Matthews: I said “Oh God” in exasperation at the “odd anti-bellum look” of Jindal’s set

posted at 2:32 pm on February 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via TV Newser, a sneak peek at what “Barack’s” biggest fan will offer tonight on Hardball to atone for the latest Olby/Matthews embarrassment:

I was taken aback by that peculiar stagecraft, the walking from somewhere in the back of this narrow hall, this winding staircase looming there, the odd anti-bellum look [sic] of the scene. Was this some mimicking of a president walking along the state floor to the East Room?

Evidently, narrow halls and winding staircases are distinctly ante-bellum. If I were a cynic, I might read this as yet another example of Matthews’s race-baiting, trying to connect Jindal to some sort of Confederate ethos opposite America’s first black president. Good thing I’m not a cynic, huh?

Judge for yourself. Here, again, is the “oh god” crack, and below it a reference he made to the GOP having “outsourced” the rebuttal to Jindal. A racist jibe at Jindal’s Indian heritage? Nah. I’m sure it’s innocent. But rest assured, had it come from someone else, the very first guy to find sinister intent in it would have been Chris Matthews.

“Anti-bellum”? Sorry, Chris, but you’re not allowed to use an excuse you can’t spell. Try again.

It’s ante-bellum.

WHY is it when libs say something it’s ” completely innocent…don’t make a big deal of it, sheesh” but when a Republican says something innocent the media plays a game of grievance twister and lights the pitchforks and starts boiling the tar?

Words, Crissy? Just words?

Nicely put.

Oh, it was just fine and dandy for Barack Obama to appear in front of a fake Greek temple at the DNC convention, or in front of a fake presidential seal before he was even the official Democrat nominee – but something is wrong with a sitting Governor appearing in an official looking setting?

And in a just world where liberals had to live up to the standards they impose on conservatives, Matthews would be fired for the “outsourcing” crack. That was several feet below the belt and MSDNC knows it. Lucky for them that conservatives have thick skins, unlike whiny liberals.

rockmom on February 25, 2009 at 2:37 PM

You wouldn’t want him to have a pro-bellum looking set, would you?

zmdavid on February 25, 2009 at 2:37 PM

I loved the speech…on paper. But I said as much when he came on…he shocked me by his slinking into the…uh…hallway? To just stand there. It was a poor choice and looked really staged…and everything we mocked Obama for in the election. I WILL say, though, that Jindal is an ACTUAL executive while Obami just played one on tv.

Mommypundit on February 25, 2009 at 2:38 PM

Christopher,

You’re a liar, racist.

Christien on February 25, 2009 at 2:38 PM

That’s ludicrous. Democrats and blacks can’t be racist! And if you judge Obama by the content of his character instead of the color of his skin, that makes you a racist.

Oh, and low taxes are racist.

The Louisiana Governor’s Mansion was built in the 1960s. The architectual style is inspired by many old houses in Louisiana.

If you want antebellum houses, go to the Garden District in New Orleans. Many Civil War houses exist because of how quickly New Orleans fell to Union troops.

Lay-Z on February 25, 2009 at 2:46 PM

How is it that this imbecile still has a job? Seriously? From his leg tingles, to his on-air rants with his butt-buddy Olbermann, to now his “Oh God”s and arguably racially tinged remarks… it’s inconceivable.

Al Sharpton is starting a revolution over monkey cartoons yet this ape remains, time after time, in a major broadcasting position.

How is it that anyone on earth can reconcile his continued employment against the character assassinations the likes of Imus, Howard Stern and even the dipshit Dog the Bounty Hunter. I am no defending the latter, but surely Matthews continued inexcusable behavior, with nary an apology or retraction, is more than sufficient grounds to relegate this piece of trash to a dumpster somewhere.

Bobby Jindal doesn’t look like the stereotypical Ma and Pa Kettle Republicans that the Elite Left feed to the MSM who then obligingly scatter hither and there to Mr. and Mrs. America. Neither does the new RNC Chairman Steele. It is useful to have blowhards like Chris Mathews continually involved in these “ambiguities” of race baiting/demeaning remarks for a couple of reasons: first, it continually reminds everyone that there is turmoil out there regarding “bias” etc. that is NOT coming from the Right – but the Left; and secondly, Bobby Jindal doesn’t necessarily NOT PROFIT from even air time that may “paint” him as less than stellar. At this stage in the 2010/2012 games – just about any sort of air time can be useful. If it is somewhat potentially negative, as it may be here, it further angers the Right, and it gives Bobby Jindal a nice critique of how he’s viewed so that he can improve. Secondly, as in the case of Sarah P. – people are beginning to see how these “assassinations” start from the MSM – as in this case with Mathews again running his mouth inappropriately. Lastly, everytime something like this happens, the MSM turns a dead eye to it or puts it on page 67. But the Right doesn’t forget nor forgive – and as these incidents grow in number – the next innocent Chimp cartoon that the N.Y. Post gets blasted for – well, all of these Lefty slurs are going to be popping one by one out for view again.

Epic double standard.

Heh.

Funny that he drew attention to it, because that’s pretty much what Louisiana looks like. It’s incredible how much they’ve preserved. I have friends who live in a house that was turned into apartments, and though it’s a little cramped, it’s beautiful.

I stayed in a similar house that was turned into a Bed & Breakfast. The very flamboyant owner loved picking up ante-bellum pieces. We stayed on a bed from Storyville (which was gross if you thought too much about it but cool if you didn’t.).

Hmmmm, let’s see..Bobby Jindal, Governor of a Southern State broadcasting from a building with Southern architecture..what a surprise! I can see why he would have been so startled. *rolling my eyes*

Perhaps Gov. Jindal should have taken the time to design his own set and signs proclaiming his importance ( something along the lines of “Office of the future Presidental Contender”) as someone else did not too long ago. Then Mr. Matthews might have gotten another tingle.

“Antebellum” is one word, no?

toliver on February 25, 2009 at 2:41 PM

It would seem so, yes.

Given that Bobby did his speech at the L.A. governor’s mansion, it would be a bit difficult to escape an “antebellum look.”

The Mansion was designed by the architectural firm of Annan and Gilmer of Shreveport, Louisiana. The inspiration for the exterior design was Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana. Like many plantation homes built between 1830 and 1860, Oak Alley was designed with a second story veranda that was typical of many Louisiana houses.

BrianA on February 25, 2009 at 2:56 PM

As others have mentioned, the speech was apparently filmed at the Governor’s mansion, not on a “set.” It took me 10 seconds to find a picture of the mansion (the rotunda) showing the same chairs and wallpaper that are in the video. Perhaps the fact that I am not hindered by a degree in journalism made it easier for me to find… but you’d think an experienced political reporter would have anticipated that the Governor of Louisiana might deliver his response in the Governor’s mansion. Then again, since his man is rather (in)famous for the use of styrofoam columns, I guess Matthews never considered that the facility being used was an authentic building.

From the Governor’s mansion foundation web site:

The Mansion was designed by the architectural firm of Annan and Gilmer of Shreveport, Louisiana. The inspiration for the exterior design was Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana. Like many plantation homes built between 1830 and 1860, Oak Alley was designed with a second story veranda that was typical of many Louisiana houses.
The second-floor veranda found at Oak Alley was omitted. It was thought that the concept of a second story veranda was too informal for a Governor’s Mansion. Although the new Mansion is in the Greek Revival style, it also incorporates several Georgian features such as dormers, a fanlight of the doorway at the front entrance, and the long window on the circular stairs in the rotunda.

Oak Alley is listed as an example of antebellum architecture in Wikipedia, so I guess he got that right.

So at least we have an answer. There are indeed limits to the Slumdog Millionaire touch of gold. Not every tale of a plucky Indian lad can capture the hearts of Americans.

This blog found the Paris Hilton/McCain ad racist.

But calling Governor a “Plucky Indian Lad” and tying him to Slumdog? Soo not racist.
