Heart-ache: 64% support stimulus, Obama’s mortgage plan

posted at 3:30 pm on February 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

The One 1, Santelli 0. I’ll give you the good news, such as it is, up front: Support for the stimulus is actually down since last month, dropping from 70/27 to 64/35, and the congressional GOP’s approval rating is “up” from 25/69 last summer to 38/56 today. But that’s the extent of it. In the same period, congressional Democrats have leaped from 35/57 to 50/44, the first time they’ve hit 50 percent since April 2007. Two other ominous data points for you to chew on, since they’re not getting much play. First:

What’s worrisome about that? Click here and skip down to question 7 and you’ll see it’s the widest gap between the president and the opposition on that question in 20 years. And second:

Mind-boggling though it may be to fiscal conservatives, and notwithstanding the fact that 87 percent say they’re concerned about the deficit, the public isn’t quite ready to toss tea in the harbor yet — except with respect to further loans to the Big Three, where support now stands at a radioactive 30/68. Exit question: What about all the Rasmussen polls showing growing discontent with Spendathon 2009? Well, discontent doesn’t necessarily mean disapproval; the public may be willing to accept this, however grudgingly, as hard medicine to prevent disaster. To the extent that Rasmussen’s suggesting anything else, check out the recent stimulus polls here and you’ll see that they’re swimming against the tide. Which isn’t anything new.

The Sons of Liberty were in the minority in the 18th century. Yet they and their ilk brought upon the American Revolution. 30% of people will think one way. 30% the opposite way. A majority of the remaining 40% — the squishys — will support the winning side.

I would tend to believe the poll. The WaPo and ABC don’t have a perfect track record when it comes to polling, but they are not as bad as Newsweek. It is fairly easy to believe because Obama has gone on the offensive and has touted his plan as the perfect prescription for the economy and most of the talking heads are telling people that it is great or that it’s law now so we might as well use it.

txaggie on February 24, 2009 at 3:42 PM

Do you mean to tell me that the WaPo dug up polling data from 1953 to help make a point that Obama is doing well??

Polls can be made to say anything by careful use of 4 control factors or was it 5. I can’t remember now, but it doesn’t matter. I can make a poll that shows 95% of the people HATE the porkulus.

I can make one that shows 75% support ogabebama by asking the above questions in downtown Peoples republic of cambridge MA.

dogsoldier on February 24, 2009 at 3:43 PM

When a question about the stimulus is premised with “will it be enough” and “it won’t work” is a volunteer-only response, I’m inclined to call bullpucky on the questions.

This is like that one Gallup poll where Politico was only too happy to transform “opinions of Republican voters” to “voter’s opinions of Congressional Republicans” to manufacture their own reality.

Any good pollster will say that a believable poll has to have opinion-neutral questions that are not suggestive. This fails on both counts.

Here’s the dubious phrasing of the question that got 34% strongly support and 30% somewhat support adding up to the “64%” referred to in the headline:

12. As you may know, the federal government will spend about 800 billion dollars on tax cuts, construction projects and aid to states and individuals to try to stimulate the economy. Do you support or oppose this plan? Do you feel that way strongly or somewhat?

The question clearly frames the stimulus bill in a favorable light and it still only got one third of the respondents strongly supporting.

The majority of Americans are now Socialists. They can’t spell it. They can’t define it. They just know that they need the State to take care of them, and that is why America will collapse into just another Socialist cesspool.

The war was lost with the collapse of the 2 parent family and with the Socialist takeover of the public schools.

The seeds of Socialism are illiteracy and ignorance. While your basic public school imbecile can’t find the continent of North America, on a map of only North America, he/she can recite, non-stop for a week, the geo-political, economic and social ramifications of Rosa Parks.

And also misrepresents the bill. Since most of the tax cuts were removed, and only a tiny fraction of the bill spends on construction, the only fair way to pose the question would be to reverse the order of those points, and to include the price of each. That question would not get the same response, I can assure you.

I shudder to think what will happen if oil prices go up like last year. Obama and the Dems will be telling us that we need to ignore offshore drilling and nuclear power and wait another 10 years while heavily subsidized alternative-fuel sources will only be somewhat outrageously expensive.

Seriously, what does Obama really care? One term or two, successful or not, he’ll walk away to sell a couple of memoirs that he’ll plug on Oprah and he’ll make twice the money that Clinton has made on the lecture circuit. He’ll be the perfect politically correct, diversity-concious public speaker.

But I digress. Stay strong, stick to your guns. My dad wasn’t much for good advice, but he was right about one thing: If everyone is running off a cliff, do you think it’s a good idea to follow them?

If you think I’m putting faith in the wisdom of Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Schummer, Dodd, Frank, and the rest of those Democratic POS, you have another think coming.

Calm down, people. The honeymoon isn’t over yet with the majority of the public. If(well, when actually) the porkulus bill doesn’t work and unemployment approaches double digits, his approval ratings will sink quicker than the Titanic.

That being said, he’ll likely always have numbers in at least the high 30′s. The majority of Dems and virtually all black voters polled will give him high marks.

Now the positive numbers for the Congressional Dems, that concerns the hell out of me. I don’t know what they’ve done recently(or in the last 2 years to be frank) that would inspire confidence in anyone.

Exactly. A properly worded question probably would hav received far different responses:

As you may know, the federal government, which is already $10 trillion in debt, will spend borrow another 800 billion dollars for very small individual tax cuts, construction projects and aid to states and individuals to try to stimulate the economy. This is on top of the $700 billion in borrowing allocated to shore up the banks and auto companies. Do you support or oppose this plan? Do you feel that way strongly or somewhat?
