House passes $410 billion spending bill as Obama prepares $634 billion health care fund

posted at 5:03 pm on February 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

The health-care money would be provided over 10 years, so, you know, no worries. Granted, they don’t have an actual plan on how to spend it yet — but then they don’t have an economic plan yet either.

Obama would pay for the expansion by trimming tax breaks for the wealthy and tightening payments to insurers, hospitals and physicians, according to a senior administration official.

By first identifying a large pot of money to underwrite health care reform — before laying out a proposal on who would be covered or how — Obama hopes to signal his willingness to negotiate with Congress over the details of an eventual plan.

“We wanted to get this process going by putting some serious resources on the table,” said the official, who was not permitted to speak on the record until formal release of the budget blueprint. “This is a reserve fund, instead of a 700-page plan. We learned the lessons of the past and want to work interactively with Congress. This is a first step.”

This won’t pay for the whole thing, in other words. It’s a down payment, with the balance to be paid by the permanent tax increases on the middle class that are coming, as the NYT reminds us in a moment of amazing candor today. How much will that balance be, allowing for the inevitable cost overruns? Only The One, in his supreme wisdom, knows. As for the spending bill that passed the House this afternoon, there are literally almost 9,000 earmarks in it — and it still drew more than a dozen GOP votes. It’s an amazing testament to the confidence Obama and the Democrats have in their popularity right now that they’re willing to hit the public with another trillion in future spending so soon after dropping $800 billion on the stimulus and with another round of TARP on the way. Exit question: How much will that “down payment” end up ballooning to? $2 trillion? $3 trillion?

According to the Tax Policy Center, the Obama plan will cut the wealth of the country in half relative to the McCain plan.

A trillion here with no plan….

…and a trillion there with no plan…

…and pretty soon you are talking about real money and still no plan …

…but who needs a plan? Just spend a trillion a week and pretty soon the Chinese will be parking their money somewhere else and asking us to cash in the treasury securities they do hold…

…and we get to pay them back in deeply depreciated dollars! What could be a better deal?

What could possibly go wrong?

Wait till next week and he’ll break his own record!

Who cares whether or not there’s a “plan”, since the “plan” is probably some 4 slide PowerPoint presentation with 10 bullets, put together by some 22 year old staffer.

All Democrats are worthless idiots and there is nothing that comes out of their mouths that is of any value to anyone.

NoDonkey on February 25, 2009 at 5:53 PM

Wake up my friend. Bankrupting the country has been the Democratic goal for many decades.

Maxx on February 25, 2009 at 5:17 PM

They don’t think they’re “bankrupting” the country. They think there is an unlimited amount of money they can extract, without affecting the behavior of businesses or citizens in the slightest. It’s called “static analysis,” and it’s a religious belief to liberals. For example, if ABC Company makes $100 million per year in profits, you can tax ABC Company up to $99,999,99.99 without affecting their behavior. Likewise, a $6 trillion economy equals $6 trillion in potential tax receipts. A 10% hike in tax rates brings 10% more money into the treasury.

Liberals also do not believe in the law of unintended consequences, and are baffled when a new luxury tax on expensive yachts puts thousands of middle-class people out of work, because the industry collapses. They will be equally confused when “universal college education” renders college educations even more worthless than they already are, or “universal health care” produces more dead people.

When this is all over – and, thanks to Obama, the present American system will be in a terminal crisis within ten years – the first order of business must be to reconstitute the government with strict rules setting caps on tax rates and government spending, effectively outlawing socialsim. There will always be a voting constituency eager to hear socialist promises, and politicians willing to make them, even when they reach Obama-esque heights of absurdity. The only way to guarantee the success of a free-market democracy is to rule this kind of nonsense off the table, before the discussion even begins. My preferred method of doing this is extending the vote only to those who pay taxes, requiring all tax revenue to be spent within the year after it is collected (no ten-year utopian schemes) and outlawing deficit spending except for military emergencies. None of these things is thinkable right now, but the terms of the discussion will be different after the crash.

“trimming tax breaks for the wealthy” = raising taxes on job/wealth producers (which results in fewer jobs, less wealth, and ultimately fewer wealthy to tax, as they flee for jurisdictions with lower tax burdens)

tightening payments to insurers, hospitals and physicians

This of course means, “Hospitpals and physicians must continue to treat people with Medicaid or be shut down, AND we’re now going to pay you much less money to treat them…so you’ll eventually have to shut down.”
I assume it’s so that the government can completely take over the healthcare system.

If the Senate pushes this bill through it will be over unless we can take over in 2010. The damage will be done. I don’t see us ever recovering from the amount of debt that the taxpayers have been asked to take on. No amount of cuts or tax increase will cover this. It’s only getting worse.

Sighting: Rahm Emanuel and Sen. Collins dine at Central

The Hill’s In the know

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel joined centrist Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) Monday night for dinner at the upscale Central on Pennsylvania Avenue. A black SUV, presumably waiting for Emanuel, was parked in front of the restaurant.

The dinner is sure to raise some eyebrows. Democrats fall just short of a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, and the Obama administration is likely to look for Collins’s vote on a host of issues.

The pair was spotted at a table in the back of Central. Collins, one of only three GOP senators who supported President Obama’s stimulus package, was already there with an unidentified male when Emanuel arrived. He asked, “Are you guys kissing back here?”

myrenovations on February 25, 2009 at 6:51 PM

I’ll soon take all my troubles over to Obama Rue
You know The One with the never ending Hope and Change shtick
He’s got a pad down on Pennsylvania avenue
He’ll be passin’ out little bottles of Obama Potion Number Nine

I’ll tell him that I’m having trouble with my mortgage payments
It’s gotten even worse in these last few weeks
He’ll kiss me on the cheek and he’ll made a magic sign
He’ll say “What you need is Obama Potion Number Nine”

He’ll turn around and gave me a wink
He’ll say “I’m gonna have my Michelle make it up right here in the White House sink”
It’ll smell like Chicago, it’ll look like socialist ink
I’ll hold my nose, I’ll close my eyes, I’ll take a drink

I won’t know if it is day or night
I’ll start grabbin’ everyone else’s money that is in sight
But when there’s nothin’ left to grab
It’ll break my little bottle of Obama Potion Number Nine

Can anybody recommend a versatile, easy-to-maintain gun for a newbie survivalist / freedom fighter? Just in case, I mean.

joe_doufu on February 25, 2009 at 6:45 PM

Glock is a great gun but personally I prefer the Springfield XD series. I own both and XD 9mm compact and an XD 9mm subcompact and love the way the feel, fire and carry. But of course it’s a matter of preference. You should see how they feel and fire then make your choice.

Good luck.

How much will that “down payment” end up ballooning to? $2 trillion? $3 trillion?

Before or after we switch to the new Obama coin of the realm?

Boy are people ever going to be pissed when the sober up and see what they woke up with.

anyone ever been to a VA hospital? if you get a chance, go, take a nice, long look around. that’s the US health care system in 10 yrs if this sh!t doesn’t stop.

every day that goes by, i think to myself….”this can’t be happening”

this guy is raping our country. i truly think he’s the antichrist.

sandlin71 on February 25, 2009 at 7:03 PM

This health care plan makes me sick.

It will certainly make you patient.
There has to be some good business opportunity somewhere in there catering to people in long lines.

Obama is in a spending hurry to get this all in before any one has a real chance to complain loudly. He obviously has no clue as to how he is actually going to spend it. Once the spending authorization is in place, he can do whatever he wants. He has paid off all the lobbyists and those who got him elected in the ‘stimulus’ bill. When taxes are raised later to pay for everything and the complaints start coming in, he can ‘crack down’ on the troublemakers. Opposition will be kicked off of Air Force One, press conferences, and photo ops. If that doesn’t work, then the FCC and congress will move in.

OT. Good news. A major drug bust on a Mexican cartel and Holder uses the opportunity to promote another assault weapons ban.

If I had told you before the election that Obama would give a speech on fiscal responsibility then ask for over trillion in new spending the next day 2 weeks after $800 billion in spending with a bill no one read you would have laughed at me.

Everyone around here is out of 9 mm, but I have found a couple of cases of 45 ACP’s. There are no 357’s here, but I have seen some 38’s and 44 specials. Slim pickens.

And when the ammo runs out remember a well shot arrow is recycled to drive the environmentalist crazy.

I have never in all my long years witnessed such a bold faced liar as Obama, he stood up there last night and said he would go line by line on this budget to make sure there was no wastful spending in it. HELLO!!!! it’s all wasteful spending. Never liked him from the first time I saw him, reeks dishonesty. I guess the only thing that can save this great country is another civil war and God’s blessing. So sad:(

concernedsenior on February 25, 2009 at 7:13 PM

It is like the money is not even real to them.

I think that some people say they are willing to pay more taxes, but what that usually means is that they are ready for someone else to pay more taxes. That and liberals assume that once these taxes are paid, health care will be free so they will come out ahead. The morons.

It’s Wed. so today the Prez must be pretending to be Reagan. I’m just waiting for the flannel shirt and boots.

Lemme know when James Buchanan gets added to the rotation.

moxie_neanderthal on February 25, 2009 at 7:20 PM

Obama would pay for the expansion by trimming tax breaks for the wealthy and tightening payments to insurers, hospitals and physicians, according to a senior administration official.

Hey, anyone want to invest years of time in Med School and internships, and gazillions in personal education dollars to become a doctor? It’s almost as rewarding a career as being a community organizer! We’re sure to attract nothing but the best, right?

Buy Danish on February 25, 2009 at 7:32 PM

How in the hell can he spend like this and then the next week say he is going to cut the deficit???? What in the hell is wrong with this country that anyone would actually buy this???

It is amazing and scary as hell to me that everyone is willing to give him a chance to be fair??????????????? What??? Have we collectively lost our flipping minds???? Then he wants more money just in a bank to show good faith about health care???

I seriously am starting to doubt people’s sanity.

momof2 on February 25, 2009 at 7:34 PM

Id like to know when the hell the government is going to start sacrificing?

I dont see Nancy or Diane Feinstein flying coach across country, I dont see them giving up the new cars or helicopters or having fancy parties. I am sick of eating in, not shopping and paying my bills, while Congress and Obarfo dont pay theirs.

becki51758 on February 25, 2009 at 7:36 PM

Trillions on trillions. These idiots are driving us straight to third world status.

Is this really what you hope-n-change believers wanted?
