Open thread: Synthesis of Jesus, Lincoln, Reagan, and FDR to address nation; Update: Churchill, too
posted at 8:25 pm on February 24, 2009 by Allahpundit
9 p.m. ET everywhere. Obama should last about an hour, then Jindal takes over for 15 minutes. Here’s my Twitter prediction of what Jindal would say from early this afternoon, and here’s the excerpt of his speech released for publication a little while ago. How’d I do?
Compare and contrast the big finish to his rebuttal…
“A few weeks ago, the President warned that our nation is facing a crisis that he said ‘we may not be able to reverse.’ Our troubles are real, to be sure. But don’t let anyone tell you that we cannot recover – or that America’s best days are behind her.”
…with the key passage to the speech he’s rebutting. Hmmm:
But while our economy may be weakened and our confidence shaken; though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, tonight I want every American to know this: We will rebuild, we will recover, and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before.
The boss has already provided the Cliff’s Notes version of The One’s speech in case you don’t feel like watching. Or, if you prefer a longer treatment, try the AP’s report from the future on an address that hasn’t been delivered yet. Sounds like it was a smash. Exit question: Does the fact that the very first “Jindal is a Muslim” rumors are starting to swirl mean he’s officially arrived on the national stage?
Update: Politico helpfully prepares Jindal for the inevitable “you reeked” backlash.
Update: I forgot Churchill in the headline, but Chris Matthews didn’t. Follow the link for Buchanan’s retort.

David Gregory was just slobbering all over the place talking with Bryan Williams on the Nightly News. It was pathetic. Of course, when you have spent 8 years despising the previous President, slobbering comes naturally. For 8 years it was slobbering hate – now it’s slobbering love.

Remember to that some are calling President Obama our first ever Pastor in Chief. For Christians we need to recover the idea of radical antithesis. Once biblical Christianity if merged with anything it ceases to exist. J.G. Machen brilliantly argued that Liberalism and Christianity are incompatible with one another since they are two different religions.

The only way I would watch the filthy liar tonight is if, in the spirit of American Idol (which is being pre-empted for this sham) we get to see Simon Cowell tell Obama that it is doubtful whether that performance was good enough and the American public gets the opportunity to re-think the November elections and vote the bastard out before he does any more harm to the nation.
Seriously, and the nation is in a grim place these days with the vermin that is infesting the White House and Congress, I’ll hear all I need to hear about the filthy liar’s statement when the MSM gushes over him and pretends the rat bastard traitor is a leader.

You could predict Obama’s speech all the way down to the comma placement and it wouldn’t surprise me. He has a mad lib (what a fitting phrase for Obama!) in his pocket from which he has generated every speech he has ever made.

Looking forward to Bobby Jindals beat down after Barry’s sermon on the mount.

OK, so is this a SOTU, or not really?
And it’ll be interesting to see if the Republicans stay glued to their seats, and sit on their hands, like the Democrats did during Bush’s speeches.
In a way, I hope they don’t…just to show the Dem’s what class is all about.
JetBoy on February 24, 2009 at 8:36 PM
I have no desire to watch him try and act “hopeful” when he has been doom and gloom for the past month. The hypocrisy will disgust me.
sherry on February 24, 2009 at 8:36 PM
Shep read an early quote from the speech earlier, in which The One will apparently keep on whining about “inheriting” this mess. STFU you idiot, you’re compounding things. Hmm, how do you cut the deficit and create/save jobs? By increasing spending (and the deficit) to levels previously not dreamed of, and then taxing the hell out of the very people who create jobs. I would say “Hey Barry, no one ever got a job from a poor person, so why are you trying to hurt the ‘rich’ aka job creators?”, except that he and his puppet masters aren’t stupid… they know exactly what they’re doing.

The fact that Jindal’s heritage is Indian makes it more likely he is a Hindu than a Muslim. He is a Christian and unlike the filthy liar, it is not likely that he has cousins in terrorist organizations fighting against America. But let’s not stop decency, honesty, and good government from gushing over the filthy liar and pretending that he is going to save the nation.
In fact the filthy liar is sowing the seeds for misery for years to come and too many Americans are just too damned dumb to understand this obvious truth. I’m not for violent action but the sooner the filthy liar in the White House is neutralized the better.

I didn’t think I could despise Barry more, but pre-empting the most popular hour of television just to satisfy his huge ego really chaps me. I hope his teleprompter goes blank. (and if it does I’ll have to hear about it later because I can’t stand to watch the toad.)

I encourage everybody to watch. I attended “S.E.R.E.” training, many years ago. The one criticism of my group was that we refused to read the propaganda board. We ignored it, or tore things off of it, or threw stones at it.
The instructor said that if we were going to survive and keep the enemy from getting into our heads, we had to get into theirs. We had to learn everything we could about what they thought and how they they thought.
I never forgot that lesson. As a Sales Manager, I took a class on purchasing.
If you can’t watch “The One” tonight, watch “Reds.” They are pretty much the same.
Star20 on February 24, 2009 at 8:43 PM

That’s the difference between leadership and whatever the f**k the filthy liar is doing. As the filthy liar kept pointing out, there is only one President at a time. That individual gets whatever comes his way. If the economy sucks, you go about crafting economic policy. If the nation is in peril, you protect it. You do NOT start every f**king speech by claiming you “inherited” this situation.
GWB inherited a national security apparatus that was so lax tthat over 3,000 Americans were incinerated during the 9/11/01 atrocities. He NEVER EVER placed blame on the failed Clinton policies that lead to those attacks. In some ways it is a shame because many of the leading culprits of those policies are back in power with the filthy liar’s administration instead of in jail where they rightly belong.
highhopes on February 24, 2009 at 8:47 PM
Fortunately, my son has relieved me of the television tonight so I don’t have to suffer through Obama’s Book of Revelation. I’ll be going back and forth between Hot Air and the Manchester United soccer game which will keep me plenty busy.

Passionate-Conservative on February 24, 2009 at 8:47 PM
So he’s destroying our economy & using the word “crisis” 10 times a day, but now he’s going to tell us that everything is going to get better? If there’s anything I despise more than hypocrisy, it’s hypocrisy used for personal & political gain.

Knock the filthy liar’s legs out from under him by getting both houses of Congress back in 2010.
Grassroots organizations that fight the filthy liar every step of the way on the issues where he is wrong.
The creation of an RNC organization which has a clear anti-socialist message to counter the filthy liar and DNC.
Just three ways to mitigate the harm being done by the filthy liar, Democrats, and Republican traitors like McCain/Specter/ Collins.

Pray for teleprompter technical difficulties….
No…wait…I’ll do it the Chicago way…I will PAY someone to create teleprompter technical difficulties. There is no time to pray since I’d have to run an advance copy of my prayer through the White House anyway.
I’ll pay $13 a week, reduced to $8 a week beginning in 2010 to any page or clerk that can kick out the teleprompter plug about halfway through the speech…

highhopes on February 24, 2009 at 8:52 PM
I bought a jug of wine for the occasion.
Say, are there any “magic” words we should look for?
I’m interested in crisis and inherited, for starters.
I don’t think he’ll provide much hope, because at bottom Obama does NOT believe in this country. He has FDR-New Deal philosophy, but no belief in America. If we’d had Obama in 1941, after Pearl Harbor, we’d have rolled over and played dead.
BuckeyeSam on February 24, 2009 at 8:52 PM
I am not interested in what the one has to say. He has already proved himself to be a liar and a thief. I know, I know that just makes him a good politician. What we need is leadership not politics. And leadership is not something that resides in the hearts of our “professional politicians” left or right.

Obama would do well to watch Jimmy Stewart (George Bailey) in It’s a Wonderful Life. In particular, the bank-run scene as he was leaving for his honeyroom with Donna Reed (who was very hot). I see that scene now as Bailey act like a Republican with belief in America and belief in the individual ability of each of his depositors. Obama and the Democrats are Henry Potter trying to take advantage of the crisis.
