Open thread: Synthesis of Jesus, Lincoln, Reagan, and FDR to address nation; Update: Churchill, too

posted at 8:25 pm on February 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

9 p.m. ET everywhere. Obama should last about an hour, then Jindal takes over for 15 minutes. Here’s my Twitter prediction of what Jindal would say from early this afternoon, and here’s the excerpt of his speech released for publication a little while ago. How’d I do?

Compare and contrast the big finish to his rebuttal…

“A few weeks ago, the President warned that our nation is facing a crisis that he said ‘we may not be able to reverse.’ Our troubles are real, to be sure. But don’t let anyone tell you that we cannot recover – or that America’s best days are behind her.”

…with the key passage to the speech he’s rebutting. Hmmm:

But while our economy may be weakened and our confidence shaken; though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, tonight I want every American to know this: We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before.

The boss has already provided the Cliff’s Notes version of The One’s speech in case you don’t feel like watching. Or, if you prefer a longer treatment, try the AP’s report from the future on an address that hasn’t been delivered yet. Sounds like it was a smash. Exit question: Does the fact that the very first “Jindal is a Muslim” rumors are starting to swirl mean he’s officially arrived on the national stage?

Update: Politico helpfully prepares Jindal for the inevitable “you reeked” backlash.

Update: I forgot Churchill in the headline, but Chris Matthews didn’t. Follow the link for Buchanan’s retort.

Blowback

I’ve been saying that about Palin for months everytime she’s ripped for being too stupid. You can learn knowledge, but you can’t learn charisma.

davek70 on February 24, 2009 at 11:05 PM

We’ve lost the element of surprize with Palin. The media sucessfully convinced most Americans she is a nut. I don’t know how she can overcome that. I hope she can. Reagan overcame a lot of that but wow no one was trashed like Palin was. I don’t know how she gets her reputation back.

I guess the big O will have to give these State of the Stimulus speeches every week or so!

JellyToast on February 24, 2009 at 11:08 PM

I wouldn’t worry too much about Jindal or Palin or anyone else. 2012 will be about Obama. If he gets lucky and somehow the economy recovers, and the Middle East doesn’t descend into chaos, he’ll get re-elected regardless of the Republican candidate. If unemployment is around 10% and inflation has kicked in, and the market is not recovering, and the Middle East is chaos, bye-bye Obama and welcome Gov. Whoever (R).

By (if she wants to run) being herself and running in her own campaign. Also, 4 years of Obama won’t hurt. He’s lost the element of surprise as well.

ddrintn on February 24, 2009 at 11:09 PM

But he is going to cure cancer.

Yeah, just like Kerry/Edwards claimed dems would make parapolegics walk again. All they have to do is be well-intentioned… they don’t have to show actual results on their promises.

ErinF on February 24, 2009 at 11:09 PM

I still can’t believe that after 4 years Americans will not be sick of Obama’s arrogant smirk. I think after a while the cadence of his speech will be like nails on a chaulk board. Depends on the economy. We will see.

But Jindal looked like a real person, even with his flaws. People like that. Most people just want someone they like and Jindal is likeable. It’s not like my beloved Bush was a great speaker. But he was real.

Jindal in comparison to Obama was smart, but not impressed with himself. I thought I would vomit watching Obama signing autographs and taking forever to leave the hall.

Elisa on February 24, 2009 at 11:10 PM

Palin believes in fiscal responsibility, balanced budgets and defending American and the Constitution with every breath she takes.

If that makes her ‘nuts’ I hope millions join her in the lunatic asylum.

technopeasant on February 24, 2009 at 11:10 PM

Why not stick with taking a shot whenever the filthy liar uses the personal pronouns? Never have I seen a more arrogant bastard who talks as if he is running the US government single-handedly while jetting around the nation like some sort of rock star on perpetual tour.

A-f’inng-men! This guy is nothing more than an arrogant P****. “I will”???? No, Barry. “We will” as in you work for us, thus you are acting on our behalf (although not all of us agree). “I will send my budget”? No! THE Budget will be sent. “I’ve asked my vice president”. Moron! YOU don’t have a Vice President. THE COUNTRY has a Vice President. So he is THE Vice President, not YOUR Vice President.

Gawd! And I thought Clinton was the height of narcissim.

Fed45 on February 24, 2009 at 11:10 PM

I’m not worried about Jindal. I have the feeling he will be very vocal over the next four years.

Me either.

Reagan overcame a lot of that but wow no one was trashed like Palin was. I don’t know how she gets her reputation back.

Not by retreating like DQ. If Obama’s administration is unsuccessful, a lot of the rehab will be done.

So after we get all of these free goodies, and the possibility of getting a check in the mail. He lowers the taxes for 95% of the working families. Who is left with the bill. There is no way only 5% of Americans can pay for this. Unless all his hollywood friends are going to donate to the national budget.

Brat4life on February 24, 2009 at 11:11 PM

Y’all can read my sig line, but hey it is true…I wiped my kid’s rear end a while ago before coming here, and definitely my girl Sarah would’ve taken care of Obama the same way I took care of that baby wipe.

I spent my evening in the basement, hunkered down watched the whole thing; I am not so into Jindal because I really don’t know the guy but he gives me the softie “Juan” vibe.

Sorry guys hate to break it to ya. If the RNC had any part in kicking Sarah off the map for Bobby Jindal, I regret we will have four more years of this insaneness. IF we get to make it past this.

Now fire away….*ducks*

ProudPalinFan on February 24, 2009 at 11:11 PM

Wrong. Palin’s teleprompter quit working for a bit during her RNC speech. She did damn well, and didn’t miss one step.

JellyToast on February 24, 2009 at 10:55 PM

Yep..From the Obama transcript…

That’s why — that’s why we will support — we will provide the support necessary for all young Americans to complete college and meet a new goal: By 2020, America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. That is a goal we can meet.

That’s a goal we can meet.

Now — now, I know that the price of tuition is higher than ever, which is why, if you are willing to volunteer in your neighborhood or give back to your community or serve your country, we will make sure that you can afford a higher education

I just think the bank scene is very compelling because you have all those lemmings willing to go bail out to Potter (Obama) for BS. It’s a message of hanging tough and looking to each other. Even if you “have doctor’s bills to pay.”

BuckeyeSam on February 24, 2009 at 11:12 PM

Okay. Obama will spend trillions on giving everyone free health care and free college. And he’ll give us magical clean green energy too! I feel so much more hopeful.

From reading the speech, that college won’t be free. You have to do “service.” This is what his website said before the election. Signing on for community service (approved, of course) in order to get a reduction in college costs.

It was gone over in great detail by a number of people, and I can’t remember everything about it now, but it didn’t augur well for colleges that refused to pony up, or some such; and some said it would increase tuition overall.

My problem is, of course, the idea of the approved services; i.e., more brainwashing, more little brownshirts.

Here’s the problem with Jindal. He was talking down to us as he marketed himself as a nicer conservative version of mini-Obama. That’s not what we’re in the mood for now…or ever. And if Jindal was a Rhodes scholar that’s certainly not anything to be happy about as a conservative.

We need to focus on doing everything we can right now to stop this idiot sock puppet and his handlers from doing even 1/8 of what he talked about in this speech. Beat your congress people and your state and local governments with sticks if necessary. Get after the media like Fox or Conservative pundits to really evaluate and nit pick it apart. We do need to scare people, not about the economy, but about this grand plan. We are looking at a combination of the Great Society and the New Deal. And it ain’t pretty.

Right now, I wonder how many people in the country really, really care. I’d say, give it time, but by then it may be too late.

ddrintn on February 24, 2009 at 11:24 PM

If that’s the worst thing we can say about her, that’s good. We are probably being protective, knowing that she will take heat for it. Overall I get a really good vibe from her. She strikes me as honest. There’s something you don’t get to say too often about a pol.

Cindy Munford on February 24, 2009 at 11:18 PM

I love her. I just hate when men and women parrot a usage that they pick up from morons trying to sound smarter than they are. She ought to hire a crack speech, grammar, and usage guru to follow her for a time and pick up on her mulligans. There’s actually a great business writing specialist in Seattle.

But you’re correct about the honesty. She’s American. She’s a leader. I saw someone write today that she doesn’t require a leader to be the smartest person in the roon. And that’s correct. We all have gifts. She’s a tough lady, and she has character and integrity and she’s smart enough. Not much esle is needed after that.

Agreed, I notice that the MSM continues to say that Republicans are the party of no without bring forward any of their own ideas. We (including MSM) know that isn’t true. Time for Mr. Steele to spend some money on advertising. I still don’t think they can go after the President until some of the shiny new is off.

Alana -I do remember Bush signing some autograghs, I believe it was State of the Union speech.

conmo on February 24, 2009 at 11:26 PM

Is that normal, for the president to sign autographs in such occasions?
Alana on February 24, 2009 at 11:24 PM

Yes, most President’s have done that as well as take photos.

The difference with Ogabe is that he just signs it “Yours Truly, God.”

We CAN NOT let them re-write history and the cause of this problem………..

……….. WE CAN NOT!!!

Seven Percent Solution on February 24, 2009 at 11:27 PM

Pres. Reagan had a really really bad debate with Carter first time out. The MSM talked like he was some doddering old fool that couldn’t possibly be CIC. Next time out he kicked @ss and took names. No looking back after that.

Cindy Munford on February 24, 2009 at 11:28 PM

not really. Although Thune is a good guy and is VERY conservative. Who knows if he would even think about running for higher office.

ousoonerfan15 on February 24, 2009 at 11:28 PM

It’s funny, a little over a year ago I was hoping that Obama would get the nomination, thinking he’d be easier to defeat.

ddrintn on February 24, 2009 at 11:28 PM

Now fire away….*ducks*

Ok, you just said you don’t know the guy. Well… get to know him, pay attention over the coming months, and I have the feeling you’ll change your mind. He’s a roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-your-hands-dirty kind of guy. Not a “just words” delegator like little hussein.

Just pay attention over the coming weeks and months.

ErinF on February 24, 2009 at 11:17 PM

Erinf,

I have a question…who propped Jindal to take the GOP official response? I thought that would’ve been handled by someone else.

Two things: One, I started to fall asleep towards the end of the speech, and two, the smirk on that biyatch Pelosi had a darn good Sealy spring on her seat cushion! Gosh he was not done talking on a bunch of segments and she just sprang up that seat and almost clapped on his face!!! (I took it as “Remember, that was MY idea!”)

petunia on February 24, 2009 at 11:29 PM

The president usually signs autographs after these joint session speeches. It’s a non-issue for me. Let’s stay focused on Obama driving our country over the cliff with his disastrous policy proposals.

common sensineer on February 24, 2009 at 11:29 PM

Michael Steele is comin up on Hannity. Hope he comes on strong cause all I got is change

conmo on February 24, 2009 at 11:30 PM

Steele is coming up. Wonder what he has to say. Now we have congress critters and Dems no less saying that there are earmarks in this bill. But oh we need them. I thought BO was all about no earmarks.

Obama and the dems are there own worst enemy .They are starting to believe that they are on a devine mission and can do no wrong. They also think that most of the people in this country feel the same way as the people at Msnbc & Cnn.do.It.s going to be fun to watch them fall.I only hope the country can survive.

I saw msnbc’s response to Jindal… the three stooges (olbermann, maddow, matthews) pretty much laughed at him… which makes me rethink my initial disappointment in Jindal.

BPD on February 24, 2009 at 10:58 PM

Good… overconfidence and dismissiveness by the Matthewses and Maddows of the world can only help the loyal opposition right now. IMO Jindal didn’t kill or embarrass himself beyond redemption with his delivery (as his innate qualities were still on display), he merely struck a sour note tonight. By the time he’s running for higher office he will have talked and said so many other things, on so many other occasions, that this night will fade into insignificance (again, because he didn’t do anything *really* bone-headed tonight).

And if it is true that the Republican ‘DC handlers’ are responsible for messing with Bobby’s mojo, I hope the flak sh-tstorm this has caused, from all quarters — including Republicans and conservatives — will finally convince the Republican party to lay off these geniuses for good and find some new help pronto.

Before they can ruin any more opportunities for Palin or Jindal to speak candidly to a national audience.

(Heck, I’ll consider it a win for Republicans if tonight’s ‘dud’ speech accomplishes that little trick alone…)

Nothing that cannot be fixed by people like that. She was born and raised with good town talk. These are things that we do in our daily lives, that don’t annoy us or our loved ones but a person that do not know us pick up on it very quickly. That is what makes us special, North, South, and in the Caribbean. :-D
