I would be willing to wager that some professor said "For extra-credit go join a protest to exercise your first amendment right." The moronic kids decide to get the full amount of credit and think of creating their own protest to voice their opposition to everything that said professor has been talking about in class. That is the only thing I can think of that joins all of the students demands together. Anyone else have another idea?
