Video: The obligatory “Sean Penn scolds America, salutes his own courage” clip

I’m late enough to this that all the points worth making have already been made. See, e.g., Richard Just at TNR noting what a moron Penn is to even jokingly equate support for gay rights with communism or Ace reminding Spicoli that our “elegant” new president is himself on record as opposing gay marriage. Give him credit for candor, though: Per his opening line, he’s under no illusions about the role politics played in his winning. Reminds me of Clooney’s own self-congratulatory acceptance speech a few years ago for yet another role where politics doubtless weighed heavily on voters. Brave artists bravely rewarding themselves for bravely advancing liberal orthodoxy; over to you, Andrew Breitbart.
If “the medium is the message,” as Marshall McLuhan formulated 45 years ago in “Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man,” then Hollywood-style liberalism is America´s current and future message. And conservatives have no one to blame but themselves for not investing their collective efforts in the pop cultural and the greater media experience.
Art, music, film and new media must be at the center of a reborn conservative movement. Hollywood should not simply be ignored, reviled and condemned by detached intellectuals, talk radio and elected officials caught in her crosshairs, but taken on head-on…
My biggest fear is that later this week I will be among the legions at CPAC rearranging the furniture. Instead, the conservative movement needs to think in revolutionary terms.
Exit question: Why is it that Hollywood’s ability to influence the culture is not only acknowledged but celebrated by the industry when that influence is salutary, but denied and dismissed as conservative scapegoating when it isn’t, e.g., in glamorizing violence and teen promiscuity?

Yes indeed. Also I read where Penn once punched a photographer while calling him a”fucking faggot”.
Hilts on February 23, 2009 at 3:17 PM
As far as I am concerned, what Sean Penis does is not truly acting. He’s usually just being himself, at least in the movies that I’ve seen him in.
Examples:
Fast Times at Ridgemont High – stoned idiot (Penn being himself)
Mystic River, murderous thug (Penn being himself)
I am Sam – mentally handicapped adult (Penn being himself)
Dead man Walking – murderer with no regard for human life (Penn being himself)
Falcon and the Snowman – traitor to America (Penn being himself)

So, after winning the Oscar for “Milk”, what’s next for Penn?
I’ve got it…. “Frank”, in which he plays the first openly gay, “ethically challenged” congressman.
Should be another sure win for Penn!
UltimateBob on February 23, 2009 at 3:21 PM
What the hell is Milk? I must be out of touch.
Paleoconservatarian on February 23, 2009 at 3:24 PM
“Milk” will go on the shelf and be forgotten by most.
“The Wrestler” will go on to permanent rotation on the cable channels ala Shawshank Redemption and will become a perennial favorite.

You mean other than the fact that Hollywood is populated by self-important hypocritical narcissistic dulalrds who couldn’t find their nether regions with a spotlight and a GPS? Then no, I can’t think of an answer to that question.

Classy and classic.
hawkdriver on February 23, 2009 at 3:42 PM
He plays a man who likes to s_ _ k another man’s d_ _k. That’s OK if he’s like that. After all, most “actors” say there’s a bit of them in their portrayals…. maybe just a bit more of him in this one.
afotia on February 23, 2009 at 3:52 PM
So penn did a bang-up job of playing a alleged faggot hero and then has the gall to chastise the rest of us God fearing types with his stupiid remarks….maybe someone should ram a copy of Leviticus up his nambla lovin’ ass and see if that’s an abomination..

Mickey Rourke was robbed!
Doughboy on February 23, 2009 at 2:26 PM
By liberal standards, Rourke having the balls to refuse to “blame Bush for everything” doomed any chance he may have had of winning an Oscar.
Still, it takes a hell of a lot courage to go against those mindless a/o in Hollywood. I have always like Rourke as an actor, and now knowing he is essentially a conservative makes me like him even more.
try again later on February 23, 2009 at 3:52 PM
I find it odd that the liberals get their panties in a wad when they see people protesting them or “Prompterbama” or Prop 8 defenders etc….
But conservatives will respond, when watching a protest, “It’s great to live in a country where one has a right to speak freely, PEACEFULLY.”
Penn’s gang publishes addresses of those who don’t agree with his views, threaten them, destroy their property or even injure them. Sean, take the protests like a man, or do you only play one on the big screen?

Leo Penn, Sean’s father, was a German Jew who appeased the Nazis under Hitler by cooperating with them while they were commiting genocide on Jews. After he came from Germany after the war, he and others became members of the Communist Party while getting into the movie business. Leo and his cohorts were dispelled from Hollywood during the Joe McCarthy hearings in the 1950s. Sean is just another chip off the old block by trashing America and promoting Communism just like dear old dad. He wins because of the other chips off the old blocks that are still there…….GOOGLE: Leo Penn

just like most black people couldn’t seem to figure out that they could become anything they wanted to be in life before Obama came along, now the gay self pity party has given itself an orgasm because now harvey milk has shown the gays that they can be anything they want to be. i have never heard of harvey milk growing up, and yet somehow i managed to survive and thrive just fine.

The fact that gay men are at least 15 times more likely to get HIV/AIDS should have some bearing on this issue. They account for 71% of all new cases. It makes no sense to propagate something that is such a health risk to those who engage in such behavior.

All the while women wearing millions in diamonds were applauding the awards for ‘Slumdog Millionare’, a movie obout extreme poverty and the separation of classes. How could they wade through the hypocrisy?
michaelo on February 23, 2009 at 4:06 PM
I lost all respect for Hollywood when they refused to acknowledge or say a word of protest about the murder of Theo Van Gogh. If every religious Christian and religious Jew in America converted to Islam and became a Muslim fundamentalist, the gay rights crowd would shut up about gay marriage real fast, as they’d be scared to death of real extremists.
The sad fact is that there’s probably more conservative leaning moderates who are in the closet than there are gay people who are closeted. I’m talking about people who are afraid to let anyone know that they take conservative positions on many issues because they don’t want to get into any confrontations with liberals. They qualify their conservative tendencies by saying “but it’s not like I’m one of those born again Christians”. And they think that if they complain too much about liberal bias in the media that someone might accuse them of being a right wing nut. They also pat themselves on the back for taking liberal positions on certain issues. They say stuff like “don’t call me a conservative, I’m not a conservative or a liberal, I just have my own particular opinions”. But the reality is that they’ve been brow beaten into keeping their conservative views to themselves.
In the privacy of a voting booth they’ll vote Republican, but until they muster enough guts to express their views in mixed company we’ll be fighting an uphill battle trying to influence this country’s popular culture. And we conservatives aren’t doing ourselves any favors by labeling the likes of Rudy Giuliani as a liberal. We need to stick up for the Evangelicals, and at the same time, not demand 100% purity from people who are, for the most part, on our side.
Me? I’m a Dennis Miller conservative, a ganja Republican. To some people on this site, I’m not pure enough. To most liberals I’m as scary as Rick Santorum or Tom Tancredo.

I said the same thing. This was the easily the most rigged award in entertainment history. Acting is like journalism. You have to be a piece of human garbage to be a part of either. When you get an award for being retarded or a homsexual, it is not acting if you are just being who you are.

Sean Penn is one of these certified legend-in-his-own-mind Hollyweird types who suffers from the delusion that people actually believe he has something profound and significant to say every single time he opens his mouth, when what actually spews forth is a blend of blathering nonsense, blubbering pomposity and substandard grade gobbledygook.
Such as what came sailing out from between his teeth last night.

That’s really true. I always thought it’d be interesting to see what all there are in the way of awards that entertainers vie for. They do seem to need reassurances from their peers that they’re as good as they think they are. Meanwhile, the elites seem to think anyone who is worthy of true recognition for their achievements in life are something clownish. This is a quote from a column by Dick Cavett where he was busting on Gen Petraeus and AM Crocker and their speaking skills. He couldn’t help attacking military Petraeus’s ribbons.
Gen David Petraeus is a personal hero who I have met and spoken with. What he wears on his chest you can’t get by acting brave in front of a camera. You have to be brave in front of the enemy.
I have nothing but utter contempt for Hollywood liberal elitests. (And Dick Cavett)

Any increase in interest this year was due solely to the curiosity concerning whether Heath Ledger would win or not, and if The Dark Knight hadn’t been ignored in so many categories and gotten the recognition it deserved, a lot more people would have watched. The fact that director Christopher Nolan was not even nominated for the skill with which he put this fantastic film together will forever be a blot on the Academy’s reputation. Not that it had much of one to begin with.

David Weigel said it best, and I hate Weigel*!
“Sean Penn’s two Oscars came at the expense of Mickey Rourke and Bill Murray. He is history’s greatest monster.”
–David Weigel
*I hate Weigel almost as much as I hate commies!
I absolutely loathe commies of any stripe, but have no problem with homo-lovin’ anybodies.
But if a homo were a commie, I would hate him for his commie ways.
Even if he were just a commie-lovin’ homo, I would hate him still.
Further, if all AMPASMs and everyone at the Kodak were actually commie homo-lovin’ sons-a-guns, then I hate them all, but not for their homo-lovin’ ways.
See, I just really, really hate commies — all collectivists actually. Especially useful idiots like Sean Penn, his “elegant” president, all the commies that voted for him.

He and Beck are both on while I’m driving home from work and his show usually wins out in my car. Common sense conservative without the Beck drama. He also writes a Sunday column in the Tennessean that’s aways a good read. He deserves national exposure. You’ll enjoy him.

I’d say it goes even a step beyond that. Hollywood is the embodiment of everything that liberals criticize in our nominally capitalist system – nepotism, ego trips, the casting couch, and a pay scale the antithesis of egalitarian where there is little justification for the salaries that biggest names earn.
If liberals weren’t so oblivious to everything outside of their carefully crafted narrative they might actually want to do something about the fact that their primary media organ celebrates hypocrisy.

“…. and your grandchildren’s grandchildren will look at you with shame for opposing incest…. and their grandchildren will look at them with shame for opposing polygamy…. and their grandchildren shame them for opposing pedophilia…”
And for our more “progressive” conservative friends here who hate when one equates gay sex with child molestation, let me preemptively say that the point is, a generation ago, gay sex was illegal and looked upon as shamefully as sex with children. It’s just taken a generation of pop-culture, etc. to push something down our throats, despite no evidence to support it as being “natural”. Who’s to say that in 50 years we won’t be called “bigots” and “haters” for refusing to believe that some adults are naturally attracted to children?
(This is the part where you guys say “but gay sex is between 2 consenting adults)
What is an adult? 18? Well, that’s the law… though age of consent is lower in some states. But the point is, the law used to outlaw sodomy too. Also, why just “2″ consenting adults? Why limit it to 2?
At any rate, we’ve seen increasing evidence that kissing cousins can have children with no increased issues, compared to unrelated couples. When do we demand rights for them?
And here’s another thing I’ve been wondering recently. The case against incest has always been the whole retarded children thing… So what about homo-incest? 2 sisters want to get down? 2 brothers? I demand rights for these oppressed peoples!!!
Bottom line – think people! The fact that we have 2 genders with uniquely designed reproductive organs isn’t a coincidence, no matter how much you try to trick yourself in to denying common sense so that you can accept your gay uncle or friend or coworker.

If you disagree with the mentality of those in Hollywood the best way to make your point is to stop going to watch the movies. Let the people that bring their babies and talk back to the screen fund this madness, you know those that likely don’t pay taxes and get a tax refund.
Get hollywood where it hurts, in their wallets. Stop going to the movies and stop renting their filth on pay per view.
workingforpigs on February 24, 2009 at 12:21 AM
Was never enamored of actors in general…they never affected my pay grade. But, I can affect their pay grade. So can a lot of others. Haven’t been to a movie theater since Pearl Harbor came out, and only then because a friend asked my opinion on what some were calling major inaccuracies in the movie…a row of Fletcher-class destroyers being attacked by Japanese Zero’s…and quite a few more.
If a decent flick is on TV…fine. if there is good DVD out there (Ice Age, Ice Age II, for example…”Skrat” the poor schlemiel squirrel is a metaphor for my own life…)I might rent it frrm netflix…but put cash in the hands of most of the Hollyweird crowd? Nope.
“Get hollywood where it hurts, in their wallets. Stop going to the movies and stop renting their filth on pay per view. Yep.

We took our kids to see transformers last year, thinking it would be ok. There was a scene where they were talking about masturbation and it went on and on. the theater was silent as it was full of shocked parents and kids with obvious questions for them after the movie. This could have not been placed in the movie because is lacked any relevance, it was merely put in there because some moron thought it was cool. That was the last time I will ever think that hollywood had any sense of values. Hollywood always forcing their view of what should be normal, is not entertainment, it is a statement of a degraded mindset.
Boycott Hollywood, hit them where it hurts. and let them go masturbate at the moon.
workingforpigs on February 24, 2009 at 1:45 AM
Although I’ve seen neither The Wrestler or Milk, I have to say that I thought the acting on both of them was good. Politics aside, Sean Penn really did look gay in that movie. I’ve seen clips of it, and he looks seriously gay. I mean, he would have fooled me into believing he was gay if I met him in real life acting that way.
Mickey Rourke appeared to be really good in the clips I saw. He was excellent in Rumblefish, and I don’t doubt he has talent.
So what it comes down to is this: if both actors gave a good performance, who do you choose? In the British BAFTAs they picked Mickey Rourke. In America they picked Milk.
Was it politics that made the difference?
dcpolwarth on February 24, 2009 at 3:13 AM

He has even been sodomized by a goat. He actually told me this after his divorce from Madonna. He said Madonna was too much of a man for him so instead of fist sized dildoes for him, he had to use Hulk Hogan sized fists to satisfy him. Also, Sean told me that he actually gave a blowjob to chavez as well as Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte. However, He was disappointed that Danny and Harry could not live up to their reputations and had 3″ penisis so Sean was not satisfied.

Hollywood absolutely kills me!
This is a town that celebrates its view as an open-minded, all welcoming, moral leader in the fight for whoever the hell the victims are this week, but yet it took them about 75 years before they gave the best actress award to a black woman. Way to stay ahead of the curve there Tinseltown! You’ve now caught up to 1970’s Alabama!
No longer are awards given on merit, but on a political philosophy. How could Penn not win for Milk? It’s about a gay, San Francisco liberal! The only thing that would’ve made him a lock, is that if Milk was autistic or mentally challenged.
It reminds of that scene in Bowfinger when Eddie Murphy’s A-List character says that white people get awards for being retarded and blacks get it for being slaves. Get me a role as a retarded slave! Hollywood is so predictable, and is a slave to their small, narrow ideals.
The Oscars are the equivalent of masturbating, cuddling with yourself and telling yourself what a wonderful lover you are.
