regard — and no different than any other president’s SOTU speech.  Given that Obama won a national election using essentially the agenda he had last night, I’d say he did himself a lot of good, and will get a temporary bump in the polling from it.

So instead of focusing on the I-want aspects of the speech, it’s better to look at the other messages — and one in particular struck me from both reading the text and watching the delivery.  It seems that Obama has discovered that fear and dread don’t help markets.  He took some edge off the populist screech last night and sent a calming message to the banking system:

I want to speak plainly and candidly about this issue tonight, because every American should know that it directly affects you and your family’s well-being.  You should also know that the money you’ve deposited in banks across the country is safe; your insurance is secure; and you can rely on the continued operation of our financial system.  That is not the source of concern.

The concern is that if we do not re-start lending in this country, our recovery will be choked off before it even begins.

You see, the flow of credit is the lifeblood of our economy. The ability to get a loan is how you finance the purchase of everything from a home to a car to a college education; how stores stock their shelves, farms buy equipment, and businesses make payroll.

But credit has stopped flowing the way it should. Too many bad loans from the housing crisis have made their way onto the books of too many banks. With so much debt and so little confidence, these banks are now fearful of lending out any more money to households, to businesses, or to each other. When there is no lending, families can’t afford to buy homes or cars.  So businesses are forced to make layoffs. Our economy suffers even more, and credit dries up even further.

That is why this administration is moving swiftly and aggressively to break this destructive cycle, restore confidence, and re-start lending.

This got followed by a parade of we-don’t-like-bankers populist boilerplate, but Obama overall stressed time and again that the system itself will not fail.  Until now, Obama pushed for legislation on the explicitly-expressed fear of total collapse (and for that matter, so did George Bush).  The markets have reacted as any rational person would expect: capital has fled and values tanked.  Obama finally seems to have realized this and has begun looking to change the tone of his rhetoric to make a sunnier appeal and to start building confidence instead of scaring the hell out of people.  He’s back to Hope rather than Despair.

Duane Patterson pointed out on Twitter another interesting point about this speech, an omission that seems surprising given the wish-list opportunity Obama had last night.  In the entire speech, Obama made not one mention of the Card Check legislation pending in Congress.  He never mentioned unions at all, and only mentioned workers in relation to the necessity of restarting credit and getting jobs created.  And for that matter, Obama also failed to mention the Freedom of Choice Act, which would federalize abortion and strip away all state restrictions and the Hyde Amendment that prevents federal subsidies for abortions.  Obama promised constituencies that these would be two of his top priorities once elected, but in his first opportunity to lay out his legislative agenda, they were nowhere to be found.

If SOTU speeches are essentially campaign speeches, then responses are infomercials even at the best of times.  Since the responders never have an opportunity to craft a specific response to points within the SOTU speech, the speaker has to find ways to lay out the opposition party’s general principles and approach.  I thought Bobby Jindal did a good job doing just that.  The delivery of a speech to nothing but a camera crew, after the grand spectacle of a SOTU speech interrupted every thirty seconds with standing ovations, will always be a letdown, but overall, I disagree with the Fox crew and others that Jindal was “awful”.

Jindal laid out what will be the way back for the GOP — positive alternatives to massive government growth by relying on the strength of the American people.  He gave what I think will be a key line for Republicans in the next two years (emphasis mine):

Democratic leaders say their legislation will grow the economy. What it will do is grow the government, increase our taxes down the line and saddle future generations with debt.

Who among us would ask our children for a loan, so we could spend money we do not have, on things we do not need? That is precisely what the Democrats in Congress just did. It’s irresponsible. And it’s no way to strengthen our economy, create jobs or build a prosperous future for our children.

In Louisiana, we took a different approach. Since I became governor, we cut more than 250 earmarks from our state budget. And to create jobs for our citizens, we cut taxes six times — including the largest income tax cut in the history of our state.

We passed those tax cuts with bipartisan majorities.  Republicans and Democrats put aside their differences, and worked together to make sure our people could keep more of what they earn. If it can be done in Baton Rouge, surely it can be done in Washington, DC.

We’re never going to beat Obama on style points; he’s just too good of a speaker.  Republicans need to beat him on ideas, and Jindal did about as well as anyone could in doing so.

And yes, when Obama said this, I did laugh:

And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it.

Wow — I hope Germany never does, either!  Did we suddenly become the Soviets, taking credit for everyone else’s inventions?  Doesn’t anyone fact-check Obama’s speeches before making them?  I doubt many people will remember this speech for that, or for anything else, either, but it’s a particularly sloppy mistake.

It’s clear that Obama is in the pocket of Big Volcano Monitoring. Its good that Jindal was willing to speak truth to power.

Who among us would ask our children for a loan, so we could spend money we do not have, on things we do not need?

Honestly, my husband’s ex-wife has no compunction about that type of thing. I’m sure there are plenty of others, too.

BigD on February 25, 2009 at 8:10 AM

You know he meant the mass produced automobile but hey, you have to guess that he either knows what he’s talking about or guess what he REALLY meant by that sentence or phrase.

I personally couldn’t stand to listen to another dreadful speech by the “great orator”.

Conservatives that chose to sit home or hold their noses to vote McCain all know the poison this guy puts out there so it was a do over as far as their concerned. Empty rhetoric is the norm for this usurper. On that note a second military person in Iraq has filed suit for verification of the qualifications for this pretender. Should be interesting.

We’re never going to beat Obama on style points; he’s just too good of a speaker.

Sorry, Ed, but I completely disagree!
He stuttered and stumbled (as usual), even with a teleprompter.
Not only that, but I can’t stand the way he raises his voice (for emphasis?)
at the end of his sentences like a shout/question (Ex: “…punished by a BABY?!_)
All the pundits keep saying he’s a great speaker, but it’s a truism that isn’t true.

I disagree with the Fox crew and others that Jindal was “awful”.

Finally someone else who understands it is about the message.

theguardianii on February 25, 2009 at 8:11 AM

And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it.

History is not his strong point.

He should actually stick to his strong points that are based in reality, those being… hm-m-m, ah-h-h-h, well… those would be… h-m-m-m-m…

Forget it. We will now return to regular programming spending.

I was very disappointed with the Fox panel saying that Jindal was “awful.” If attention was paid to his words rather than his delivery, it was an excellent, inspiring speech.

CarolynM on February 25, 2009 at 8:12 AM

I always thought people were being overblown about Obama using politics of fear, is that what it is when you read a list of economic statistics anyone with an internet connection can find. Nonetheless, this slight shift in tone may leave the right wing talk radio with even less to complain about. And with less legit to complain about they can further their sink into outlandish radical opposition, which will fire some folks up, but won’t help the GOP. Obama seems to be quite the master of neutralizing opposition without actually moving his positions closer…gotta love the effeciency.

DeathToMediaHacks on February 25, 2009 at 8:13 AM

From fear based to the moronic and intimidation based!
Let me see,,,, he criticized the banks for having bad too much bad debt and making loans they never should have,,, then said the economy will be rescued because he will FORCE the banks to give us all more loans!
Obama is gonna give us all new loans!! Yippee! My troubles are over!!
He’s also going to cut the deficit by socializing medicine and mandating government service for every American!!
We’re all comrades now!!
Oh,, can’t forget that new AG that’s going to roam America to intimidate mayors who aren’t spending properly!! Forget states rights!! No,, he’s going right for small town America!!

JellyToast on February 25, 2009 at 8:13 AM

Regarding FOCA and Card Check; I don’t think BO is stepping away from fear mongering as much as he is learning not to show his hand (agenda) by not discussing it.

By mentioning those two items, he would have indeed acknowledged and given the wink & nod to his lefty supporters, but made others more aware of some legislation that strikes against the vein of morality, good sense, and “fairness”.

AZ_Redneck on February 25, 2009 at 8:13 AM

Hey,, but the checks are in the mail!!!

JellyToast on February 25, 2009 at 8:13 AM

Obama has moved away from fear-based politics because he’s gotten the stimulus approved, and he doesn’t have to demonize Republicans for the time being. He’ll play the fear card again if things start to go wrong, and people start having doubts.

It’s similar with Card Check and the FoC act – these are policies that were promoted to his lefty supporters so he could get elected, and which will now be slipped through quietly, or watered down if the going gets rough.

Obviously not or Obama might not have thought America had 57 states.

doriangrey on February 25, 2009 at 8:15 AM

Elected officials, by definition, cannot speak “truth to power”. They are power.

As for the “inventing the automobile” comment… eh. Nitpicky. It’s American mythology (or a product of our lousy educational system, take your pick) that Ford invented the automobile; certainly he invented the automobile *industry* as we know it.

It’s hardly surprising that he wouldn’t mention Card Check or abortion. The vast majority of people flat out don’t care about them at this point.

He’ll probably slide those into law while the rest of the country isn’t looking – or better still, introduce them while something actually important, like the budget, is going on so that the Rush Limbaugh listeners are completely distracted from the genuinely important issues. After all, Obama got three days of the media cycle all to himself just by letting an advisor hint that maybe the Fairness Doctrine was coming back. He didn’t have to actually *do* anything at all.

Has it actually dawned on people yet that Obama may well be as good a communicator as Reagan? And that this spells a passel of trouble for the Republicans? Jindal isn’t going to cut it, and Palin is going to need new on her resume to recover from her media filleting and deboning.

I was surprised to see this from the AP.

Brat4life on February 25, 2009 at 8:18 AM

What I still want to know is where this $1.3 Trillion he is claiming he is going to cut in half is coming from? Lets cover a few facts the media has failed to talk about.

We do NOT have a Federal Budget right now and I believe this is going to be the first year in our governments history that the whole year was funded by “spending bills” like the $410 Billion pork filled one they just passed.

Now because we don’t have a budget, spending was frozen at 2007 levels and at that time we had a $160 Billion deficit:
The Budget and Economic Outlook: Fiscal Years 2009 to 2019

2008 deficit was $455 Billion, but $300 Billion of that was the one time tax rebate, so the real budget deficit was $155 Billion. You can look at the CBO charts there and see that nothing is “inherited” because with the TARP and $900 Billion bill he just signed they are looking at a $1.2 Trillion deficit, but the Pork Spending Feast Bill and TARP are one time payments.

What I want someone to tell me is where this $1.3 Trillion budget deficit they are going to cut in 1/2 by 2012 is coming from?

Finally he stated many times before Congress last night, with Queen Pelosi and Sen. Reid behind him that THEY INHERITED this mess, but Queen Pelosi and Sen. Reid have been in charge since 2006 and are the people who write the budget. They did not inherit anything, they created it.

Obama’s speech was a fairy tale.
He promises everything, including no tax increase for 95% of the people and lowering the deficit. He promises to not pass the debt to our children.

But he just pushed through the gigantic stimulus bill. And he is pushing for more debt.

Our president is a con man. He is actually a better con man than Bernie Madoff, but the result will be the same.

4thQTR on February 25, 2009 at 8:20 AM

The polls all say he did a fab job. I always wonder whom did they poll on the east coast at ten pm? They said the same thing the next morning after Clinton’s speeches. Who did they poll at 11pm on the east coast? Why isn’t the media that reports this horseshit smart enough to ask the same question?

Redglen on February 25, 2009 at 8:20 AM

Well the focus group on last night had it half and half of who liked the one’s speech. They seemed to like Jindal’s a bit better than The one’s. This group was broken up half for The One. Those that voted for McCain.

Brat4life on February 25, 2009 at 8:23 AM

Ed, thank you. Too many people seemed to be expecting a Gettysburg Address from Jindal.

One question: Who’s president, and what did he say? Great, he stop saying crisis, so much. But he still had to use “inherited” at least twice.

The contrast between Obama and Jindal was stark. Obama and the Dems clearly believe in big government and their own brainpower. They don’t believe in America and Americans. Period.

Jindal believes in America and Americans. Period.

2. More than doubled deficit with trillion dollar pork bill, done with extreme sleaze.

3. Another 400 billion in pork a week later.

4. Says he’ll reduce the deficit by half by raisign taxes on employers.

5. Deficit will still be much bigger than when he took office (even if it works).

What I found striking about the focus group is that, on one hand, they viewed Obama generally (not wildly) favorably, but they viewed the stimulus bill strongly unfavorably.

When the negative attitudes towards the effects of Obama’s policies start catching up to him, then the middle of the country will start turning on him.

With the MSM fawning over their Messiah, our own side slamming Jindal and the total ignorance of well over half of America…

WE’RE F-’d!!!

With the comments here at HotAir by Ed, Allah the ilk, I could just puke… What a TOTAL SACK OF CRAP for Conservatives, Moderates, Centrists, Atheists, Christians, Republicans, RINO’s, hell for ANYONE to support The Messiah’s ideas and agenda for America over the ideas and principals that Jindal articulated is horrible… A testament to the stupidity of some, the desire to love and worship The Leader and his radical destruction of our history, of our present and our children’s future. HotAir and all associated should be ashamed to even talk of Obama in the same sentence as Jindal, Palin, and Rush, Sanford, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck and others… Obama is a clear and present DANGER, and for anyone not to see that makes them an idiot and fool…

Obama is a liar, he’s a radical far left Socialist, he hates a proud America, he’s not real fond of white people, the rich or any successful person or business. He lies with total freedom; he looks to suppress any descent by killing Talk Radio and our ability to put pressure on our Representatives. Our life of hard work and smart choices, good planning and living within our means is shown to be stupid. In his world view we should have been on welfare waiting for the gobmit cheese and checks. We should have relied on the gobmit to provide womb to tomb care and allowed our children to be indoctrinated at the local gobmit skool. (/sarc) His lies and the fact that most Americans believe this crap is a sign of our deepening dependence on gobmit, and not on personal responsibility.
Jindal was not horrible, his message IS correct. The Messiah and his cult of followers are not the answers to our future; they are not the answer to our needs… They are the very face of evil, of the destruction of the American way of life… The end of reward for work, the end of morals as a bases for decisions, the end of values for human life, security and a strong and proud Military. Jindal was right that personal responsibility and the hard working, do it alone American spirit is the answer, not gobmit. Our pundits and so called Conservative commentators are IDIOTS AND TRAITORS to our future and America to praise The Messiah against the moral standings of freedom and The Constitution that Jindal expresses. Are we now, at this moment, at this junction, at this crossroads, going to embrace the Jindal vision, the Conservative vision of America…? A proud, mighty, moral Country, with personal rights and freedoms, where hard work and effort are encouraged and rewarded… Or will we simply fold up our values, bow to The Messiah and fall in lock step with the cult of cradle to grave sameness… Where the morons and idiots that make poor choices, live lives of depravity, drugs, gangs, crime, welfare, abortion and moral decay are said to be the winners and the ones of value. The One and his followers have a strangle hold on the MSM, the Great Leader has spoken from on high, he will cure Cancer, calm the tides, make the Sun come out and make all the lazy, uninspired, deadbeats the new rulers of America.

Well friends, if that’s the kind of America you want, go for it… As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord; we will continue to live a moral, ethical life… We will support Conservatives; speak out against the far left and The Messiah’s radical agenda… We will not lose faith in a just and strong military, in our desire for personal freedoms, The Constitution and a proud America of work, success and reward.

For those of you that scoff at Jindal or Palin or heck, ANY Conservative, if you believe in The Messiah, if you want a gobmit handout, or welfare, or secured mortgage, or Socialized health care, I have a few words for you…

I so sick and tired of “our” side, so called Conservative pundits and blogs and posters and media bashing ANYTHING or ANYONE Conservative… Jindal, Palin, Sanford, and Rush, Mark Levin and many, many more… Jindal made GREAT points, delivered poorly… His thoughts, his positions and his message ARE CORRECT… The radical Messiah and his cult followers in the MSM and the Millions of idiots that believe his constant lies and want his womb to tomb gobmit cheese and welfare and abortions and weakened Military and appeasement of terrorists are the real and clear and present DANGER!!! NOT Jindal!!! What the hell is wrong with you people here at HotAir, WTF Ed and Allah!?! Have you bought into this crap sandwich Obama and his radical agenda for America??? Have you forgotten about hard work, personal responsibility, values, ethics, truth, The Constitution, our freedoms?!? Why would we bash or talk down about Jindal and the message of true hope and change for America? Why would we want to give The Messiah ANY credit for his cunning lies and distortions and subversion of America?
As Republicans, Conservatives, Moderates, Centrists we had better remember WHO THE ENEMY IS… Obama’s plans for America are leading to revolution… His plans to stomp our freedoms, our liberties, to reward lazy people that make bad decisions and don’t work or produce… Jindal, Palin and the others are NOT the enemy of America, Obama IS!!! For all of you posting statements that Jindal did a bad job, or this or that… I have some words for you:
You better learn who the enemy of America is…

(A hint) It’s NOT Palin or Jindal…

I don’t see Obama moving away from the fear mongering. He just put it on moratorium for now because he got the porkulus bill passed.

The moment he needs a few hundred billion more for the next bailout(mortgages being next on the plate), he’ll go back to spreading fear. The man’s a neverending campaigner. And as we all know, Democrats love to campaign on doom and gloom.

Hopefully someone can clear this up for me. When he was talking about renewable energy, he said we could make it affordable by passing a market cap or something like that on the coal industry. Did I hear that right? I’ve heard that you can feel thinner by hanging around fat people. Does this mean that Obama is going to make renewable energy sources cost efficient by making coal more expensive?

In case everyone missed it, Ed or Allah were nice enough to include in the Headlines yesterday a NYT article by a husband-and-wife team who rightfully called Obama on his grammar. Nitpicking? No, not when people are swooning over his speaking abilities. The mistakes I pick up from him always prompt me to think that he’s a tool who’s tool lazy to do some home and who’s consumed with trying to sound smarter than he really is.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/24/opinion/24oconner.html?_r=1

I’ve read two books by the wife, and I follow her blog (grammarphobia.com, great for high schoolers, parents). She’s not a grammar biatch. Just a very capable writer who merely makes a simple request of an educated person. The concluding paragraph:

But an educated speaker is expected to keep his pronouns in line. Here, then, is a tip, Mr. President. Nobody chooses the wrong pronoun when it’s standing on its own. If you’re tempted to say “for Michelle and I” in tonight’s speech, just mentally omit Michelle (sorry, Mrs. Obama), and you’ll get it right. And no one will get on your case.

“A testament to the stupidity of some, the desire to love and worship The Leader and his radical destruction of our history, of our present and our children’s future.

(/sarc) His lies and the fact that most Americans believe this crap is a sign of our deepening dependence on gobmit, and not on personal responsibility.”

This guy can throw rose pedals at the crowd forever but it wont change the fact that he is raping the treasury, weakening the country and speeding down the road to communism. His cultist “rats” will continue to succumb to his Pied Piper behavior but the strong, intelligent people in this country had better continue to mount a serious offensive against the rise of his national socialism agenda, lest we hoist the hammer and sickle.

rplat on February 25, 2009 at 8:43 AM

Yes! Must admit it’s true. NOTHING, positively NOTHING o says, does or is will ever make me like him. Now, why is that? Largely it’s his policies and ideological bent, but there’s more than that. He’s TOO smooth, TOO underhanded, says one thing and does another and(this is the main problem)I never think I’m seeing the real Obama. No matter what he says or how he says it,I always find myself thinking he’s not sincere inside where it counts. The real person(whomever that is)never comes through–just this cardboard cut out, trimmed and painted to be what he thinks the public wants.

Hey Mark: an observation. My guess is that few here are bothering to read your massive thesis. A few sentences, to a few paragraphs, that are pointed would probably serve you better.

Yoop on February 25, 2009 at 8:44 AM

The Obama is a magician, and illusionist. He has the speaking voice of a great orator. He has learned the tempo and cadence of a motivational speaker, and he has learned the power words that speak to the heart. But his speeches are hollow.

The more The Obama speaks, increasing numbers of people see through the illusion, and his speeches begin to irritate rather than inspire. The mob begins to think, ‘we have heard all of this before, where are the results?’

When mummers begin, when the doubters ask when will these great miracles appear, how do we get there, when The Obama’s tricks wear thin and he begins to lose his audience, and power begins to slip through his fingers, what will he do then?

Skandia Recluse on February 25, 2009 at 8:45 AM

Hopefully someone can clear this up for me. When he was talking about renewable energy, he said we could make it affordable by passing a market cap or something like that on the coal industry. Did I hear that right? I’ve heard that you can feel thinner by hanging around fat people. Does this mean that Obama is going to make renewable energy sources cost efficient by making coal more expensive?

Kafir on February 25, 2009 at 8:41 AM

I definitely heard him mention caps on carbon emissions. Cap-and-trade would be a disaster for our economy. I’m frankly amazed that hasn’t gotten more reaction from anyone. I was scared sh-tless when I heard him bring that up.

Yes, I’m aware he and most of the Dems(and a few RINOs unfortunately) are in favor of such nonsense, but I’d really hoped that had been placed on the backburner given the more important issues on our plate. Not to mention the fact the earth is cooling, not warming, and we just found out the amount of ice in the Arctic was severely understimated due to faulty satellite equipment.

Moaneeca on February 25, 2009 at 8:20 AM

It’s all poll driven rhetoric. Say something…check the polls. Say something else…check the polls.

In one speech the economy will take years to recover then Bernanke says it will recover this year. When the next stimulus bill comes up for a vote, it will be “repent and be saved for the end is near” again. He’s just hearding cats.

RadioFreeUSA on February 25, 2009 at 8:48 AM

It seems that Obama has discovered that fear and dread don’t help markets. He took some edge off the populist screech last night and sent a calming message to the banking system:

Ed,

Last night was “essentially campaign speech” that Obama filled with cautious optimism. We can expect the “fear and dread” to raise its ugly head the next time he attempts to push any agenda or bill that shows failing public support, (just as his stimulus/porkfest that was tanking in the polls until he hit the campaign trail and his adoring/placating media spread the propaganda of desperation and fear if we did not support HIS WAY!)

We can certainly look forward to more of the same when ever “his way” is challenged.

Rovin on February 25, 2009 at 8:48 AM

The Fox “All Star” Panel is a joke. Anyway whereis Bill Kristol? He is the only one worth listening to.
Jindal did a good job. His points were clear and excellent. The beginning was a bit rough, but the middle and end were absolutely good. We all know Jindal is a good speaker. I’ve seen his NRA speech and Inauguration speech. I just think he was nervous about the expectation of it all.
Obama can curse throught his speech and Fox All Stars would have called the speech magnificent. Nina Easton is Obama’s lapdog.
I really thought Obama’s speech was dull, insincere, arrogant and socialistic. I also thought he was extremely rude to his VP Biden with his “shoutout.”

Mark Garnett on February 25, 2009 at 8:50 AM

I doubt many people will remember this speech for that, or for anything else, either, but it’s a particularly sloppy mistake.

I could give him a pass on that, “we” did invent the automobile industry.

However, I have a problem with “we” part -”the nation invented…”. The country didn’t invent anything, it was individuals from this country, Barry. It’s the people of the country that make things, build things, invent things, it’s not the government.

I also won’t give him a pass on these kinds of mistakes, because everyone else will.

Plus, of course, if Palin or Bush said it, there would be cartoons all over, skits on crappy TV shows, and late-night jokes by the dozen.

Snake307 on February 25, 2009 at 8:32 AM

They won’t, and by then it will be too late. And they will never admit that it’s a mistake.

“Second half” goes like this:

In a society where individual liberty reigns supreme, you’ve the right to be lazy, but life will kick you in the ass.

But in a Socialist regime, it’s just the opposite.

Though Socialism rises to power by rewarding the lazy, once the dream becomes reality and all forms of resistance are crushed, the epiphany comes; the system does not generate productivity, a condition they will not admit under any circumstances, and the lazy are suddenly awoken to a new reality:

In a Socialist society, you’ve no right to be lazy, this hurts the system, therefore labor will be forced.

Welcome to the elitists answer to emancipation.

“I definitely heard him mention caps on carbon emissions. Cap-and-trade would be a disaster for our economy. I’m frankly amazed that hasn’t gotten more reaction from anyone. I was scared sh-tless when I heard him bring that up.”

The left’s agenda for America is only using the green theme because it suits them to do so. Whether or not the country can afford it is irrelevant, they will use it anyway in effort to reshape Amerika better to their liking.

I thought Obama was so sophisticated and smart. Why would you call out an ally like that?

Did someone from the ROK insult Cankles on her trip? He’s worried about them making hydrogen batteries? Don’t worry Barry, we won’t be needing too many, unless Uncle Sam forces us to buy them.

Who among us would ask our children for a loan, so we could spend money we do not have, on things we do not need? That is precisely what the Democrats in Congress just did. It’s irresponsible. And it’s no way to strengthen our economy, create jobs or build a prosperous future for our children.

Bingo. I couldn’t watch as he stood there with Nancy Pelosi gloating over her massive spending bill while he told us about fixing the deficit. WTF? It’s like saying, there, Congress has just gouged your eyeballs out to pay for all their little special interests and it’s going to cost us trillions by the time it’s over with, if, in fact, it’s ever over, and he has the nerve to talk to us about fixing a deficit? I couldn’t watch any more. The whole lot of them make me ill.

scalleywag on February 25, 2009 at 9:03 AM

1> The magic of Obama’s delivery is wearing off. He stands tall & has good posture; he’s young enough to appear fresh, especially following several years of GW Bush. The world was fascinated by Bill Clinton for many of the same reasons. The day came when the world realized Clinton was just another bullshit artist with a radical left-wing agenda, and a huge need for attention. Clinton’s magic wore off by his actions; same will apply to Obama, only much quicker.

2> Obama steered clear of the “union” topic, following very effective ads including a very power ad by Senator McGovern pointing out the facts about this power move against personal freedom.

3> I’m very surprised & disappointed to see the Fox people so hung-up on the style-delivery of Bobby Jindal. Jindal came off (to me) as very sincere, and his points were right on target with my own personal ideology. The old plan of attack; attack the messenger and you kill the message. Obama = just words if you compare his words to his actions. Jindal = words that match-up with his actions. One is a bullshitter, the other is a doer. To think, some of our people are obviously hung-up on a man’s delivery rather than the substance of the message. Very disappointing indeed.

4> I was glad to see Obama shovel some positive vibes back at the American people following weeks of doom & gloom. The markets have responded to Obama is a much clearer way than the rest of America. The markets see things from a different perspective than civilians. The markets tell us much if we have an open mind and are willing to search for the truth behind actions rather than bow to the bullshit.

That’s all he knows how to do. He’s never had any sort of leadership position in his life. The dude is basically gambling that everything he and the Dems in Congress are doing will either work or at the very least not make things worse. And history ain’t exactly in their favor.

I don’t care how great he is with a teleprompter. If he’s Carter 2.0, he’s toast in 2012. Soaring rhetoric don’t mean a damn thing with stagflation and high unemployment plaguing the nation.

Doughboy on February 25, 2009 at 9:14 AM

The Washington Post makes an interesting (and honest) observation this morning:

Obama Outlines Road to Economic Recovery, Stressing Education, Energy and Health Care

The “day of reckoning has arrived,” he declared, warning members of both parties in Congress that they will be forced to sacrifice “worthy priorities” as the crisis continues.

But he made it clear that he is not prepared to retreat from his own ambitious agenda. The president called on Congress to pass a market-based cap on carbon pollution. He vowed a renewed effort to provide health care to all Americans. And he called on Americans to attend at least one year of college or vocational training, pledging that by 2020, the country will again lead the world in the proportion of college graduates.

While Obama stresses SACRIFICE, none of these “ambitious” programs provide immediate or sustainable job creation and will certainly add to the already burdening deficit—which he plans on cutting in half by the end of his first, (and hopefully), only term. I have but four words for Obama, our congress, and this nation. STOP THE SPENDING MADNESS!

Rovin on February 25, 2009 at 9:14 AM

That address to a joint session of Congress was a campaign speech, and I don’t think that is usual.

A SOTU is a laundry list and then the president travels around the country campaigning for it.

Last night Obama was undignified and he brought the presidency back down to the level it was in the SOTU following impeachment. He was giving “shout outs” not recognition. He was trying to whip up his fans so that maybe one of them would pass out and he could toss them a bottle of water.

It was a waste of time. If the change in tone helps my portfolio in the short run, super, but his policies are going to destroy it in the long run.

Card Check and the Freedom of Choice Act won’t get mentioned, because the facts don’t work in favor of the Democrats. The more regular folks know about those bills, the less they’d support them.

I’m sure they hope to get both items thru both houses of Congress without any coverage.

hawksruleva on February 25, 2009 at 9:17 AM

When is Obama going to stop campaigning and get to work?

He has to keep campaigning to keep pushing his crap through.

On one hand, as arrogant as he is, I’m sure he wants to have high approval rating at all times, so I expect town halls and stump speeches every time they slip over the next 4 years.

He also needs the political capital to push his agenda through. Speech where he spouts populist nonsense, lies his arse off to tell people what they want to hear and promises to heal the sick + fawning media telling everyone how awesome he is = poll spike + increase in political capital.

Then he can run to congress and say “Look, I uh, uh, uh, won and I uh, uh, look, I have, uh, look a 60% approval, all debate is over.”
