Video: Fox News host rips ACORN chief over reclaiming foreclosed homes

Move over, Santelli, there’s a new ostentatiously outraged sheriff in town. Between this and the CNBC “rant heard ’round the world,” expect every financial reporter on cable to start throwing their own atomic fits in hopes of media stardom and, just maybe, a book deal or two. What finer way could there be to start the day than watching a red-faced Erin Burnett pound the desk on “Morning Joe” while hollering about creeping socialism?

You’ll recognize Bertha Lewis, I trust, from her creepy “by any means necessary” post this weekend at HuffPo. Exit question: How much more explosive would this interview have been if Varney had been armed with the boss’s deep background info?

[Response to "Karl Marx"]You’re craving attention, aren’t you? I’ll give you some: You’re weird, unoriginal, nettling, and silly.

Oh, and you don’t sound smart at all in case you were wondering.

Children, there’s this thing called satire. It was once a great comedic form in the land. However, I guess it has gone the way of free-market capitalism. :(

Quisp on February 23, 2009 at 4:03 PM

Allah,

You keep treating Santelli like he’s some cable hack. Why don’t you take the time to go look at some of his older reporting from the last year on Youtube. He’s consistently “gotten it right.” He’s not some fatcat trader who wants to yell at Democrats.

He always delivers his reports in this manner. He speaks passionately, but not foolishly.

He’s called out every bailout package (yes the ones for the banks, too). He’s called out the Fed for blowing it. He’s called out whoever needs to be taken to task.

So let’s not lump this guy with the typical cable newsie with a chip on his/her shoulders.

Exactly right. If they didn’t pay their water bill, the water would be turned off. Same with the lights, the phone, etc. You don’t make the car payment, they come get your car. If you don’t pay the mortgage, you lose the house. Why is that so hard for them to figure out? Are they really that stupid or do they think we are? Either way they’re wrong.

The $1,000,000,000 that goes to ACORN from the stimulus package will insure that the harm they are dedicated in causing will be increased tenfold so that any election in the future will be tainted with the socialistic pressures brought to bear by their unscrupulous attacks.

faraway on February 23, 2009 at 4:15 PM

I don’t know if anyone else noticed this, or my perception of what he was getting at was just incorret, but about the reporter talking with Varney. He’s trying to get him to “admit” that there are some legitimate problem mortgages out there. He talks about the “predatory lending” issue, but the goes on to say something about “Real heartache cases and people who have lost thier jobs……….” and seems to imply that these are the people that should be helped. I’m sorry, but as much of an ass as I may sound, people have been losing their jobs, and then their houses, for decades and longer. Just because there’s more of them now doesn’t mean that my tax dollars should go to bail them out. Feel sorry for them (The one’s that lost their jobs and means of paying bills), you bet. Feel like I’m obliged to help them out. Nope. Victims of predatory lending, well 1) most of them were to dumb/stupid/ignorant (pick one) to realize they weren’t able to be in a house on their income (or just failed to read the contract, again their fault) 2) they may have legitimate legal recourse in the future to get back some of all of their money if there we knowingling wronged. So the Varney guy, hit’s the nail on the head for me. And this trouble maker he interviewed, should be in jail for inciting illegal activities.

I actually went to HuffPo yesterday just to see if anyone had a coherent argument in favor of the Bertha/ACORN tactics. Happily (and surprisingly), the outrage over there was about as strong as it is here. No one (save for one commenter) supported ACORN’s tactics, plus the comments had lots of juicy details about the ‘foreclosed’ woman – she is/was an ACORN employee, refinanced the house at least twice, rented her basement illegally, etc.
All in all, it was a rather pleasant trip over to the dark side.

Baltimore’s Bolt Cutters Beverly has been arrested:

Joe Cox, a community organizer for ACORN in Baltimore, said Monday’s arrest was not a surprise.

“We definitely expected some kind of a response,” Cox said. “We understand people have to do their jobs and we hope that they understand that we’re doing this to highlight the issue.”

Cox said he expects homesteading — refusing to vacate a foreclosed property — will become common as blame for the foreclosure crisis increasingly shifts from homeowners to financial corporations.

“This program is saying, ‘We are not going,’” Cox said last week. “People say we’re breaking the law, but we don’t see how putting a person back in an abandoned property is harming anyone.”

This is not homesteading by any stretch of the imagination.

If they insist on using an historic term to try to cover up their lawbreaking, being a squatter would be closer to the truth.

INC on February 23, 2009 at 4:20 PM

I read part of the Bertha Lewis post on HuffPo until I had to go puke. Part of the story is about a woman (ACORN member) that was evicted 6 months ago. She and band of thugs went to reclaim “her house.” It says she used bolt cutters to get inside, but the house was trashed to include the toilets being gone.

Having secured distressed properties for lenders, if the house was trashed, it was because previous hoodlums had broken in. If they took the toilets out, I can guarantee that there was a door or large window knocked out to accomplish this. Not sure why they needed bolt cutters to get inside.

ACORN, in a just world, would be shut down under RICO and the members fined and or imprisoned.

TugboatPhil on February 23, 2009 at 4:20 PM

He makes a mistake though: when she argues that we bailed out the banks, he should have nailed her for that being the first mortgage bailout — where over 5 million people — most with subprime loans — bailed! He should have nailed her for this. Put her front and center and made her responsible for her and her organizations actions.

The Frontiersman on February 23, 2009 at 4:20 PM

I had to check. Here’s the free cellphone commercial.

You are eligible if you receive benefits from one of the following programs:

Federal Public Housing Assistance / Section 8
Food Stamps
Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
National School Lunch (free program only)
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
Medicaid
State Blind Pension

I looked at the plan details from the carrier buying the ad time for a couple of states where it provides service. It’s 40-80 minutes per month of free airtime. These carriers must be making a mint by billing the govt full price for the free phones that they are giving out. I bet you get a new one each year too.

rw on February 23, 2009 at 4:20 PM

The woman claimed that millions of homes are foreclosed every day. Assuming that was just 2 million per day, the entire country would be homeless mid year. I think this number belongs with Pelosi’s “500 million jobs lost every month” figure in the “exaggerations that make no sense” bin.

I also don’t understand why people are complaining about these loans being predatory. You could say that the bank made a bad decision and lent money to someone that would not likely be able to pay it back, but, all the banks are asking for (in the case of foreclosure – the bailout being a different though related matter) is that they be given the house back so that they can try to resale it. That’s how a loan works and I don’t see anything predatory about this. It’s not like they went to small children or developmentally disabled people and got them to sign on to a loan – that would be predatory. This is just gambling on long odds.

The only people I feel sorry for in this are the people that took loans that they could afford but are now unable to afford them due to loss of a job or death/injury of a primary provider. My guess is that those people are so few in number that it would be quite easy for charity groups to help them out and the government wouldn’t even need to be involved.

JadeNYU on February 23, 2009 at 4:20 PM

And when Obama’s plan does not work, his spin doctors will simply say, “Thanks to the failed economic policies of the Bush administration, the problem was a lot worse than we expected so we’ll have to spend even more money to help these poor people.”

Stuart’s the man.

Esthier on February 23, 2009 at 4:23 PM

Also, does she realize that actions like these will make it much, much harder for folks on the border line to get a loan in the future?

It’s one thing to take a risk on someone who might not be able to repay the full loan if you’re only going to have to deal with the legal hassle of foreclosure.

It’s another thing entirely if you risk having them get a band of thugs together and squat in the house YOU LEGALLY OWN and refuse to leave.

Simple analysis:

I am far happier to pay for these idiots to live in a jail cell (for trespassing, etc.) than I am to pay for them to stay in homes that they cannot afford and should never have gotten in the first place.

What has blood shooting out of my eyes is that fact that ACORN still exists as a legal entity. Voter fraud, burglary, trespassing, inciting felonies… yet they have their very own piece of pork carved out of Spendulus. Meanwhile, paying your bills and earning money have become criminal behavior that must be punished by any means necessary.

Ms. Lewis has recently used her clout to help derail one controversial development plan, Starrett City, and assist another, Atlantic Yards. This past summer, she helped 60,000 child care providers win the right to unionize

From NY Post:

By 2004, the developer’s company, Forest City Ratner, had begun to fork over thousands of dollars to NAN. Sharpton now strongly supports Ratner’s proposed Atlantic Yards project, which includes a new arena for the New Jersey Nets.

Wonder how much money Forest City Ratner gave Ms. Lewis?

Pelosi intends to keep meddling:

The leader of the U.S. House of Representatives said on Monday lawmakers expect to begin debating legislation this week that would let judges erase some mortgage debt for borrowers who file for bankruptcy.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Democratic leaders hope to bring mortgage bankruptcy legislation known as the “cramdown” bill to the House floor on Thursday.

Spruiell’s comments on this:

Broadly speaking, this would mean higher interest rates on home loans for everyone from here on out. If bankruptcy judges can write down the principal on home loans, banks will adjust interest rates upward to account for the increased risk. Even economists who favor the cramdown are frank about this — they just think that the negative effects of foreclosures are worse than the the price we will all have to pay for this sweeping legislative change…

Now, maybe higher interest rates on home loans would be a good thing. Home ownership is heavily subsidized in this country, and the reason bankruptcy law currently protects banks from losses on principal is so that they can keep mortgage-interest rates low. But is Congress really going to let mortgage-interest rates rise as a result of this new law? Liberal interest groups already think credit-card interest rates are a crime against humanity. Can you imagine the hue and cry whenever mortgage-interest rates start to tick up?

The more likely scenario is that Congress passes some new law that keeps mortgage-interest rates suppressed, even though the new bankruptcy law has exposed banks to greater risk. If your goal is to re-inflate the housing bubble and create another credit catastrophe, well, there you go.

Welcome to bizzaro world, where only the losers get rewarded. Even American Express has decided to award the deadbeats by giving them a $300 prepaid card if they’ll only agree to pay off their debt.

Nothing for us who always pay in full on time, though.

Excellent. Why should anyone have to be responsible for normal wear and tear and market fluctuations in housing prices when they can get the government to step in and make sure their house is always worth at least what they paid for it, and if not, bail them out? My parents, may they rest in peace, never sold a home that was worth more than what they paid for it until the late 80s. It was a given way back when that when you bought a house it was NOT going to be worth as much as you paid for it years later, any more than your car would be. What we have is a nation of people who think they’re entitled to, well, entitlements.

The “700″ billion the ACORN criminal kept spouting about….a few facts:

1.Feds Forced the Banks: The bank were mostly forced to take the money (in the case of BoFA, they eagerly gobbled it up because they are near failure)

2. Loan Vs Stock Sale: The money wasn’t GIVEN to the banks, the banks were forced to sell preferred stock to the Govt. Therefore, it wasn’t a loan, or a handout, it was an exchange of value.

3.Intended use of the 700 Billion: The original 700 billion was used to buy that preferred stock in hopes the banks would lend it out. It was NOT given to the banks so those banks would pay the loans of irresponsible borrowers

4. Feds Forced Predatory Lending: I will not excuse banks of their share of predatory lending. It happens, but not as often as you might think. There are many laws, enforced laws, that banks must obey in regards to lending. But the Feds, through pressure from ACORN no less, forced banks to create and sell predatory loans. Then the Govt said they would back those loans by having Freddie and Fannie buy them–thus removing a normal bank’s fear of selling risky loans.

Again, this mortgage situation was caused by Govt. It was manipulated by ACORN and now both groups are acting like the saviors. This is disgusting.

ACORN is a thoroughly corrupt organization. That news casters did a great job of speaking plain truth to the ACORN criminal. He pulled no punches and all she could do was ignore his facts and spout populist drivel.

Golly, Kiddo. That was a long walk from (or overcrowded car drive) the Rio Grande. Are there very many “non-papered” immigrants up there?

I’ve always liked Stuart Varney. He seems to be a stand up guy.

She keeps calling these people “homeowners” and talking about how they have the “right to defend their homes”. But if they didn’t pay for the homes, then they don’t own the homes, and they aren’t “their” homes.

I bit the bullet and clicked the link to the HuffPo article. This lady is simply a moron. What I was amazed at was the comment section. Either some HA readers got to it or HuffPo libs have gotten some sense. Every post (that I can recall) were basically saying the same thing, that ACORN is breaking the law and should stop the thuggish actions. These comments blew my mind!

I lost my job in 2000, and I could no longer make the payments. To avoid adversarial foreclosure, I signed voluntary foreclosure (similar to a quit claim in some places). I did kiss about $10,000 in equity good-bye. I found a new job and moved into an apartment in another state. (The voluntary foreclosure was not placed on my credit report.)

Now I have almost enough saved where I can buy what once was a $200,000 house for about $125,000 or less.

baby capitalism was all part of the design. you see, there is a natural progression for society…from ape like to anarchic to feudal to capitalistic and finally to socialistic. of course we needed capitalism to find all those things worth turning into what we now call our standard of living and culture…but sooner or later the playing field is leveled and a new process begins…

expect it ;-)

You’re talking about his T-groups on gubmit thrift?

Gubmit by committe has been replaced by gubmit by T-group. Yes, it’s profoundly childish, but it’s vintage ‘community organizer’.

You know what they call a person who can’t afford a mortgage? RENTER
You know what happens if you don’t pay your rent? You get EVICTED!
There are just as many renters losing their jobs and now their taxes will go to keep others in their unaffordable homes? This is INSANITY.
