Mark Sanford: Anyone who wants Obama to fail is an idiot

Not so much a substantive disagreement with Limbaugh and others in the “I hope he fails” camp as a disagreement about tone. He and Rush are both skeptical in the extreme that New Deal II will lead to anything but ruin, but Sanford’s at least nominally open to the possibility that it might work. Limbaugh, less so. Compare this bit from his interview with Hannity last month…

I am hearing many Republicans say that very thing. “Well, we want him to succeed,” and prominent Republicans! “Yes, we want him to succeed.” They have laid down. They have totally. They’re drinking the Kool-Aid, too. They have no guts to stand up for what their beliefs are because they’re afraid of criticism. They’re afraid of being called racists. They’re afraid of not having gotten with the program. Now success can be defined two ways. I said earlier, “I don’t know about this guy.” I really don’t. I’ve got my suspicions and they’re pretty close to convictions, but we’re going to have to wait to see what he does. Now if he turns out to be a Reagan, if he adds Reagan to his recipe of FDR and Lincoln … if he does not eliminate the Bush tax cuts, I would call that success. So yes, I would hope he would succeed if he acts like Reagan. But if he’s going to do FDR — if he’s going to do The New New Deal all over, which we will call here The Raw Deal — why would I want him to succeed? Look, he’s my president. The fact that he is historic is irrelevant to me now. It matters not at all. If he is going to implement a far-left agenda… Look, I think it’s already decided: a $2 trillion in stimulus? The growth of government? I think the intent here is to create as many dependent Americans as possible looking to government for their hope and salvation. If he gets nationalized health care, I mean, it’s over, Sean. We’re never going to roll that back. That’s the end of America as we have known it, because that’s then going to set the stage for everything being government owned, operated, or provided. Why would I want that to succeed? I don’t believe in that. I know that’s not how this country is going to be great in the future; it’s not what made this country great. So I shamelessly say, “No! I want him to fail.”

… to Sanford, speaking today with RCP:

And I said [to Obama], “Man to man, I dont want to disagree with you on anything. And as an American, I absolutely want you to succeed. And therefore, as an American who wants you to succeed because we’re all in this boat together it’s incumbent upon me, if I think an idea is a bad idea, even though I don’t want to disagree, to lay it out.” And he said his say and I said my say and he said his say and I said my say, and we called it quits.

I don’t want him to fail. Anybody who wants him to fail is an idiot, because it means we’re all in trouble. But I do think, in that same vein, if you’ve looked at the pages of history, if you’ve looked at the pages of economic data that I’ve looked at over a long period of time — I’ve got a masters in business from the University of Virginia, I’ve worked up in New York in finance — if you’ve looked at that kind of stuff and you legitimately think that something ain’t going to work, you’d be cheating him and cheating yourself if you didn’t lay it out and call an ace an ace in terms of where you’re coming from.

Exit question: Significant difference or no? And if so, how much of that is attributable to their respective professions?

I want what’s good for my country. Period. As a member of the ranks of the chronically penniless and un(der)employed, I cringe at the thought of employers or prospective employers of mine being robbed blind. I don’t think Obama has near as much sympathy for “the little guy” as he claims to.

gryphon202 on February 25, 2009 at 9:42 PM

Barry’s failing, regardless of whether anyone WANTS him to fail.

Grow up, Mark.

Christien on February 25, 2009 at 9:42 PM

I will clarify my position once again…if it matters to anyone but me…

Obama is set on ruining this country by bringing down the economy. He believes because the soviets fell largely due to economics and turned (albeit slightly) toward capitalism, the reverse can be done to the USA. Obama wants to take it further and bring us DEEP into socialism, surpassing the EU in this endeavor, and head into communism before anyone can notice the difference.

In THIS, I hope Obama the sickophant sock puppet in chief not only fails MISERABLY, but causes the socialist PIG left to fall on their faces so hard it’ll be another 50 years easy before anyone considers anything a liberal P.O.S. says as even remotely valuable.

Take that, asshat.

Spiritk9 on February 25, 2009 at 9:43 PM

Exit answer: I think it demonstrates a difference in both professions and positions. I never understood Rush’s “I hope he fails” comment to mean that he wishes ill will upon America; rather, that fiscal common sense would prevail in place of Obama’s naked political land grab via massive government spending. Sanford, by comparison, comes from the angle that we are now in this boat with Obama, thanks to the way Congress voted, and we’d better hope it doesn’t sink – because if it does, we all go down with it.

At this point, the best we can hope for is a change in 2010, but I will admit that from my point of view, for whatever it’s worth, such change is gonna be a long shot, if it happens at all.

/sigh

Wanderlust on February 25, 2009 at 9:43 PM

If Obama fails it doesn’t mean America fails. In fact, I dare say it’s quite the opposite.

SouthernGent on February 25, 2009 at 9:43 PM

Sanford is DEAD WRONG here… got to think big picture…. If Obama fails, we maybe get a real bad multi-year recession or even depression…. but we learn, once and for all, how NOT to fight an economic downturn…. and Conservatives, once re-elected, will have a mandate to throw all this garbage out.

If Obama succeeds, we get full blown socialism. We will never turn it back. And more importantly, a bad precedent is set… the next time we have a recession, we will be under pressure to use the same socialistic tactics to get out.

The problem with Sanford’s argument is as follows: It is possible that an Obama Failure is BETTER, in the long run, for the USA than an Obama success.

What if Obama FAILING is the better for the USA?

BPD on February 25, 2009 at 9:44 PM

Can Allah’s sympathy trolling gets more obvious? This atheist wants you gone!

Apologetic California on February 25, 2009 at 9:44 PM

Anybody who wants him to fail is an idiot, because it means we’re all in trouble.

Rush explains the “failure”. I don’t listen to him but have read here that he qualified the “failure”. To argue about general failure is idiotic.

Yes, I want Obama to fail at socialism/communism!!! If that should make me an idiot, I’ll wear that badge with the utmost of honors.

Entelechy on February 25, 2009 at 9:44 PM

jmarcure on February 25, 2009 at 9:42 PM

Dude, at least claim that you’re an idiot savant. Sounds posh, dunnit?

Fortunata on February 25, 2009 at 9:44 PM

Love it. Sanford sounds like an adult. Love Rush but we’re not going to win this way. We’re going to win by becoming the party people trust again and that’s not going to happen if we’re rooting for failure. Face it, the Dems were rooting for failure on a lot of different fronts for 8 years but needed this hope/change happy guy in order to win. We do too.

Karol on February 25, 2009 at 9:45 PM

A distinction without a difference. Rush put it out there bluntly, and Sanford is finessing it. Rush said as much when he qualified it as being in the context of Obama’s agenda.

JeffWeimer on February 25, 2009 at 9:45 PM

Allah,
There isnt a whole lot of difference in substance. Its only in tone. Rush is a radio show host and is passionate about his views – Sanford cannot afford to be that way, since he’s the Guvner..

Sanford is ready to give Obama the benefit of the doubt if Obama comes up with stupid/socialist plans .i.e. Sanford is ready to believe that Obama isnt intentionally trying to come expand Government.. Rush on the other hand is convinced that this is what Obama wanted all along and that this mad dash to bring on porkulus only proves that Obama is not acting with honest intentions.

Sanford cannot openly say it but he probably agrees with Rush.

nagee76 on February 25, 2009 at 9:45 PM

ClassicCon on February 25, 2009 at 9:45 PM

mauipundit on February 25, 2009 at 9:45 PM

Different wording to suit the different professions. Part of Rush’s stock in trade is to be a provocateur–to stir things up–that increases ratings which in turn brings in the advertising dollars.

Sanford has to speak more diplomatically, but if you really look at what he’s saying, he’s saying essentially the same thing as Rush, only much more circumspectly.

Rush is a commentator and entertainer–he doesn’t have to govern–all he has to do is keep his ratings up and keep the listeners, affiliates, and advertisers happy. Sanford has to listen to his constituents and legislate while his party is the minority party. They each have their respective jobs to do.

Matt Helm on February 25, 2009 at 9:46 PM

Governors, seeing as they’re executives of real states with real people and make the real life decisions effecting those peoples lives every day, tend to be more open to not getting their ideological way. its part of being an executive and having to make the final calls. you’ll see this more and more often…Jindal praising Obama and insisting he’s ready to work with him, Sanford stating flat out that he has a responsability to voice opposition to things he finds misguided but not to openly wish failure on the president.

Remember the kind of responsibilities people have and that a person’s seat determines where they stand.

ernesto on February 25, 2009 at 9:47 PM

If Obama fails it doesn’t mean America fails. In fact, I dare say it’s quite the opposite.

SouthernGent on February 25, 2009 at 9:43 PM

Carter failed and America survived. We can all pray for a similar outcome.

thomasaur on February 25, 2009 at 9:47 PM

Sorry, I had my wires crossed, I meant that Sanford had to govern his state while his party was the minority party at the national level. Trying to do several things at once…

Matt Helm on February 25, 2009 at 9:47 PM

Sanford is a fool. Using sock puppets ideas (or lack thereof) is simply going to extend the recession and possibly move us into a depression.

This was done before as you all know.

Sanford doesn’t call this a failure? He wants sock puppet to succeed in making us fail? Who is the REAL fail here anyway?

Spiritk9 on February 25, 2009 at 9:47 PM

Both men seem to be saying that if Obama is successful in implementing his policies, it will be disastrous for the US.

Focus on how bad the results of those policies will be for us and future generations.

Separate the man from his policies and go after the latter.

They should be using the phrase “obama’s disastrous policies” in stead of “Obama.”

It’s Alinksy who advocated personalizing political attacks.

“Good post baby” (In a Terry Tate voice)

That’s an awesome question Allahpundit. Rush Limbaugh is a reflection of his audience, not a Senator. Move Rush Limbaugh to the Senate and he would start to sound like a Senator. We see it when Rush does television interviews, it’s like a different guy.

Theworldisnotenough on February 25, 2009 at 9:51 PM

There is no disagreement, Rush Limbaugh said basically the same thing that Mark Sanford is saying, that he wants Obama to fail if he wants to implement policies that will harm the country.

ujorge on February 25, 2009 at 9:51 PM

What we need to do is clearly EXPLAIN why this is lunacy…we are doing very little of that at all!

winston on February 25, 2009 at 9:52 PM

Fail in what…creating a 600B “pool” of money:

By first identifying a large pot of money to underwrite health care reform — before laying out a proposal on who would be covered or how — Obama hopes to signal his willingness to negotiate with Congress over the details of an eventual plan.

Huh? Give me my money now, then we’ll negotiate.

Does he want him to succeed by ramming thru 800B dollar bill that was created in Pelosi’s office as an emergency that no one had time to read?

How about creating a imperial and unitary executive.

Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the longest-serving Democratic senator, is criticizing President Obama’s appointment of White House “czars” to oversee federal policy, saying these executive positions amount to a power grab by the executive branch.

Succeed/Fail…I think the choice is clear

r keller on February 25, 2009 at 9:52 PM

Eh, I don’t see much of a difference.

Rush says – So yes, I would hope he would succeed if he acts like Reagan. Sanford says – if you’ve looked at that kind of stuff and you legitimately think that something ain’t going to work, you’d be cheating him and cheating yourself if you didn’t lay it out and call an ace an ace in terms of where you’re coming from.

Gov. Sanford: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

I wish Obama’s parents had failed.

They did fail. The father left Obama and his mother. Obama only saw his real father once when he was 10. His father was a washed up alcoholic. His mother was a lefty who paraded around as an academic and left little Barry to be raised by his Grandmother. Obama’s need for power stems from his feelings of impotence as a child. They is so much darkness in Obama’s past that it is frightening to think what he could do if his buttons are pushed the wrong way.
I think that is why the Republicans are pussy footing around. They are treating Obama like a spoiled child more than they are treating him like the leader of the free world. I just wonder how long it will remain free???

This post seems like much ado about nothing. If you read the whole thing Sanford is not saying anything that different from Rush. The title line, which is in the second paragraph of the second quote is a nuance, pretty inconsequential to his point, which is the same as Rush’s.
Seems to me the headline is designed to get knee-jerk reactions from the commenters.

This is where Republicans are going astray and we will continue to be an ineffectual minority in Washington. This horrible plague of being non-offensive is the death of independent thought and principles. I want Obama to fail, not for spite, not because he’s black or a Democrat. I want him to fail because the failure of his socialist agenda means victory for America.

I’m pretty sure there were a lot of people who hoped Hitler would fail. Although Hitler could give a compelling speech–and so charismatic….

Entelechy on February 25, 2009 at 9:57 PM

Unfortunately, not really. The others are able to be as they are because the US generated so much wealth and was very generous with it. We kept the peace, freeing others from defense costs and responsibilities. We were the market that generated the medical advances (and paid for them) which allowed others to get them for nothing. We are the economic engine of the world, allowing others to live by just selling into our market. And on and on …

If the US became like the others (leeches, essentially), then the whole world would change and the ensuing chaos would be unimaginable.

On top of that, the idiot messiah is not looking to make us like others. He wants to steal all of our wealth and distribute it to the sh!tholes of the world, until there is nothing left. Social and economic “justice” (i.e. REVENGE) is what he wants.

This is the type of headline I expect from the MSM. It does not accurately reflect the content of the article but it is useful for liberals to employ to ridicule conservatives. Unfortunately I have already seen it used exactly for that purpose by trolls in this forum and no doubt will see it used all over by liberal propagandists for some time to come.

The real failure is the Republican party. The abandoned their principals and turned into democrat light. Sad, sad times for America!

Again two totally different things. Rush is saying that if Obama is going to bring socialism to this country then he wants him to fail. What is so hard to understand about that?

Good Lord! Dont we all want him to fail if trading freedom and liberty for socialism and big government control is his goal?

If Obama was leading from the center or from a conservative perspective then would we all not want him to succeed?

It seems to me that all Republicans are running around trying to figure out where to align themselves for the next election cycle that they are forgetting one important thing, winning doesnt mean shite if we sell our souls and spit on everything the Founding Fathers had in mind when they founded this great nation.

Does it? or is just winning the next election is all that matters here? If that is the case I will need to find myself a new party that holds honor and conviction above just vote count!

……… until now. Thank you, MSM, thank you NEA, thank you Democratic party who’s base is a “victim” of one circumstance or another.

Last night’s speech went against every principle of what this country was built upon……..

…… more like payback and reparations for slavery through the back door, along with rewards for bad behavior.

9,000 earmarks on the new 400+ Billion spending bill, just after they passed a Trillion dollars, and more is on the way….

……. when this hits the fan, and no one is able to come to your rescue, what will you do?

Seven Percent Solution on February 25, 2009 at 10:14 PM

I have no idea how conservatives could root for success of Big Government. Obama’s agenda is an anathema to people who believe in liberty and freedom.

Maybe Sanford’s support for the goals of Pelosi/Reid/Obama lies in some bizarre definition of “success”. Who knows. But just when I think I can throw my support with the GOP, someone goes and opens his piehole and a turd comes out.

sara in va on February 25, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Rush is saying that if Obama is going to bring socialism to this country then he wants him to fail. What is so hard to understand about that?

Good Lord! Dont we all want him to fail if trading freedom and liberty for socialism and big government control is his goal?

If Obama was leading from the center or from a conservative perspective then would we all not want him to succeed?

HoosierCon on February 25, 2009 at 10:11 PM

Don’t fall for it. Don’t get sucked in.

We all know what the deal is. But there are operatives on the blogs and throughout the media that believe they can divide and conquer us.

Don’t believe it.

We can only do it to ourselves.

Somebody posted on another thread that Sarah Palin is brilliant. Here she is remaining in Alaska doing her job and regaining her popularity, while declining to attend the NGA conference and the invitation from CPAC to speak, watching from afar while first Jindal bombs in his rebuttal and Sanford diminishes his credentials with the conservative movement by subtly attacking Rush Limbaugh and to boot allowing Obama to expose himself for who he really is through the stimulus package and the SOTU.

technopeasant on February 25, 2009 at 10:17 PM

I don’t wish failure on him or us, but honestly—I don’t see how this can succeed over the long term. No policy that is based on spending far, far more that you earn can ever work.

Finally someone in the GOP who has the balls to stand up to Mr. Pharmacy.

dcwvu on February 25, 2009 at 10:17 PM

Scare of the night, near heartattack, but definitely heartache, until I went back to see that I hadn’t lost MDS.

That made me laugh out loud. It’s fair to say, I didn’t react the same way Sanford did.

Spirit of 1776 on February 25, 2009 at 10:17 PM

Too bad we can’t judge our president by the content of his character.

JohnJ on February 25, 2009 at 10:18 PM

I guess I am an idiot. Most in here might say the same…. but with now almost 2 trillion being spent here soon, I am goingto say I miss Bush!

upinak on February 25, 2009 at 10:19 PM

Sanford was not speaking to conservatives, he was speaking to the broader audience in general terms.

His conservative credentials are pretty damned solid.

Stop making it out to be more than it is.

Suckers.

The real failure is the Republican party. The abandoned their principals and turned into democrat light.
trs on February 25, 2009 at 10:06 PM

I feel the same way when I see Republican politicians being racist as I feel when I see them advocating collectivism: America already HAS a Party for that; we don’t need two!

Some of my best friends are Americans, and I can vouch for the fact that a very great number of them are not in the least bit liberal. But nearly ALL of our national-level politicians and media figures seem to be that way.

Don’t get me wrong: It’s a big, wide wonderful world, and there’s plenty of room for Communists and bigots. But why the Hell can’t conservative viewpoints be represented in public office too?

I have a vague recollection of someone telling me back in grade school that America was supposed to be a democracy. How in the Hell did we get this screwed up?

logis on February 25, 2009 at 10:25 PM

Great page of quotes from our founding fathers and other great people.

These times have tried my optimism like no other. How can 545 people put their hand on the bible to uphold the constitution and be so derelict in their duties? Someone near DC go check the Jefferson Memorial to see if he is weeping.

“Balls”? Standing up to Obama requires balls. Being anti-Rush is easy; it gains NYC-DC cred.

It’s not their fault. Most of them are illiterates.

progressoverpeace on February 25, 2009 at 10:27 PM

Sanford sounded so good the other night in the network segment with three other governors. He was the one on the right-most position and really raised his value in my eyes at least. But, like many (most?) Republicans, he’s afraid of the press — must distance himself from Rush or sounding like he wants Obama to fail. (When he definitely SHOULD want Obama’s policies to fail. Obama is pulling us to socialism and those policies must fail if we are to succeed as a Country and not become part of the New World Order.)
Oh, and that “call an ace an ace” comment is another bow to political correctness and shows the fear.

Christian Conservative on February 25, 2009 at 10:27 PM

Obama is going to fail. He’s set himself up for too many big idea projects with no actual attention paid to the details.
Trust me, I work for a health insurance company. Our executives constantly come up with improvement strategies with little thought to their actual implementation. And of course, 80% of them are completely useless strategies that hurt more than help the company.
Obama has no use for the niggling little details of any of his big ideas and has no competent wingmen (as it were) to work out any of the details. Pelosi’s too busy springing to her feet and clapping like a trained seal, Biden’s too busy trying to remember website names and that’s no one messes with him, and well, the rest of Obama’s merry little band are too in awe of him and themselves to have a point.

He will fail. Just how much of an epic failure is the question.

mjk on February 25, 2009 at 10:28 PM

Sanford’s the idiot if he believes this happy ObamaLand horsesh*t has a prayer of saving America. Spending ungody sums we don’t have and will never be able to pay back cannot work. I think Sanford is starstruck. Somebody should tell him that Obama isn’t acutally the messiah, and that in the end O won’t even be able to save his own behind.

RandyChandler on February 25, 2009 at 10:29 PM

you’d be cheating him and cheating yourself if you didn’t lay it out and call an acespade an ace space in terms of where you’re coming from.

Coward….Just say the saying the way it is meant to be said and if someone says you are racist, have the gnads to call them down. Quit pussy footin’ around….*sigh*
