Santelli: The White House sort of made a veiled threat against me, didn’t it?

posted at 6:09 pm on February 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

I don’t know what’s worse, the possibility that he’s making this accusation in good faith or that he isn’t. Watch the clip of Gibbs calling him out for his rant. Clearly, all he means is that if Santelli’s rich and lives in a mansion then he can’t be expected to understand the problems of the average homeowner who (supposedly) needs help from Obama’s mortgage plan. The left pulls this faux-victim garbage all the time, drawing sinister insinuations from conservative rhetoric when obviously none are intended. Sad that this guy would stoop to the same thing.

Update (Ed): We talked about this on my show today, and it’s ridiculous. Santelli has a legitimate complaint about Gibbs using a class warfare attack against him with that comment, but in no way was Gibbs threatening Santelli. It would be nice if the Right didn’t mimic the worst habits of the Left, as Allahpundit says, especially on paranoid-victimization routines.

Was Gibbs’ comment “unpresidential”? Yes, but he was asked to respond to Santelli, and he did, more or less in campaign mode. The comment from Gibbs didn’t come without prompting from the press.

I think he’s referring to the fact that Gibbs said “we don’t know where he lives, yet”

Why is the 0bama administration going after private citizens for expressing their views? Thuggery.

cjs1943 on February 24, 2009 at 6:16 PM

I agree that Gibbs wasn’t saying that, although it seems pretty, ahem, nuanced to call out Santelli for thinking so. A private American citizen was attacked from the podium of the White House Press Secretary.

The fact that the comment was made about where he lives,,,it could be taken two ways,,,,however,,,,after watching the antics pulled on Joe the Plumber and Gov Palin and other “enemies of the state”, I would probably also interpet as a threat. Audits will follow.

Wait. Let’s simplify this very complex problem a little bit. Instead of a half million dollar mansion, lets make it a car….no wait.. new cars are expensive too.

So let’s make it a used car. Someone making payments on their car doesn’t understand the difficulties someone else has when their car gets towed for non payment?

genso on February 24, 2009 at 6:22 PM

Was there a threat specifically implied by Gibbs’ comments? No.

Is there a threat implied by the historical behavior of Team O and its followers? Absolutely.

I’m surprised there haven’t been leaks about Rick Santelli’s marriage history or past tax filings or the terms of his own mortgage yet.

Further, it’s naive to think that White House’s don’t use some of the unique investigative resources to which they have access for political ends. It’s happened in every white house in modern history.

Robert_Paulson on February 24, 2009 at 6:23 PM

I don’t think the White House meant anything by the “we don’t know where he lives” comment but imagine if you will, one of Bush’s press secretaries said that about a reporter who had gone on a huge tirade against some White House policy.

Heads would be spinning, every reporter would be demanding the public denounciation and firing of said press secretary and that would be the Democrats next rallying cry; “Republicans are specifically targeting the opposition which is exercising the highest form of PATRIOTISM!”

We endured how many years of the slightest comment, regardless of intent being ballooned hugely out of proportion, anything any Republican did painted the entire party (Macaca?, Trent Lott being forced to resign over BIRTHDAY comments), and the entire party being portrayed as a bunch of racist, bigot, homophobe, redneck idiots.

So, while, yeah, I don’t really think anything sinister was being implied, a huge part of me wants to take the comment and cram it down the left’s teeth.

Sarjex on February 24, 2009 at 6:23 PM

I think Gibbs probably was implying that Santelli was a cartoon character, rich fat-cat capitalist and therefore — in our New World Order — evil beyond redemption, rather than issuing a veiled threat against him.
But that doesn’t make it any less pernicious. This treatment echoes back to the attacks on Joe the Plumber. The Obama Administration tries to destroy the credibility of any citizen who dares to ask uncomfortable questions, rather than address the question as posed.
It is a tactic that is designed to have a chilling effect on the masses who may formulate uncomfortable questions.

cruadin on February 24, 2009 at 6:23 PM

Yeah, that’s the 2-second snippet from the audio that we should have a discussion about. Forget that whole mortgage thing. Forget freedom of the press. Let’s talk about whether Rick Santelli is properly upset about Gibbs’ house comment. We’ll bring that dirty animal down to his knees. Hey, at least it’s a break from the snide remarks about how Santelli’s a media whore.

If only. What was he doing addressing Santelli in the first place? They’re supposed to be above that stuff.

Esthier on February 24, 2009 at 6:30 PM

BTW, the threat is not necessarily the home comment, it’s being attacked by the President through his proxy in an attempt to intimidate him.

Oh. That’s not the way it works huh? Call Howie Carr and ask him how it works. Ask him how the Department of Revenue and IRS were used to intimidate him.

Want more examples? I know people who were directly intimidated by the the full power of the US Government becuase they were outspoken and highly visible critics of unpopular Federal law in Boston. First were phone calls, wire taps and surveillance. Then IRS/DOR audits. Then threats of taking away the persons children. Then, when all that didn’t work they used the Grand Jury system… Trust me. If you don’t think such things happen in Dem Admins in the USA you’re not paying attention to what just happened to innocent people like Joe the Plumber. That is not the exception with Dems. That’s the rule.

TheBigOldDog on February 24, 2009 at 6:31 PM

A private American citizen was attacked from the podium of the White House Press Secretary.

That private citizen’s televised rant had been touted at the top of Drudge for the entire day before. It’s not like Gibbs picked him out of the phone book. And what makes it an “attack”? He told him to read the plan.

TheBigOldDog on February 24, 2009 at 6:33 PM

Get off the high horse AP… Gibbs is the same thug who made a major campaign issue of McCain’s “house” statement.

And now we’re going to give him the benefit of doubt?

CHRIS WALLACE: So he’s running for president, to talk about how many houses John McCain has?

ROBERT GIBBS: Well, somebody’s got to talk about how many houses John McCain has, because he either forgot how many he has, misplaced the keys to those houses, or he just wasn’t being truthful with those reporters.

That answer illuminates whether or not you’re in touch with that family in Youngstown, Ohio or Scranton that’s struggling to make that mortgage payment just this month. And I think you’re out of touch if you have seven houses and don’t even remember it or can’t even admit it.

I could care less what Gibbs’ intentions were… He said it. And if Santelli wants to run with it (aided by the kook Liddy), good for him.

Payback is a bi**h.

hawkdriver on February 24, 2009 at 6:36 PM

Uh, he’s not stooping to anything, Gibbs said: “We don’t know where he lives, yet.” Santelli says a lot more than pointing out that this IS a veiled threat and he isn’t playing victim here. I’ve heard him say many times: “This isn’t about me”. It’s about America, BUT, if he couldn’t relate to the regular guy then he wouldn’t have struck such a deep cord with the American people.
Come to think of it…this is a pattern with the Obama ‘administration’. They have a penchant for veiled threats, but I guess that’s ok and we shouldn’t STOOP to point them out.

If Nixon or someone other presidents before him had made that statement, believe me, the person would be crapping their pants.

Bottom line: With the kind of power the president has, he shouldn’t be singling out private citizens like that; even if it’s meant innocently, there shouldn’t be even a possible interpretation of a threat coming from the White House.

OK,, if Santelli, and others like him can never understand hardship just because they’re rich,,, then how in the world can the rich in congress and other parts of government understand hardship either???
We can play this game forever,, maybe only the poor and tired should be allowed to make laws for the poor and tired,, then only rich conservatives should be allowed to make laws for rich conservatives,, and middle class redheads only make policies that affect middle class red heads.
Giibbs was making a threat, as close to a threat as he could while being able to say he wasn’t making a threat. When someone says “We know or don’t know where you live” in any sense of the word,, that means “We are watching you and we can find you!”

Clearly, all he means is that if Santelli’s rich and lives in a mansion then he can’t be expected to understand the problems of the average homeowner who (supposedly) needs help from Obama’s mortgage plan.

Clear to you, maybe. I was thinking it was possibly in reference to how many homes have been foreclosed on, and perhaps Santelli doesn’t live in an area where that has been happening much.

Would you not agree that that could be just as good an explanation? Because it is what occurred to me.

And the reason I thought of that reason was to try to give Gibbs at least a little benefit of the doubt.

In any case, if we’re going to decide what Gibbs “clearly” meant, then I think my idea of what he meant is at least as likely as yours.

The main point, of course, is that the President and/or his lackeys have no business voicing grudges and peevishness over what reporters, cable news people, or Joe the Plumber, or any of the other lowly peon “chattering classes” say in their exercise of free speech.

And it wasn’t lost on me, either, that Gibb’s saying this was pretty much the okay for others to dig into Santelli’s past, just like they always do. Including where Santelli lives.

I’m getting pretty sick of this President and his representatives treating American citizens with contempt, and singling them out by name to do so.

It’s unpresidential, and it’s dangerous to the individuals singled out.

genso on February 24, 2009 at 6:50 PM

During the campaign, I thought Gibbs was pretty effective because he really stayed on message.

Now I can see that he is just shockingly stupid.

Somebody puts the words on paper, and he says em, come hell or high water, and over and over again. He stays on message because he couldn’t in his wildest dreams come up with a message on his own.

When he’s up there in front of reporters, he must feel like the world is spinning a million miles an hour.

I’ve also heard the other traders referred to as creeps and “goons.” In fact one those lovely libs was a guest on Ed’s show today. These guys are support staff and probably don’t make millions, but for a lib the fact that they work in trading means they’re disgusting thugs.

Baldi, is right. It isn’t presidential to go after the press or private citizens. It’s petty and childish. But then, that’s pretty much what I expected after Nov. 4th. Chicago thugs will keep the office in the gutter. They don’t know anything else.

Clearly, all he means is that if Santelli’s rich and lives in a mansion then he can’t be expected to understand the problems of the average homeowner who (supposedly) needs help from Obama’s mortgage plan.

Clear to you maybe, but I took it just the way Santelli did when I saw it originally. After the way they treated Joe the Plumber, Santelli at least has reason to wonder.

Christian Conservative on February 24, 2009 at 6:53 PM

Look…Gibbs was either intimidating Santelli or belittling him. Is either one better than the other?

genso on February 24, 2009 at 6:50 PM

And even if, “if” it was neither it is still the lefts go-to game of class warfare coming right from the Press Sec. Oh, don’t you complain if you have a big house that you’re keeping the payments up on.

Cody1991 on February 24, 2009 at 6:53 PM

Yeah, I agree. I’d much rather listen to Santelli and Kudlow, not because of their politics but because they are unabashed capitalists. The real ranter there is Cramer.

genso on February 24, 2009 at 6:56 PM

Go back to the Kudlow/Santelli video from the other day.

Kudlow: Rick this is one of the worst attacks i have ever seen on the media by the President or the white House…I don’t like this one bit….

Santelli: I have ranted for years, Anybody who has seen CNBC knows I am impassioned about anything. You’ll never see anybody get more excited about CPI than Rick Santelli. Why is this rant over the last 14 years a such big deal or different from the others? Because we hit a nerve….

TheBigOldDog on February 24, 2009 at 7:00 PM

The truly pathetic part is that Obama has a history of fixing his political opponents. Santelli has every reason to claim a threat was implied.

Indeed.

I will point out that all three of those men spent years in the world of money. They’ve done more than report on it.

flyfisher on February 24, 2009 at 7:01 PM

That’s your opinion, but who the hell is gibbs to determine whether or not Santelli did his job with the proper decorum? And why should that have any bearing on how the white house reacts?

Ronnie on February 24, 2009 at 6:44 PM

I’m certainly not defending Gibbs.

Nah, Jim Kramer never goes off like Santelli.

flyfisher on February 24, 2009 at 6:45 PM

But that’s Kramer’s shtick…And that isn’t really the same thing.

JetBoy on February 24, 2009 at 7:02 PM

Every time I see Gibbs, I can’t help but think, “Tweety Bird”.

Buford Gooch on February 24, 2009 at 7:02 PM

Trust me when I say that we mean no harm whatsoever against Santelli or his associates or his mother or father or his wife or his children or his pets or his church or his mistress if we can find one.

Santelli was talking last night about being a floor trader trading CD futures during the S&L meltdown. He’s been in the pits and knows options and derivatives as much as anyone.

genso on February 24, 2009 at 6:56 PM

Can’t handle Cramer, but Kudlow and Santelli are fine with me.

I find it not only odd but incredibly disturbing that the Admin. and their lackeys go after private citizens as they do. A president should be focused on other things. Perhaps it has something to do with that malignant narcissism thing. ;)

Ummm, Santelli’s rant was no different in passion or tone from his other rants. So, you might say, it’s his daily shtick.

It seems to me your slip is showing.

Gibbs went out there and questioned and ridiculed a private citizen of the United States. When you add in the nasty snipes at Hannity, Limbaugh, and the lipstick on a pig Palin comment, you get a established pattern of needing to smear any person who brings up questions about Obama. It is inappropriate and low-class to get down in the gutter and attack the way the Obama administration does. Also, the AP issue with Palin: she ignited a spark in people that I have never seen in my life. When she came out at the introduction, I broke down and cried. I felt the most amazing sense of pride and connection to a politician that I have never experienced. She connected with people because she is like us and can understand our daily struggles. Some people may not like the Joe Sixpack appeal, but I do.

I seriously don’t think they can help themselves. If they weren’t intimidating or belittling, then their skirt blew up and revealed a bit more about them than they would like.

genso on February 24, 2009 at 7:07 PM

I’m just glad that the whole Santelli rant continues to have legs and gets air time.

The longer it’s out there, folks will talk about it, the momentum continues.

I HOPE it upsets the Prez and his cronies on a daily basis.

It certainly shines a brighter light on the functioning of the program going forward.

Kudlow: This is an unprecedented White House assault on a member of the media in good standing. You are a veteran. You have been doing this for years. And, as I said earlier, I can’t recall anything like this…There’s an issue here – there’s a freedom of the press issue. There’s also a respect issue. There’s also a bullying issue…do you feel that the White House has the right to start bullying members – it can be you today, me tomorrow. It can be someone on Fox News, it can be NBC news, it can be anybody. Does this mean this is how this White House in the Obama presidency is going to react to criticism from the media? Is this a signal of things to come with the worst press relations we’ve seen in our lifetime?

Santelli: Well I certainly hope not…whom I want [him] to succeed as badly as the any of the other 300 million Americans…

TheBigOldDog on February 24, 2009 at 7:11 PM

It wasn’t a threat, Rick. It was a promise.
