Open thread: Synthesis of Jesus, Lincoln, Reagan, and FDR to address nation; Update: Churchill, too
posted at 8:25 pm on February 24, 2009 by Allahpundit
9 p.m. ET everywhere. Obama should last about an hour, then Jindal takes over for 15 minutes. Here’s my Twitter prediction of what Jindal would say from early this afternoon, and here’s the excerpt of his speech released for publication a little while ago. How’d I do?
Compare and contrast the big finish to his rebuttal…
“A few weeks ago, the President warned that our nation is facing a crisis that he said ‘we may not be able to reverse.’ Our troubles are real, to be sure. But don’t let anyone tell you that we cannot recover – or that America’s best days are behind her.”
…with the key passage to the speech he’s rebutting. Hmmm:
But while our economy may be weakened and our confidence shaken; though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, tonight I want every American to know this: We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before.
The boss has already provided the Cliff’s Notes version of The One’s speech in case you don’t feel like watching. Or, if you prefer a longer treatment, try the AP’s report from the future on an address that hasn’t been delivered yet. Sounds like it was a smash. Exit question: Does the fact that the very first “Jindal is a Muslim” rumors are starting to swirl mean he’s officially arrived on the national stage?
Update: Politico helpfully prepares Jindal for the inevitable “you reeked” backlash.
Update: I forgot Churchill in the headline, but Chris Matthews didn’t. Follow the link for Buchanan’s retort.

From the Headlines, a two-page article from a neat grammarian and her husband. Her name is Patricia O’Connor. She hosts a great daily blog, grammarphobia.com. She wrote Woe is I.
Anyway, they wrote a NYT article today giving Obama some advice on his pronouns. He has his problems. And for all the yacking about his Ivy League ed, I’m not impressed with a guy who can’t choose the correct pronoun in easy situations. He screws things up all the time.
It’s worth the time.

I’m so nostalgic for the days when I thought Obama wouldn’t really do all the things he said he would.
I read his website and studied up on everything he said, and tried to warn people. Then, when he was elected, I convinced myself that cooler heads would prevail in the Congress, and all this crapola wouldn’t come to pass.
But it is. Bye, bye, Miss American Pie.
Alana on February 24, 2009 at 11:36 PM
Actually, though, I would agree with what Dick Morris was saying during the primaries. She had to be kept from winning. She’s too vindictive and power mad. Talk about using the state apparatus to settle scores…she’d be doing it in spades.

One hour can be completely boiled down to:
“I am going to address the deficit I both inherited and helped create by first making it far far bigger.”
Chuck Schick on February 24, 2009 at 11:37 PM
Are we going to have the 3 vote for this like the did the Mt. Porkulus. If we can’t get the 3 dissenters on board we are screwed.
The One so far has spent 36 billion dollars a day since he’s been in office. That is sad and they complained about Bush. Now all this spening is what is going to save us. What a bummer.

I have an issue -big one- on the part of the speech where he said that the US does not torture terrorists. Not to mention all the military obvious references on cutting and putting away.
I believe dozens of international phone calls were made tonight and yes, WE are the joke of the world.
Well, who’s torturing who?
ProudPalinFan on February 24, 2009 at 11:39 PM
Because if there’s anything Obama’s proven so far is that his promises mean exactly jack and shi!t.

Let’s check out Obama’s popularity when inflation starts to gallop. People think it’s bad now…
ddrintn on February 24, 2009 at 11:40 PM
I’ll go read it. Mr. Obama has this knack of going southern preacher when he comes down south. I resent that since he hasn’t spent enough time down here to acquire the speech pattern. It’s condescending.
Cindy Munford on February 24, 2009 at 11:40 PM
Cloward and Piven soon implemented the plan, recruiting black militants to crash welfare offices with violent demands for benefits. The strategy was especially effective in New York City. According to Sol Stern of City Journal, as quoted in DiscoverTheNetworks.org, they “succeeded beyond [their] wildest dreams…From 1965 to 1974, the number of single-parent households on welfare soared from 4.3 million to 10.8 million, despite mostly flush economic times. By the early 1970s, one person was on the welfare rolls in New York City for every two working in the city’s private economy.” New York City declared bankruptcy in 1975 as a result, a stunning victory for what became known as the Cloward-Piven Strategy.
It is difficult to swallow the notion that forcing people onto welfare rolls in order to destroy the welfare system was actually a deliberate strategy conceived by Americans, but this is what happened, and the fractured families, runaway crime, poverty and misery associated with the burgeoning welfare state can be linked directly to it.
Their next target was voting. According to Horowitz, the nationwide voter registration group, Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, (ACORN), as well as Project Vote and Human SERVE, were all founded by Cloward and Piven or their associates. These groups also receive significant funding from George Soros’ Open Society Institute. Not coincidentally, Soros groups also provided significant support to the umbrella organization, the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, which pushed the latest immigration abomination thankfully defeated last week.

I agree with the posters who interpreted the speech as juvenile- it seemed to me that he stuck his big ears to the wind and listened for what the unwashed masses wanted to hear. CURING CANCER?? Is there anything this messiah can’t bring to us? It wasn’t a well crafted speech, it was a laundry list of everything he thought might buy him a few more support points.

With the MSM fawning over their Messiah, our own side slamming Jindal and the total ignorance of well over half of America…
WE’RE F-’d!!!
Obama is a liar, he’s a radical far left Socialist, he hates a proud America, he’s not real fond of white people, the rich or any sucessful person or business. He lies with total freedom, he looks to surpress any descent by killing Talk Radio and our ability to put pressure on our Representatives. Our lives of hard work and smart choices, good planning and living within our means is shown to be stupid. In his world view we should have been on welfare waiting for the gobmit cheese and checks. We should have relied on the gobmit to provide womb to tomb care and allowed our children to be indoctranated at the local gobmit skool.(/sarc) His lies and the fact that most Americans believe this crap is a sign of our deepening dependance on gobmit, and not on personal responsibility.
Jindal was not horrible, his message IS correct. The Messiah and his cult of followers are not the answers to our future, they are not the answer to our needs… They are the very face of evil, of the destruction of the American way of life… The end of reward for work, the end of morals as a bases for decisions, the end of values for human life, security and a strong and proud Military. Jindal was right that personal responsibility and the hard working, do it alone American spirit is the answer, not gobmit. Our pundits and so called Conservative comentators are IDIOTS AND TRAITORS to our future and America to praise The Messiah against the moral standings of freedom and The Constitution that Jindal expresses. Are we now, at this moment, at this junction, at this crossroads, going to embrace the Jindal vision, the Conservative vision of America… A proud, mighty, moral Country, with personal rights and freedoms, where hard work and effort are encouraged and rewarded… Or will we simply fold up our values, bow to The Messiah and fall in lock step with the cult of cradle to grave sameness… Where the morons and idiots that make poor choices, live lives of depravity, drugs, gangs, crime, welfare, abortion and moral decay are said to be the winners and the ones of value. The One and his followers have a strangle hold on the MSM, the Great Leader has spoken from on high, he will cure Cancer, calm the tides, make the Sun come out and make all the lazy, uninspired, deadbeats the new rulers of America.
Well freinds, if that’s the kind of America you want, go for it… As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord, we will continue to live a moral, ethical life… We will support Conservatives, speak out against the far left and The Messiah’s radical agenda… We will not lose faith in a just and strong Military, in our desire for personal freedoms, The Constitution and a proud America of work, sucess and reward.
For those of you that scoff at Jindal or Palin or heck, ANY Conservative, if you believe in The Messiah, if you want a gobmit handout, or welfare, or secured mortgage, or Socialized health care, I have a few words for you…

ANTI-AMERICAN

DeathToMediaHacks on February 25, 2009 at 8:01 AM
Dude, let it go, at least in your postings here on HA. There are three types of conservatives on this issue.
1. Those who believe these document non-disclosures are non issues since these cases keep getting thrown out. (This is the majority by the way.)
2. Those who believe it is an issue, and are continuing to bring this up.
3. And those who are quietly sitting back to see what happens, open to contemplating the implications if this is true, but not quite believing this is over either.
So when you are posting these points originally raised by Philip Berg, over and over, you are annoying the first group, who place this in the same realm as trutherism, which would include our hosts, Allah, Ed and Michelle. They do not wish their sites to become loaded down with the same kind of snarky comments that we’ve blasted the moonbat sites for allowing.
You’re of course are preaching to the choir of the second group, but this also makes it darned difficult for the third group to be taken seriously when they do comment.
i.e. If you’ve been tracking things, WND has been reporting fairly routinely on the Alan Keyes lawsuit, and know that Occidental was just ordered to supply transcripts. Not sure where things stand with that one as of this second, but it is far better to wait and see what happens before really bringing it forward into discussions.

Yes, I’m talking about you and your kind… The hate America crowd, the blame America for all the ill’s of the World crowd… The it’s Bush’s fault crowd… Your Messiah is going to calm the oceans and cure Cnacer and heal all the wounds of a hated America abroad… Welfare for ALL, work for NONE… Checks to non-producers, penalties for sucess… handouts and bailouts for failure and higher taxes and regulations and punishment for the producers…
That’s the America you want??? Well your getting it with spades… The Messiah and his cult, of which your a part, will not be happy till the rich are impoverished, the middle class is the welfare class, the Government controls all speech, removes guns, kills talk radio, surpresses freedoms and allows terriorist to go free and attack our soil once again… It’s your now, your control, your mess.
Own it… Own the destruction of America, of hard work, of personal responsibility… Pay for the health care, the welfare , the union thugs… Go for it…

It was EERIE watching the thing backwards at speed… the cadence of his left-right looks and affectations… the cadence of Pelosi and Biden standing and sitting and applauding… the cadence of the cuts to the audience ovations… it REALLY looked like a cultish “beloved leader” speech from the 1930s…. then I watched it forward, at normal speed, and it was even scarier.

The strongest part of the speech was the Education segment.
The rest of the speech was a hollow re-hash of previous things Obama has said. The speech was not very inspiring.
For the most part all I heard was huge spending to come for education, health care and energy. All the time cutting the deficit in half.
The only way that is possible is huge tax and other fee increases.
It is a formula for a continuing economic recession/depression.
The stock market will continue to fall.

And did Obama forget to acknowledge the soldier or marine standing next to Michelle?

Mark Garnett: Wow, that was fantastic. Very well put. I couldn’t agree w/ you more. The radical libs, and all the drones that support them blindly, OWN the destruction of the greatest country the world has ever known. I pray to my soul that we will rise up and conquer this despicable evil.
I hope and pray my 12 year old son, and his children, don’t live in a Socialist HELLHOLE. I simply cannot believe there are so many friggin’ idiots that believe the tripe that is coming out of The Empty Suit, and don’t examine FACTS. In a way, I hope inflation reaches Jimmy Carter proportions so that young people (20s/30s) KNOW what it’s like to live w/ 20%+ interest rates. Those days are nothing more than an old black & white movie to them…one that doesn’t really affect them. I hope they are all hit hard. Hard enough for a concusional head banging wake up call. Heavenly Father, please watch over us….
Screw this “historial” presidency.

Any time now, they will post the viewership of his primetime speech on all three networks and a few cable channels.
NOT!
And I’ll tell you why. It will reveal the embarrashingly dismal number (2 millions? even less?) that show President Obama lost his drawing power, unlike Candidate Obama.
Candidate Obama lets people project their own hope onto a personna. President Obama sux, that’s why.

He’s passionate. It’s good to be passionate about your cause.
Especially when it is just & true.
People need to get worked up over the pulling of the wool over the American Public’s eyes.
It’s something to be extremely pi$$ed off & offended about.
Conservatives are not the only angry ones around.
Apathy is the killer here.
Americans need to get stirred up again over this insanity-which is the fault of most politicians-Left & Right.
I only watched 10 min of Obama’s speech & it was all I could stand.
He said NOTHING. He is pandering to fools.
I will not be lied & pandered to.
The devil is in the details & he wants to gloss them over!
Congress-all of them- need to be gotten totally rid of.
We need the passion of Revolution like in 1776 to engulf the hearts of our sane countrymen.
Let’s roll folks.
I am totally ready to get busy & up in political faces.

33 untruths. 5 outright lies. 17 insinuations of blame. What a guy! I can’t believe this POS was elected to lead this country. I really can’t believe… if he gets thru the 2012 election he’ll be president for the rest of most of our lives. With global warming, how soon before Canada has milder winters? Griz on February 25, 2009 at 2:55 AM
It’s unbelievable. Lying politicians are common. But this is way beyond that. Obama is a sitting President who blatently lies about our entire economy, out national and financial situation, about those who don’t agree with him and does so with impunity on national and international media, seen by tens of millions at a time. He is obscene.

Yeah, I heard a clip of some MSM ditz calling the speech “a homerun, touchdown and a three-pointer”. You really can’t reach such stupidity. It’s no use; the only thing that will turn the tide is to let Obama’s policies take effect.
ddrintn on February 25, 2009 at 5:12 PM
^ It seems it wasn’t an MSM ditz, but Barbara Boxer. Not much difference, really.

Chuck SWarnichick
“One hour can be completely boiled down to:
“I am going to address the deficit I both inherited and helped create by first making it far far bigger.””
True, but here’s his “plausible deniability” for his claim he “inherited” this deficit and DID NOT help create it!
See, its like this, Obama’s not responsible for any of the deficit cuz for the last 4 years as a US Senator he didn’t do his Senator job!
Its like telling your boss that your not responsible for “X”, cuz you never bothered to show up for work over the last 4 years.
Oh and then ask for a promotion!
Warning
Do not try this at work unless your boss is a complete imbecile.
