Kristol: Obama no war president

posted at 11:15 am on February 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Bill Kristol takes exception today not with what Barack Obama said in his quasi-State of the Union speech last night, but for what he didn’t say.  Obama called us a “nation at war” for the past seven years, but then curiously forgot to mention that he had just increased troop levels on one front while neglecting to mention that he has begun considering a significant withdrawal from the other.  Shouldn’t a president of a nation at war discuss that with Congress in his first joint session?

Obama did say he’s “carefully reviewing our policies in both wars.” “War” is just one area in which the president conducts and reviews public policy, apparently no more urgent than energy, health care or education–indeed, perhaps less so. You’d never know from the one-sentence discussion of Afghanistan that just last week the president had ordered an additional 17,000 troops there. Obama doesn’t seem to think his responsibility as commander in chief is in any way special. He certainly felt no responsibility even to begin to educate the public about this theater to which he’s committing additional American soldiers.

Instead, both the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were treated as sideshows to “a new era of engagement” that Obama claims has begun. The only particular place mentioned by Obama, in addition to Iraq and Afghanistan/Pakistan, was Israel: “To seek progress toward a secure and lasting peace between Israel and her neighbors, we have appointed an envoy to sustain our effort.” The Israeli-Arab dispute and its envoy merits a mention. Yet Iran and its nuclear program does not?

This was not the speech of a man who even contemplates the possibility of using force within the next year to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. This was not the speech of a man who thinks America needs to be reminded about the dangers out there in the world, because Americans might have to be summoned to deal with them. This was not the speech of a man who thinks of himself as a war president.

Obama didn’t run as a war president, either.  He ran as the man who would get America beyond the war in Iraq and restore the vitality of old alliances, some of which did us little good in tough times anyway.  Obama did promise to fight in Afghanistan more vigorously, mostly when pitted against John McCain in the general election, who did run as a war president, and got shellacked.  Obama might have taken a message from that experience.

Still, the primary duty of a president is not Economist in Chief, but in securing the nation and ensuring victory in wars we fight.  For good reason, Obama focused on the economy, probably more to quell the fears his own rhetoric and the stumbles of his own team have provoked.  However, the nation needed to hear from its Commander in Chief last night, too, explaining why we sent 17,000 troops to fight in Afghanistan and why he feels we have achieved enough of our goals in Iraq to begin the drawdown.  How does Obama plan to continue fighting terrorism and other threats, such as the Iranian nuclear-weapons program, which Obama never even bothered to mention to Congress in his speech?

America is a country at war, whether Obama likes it or not.  He has a responsibility to national security that went all but unmentioned in last night’s speech.  That’s a poor, Jimmy Carter-like start to Obama’s presidency.

Michael Yon found one thing to cheer him, however.

why bother attacking us, we are collapsing from within.

all they have to do is wait it out then do a little attack when they calculate that is all it will take to take us.

jp on February 25, 2009 at 11:25 AM

Yes, he forgot the war on terror, but unfortunately the terrorists have a habit of reminding us about it. He didn’t mention it because nothing he spoke about had anything to do with benefitting the country. It is all about how he foresees consolidating and holding on to power. He is going to make sure no one/no corporation has the wealth to challenge him and then ensure that everyone else is completely beholden to him and the Democrats. The war on terror does nothing for him or what he wants to achieve…that’s why it will never be mentioned and he could care less. Unless they attack us again, which will be used as another excuse for him to consolidate power.

Well … I can understand this. The idiot messiah’s “war plans” pretty much amount to arming arab/persian/muslim terrorists and destroying Israel (as per Samantha Power, his good buddy Rashidi – where’s that video? – and his other friends and advisors) so I can understand why he thought this wasn’t a good thing to mention. He’s saving that for later, after he’s totally destroyed our economy. Remember, “it’s desstroying the economy, stupid”.

C’mon, there’s no Islamic terrorism — it’s just a big misunderstanding between the Muslims and the rest of us, mainly caused by Bush. Bambi and his superior intellect will sort all of that out when he goes on his official Muslim-nation apology tour. And he’ll be sure to take his (our) checkbook along, because that $1 Billion to Hamas announced yesterday was just the down payment. Bambi will spread some more of our wealth around, give the Muslims a glimpse of his gleaming pecs and magical smile, tell them how sorry we are for all the evil we’ve done to them, and they’ll all love us again.

AZCoyote on February 25, 2009 at 11:27 AM

We will have to keep checking for the next seven days, with Acting President Obama and his war analogy, take the average of what Obama says over those seven days, and then try to figure out what he really meant to say.

Some are calling it lying, when it’s really just jive talking, hoodwinking and bamboozling with Acting President Obama. He still intends to do what he intends to do, regardless what he says on any given day.

tarpon on February 25, 2009 at 11:28 AM

No,no,no. Obama won. America has no enemies anymore. Someday, Obama will be on an aircraft carrier and will have a huge banner behind him that says “I won”.

I know a lot of people in the military are against torture because they want the “moral high ground” (like Michael Yon) but, those bastards expect us to treat them like POWs.The only way to deal with them is to make them fear for their life by using aggressive/ enhanced interrogation methods. Once we start using those methods, they crack immediately and that’s way the CIA uses them, not because they’re a bunch of sadistic sobs.

As for Obama on the GWOT, I don’t expect much of a change in policy. The DoD has been planning on redeploying from Iraq in 2011 after the surge worked and this new surge for Afghanistan has been in the works for a year now. It seems to me he’s letting Gates handle the wars, he’s just toning done the rhetoric to shut up the far left anti war crowd (the ones that got him elected) and not face the same harassment that President Bush faced.

What can we learn from the few sentences President Obama devoted to foreign policy in his speech to Congress tonight?

The treatment of foreign policy was perfunctory at best. Obama did say he’s “carefully reviewing our policies in both wars.”

Obama doesn’t seem to think his responsibility as commander in chief is in any way special. He certainly felt no responsibility even to begin to educate the public about this theater to which he’s committing [17,000] additional American soldiers.

This was not the speech of a man who even contemplates the possibility of using force within the next year to prevent … the dangers out there in the world, because Americans might have to be summoned to deal with them.

Avoid distractive overkill. Minimalism. Excellent maneuver for perspective, Krystol.

Obama represents vested interests who force falling objects from the sky in order to convince people to panic, for it would seem the sky is falling. Obama’s vested interests solve their manufactured problem by sending us all home to be ashamed as cowards and bad children, to tuck our heads beneath the sand. With our heads buried, we’re not supposed to notice Socialist Big Government Too Big To Fail not only picking our pockets but bleeding us dry. No complaints tolerated. If anyone comes up to gasp for air, their knocked back down to await the Big Government Business promise to trickle down some of our own money back to us.

FDR’s progressive socialists flattened the “trickle down economics” theory that had been global knowledge in order to make the world flat “again” (as it it ever were: the power of idea).

Obama is augmenting FDR’s New Deal into a complete United States of Federal Socialism.

In Socialism, there is no “trickle down economics” tolerated. The individual is not tolerated. Socialism does not tolerate The Constitution Of The United States. Socialism does not tolerate enlightenment, liberty or justice under the law.

Why can’t any one of our “Leaders” come out and declare victory in Iraq?
Do they need someone to say “I surrender” before they can?
I surrender!! There, I said it.
Can we now please call it what it is?

Fartnokker on February 25, 2009 at 12:39 PM

Obama will not make the case for war because it would back him into a corner where he could no longer win any points by withdrawing if the mood strikes him.

Obama is currently contemplating his win-win options. He can be the guy who wins the war or he can be the guy who ends the war. The troops have got to realize that Obama is playing a legacy game with their lives and their sacrifice will be meaningless because there is no way you can win this kind of war with anything less than total dedication.

Buddahpundit on February 25, 2009 at 12:39 PM

I agree that the less we demand that Obama talk about the wars, the less pressure he will feel to pander to his base, and the more likely he will be to follow the recommendations of the adults.

Immolate on February 25, 2009 at 12:40 PM

Or mentioning the MASSIVE increase to the deficit he pushed for and got in the first 30 days of his term.

Very HOLLOW.

Marine_Bio on February 25, 2009 at 12:18 PM

What I find most interesting is that no one has really bothered mentioning that, while nothing from that cr#ppy piece of Porkulus legislation has begun in any way, it was soooooo important to ram it through without looking at it. I just want to hear someone ask, “What if the Porkulus was just passed, today? Without the idiot messiah’s having LIED and started the fear-mongering about it, no one would have noticed any difference, at all.” That’s all I ask, for someone to question the idiot messiah about this obvious economy-killing joke that he forced on the nation. The GOP lets the moron, and his America-hating supporters, off way too easy. Where are those shovels?

progressoverpeace on February 25, 2009 at 12:40 PM

This is the first Pres since the carter 70’s that is a dem and has NOT been impeached.

YET. He is a graduate of the Daley / Blagojevich / Rezko machine. If the Republicans take over the House in 2010, anything can happen.

Steve Z on February 25, 2009 at 12:47 PM

Still, the primary duty of a president is not Economist in Chief, but in securing the nation and ensuring victory in wars we fight.

The Economist in Chief is watching the stock market tank. Maybe he might want to change the subject.

How does Obama plan to continue fighting terrorism and other threats, such as the Iranian nuclear-weapons program, which Obama never even bothered to mention to Congress in his speech?

Ummm…he doesn’t. Doing what needs to be done with Iran, terrorism, let alone economics makes people not like you so Obama has a built in aversion to it.

Immolate on February 25, 2009 at 12:40 PM

Perhaps that is true, but do we really want a crumbly flake like that sending our boys out to fight and die? The pressure is bound to come eventually, as the death toll rises. How many American boys should be sacrificed between now and then?

I think Obama has taken a page from the MSM, they don’t report it, it didn’t happen.

Same with the war, Obama doesn’t mention it, it ain’t happening.

I’m afraid that doesn’t count. You have not met the “preconditions” required for Obama to treat you as an negotiating partner.
