Arnold to Sanford and Jindal: I vill take de stimulus money if you don’t want it
posted at 6:02 pm on February 22, 2009 by Allahpundit
Two videos, one from this morning and the other from 1990, tracking the evolution of a Republican icon. I’m no expert on Milton Friedman, but I imagine he’d find the “emergency” rationale for higher taxes rather highly nuanced indeed.
Exit question: When Schwarzenegger calls on the GOP to be “team players” by acquiescing in The One’s agenda, how long does he intend for “the game” to last? Until the emergency passes, whenever that is, or for Obama’s entire term?

Blowback

America is a nation of equal opportunity, not equal outcomes.
If you cannot balance your budget, then you deserve to fail. It is a choice. Being responsible is hard work. 92% of mortgage holders sacrifice enough. Other states make difficult choices. You are not a victim simply because you are irresponsible.
Fairness is not penalizing those that are responsible.

Arnold is done in politics so he just has to do what he can to keep people from turning on him for the rest of his term. In the mean time California is hemorrhaging citizens. Soon it’s tax base will be like that of NYC and only the very very wealthy will live there.

This is why you *never* idolize a politician, no matter who they are. You admire or criticize their policies and that’s it. Because, no doubt, somewhere along the line, they are going to either completely change their minds or go against a previously held belief or flat out lie.
This goes for President Bush, B.O., Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal, Newt Gingrich, Michael Steele, whomever. *No* politician is worthy of whooping and hollaring over and idolizing.
Lots of GOP-voters were whooping and cheering the “Governator” back when and now he’s nothing but a big fat leftist RINO. Brilliant. The same thing is going to happen with all the other GOP “heros” and “saviors” of the moment. They are not heros or saviors or celebrities or idols, they are merely government servants and should be treated and critiqued as such.
By cheering and idolizing any of these putzes, they end up with huge egos and thinking they can do whatever they please.

Word is that he’ll apply Osama Obama’s “stimulus” counterfeit money to keeping the flow of wasteful government programs going. He has already given the state’s largest government employee union a no-layoff guarantee.

Seems every time Arnie opens his cigar-blue mouth he loses more and more conservative credibility.
If he had any left, that is.
Did not one catch the SC governor on Fox News Sunday compare AP’s The One to Stalin!?! He said just ’cause Obama says the plan will create 50,000 doesn’t make it a reality. It is comparable to “Stalin” saying so many thousands of jobs would be created. You have to look at the source.
A true conservative moderator WOULD post that instead of some goofy Austrian, wash-up actor/governator saying something so predictable at this point!
How about it, AP – post something that rallies instead of demoralizes!
klickink.wordpress.com on February 22, 2009 at 6:27 PM
You should look at that statement before you make yourself look more foolish than normal. Spending money the government doesn’t have and will not be able to raise by raising taxes, thereby starving the engine of production, certainly is not going to help the economy recover. Sooner or later the well will run dry and this socialist experiment will fail. Or are you planning on kicking off in the next 2-4 years?

On the one hand, we gotta cut the guy some slack. The country as a whole has troubles vocally opposing Obama’s initiatives. It’s even harder to do that in California, where the liberal leanings are higher, and the problems are deeper. So if we try and pick a Governor to demand conservative purity from, I say Schwarzenegger should pretty low on our list.
That being said, whatever his personal position is, he shouldn’t torpedo others’ attempts to stick to conservative principles. There is an argument to be made that Jindal and Sanford are making. Surely, there’s no argument to be made in defense of the idea that the entire country will now start bailing out only California.
So if you feel like you’re not in a position to join Jindal, do your thing but shut up.

Unlike overpaid folks in Hollywood, Silicon Valley has given folks the most innovative products in the world – starting from the microprocessors to amazing search engines, and which, incidentally, survive in a ruthless environment without *BAILOUTS*. Are you talking about politicians only? If not, I have seen many D->R transformations too, specially among college students as they age and take on more responsibilities. Another class I have seen (and there may or may not be data to support this) is first generation immigrants, who start as liberals, and become conservative once they gain financial success.
peter_griffin on February 22, 2009 at 6:55 PM
Being a resident of California, it is a wonder how we, as a state, can continue to take out loans to subsidize the budget. What I’m rather curious about is how much of the proposed cuts the legislature worked out are real, legitimate cuts, or are they just cuts in the increase in spending. There is difference. For now, I will presume it is the latter.
It just gets better and better here, budget wise, as time goes on. The state, once again, had to take out loans to make up for the deficit spending. Since we as a state have already reached junk bond rating for loans, bonds, etc. I am just wondering how many more years the state will be able to take out loans to help “eliminate” deficit spending. Perhaps the Feds, once banks are nationalized, will just continue to give CA more loans every year, thus handing over more and more state sovereignty because of conditions laid out in ever Fed hand out.
Meanwhile, demographically speaking, the wealth continues to flee CA in preparation not just for the soon-to-be executed tax hikes, but many other new laws that will essentially punish business owners for owning a business. The wealth moves out and the poor move in.
I just hope to finish my degree and get the hell out of dodge. The South looks much more promising job wise and I’d be around traditional valued people. This place is a loony bin.

Tooth Fairy Economics
In his recent press conference, President Obama cited the case of Japan as if it were evidence for his side of the argument. Exactly the opposite is true. Japan has done everything to itself that our government has done and is threatening to do to us, and with no results. From partial nationalization of its banking system to “stimulus” packages amounting to trillions of yen, from propping up zombie companies and dropping interest rates to zero, they’ve tried it all.
Naturally, the Keynesian response is that Japan simply didn’t spend enough. Oh? Thanks to the misnamed “stimulus” packages that the Japanese government imposed on its hapless people, Japan is the most indebted country in the developed world. So becoming the most indebted country in the developed world — and that’s saying something — still isn’t enough spending for Keynesians?
What would be enough, then? A quadrillion dollars? A googol dollars? Infinity minus one dollars? It’d be interesting to know what “stimulus” figure might make a Keynesian declare, “Now that’s too much!”
If there’s one silver lining to the crisis, it’s that more and more people are figuring out that so-called respectable opinion has been dead wrong, and for a long time. The economics profession, by and large, has embarrassed itself with a Keynesianism so crude it would not satisfy a bright sixth-grader. People trotted out as experts, who failed to see the crisis coming and have no idea how it occurred — “excessive risk-taking!” they say, in a non-explanation that merely begs the question — have no idea how to solve it.
