Video: The obligatory “Sean Penn scolds America, salutes his own courage” clip
posted at 2:20 pm on February 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
I’m late enough to this that all the points worth making have already been made. See, e.g., Richard Just at TNR noting what a moron Penn is to even jokingly equate support for gay rights with communism or Ace reminding Spicoli that our “elegant” new president is himself on record as opposing gay marriage. Give him credit for candor, though: Per his opening line, he’s under no illusions about the role politics played in his winning. Reminds me of Clooney’s own self-congratulatory acceptance speech a few years ago for yet another role where politics doubtless weighed heavily on voters. Brave artists bravely rewarding themselves for bravely advancing liberal orthodoxy; over to you, Andrew Breitbart.
If “the medium is the message,” as Marshall McLuhan formulated 45 years ago in “Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man,” then Hollywood-style liberalism is America´s current and future message. And conservatives have no one to blame but themselves for not investing their collective efforts in the pop cultural and the greater media experience.
Art, music, film and new media must be at the center of a reborn conservative movement. Hollywood should not simply be ignored, reviled and condemned by detached intellectuals, talk radio and elected officials caught in her crosshairs, but taken on head-on…
My biggest fear is that later this week I will be among the legions at CPAC rearranging the furniture. Instead, the conservative movement needs to think in revolutionary terms.
Exit question: Why is it that Hollywood’s ability to influence the culture is not only acknowledged but celebrated by the industry when that influence is salutary, but denied and dismissed as conservative scapegoating when it isn’t, e.g., in glamorizing violence and teen promiscuity?

No mention. He “forgot” to thank his wife, Robyn. Heh.
Courage.

Didn’t watch the oscars nor know anyone that did…no reason to watch asshole’s clip either…
DCJeff on February 23, 2009 at 2:22 PM
I love myself to much to watch that talking ball sack.
Keyser-Soze on February 23, 2009 at 2:24 PM
Even though I didn’t like “American Carol” very much (mostly due to bad acting) it reminds me of the scene where the main character is in a room full of Hollywood snobs who bash the right and then talk about how brave they are. They then make a comment on how they would never make an anti-muslim film because they didn’t want to get killed.
txaggie on February 23, 2009 at 2:24 PM
Ditto.
Did anyone think he wouldn’t have won anyway, considering he’s an America-hating lefty who played a gay guy in a movie? He could’ve phoned it in and won.
thirteen28 on February 23, 2009 at 2:25 PM
Didn’t watch last night. Won’t watch Penn now. Did he mention that Milk was a former service member that was a…Republican?
robblefarian on February 23, 2009 at 2:26 PM
Mickey Rourke was robbed!
Doughboy on February 23, 2009 at 2:26 PM
The question answers itself.
And I couldn’t and won’t watch that clip. Just can’t do it.

Way to take a stand, Sean.
Next stop on your ‘Truth To Power’ series of speeches, Iran!
DaveC on February 23, 2009 at 2:26 PM
Watched “Remains of the Day” in lieu of the Oscars. What a great movie. One of the rare cases where the film is as good as the book.
Did he give a shout-out to Fidel and Hugo?
exlibris on February 23, 2009 at 2:26 PM
The real victim here is Mickey Rourke, who deserved that award more than anyone, which Penn even backhandedly admitted.
Politics over performance.

Penn is a piece of slime and makes me vomit in my mouth. Only the Hollywood cesspool could have produced this turd.

I am seeing bright blue scrotum here, folks, bright blue.

Oscar who? Never heard of him. A non-event if there ever was one.
BHO Jonestown on February 23, 2009 at 2:27 PM
Good question. Though, it’s obviously worked, since the question didn’t even occur to me.
Esthier on February 23, 2009 at 2:27 PM
He should win for best comedy.

Oscars were on last night? Haven’t paid to see a Hollywood film in years…
Caper29 on February 23, 2009 at 2:28 PM
Sean Penn played Sean Penn with Lisping ‘S’s and a flex in his wrist and won an award for it. Really.
DaveC on February 23, 2009 at 2:28 PM
Really brave guy. Next up: Profiles in Courage Award at the Kennedy Center.
I managed to watch about five minutes last night since my wife wanted to see the Best Supporting Actor ceremony for Heath Ledger. Then that self-serving schmuck Bill Maher came out and did a tribute to himself, or something like that. That was my cue to turn the television off and go to sleep.
JammieWearingFool on February 23, 2009 at 2:28 PM
Watching that clip? Not obligatory for me.
Evilwhiteguy on February 23, 2009 at 2:29 PM
I read from some that he did. Though I didn’t see the movie, so I don’t really know.
Esthier on February 23, 2009 at 2:29 PM
Yeah, I mean Penn is a tool, but he even admits here: “I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me…often.”
If I decided to boycott every movie starring Hollywood lefties, I wouldn’t be watching very many movies. Hardly any, actually.
JetBoy on February 23, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Oh yeah.. he addresses the hate ‘out there’ regarding Prop 8..
From a man who has no issues screaming and punching any paparazzi photographer out there.
DaveC on February 23, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Heh. Yeah, I think today everyone who reads Hot Air at work is grateful youtube’s blocked.
Esthier on February 23, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Sean Penn is getting what he wants. He and his ilk are getting the government and country that they deserve and we shall all get to watch as the ship sinks out of site. Congratulations to you comrade. Bravo. . . bravo.
King of the Britons on February 23, 2009 at 2:32 PM
Sean Peen is a consummate narcissist who probably hurts every cause he purports to support.

Nahanni on February 23, 2009 at 2:32 PM
The Academy Awards. If I want to see 3 hours of detached liberals pleasuring themselves I’ll rent a Jenna Jameson compilation video.
Crusty on February 23, 2009 at 2:33 PM
Oh yeah..
After last night, Hugh Jackman (the host who sang and danced some broadway number montage (montage)) has a very hard sell with Wolverine coming out.
DaveC on February 23, 2009 at 2:33 PM
There was a movie called “Milk”…no shiite? And it had to do with a gay city supervisor being killed? And the actor portraying Milk just happened to win an Oscar? And this happened in Hollywood?
Yet another instance of me being incredibly happy that I’m a flyover hick, clinging to guns and riding carbon-spewing ATV’s around with my kids.
Bishop on February 23, 2009 at 2:33 PM
Oscars? They were on TV?
Guess I missed that one. I only get one channel now bcs of the imposed govt mandate on digital broadcasting.
I can’t afford to buy another antenna (& no the digital box won’t work for pondunk-we actually have to buy another outside (large) antenna-they don’t tell you that. They let you find this out yourself).
But I am fortunate to have missed this.
Penn is a douche. He is tiring to watch in any forum.
He is merely crying out for attention bcs the public has basically rejected him.
His Hollywood buddies are the only ones who love him.
This is one thing Madonna did right-dumping the douche.
Badger40 on February 23, 2009 at 2:33 PM
I don’t feel an obligation to watch it.
joe_doufu on February 23, 2009 at 2:34 PM
He probably refused to thank his wife because gay men and women cannot yet thank their husbands and wives.
myrenovations on February 23, 2009 at 2:34 PM
My favorite part was the “wrong side of history” thing in re Prop 8. I don’t really know what my as yet unborn grandchildren will think of my views on such matters, but I’d be willing to wager they won’t think much of Sean Penn.

DaveC on February 23, 2009 at 2:36 PM
My husband and I didn’t watch the Academy Awards, but we weren’t surprised when Penn beat out Rourke (winner of numerous awards including People’s Choice award). Typical Hollywood, award on a basis of a political or social statement.
pjean on February 23, 2009 at 2:36 PM
Excuse for a second…I have to go take a Sean Penn and wipe my Michael Moore. Be back in a few minutes.

Between Penn and Maher, I can’t decide who is more in love with himself.
I wonder if they watch themselves after the show and notice how completely nauseating it is for the rest of us to see 2 guys so completely enamored with themselves?

Ghoul aid on February 23, 2009 at 2:42 PM
I cannot ever imagine allowing myself to be in a position where Sean Penn could criticize me on any issue – much less a moral one.
I’m not exactly a self-righteous person – most definitely, but I think on the scale of humanity, gonna have to find someone a bit higher than Mr. Penn to make me pay attention.
I read the play-by-play on BigHollywood – I’m sure all those folks just sat there and listened to this clown. Give me a break.
kybowexar on February 23, 2009 at 2:42 PM
And wasn’t that after she called the police and reported that he’d smacked her around?
I don’t think any of us need lessons on morality from a guy who beats up women.
What a hypocritical, narcissistic loser this guy is.

Somehow I think you cover more people than that silly woman in New York who was so shocked that Nixon won in 1972. She knew no one who voted for him!
My wife who is a recovering Oscar junkie managed only about 15 minutes near the end. She told me she’d rather just hear about it the next day. I’m so proud of her recovery. She used to watch the entire thing while grading papers.
kybowexar on February 23, 2009 at 2:45 PM
A hyped-up Hollywierd event that is just Hollyweird scum patting themselves on the back?
not interested.
Sean Penn=homo-loving commie!
ObamatheMessiah on February 23, 2009 at 2:46 PM

I won’t watch the clip, or “Milk”, or any of Penn’s other movies. He can suck it.

This lowlife winning best actor had nothing to do with his movie role and everything to do with liberal Academy members and their feelings on California’s Proposition 8…
IntheNet on February 23, 2009 at 2:49 PM
Highlight of the night for me, knowing how Mr. Penn’s gracious speech would twist the knickers of hotair’s dozens and dozens of readers.

Don’t really care.

Esthier on February 23, 2009 at 2:50 PM
Stupid Penn was “Milking it” for all it was worth. He is such an ASS in the grand sense of the word.
This was nothing but a Prop 8 jab to the public. A Zucchini Squish could have been cast as Harvey Milk and won the award this year.
portlandon on February 23, 2009 at 2:50 PM
Agreed, and surprisingly Reeves playing the Not-for-peace-at-any-cost American.
Even the Hollywood clock is right two times a day.
shick on February 23, 2009 at 2:51 PM
I just saw this clip on the morning show. I took the commie remark as a reference to his politics not linked to the gay issue but I could be wrong. At any rate, I just can’t stand the guy. Hated him when he was a nasty kid running around with Madonna too. I could only watch a small part of the video. The idea of this moron lecturing America makes me ill.
Arclight56 on February 23, 2009 at 2:52 PM
Almost everyone responding to this blind item thinks it’s Sean Penn and someone(maybe lohan)…
http://blindgossip.com/index.php/2009/02/23/oscar-nominee-cheating-on-his-wife/
You know what Sean Penn didn’t do? Thank his wife… when he’s up there ranting about gay marriage…
ninjapirate on February 23, 2009 at 2:53 PM
Bill Maher’s self-absorbed tribute, from last night:
Bill Maher: Thank you very much. Everyone’s crying and now I have to go on. (laughter) But the film you just watched was created by Albert Maysles, who with his brother David (applause) brought us classics like GIMME SHELTER and GREY GARDENS. Thank you Albert and David Maysles. (applause)
Now, as a producer and star of a documentary of my own this year (laughter, applause), the one about religion that didn’t get nominated. I know, it’s a touchy subject, but some day we all do have confront the notion that our silly gods cost the world too greatly. But there I go ruining the ending. (nervous laughter)
But I’m very grateful I live in a country where I could even put this film out. And I appreciate more than ever the documentarians and the impact their films can have. For the documentary filmmakers truly are our windows to the world. They give us a candid look beyond our own circumstances. They give us the truth and make us aware of the greater humanity around us.
I wish you would join me in applauding and thanking all the documentarians (applause). We should go see their movies more, starting with mine.
Conservative_SAHM on February 23, 2009 at 2:53 PM
Yes, sir.
Ian on February 23, 2009 at 2:54 PM
If there ever was a Poster child for Birth Control, here he is. That rumble you felt in California when he received his Oscar was not an earthquake. It was all the classic American movie stars rolling over in their graves. He needs to move to Europe and be a roommate of Michael Jackson.
kingsjester on February 23, 2009 at 2:55 PM
BTW, why didn’t they release the film before Prop 8…
ninjapirate on February 23, 2009 at 2:56 PM
I’m so glad Sean Penn was brave enough to make this movie so I could see the flaws of my narrow-minded, bourgeois morality and start to think just like a sophisticated, artistic Hollywood actor. Because I want the whole country to be JUST LIKE California.
/sarc. off.
patriette on February 23, 2009 at 2:57 PM

gatorboy on February 23, 2009 at 2:58 PM
Remember when Sean Penn played a retard…best role ever for him except the guy he played was quite a bit smarter than he was, they had to edit a great many scenes to make Penn look as smart as the Retard…

Did he ride his rowboat home after the festivities? How many celebs showed up on their bikes and in their Priuses?
ErinF on February 23, 2009 at 3:02 PM
Or maybe a mention of his dead brother, fellow actor Chris Penn. But noooo, it was all about fabulous Sean.
CarolynM on February 23, 2009 at 3:02 PM
Whatever. Worst actor ever. After his performance in Casualties of War, he should have been barred from consideration forever.
Sean Penn’s movies are probably the only thing that would make me keep flipping channels until I found a Pauly Shore movie.
hawkdriver on February 23, 2009 at 3:02 PM
Sometimes I’m somewhat grateful that I have dial up and cannot watch some of the videos. This appears to fall into that category. However, it does cause me to study the pix that is put up on the blog and ,as customary, I did. Has anyone but me ever noticed that Sean Penn is quite a homely man? How did he ever get to be a movie star? I thought they had to be some kind of good looking or distantly attractive, even if only a little.
jeanie on February 23, 2009 at 3:03 PM
Mickey Rourke on Sean Penn (it rings true).
“I thought he did an average pretend acting like he was gay. Besides, he’s one of the most homophobic people I know.”
According to Madonna, Sean Penn used to curse out her gay friends.
Hilts on February 23, 2009 at 3:04 PM
I guess having the homosexual lifestyle being shoved down my throat like its morale…makes me respect them so much more!
I guess I should also be okay with adultery, prostitution, pedophilia, polygamy, and every other aspect or our sinful world!
What a bunch of arrogant & unrighteous jackasses.

Hollyweird, in their Liberal arrogance, seems determined to drive away the majority of the American viewing public.
kingsjester on February 23, 2009 at 3:06 PM
Penn has a lot of effeminate mannerisms. Just sayin.
marklmail on February 23, 2009 at 3:07 PM

I do find it hilarious that Hollywood and Penn himself glorifies people like Che Guevera who would have put a bullet into Milk’s head just as quick.

I missed the part where he scolds America. Just proponents of Prop 8.
crr6 on February 23, 2009 at 3:08 PM
How about the weepy guy they kept cutting to during Penns acceptance speech. He got an award for something earlier and could hardly hold back the tears of self-pity as he told of the hardships of growing up gay in some Mormon town of Texas before moving to CA. Oh the humanity!!!
Meanwhile, those beautiful little child actors from Slumdog, who come from the slums and probably know a thing or two about real hardship and suffering, were happy and gracious and resilient. Can everyone just man up please?
CarolynM on February 23, 2009 at 3:11 PM
