Glenn Beck: The end of America is nigh, maybe

posted at 4:18 pm on February 21, 2009 by Allahpundit

Even before watching this, if you’d asked me which media star’s most likely to turn survivalist, move to the mountains, and start doing his show from a lead-lined bunker, there’s no doubt what the answer would have been. There’s something “off” about Beck in a way that’s not true of other chat-show hosts, although that’s not necessarily a criticism: O’Reilly and Hannity can be tiresome in more than small doses but this guy I find watchable even at a stretch. Partly it’s the sheer bravado of the performance, partly it’s the challenge of trying to figure out what’s going on in his head to make him the way he is. As big an audience as he has, I’m surprised it’s not bigger. He’s one of a kind.

I’m giving you all three segments from yesterday’s show; if you’re only up for one, stick with number three. Nothing they’re saying is terribly implausible, frankly — except maybe the idea that in five years NYC will look like Mexico City or Baghdad — but because the tone of Beck’s show is always somewhat febrile, it’s hard to know how seriously to take any of it. Segment two, at least, is very serious indeed. If you’re hungry for dessert afterwards, try his appearance on Fox & Friends yesterday morning to promote this show, in which he talks about his hands shaking and frightens Gretchen into hiding under the couch. Like I say, one of a kind.

Update 2/22: A couple of lefty readers e-mailed to ask if I find any of this crap credible. Answer: No, except for the scenario sketched out in segment two about Iran targeting Saudi oil installations in the event of regional war. That’s why I singled it out as serious. I should have been more careful, though, in saying that nothing here is terribly implausible, which I wrote with the inflation bit at the beginning in mind. Segment three certainly is implausible; when I said it’s the one to watch, it’s because it’s nutty and most emblematic of that “lead-lined bunker” mentality. Apologies if that was ambiguous. I’m not stocking up on canned goods, I promise.

Repeating one disaster after another. Why??

Cody1991 on February 21, 2009 at 7:24 PM

Yes, he must sacrifice our defenses, punish those that provide jobs and growth and periodically rape the treasury in order to pay for and support all the whiny, nonproductive slugs in the sick society. He warned the country that he would redistribute the wealth but the enlightened voters were simply to stupid to understand the impact of such an act.

A significant percentage of Americans have lost up to half or more of their pension funds. Juarez Mexico, just across the river from ElPAso cannot keep their top law enforcement people in office because they are slaughtered or forced to resign for fear of their lives and their families. Anarchy already exists within 1 mile of our unprotected border. If a small dirty bomb went off in one of our cities this country would go berserk. If truckers couldn’t deliver groceries to your supermarket, what do you think would happen? He was right we don’t know how to take care of ourselves. You better visit a gun show near you this month.

When I first heard Glenn Beck over a decade ago…………..on an AM radio station driving through Nashville……………his speech was dotted with long pregnant pauses…………….as though he was sipping on a martini between thoughts (and yes, I know…………Glenn Beck…………is a recovering………….alcoholic). ……………. Even though I agreed with a lot of what he said……………this taking on vocal affelctions for style over substance……………made me wonder…………..how much is really Glenn Beck in his core beliefs…………..and how much if Glenn Beck the radio performer…………..who knows conservative talk radio…………..is the best way to success in the………………talk radio game.

Actually, I am beginning to think that, just before the world ends, there will only be two nations,,, Israel and Islam. The rest of the world will go Islamic,, because Israel seems to be the only nation that takes them seriously. Everyone else will fall. Then it will be the entire world against little Israel.

“And I saw thrones, and they that sat on them. And judgment was given to them, and to the souls of the ones having been beheaded because of the witness of Jesus, and because of the Word of God, and who had not worshiped the beast nor its image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand. Revelation 20:4

Growing up,, when I first read this, beheadings were like nowhere,, ancient history. How curious that beheadings are in the news now,, and one of the primary forms of execution for Islamic terrorists. And how curious that the entire western world now seems to want to sit down and befriend our enemies.
And here is another juicy morsel,, Glen has said our military has been training for operations right here. Here is a nice story,, I have highlighted some points:

It will be important for us to gain the trust and confidence of the residents of Arcadia,” Sgt. Mike Kots, readiness NCO for Alpha Company, told Carroll’s Daily Times Herald. “We will need to identify individuals that are willing to assist us in training by allowing us to search their homes and vehicles and to participate in role-playing.

…told WND that the operation has now been “scaled back” and no longer involves an “invasion” of Arcadia.

…the Guard had been inundated with objections from citizens concerned about soldiers patrolling the streets of an American town,

On April 4 convoys were to be deployed from the armory in Carroll to nearby Arcadia, where soldiers would knock on doors, showing a picture of the invented “arms dealer.”

“Once credible intelligence has been gathered,” said Kots, “portions of the town will be road-blocked and more in-depth searches of homes and vehicles will be conducted in accordance with the residents’ wishes.

“We ask for the head of the household, get permission to search, then have them open doors and cupboards. The homeowner maintains control. We peer over their shoulder, and the soldier uses the homeowner’s body language and position to protect him.

I like that part about the soldier using the home owners body for protection. I see why they needed to use the towns people for training. Human shields are hard to come by.

The first end of the world I remember was the Cuban Missile Crisis. My dad had can food and sleeping bags in a paved crawl space at our house. In school we had drills kneeling on the floor head covered (?) from the nuclear attack. There have been a series of doomsday scenarios since that I have ignored. I have a friend who bought a pallet of MRE’s during Y2K, I wonder if he is wishing he had not forced himself to eat them all. Usually it is the media hyping this stuff but even if it were real this time they won’t see it because they are blinded by their adulation of the President and his leadership. I am not quite sure that I believe in what Mr. Beck is saying but I must admit that I am making plans and purchases that I never would have considered before. So I guess I am just this side of crazy.

End of the world . . . who knows? On the other hand, it is highly probable that we are beginning to see the end of a once great Republic. The signs of national socialism are everywhere and the current regime is working at a frantic pace to bring down the only thing that truly separated us from the rest of the world’s economies . . . our powerful free market, capitalistic system. We are being destroyed from within and I have yet to see even a single national leader with the courage to expose Obama’s charade. As I’ve stated in another post . . . if you’re not scarred yet, start heading in that direction.

What Beck is saying is not exclusively his own thinking. There are a growing number of economists and financial analysts who belong to this school of thought, popularized recently by Peter Schiff (who made his name by predicting the recent financial meltdown).

As Beck said repeatedly during that show, those were not predictions. They are war game scenarios, scenarios the MSM would like us to ignore. I for one am taking these prospects very seriously. So I’m acting upon them also.

JellyToast on February 21, 2009 at 7:44 PM

I’ll tell you what I see happening:

The West is going to leave Iran for Israel to take care of (even though Iran is a threat to all). That way, after Israel handles Iran, the West (including the US with the idiot messiah and the lunatic Congress leading us) will then try to strangle Israel to death – blaming Israel for the economic problems to come, declaring all sorts of war crimes against Israel, decrees that Israel is racist (Durban II now has US sponsorship to get it going), embargoes and probably blockading the state until it shrivels and dies or is put to death by an invasion/mass attack by the surrounding arab states and terrorist groups. There is even a chance of active attacks on Israel from the West (seeing that Samantha Powers is one of the idiot messiah’s chief advisors). Jews around most of the world will be attacked, killed or expelled (we got to see a small taste of this with the reactions during the Gaza operation). Israel is well aware that this is the likely scenario, I think.

This would have been totally unthinkable … until the idiot messiah got in, with his band of lunatics in Congress. Europe was always interested in seeing Israel destroyed, but the US was a stalwart ally and supporter – until now. This last election brought this scenario to a thinkable level – a likely level, even – but Israel will have no choice.

The other possibility is that Israel does nothing, Iran finally nukes Israel, and once Israel is gone, the whole middle east breaks into savage warfare with each other, totally destroying everything there, rendering the oil fields unusable for anyone. In addition, without Israel, the forces that had concentrated on it would turn their attention to Europe and the US, in a big way, and the West would finally see the war in its full glory, up close and personal.

Glenn needs to keep the “wargaming” stuff in perspective and work his schtick more toward things will revive the country, not morbidly calculate its many possible dark alleys and get off on telling scary stories …which is the standard Paul Erlich cum Global Gore route of hysteria science.

The US only needs to secure its borders and the rest will naturally restore itself to equilibrium.

profitsbeard on February 21, 2009 at 8:21 PM

A few thoughts. The Democrats are in power and will drive to pursue and complete their agenda as fast and recklessly as possible.

Obama is on the road to nationalize the car companies and banks and that will lower the barriers to nationalize other important industries such as oil companies.

Minority blacks that have been inculculated with the idea they are victims and owed by the whites will push for positions of power and like other black control cities will deteriorate like Atlanta under Young, DC under Barry.

Gangs and criminal class will continue to prey on the easy targets like their own undefended brethern in the poor areas and the whites will continue to enclave in secure gated communities.

Over 10 going on 27 states are adopting 10th amendment resolutions which is a warning to the federal government not to overstep, yet the blind Pelos / Obama will charge ahead creating a revolt by states.

Mexico on the border will explode and refugees will run across the border to flee the lawlessness. Border landowners will take action. Militias will form and the border states will back this since the federal government failed in its obligation to secure our southern border.

The reckless spending will result in inflation.

The continuing socialization and restrictions on day to day freedom and perceived attacks on gun rights will drive revolts. Just the last week the mass protests about porkulous and Santelli rant have struck a nerve that is also repeated in states leglislatures with the 10th amendment resolutions.

Now this may settle down but with the recession and other countires restive adventurism will cause problems.

America is overstretched with the debt from Bush trying to stave this severe downturn that should have started in 2001 from the 9/11 attacks. But instead we were encouaged to spend and a bubble economy resulted. It worked for a while but the ponzi schemes are failing.

So Beck’s scary scenarios have some possibilities but like a rubber band America has a tendency to snap back and this overreach will be corrected. Hopefully that will happen in 2010. But The GOP may also clueless and make the same errors.

(Durban II now has US sponsorship to get it going)

Caroline Glicks’ latest article sheds light on this issue:

Column One: Obama’s Durban gambit

In addition, without Israel, the forces that had concentrated on it would turn their attention to Europe and the US, in a big way, and the West would finally see the war in its full glory, up close and personal.

That is already happening. The argument that the Islamic war against Israel is a distraction from the Islamic war against Europe and the US is no longer operable now that mass immigration of Muslims into the West has made the latter war inevitable.

Cody1991 on February 21, 2009 at 7:34 PM

Sir, both Rush and Levin are way behind the curve on this. They have been touting the “great economy” for years while Beck, Schiff, Celente have been telling the world that this is a fake, debt/consumer based economy. Rush always looks for an article that cites some temporary economic good news, and then states that this is just a regular down cycle. How many times just last week were they saying “This is not the great depression, that is a lie,” yet it is so obvious we stand at the precipice and are saying that it is not the great depression YET!

Having been a listener of both those gentlemen for years I know exactly where they’re coming from. Only recently have they started alluding to the seriousness of our current economic situation, only recently are they beginning to realize that we are on the precipice.

This situation is far from a normal economic downturn as they have both stated, this is close to economic Armageddon. Something that only a change in currency might be able to solve, and when they change the currency the first thing they will take out is In God We Trust.

If you live near a city, hard times will likely bring you more burglary, looting and thievery (as a function of population density, for openers). Get a defense weapon, while you still can buy them, and a German Shepherd, maybe from a rescue shelter. Your dog will give you a decade or more of exuberant companionship, as well as safety. As for the gun, if you don’t want to keep it after ten years, you can probably sell it (maybe on the black market or trade by barter) for 20+ times what you paid for it. Guns will appreciate in this country like gold.

Seems to me like a no-lose move.

I agree for the most part, aengus, but I still think that Israel currently shields the West from quite a bit of arab/persian/muslim aggression that is concentrated on destroying Israel. I think that the muslims are actually surprised that Europe has been capitulating so rapidly – seemingly for no reason. Besides that, I think that arabs fighting each other (and against the persian forces) would go up exponentially if Israel were gone. Middle Eastern countries fighting each other would leave a gaping hole where the lifeblood of the world comes from – as arabs fight total scorched Earth strategies. But you are certainly right, the muslim fight in Europe is inevitable, either way.

Glenn soft-pedaled the extent of the crisis in this country. The mob and the elites are looting it and our “representitives” are helping them. The media is a propaganda machine and the elections are rigged.

People who have been responsible and played by the rules are being mocked by an illegitimate government that rewards incompetence to buy votes. And the people are coming to realize it.

The nation is a powder keg. Just one good spark will do it.

FEMA tells everyone that they need at least 3 days worth of supplies.

Whether it be natural disasters or man made you are the first line of protection for you, your family and neighbors. Don’t expect local, state or federal sources to bail your rear out. It will be on you. Thus you need to prepare. Look no further than those poor souls in Kentucky with the ice storm. Florida or New Orleans with the hurricanes. Either be prepared and survive or unprepared and at the mercy of others.

I remember reading an article out of England where the author stated that we are only 3 days of meals from anarchy. Look at how much or how little food you or your neighbors have on hand.

If you don’t live out in a rural area, get to know family or friends that do in case of the worst. The Bubba Effect is real, if you don’t believe ask those who live out.

As always, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

aps on February 21, 2009 at 8:50 PM

I agree for the most part, aengus, but I still think that Israel currently shields the West from quite a bit of arab/persian/muslim aggression that is concentrated on destroying Israel.

I wonder though if some of it is a headfake. It is presumed by everyone that Iran is developing nuclear weapons in order to destroy Israel exclusively but in the end that is only a guess.

And Jack Straw’s mullah-coddling is particularly unworthy in that, insofar as Iran has a strategy, the president’s chief adviser, Hassan Abbassi, has based it on the premise that “Britain is the mother of all evils” – the evils being America, Australia, Israel, the Gulf states and even Canada and New Zealand, all of which are the malign progeny of the British Empire.

Besides that, I think that arabs fighting each other (and against the persian forces) would go up exponentially if Israel were gone.

No disagreement here. Particularly because of the religious nature of the conflict. The Muslims would believe that Allah has granted victory and thus compelled them to push for all-out victory (Islamic domination of the entire earth).

Oh jeez… I just watched the first video, with the Liberty dollar, talking about how Bernard was (briefly) put in jail. I haven’t followed that case closely, but Bernard von NotHaus, the Liberty dollar inventor, is now the pastor or head priest or whatever of the “Free Marijuana Church” in Hawaii whose sacrament is to smoke pot. I’ve had lunch with the man; he comes across as perfectly normal… for a while. It’s one thing to just buy silver, but I was always amazed people trusted him with their money for the electronic version of the currency.

Beck vs. O’Reilly:

Beck: Only mentions the sweater book occasionally
O’Reilly: Give that man a copy of Bold Fresh.

I swing from despising O’Reilly to occasionally appreciating him and here’s why: He does seem able to listen and learn from others. When Megan Kelly kicked his ass on the Seattle Christmas issue, he knew he had been beaten and by a woman, no less. So he had her come back on, each time trying to best her (actually, to equal her). So it was obnoxious. But at the same time, he really did listen to her arguments.

Bill’s all about Bill, for sure and his Paul Revere stuff is so gay I can’t believe it, but he isn’t all bad.

Glenn’s has a vision that’s bigger than just him. I don’t always agree with it, but at least he transcends Glenn Beck.

After All These Things, Then The Heavens (Planets, Stars, Galaxies, Et Al…) Shall Go Through Major Events “The Heavens Shall Melt With Fervent Heat” & “The Heavens Shall Make A Great Noise, A Hissing Sound” “The Sun Shall Be Darkened, And The Moon Shall Not Give Her Light” “The Stars Shall Fall From Heaven” It Is Interesting To Note (Through Recent Advances) That We are Currently Seeing Space Images A Lot Of People Never Dreamed Were Possible (Scientists Are Amazed At The Sights). I Believe This Is Part Of Mankind Seeing The Pieces Coming Together. The Bible States That IMMEDIATELY After The Heavens Go Through These Events “Then Shall The Sign Of The Son Of Man Appear In The Heavens, And Mankind Shall See The Son Coming In Great Power And Clouds Of Glory” “And The Tribes Of The Earth Shall Mourn, And He Shall Then Direct His Angels To Gather His Elect From The Four Corners Of The World”. I Consider The Bible The Best Indicator Of What Events Shall Lead To The End Times. Jesus Said, When You See These Things You Will Know The End Is At Hand, But Only GOD Knows The DAY And The HOUR.

I agree. Christopher Hitchens succinctly stated that the Palestinians are not motivated by despair (as everyone pretends) but by religious fever.

It’s a sort of paradox that stern agressivness of a kind does more to prevent wars than start them. It can never be proved if applied effectively, but it’s true nonetheless.

Yes the military will fire on American citizens.

The self-named Bonus Expeditionary Force was an assemblage of some 43,000 marchers — 17,000 World War I veterans, their families, and affiliated groups, who protested in Washington, D.C., in spring and summer of 1932. Called the Bonus March by the news media, the Bonus Marchers were more popularly known as the Bonus Army. The war veterans sought immediate, cash payment of Service

On 28 July, 1932, Attorney General Mitchell ordered the police evacuation of the Bonus Army veterans, who resisted; the police shot at them, and killed two. When told of the killings, President Hoover ordered the U.S. Army to effect the evacuation of the Bonus Army from Washington, D.C.

At 4:45 p.m., commanded by Gen. Douglas MacArthur, the 12th Infantry Regiment, Fort Howard, Maryland, and the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, supported by six battle tanks commanded by Maj. George S. Patton, Fort Myer, Virginia, formed in Pennsylvania Avenue while thousands of Civil Service employees left work to line the street and watch the U.S. Army attack its own veterans. The Bonus Marchers, believing the display was in their honour, cheered the troops until Maj. Patton charged the cavalry against them — an action which prompted the Civil Service employee spectators to yell, “Shame! Shame!”

After the cavalry charge, infantry, with fixed bayonets and adamsite gas, entered the Bonus Army camps, evicting veterans, families, and camp followers. The veterans fled across the Anacostia River, to their largest camp; President Hoover ordered the Army assault stopped, however, Gen. MacArthur—feeling this free-speech exercise was a Communist attempt at overthrowing the U.S. Government—ignored the President and ordered a new attack. Hundreds of veterans were injured, several were killed — including William Hushka and Eric Carlson; a veteran’s wife miscarried; and many other veterans were hurt.

@Alana – yes. And even though some in the video made comments along the lines of “I can’t believe I’m taking guns away from American citizens,” nobody that I’m aware of dug their heels in and said “This is unconstitutional and I’m not doing it.” If they had… that would have been another whole can of worms. The people who gave those orders were never held accountable in any way for it.

A guy at my church co-wrote a book about the gun grab. It’s terrifying to think of people forced to give up their rights at the point of a gun, and since it happened here, it can certainly happen at the next disaster scene.

He (while warning us of what could happen) should heed one of his principles that he’s hyping about. The one that says that God should be the center of our lives.

If he beleives that God is the center of everything, then he must know that God is in control. Everything that’s happeneing is happening for a reason.

I had always assumed that Christians would be taken from the earth before the Great Tribulation, but it seems like it may be starting as we speak, er, write. And if so, the quote below will be coming to pass within a few short years.
Naysayers may scoff, but who would have thought a few decades ago that all the nations of the earth would gather to make war against Jerusalem!

Zechariah 14:2 For I will get all the nations together to make war against Jerusalem; and the town will be overcome, and the goods taken from the houses, and the women taken by force: and half the town will go away as prisoners, and the rest of the people will not be cut off from the town.
3 Then the Lord will go out and make war against those nations, as he did in the day of the fight.
4 And in that day his feet will be on the Mount of Olives, which is opposite Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives will be parted in the middle to the east and to the west, forming a very great valley; and half the mountain will be moved to the north and half of it to the south.
5 And the valley will be stopped… and you will go in flight as you went in flight from the earth-shock in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah: and the Lord my God will come, and all his holy ones with him.
6 And in that day there will be no heat or cold or ice;
7 And it will be unbroken day, such as the Lord has knowledge of, without change of day and night, and even at nightfall it will be light.
8 ¶And on that day living waters will go out from Jerusalem; half of them flowing to the sea on the east and half to the sea on the west: in summer and in winter it will be so.
9 And the Lord will be King over all the earth: in that day there will be one Lord and his name one.

I’m a big Beck supporter, hell, I’m an Insider. But for as sound as I think he is on a number of issues, there’s one question that keeps nagging me.

If he really believes things are this dire, then why does he still play the corporate media game?

Why didn’t he have Santelli on? Why doesn’t he reach out to Dobbs or Scarborough? Why doesn’t he go on Charlie Rose or take on Matthews directly? Whether you like the people I listed or not, is irrelevant. The issue is sincerity. If I truly believed that things were over in five years, I’d break every rule to get my message out.

Think about it. Beck believes society as we know it is about to collapse, but that’s not justification for crossing Newscorp policy. How does he not expect this to come across like an angle if he can’t/won’t even go on with Stewart or Colbert?

budfox on February 21, 2009 at 9:54 PM

If we didn’t fall apart at the seams, in spite of the best efforts by the Communists back in the late ’60s, then I’m rather doubtful it will happen now. Not 100%, though.

Still, Conservatives do have a knack for looking at stuff like Ruby Ridge and what happened to Gordon Kahl and Bill Cooper and shrug our shoulders and say, “Well, they probably deserved it.”

I won’t abide it. I’m investing what I can, which believe me isn’t much. There are a lot of companies outside the financial services sector with solid balance sheets. Earnings will recover. VinceP1974 on February 21, 2009 at 5:24 PM

You’re dead on. People in America are way too comfortable as their nation crumbles. I’m sure the Romans never foresaw the fall of their empire either. I love AP, Hannity, etc. but they all seem more focused on getting the GOP back into power than the fact that we are on the brink of calamity. AP’s snarky comments seem more out of anger that someone is rocking the status quo than real criticism. I also think Glenn Beck got it wrong. He was being too optimistic in my opinion. It’s not going to take 5 years for most of the things he talks about to occur. Not with Socialist filth like Obama at the wheel hell bent on steering us to collapse. Why? They want power. The more chaos the more control. And I think Americans are more fed up than all these talking heads realize. People who would normally turn the other cheek are organizing protests. Violence is coming if the Federal Government doesn’t get back to the business of following the constitution and the will of the people. And its coming soon I fear.
