Glenn Beck: The end of America is nigh, maybe
posted at 4:18 pm on February 21, 2009 by Allahpundit
Even before watching this, if you’d asked me which media star’s most likely to turn survivalist, move to the mountains, and start doing his show from a lead-lined bunker, there’s no doubt what the answer would have been. There’s something “off” about Beck in a way that’s not true of other chat-show hosts, although that’s not necessarily a criticism: O’Reilly and Hannity can be tiresome in more than small doses but this guy I find watchable even at a stretch. Partly it’s the sheer bravado of the performance, partly it’s the challenge of trying to figure out what’s going on in his head to make him the way he is. As big an audience as he has, I’m surprised it’s not bigger. He’s one of a kind.
I’m giving you all three segments from yesterday’s show; if you’re only up for one, stick with number three. Nothing they’re saying is terribly implausible, frankly — except maybe the idea that in five years NYC will look like Mexico City or Baghdad — but because the tone of Beck’s show is always somewhat febrile, it’s hard to know how seriously to take any of it. Segment two, at least, is very serious indeed. If you’re hungry for dessert afterwards, try his appearance on Fox & Friends yesterday morning to promote this show, in which he talks about his hands shaking and frightens Gretchen into hiding under the couch. Like I say, one of a kind.
Update 2/22: A couple of lefty readers e-mailed to ask if I find any of this crap credible. Answer: No, except for the scenario sketched out in segment two about Iran targeting Saudi oil installations in the event of regional war. That’s why I singled it out as serious. I should have been more careful, though, in saying that nothing here is terribly implausible, which I wrote with the inflation bit at the beginning in mind. Segment three certainly is implausible; when I said it’s the one to watch, it’s because it’s nutty and most emblematic of that “lead-lined bunker” mentality. Apologies if that was ambiguous. I’m not stocking up on canned goods, I promise.

ElRonaldo, I remember a few news reports back in the late 70s where the IRS was trying to get control of the barter economy. An example given was a dentist would do dental work for a plumber who would in exchange do some plumbing work. The IRS wanted to tax the plumber for the value of the dental work and tax the dentist for the value of the plumbing job. I have not heard the IRS squawk about this economy in a loooong time. It seems that the IRS has stopped pursuing this. My opinion is that the IRS does not want to get into the territory where barter is not income, but an exchange. It would lead to wages not being income, but an exchange.

Glen Beck does us a great service just by having the balls to say the things he does, and present the what if’s that no other person has the balls to do. You don’t have to agree, but you do need to listen and just once, open your mind and allow yourself to ask’ what if?’ OR you can listen to the pundits and talking heads and lying commie lefties and assume (we all know what that means) that all will be well. I hope so, but for the sake of my beautiful grandkids, I am going to listen, and act in a way that will hopefully make the coming storm alittle easier for them. We are not going to suffer because of this lying racsist commie in the WH, they are. Stop being so damned petty and selfish and use your head for more than just a hatrack…*sigh*

I voted Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I’ve decided to marry my horse.
I voted Democrat because I believe oil companies’ profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% isn’t.
I voted Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.
I voted Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.
I voted Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq I trust that the bad guys will stop what they’re doing because they now think we’re good people.
I voted Democrat because I’m way too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves.
I voted Democrat because I believe that people who can’t tell us if it will rain on Friday can tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don’t start driving a Prius.
I voted Democrat because I’m not concerned about the slaughter of millions of babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.
I voted Democrat because I believe that businesses should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see fit.
I voted Democrat because I believe liberal judges need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would never get their agendas past the voters.

Best part of Glenn Beck’s show last night was the end. He talks to a survivalist expert (who studied cases of people surviving all kinds of obstacles). The truth he discovered is you can survive any catastrophy in life with three basic things.
1. Faith in God
2. Faith in Family
3. Faith in Friends and Neighbors (your community)
Whatever the future holds there will always be hope in these three things.
God Bless Us All
dddave on February 21, 2009 at 6:17 PM
One thing that is fun is how much Glenn reads history and explains it to his listeners. Three years ago he did a double decker bus tour of NYC and explained how the UN is built on the old grounds of a slaughterhouse… The stuff does get dark at times but his staff does comic intervention. Glenn tries to stop short of the “beautiful mind” point of stretching yarn across the room to connect photos.
It has however increased my awareness. We’ve got three months of food put away, generator wired up and lots of firewood. To not do so would be to be completely ignorant of history. Society is fragile.

It’s a very frightening book imo. Raspail admitted in an interview a few years ago that the book was really about Muslims immigration specifically. He did not want to make this explicit at the time as the Algerian refugees had already settled in France.
I think that some countries, like the USA, Brazil and the Russian Federation, are more adept at assimilating immigrants than the homogenous cultures of Europe and Asia. But any country eventually suffers from mass immigration if only financially.
When I think of multiculturalism I think of the Tower of Babel. The Tower was built by people who were so proud they even came to worship themselves. Sounds like the multiculuralists.

The Beginning of the End for Investing?
With the Dow Jones Industrial Average making new lows, President Obama may have it exactly right. When he signed the so-called “stimulus” legislation on Tuesday, he said, “today does mark the beginning of the end.”
OK, he meant “the end of our economic problems.” But it was a peculiar choice of words for a man who is supposed to be so eloquent. It’s easily misunderstood — especially since every single effort he, his administration, and Congress have put forth to stabilize the economy has done nothing but drive the stock market lower and lower.
And don’t get me started on the foreclosure relief plan announced this week. On the face of it, it’s nothing but a scheme to get responsible homeowners to pick up the tab for irresponsible ones. We can argue about whether that’s a bitter pill worth swallowing under the circumstances. But let’s not kid ourselves about what it is.
The worst part of it is Obama’s intention to support an initiative in Congress to make mortgage debt subject to reduction in bankruptcy proceedings. Under law now, a home mortgage is a “secured obligation” in bankruptcy, which means a judge can’t arbitrarily force a lender to take reduced payments or principle. But under proposed legislation, a judge could now “cram down” such reductions on the lender — even though every single mortgage in existence today was made on the assumption that such a thing could never happen.
How are we supposed to invest, to plan, to save, to build, to lend, to take risks — when at any moment the government can change the rules of the game? When, at any moment, the government can take the winner’s winnings and give them to the loser?
No wonder stocks are making new lows. Rick Santelli is right. And Obama might be, too. It might be the beginning of the end.

It was Joseph Bruce Ismay, the Managing Director of the White Star Line of steamships.
Here is the poem:
After The Titanic
They said I got away in a boat
And humbled me at the inquiry. I tell you
I sank as far that night as any
Hero. As I sat shivering on the dark water
I turned to ice to hear my costly
Life go thundering down in a pandemonium of
Prams, pianos, sideboards, winches,
Boilers bursting and shredded ragtime. Now I hide
In a lonely house behind the sea
Where the tide leaves broken toys and hat-boxes
Silently at my door. The showers of
April, flowers of May mean nothing to me, nor the
Late light of June, when my gardener
Describes to strangers how the old man stays in bed
On seaward mornings after nights of
Wind, takes his cocaine and will see no-one. Then it is
I drown again with all those dim
Lost faces I never understood. My poor soul
Screams out in the starlight, heart
Breaks loose and rolls down like a stone.
Include me in your lamentations.

To my way of thinking, this is never a bad idea, anyway. And not exclusively because society is fragile – things happen. If you have a backup plan, and never need to use it, fantastic. If you DON’T have one, and you DO need to use it – well, then you’re screwed.

One more thing. Anyone remember Howard Ruff? He wrote “How to Prosper During the Coming Bad Days.” I read it in the late 70′s, bought into it, none of it came true, and then I made the Mormon connection. It really does color their worldview, as everyone’s religion or lack thereof does.

I dunno, the strongest argument from all these guys is that what is to be feared is not another American Revolution, or even Civil War, but another French Revolution with modern weaponry. The rapidly eroding social contract is all anybody has to keep themselves and their families safe. Anybody that lives around a lot of illegals, or a thriving methamphetamine culture (and yes, it is the same thing) knows how fragile everything can be.
As one of Beck’s CIA guests points out, the original intent of the Founders (and Ed Abbey, bless his heart) in framing the 2nd Amendment was that the citizens should be able to defend themselves against their own government.
May God bless and defend the United States of America, the last best hope of mankind.

Don’t confuse Beck the personality with the topic/message that he is exploring. After all, he is able to host some rather credible guest to duscuss the topic(s).
We have a government increasingly grabbing control over our individual lives and reducing our liberties. Witness how many Executive Orders that Obama has signed in a short time. To whom does he answer for those decisions?
Look at the roughshod way that the stimulus bill was written and passed. Did the taxpayers who have a stake in the underwriting of this theft have a say? Did their representatives?
The Supreme Court’s Kelo decision was an early indicator of the disdain our government has for property rights. The arrest of the rancher referred to in the video is an escalation of this disregard for our rights as property owners.
The theft from our paychecks and bank accounts by the Obama/Marxist-inspired government to distribute to the unproductive is happening before our eyes.
Henry Waxman, Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Al Gore etal are determining what kind of cars we are permitted to drive, that we may not use the natural resources that are plentiful in our nation, what kinds of foods are good or bad for us, what kinds of news or opinions are permissible ad nausum.
Social chaos can happen here. What bothers me is that Obama’s inept(?) deliberately provocative (?) governance is sowing this chaos.

Last Oct. 13, in trying to explain why the market had sold off 30% in six weeks, we acknowledged that the freeze-up of the financial system was a big concern. But we cited three other factors as well:
• The imminent election of “the most anti-capitalist politician ever nominated by a major party.”
• The possibility of “a filibuster-proof Congress led by politicians who are almost as liberal.”
• A “media establishment dedicated to the implementation of a liberal agenda, and the smothering of dissent wherever it arises.”
No wonder, we said then, that panic had set in.
Today, as the market continues to sell off and we plumb 12-year lows, we wish we had a different explanation. But it still looks, as we said four months ago, “like the U.S., which built the mightiest, most prosperous economy the world has ever known, is about to turn its back on the free-enterprise system that made it all possible.”
How else would you explain all that’s happened in a few short weeks? How else would you expect the stock market, where millions cast daily votes and which is still the best indicator of what the future holds, to act when:
• A stimulus bill laden with huge amounts of spending on pork and special interests is the best our Congress can come up with to get the economy back on track. Economists broadly agree that the legislation has little stimulative power, and in fact will be a drag on economic growth for years to come.
• A $75 billion bailout for 9 million Americans who face foreclosure, regardless of how they got into financial trouble, is the government’s answer to the housing crunch. Many Americans who have scrupulously kept up with payments are steaming at the thought of subsidizing those who’ve been profligate or irresponsible.
• Lawmakers who seem more interested in pleasing special interests than voters back home now control Congress. Some of the leading voices in crafting the massive bank bailout and stimulus packages — including Sen. Chris Dodd, Rep. Barney Frank and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — were the very ones who helped get us in this mess.
• Words like “catastrophe,” “crisis” and “depression” are coming from the mouth of the newly elected president, rather than words of hope and optimism. Instead of talking up America’s capabilities and prospects, he talks them down — the exact opposite of our most successful recent president, Ronald Reagan, who came in vowing to restore that “shining city on a hill.”

Revolution my ass! Every day seems to bring more and more of this kind of talk to the surface. Oh sure, the threats from Islamists may be real, and the refugees from Mexico may come to pass, and our economy may tank, but revolution?
Not gonna happen.
And the Administration may take away the over the air voices of dissent, and web sites may become regulated for political content, and protest gatherings may need to be vetted for government approval, but revolution?
Not gonna happen.
And the government may take whatever amount of wealth, real or imaginary, from whomever they may choose, and give it to whoever earns its favor. And they may encroach on enumerated rights, recasting them as regulated privleges, but revolution?
Not gonna happen.
That’s because most of this is happening already, and the only people organized at a grass roots level to resist it are incredibly happy that it is happening.

If I had heard this stuff 2 years ago, I would have made you a foil hat to combat the secret transmissions! Today I’m not so sure that this talk is all paranoid.
If the economy collapses and we have a nation full of public eductated follow alongers combined with the entitlement folks, we could in fact have to fight for food.
While I’d like to be optomistic about life in general, I believe in preparing for the worst while hoping for the best. That said, we are learning how to grow and preserve our own food, (garden, chickens, goats), I am stocking up on paper products and non perishables, We are squeezing blood out of our pennies and saving up, I am learning how to use a gun to protect myself, my family and my land. I am also becoming more politcally active than I have ever been before.
I do have faith in God, Family and Friends and will continue to hope for the best.
When I was a kid my grandmother used to rant and rave about the communists coming to America, we would all laugh at her and let her keep ranting. She passed on years ago, but now I wonder what would she be thinking now?

What state did you settle on, if you don’t mind me asking?
I’m in Virginia, but (now)leftist northern Virginia. I’ve heard a lot of people are moving to Tennessee, one of the state-sovereignty-declared states.

The Kelo decision sent a chill down my spine. I couldn’t get it out of my mind for weeks. Then again, my grandparents lost their farm to the government many years ago for a frivolous project. They received a pittance, not enough to live on, for the property they had owned and worked all their lives.
The manner in which these bills are being passed is truly alarming. It didn’t begin with the BO admin, either. Our politicians have an agenda that is not consistent with the Constitution or the interests of the people of this country.
They are sowing the seeds of unrest, and the lib Dems are the experts. They hold us in contempt. With every passing day I see that they despise ordinary citizens who foot the bills for their folly. They are out of control, and they will force the general population to become so.
I don’t watch TV, Glenn Beck or anything. I see what’s going on around me. I don’t need those guys to tell me what’s happening. It’s all around me. If one looks and listens, it’s obvious.
Anyone who is over the age of 40 or 50 who has read a little history should be alarmed. Economic hardship combined with politicians who are obsessed with power is deadly combination.

I don’t think I am going to be able to bring myself to loot should the really bad times come. I don’t see how I’ll be able to get past that whole “other peoples property” thing. However, if the property has been abandoned or the owners are dead, I could probably take their stuff, but I just don’t have a looting personality.

AP, You should appreciate my insight into Glenn’s hysteria, He’s a Mormon and you know how Glenn over reacts and how Mormons prepare for the end of times. Enough said.
KCtheKat on February 21, 2009 at 5:03 PM
Mormons prepare for unemployment, illness, death, divorce whatever and are encouraged to put away 2 years supply of food and other essentials. Not all can do that because of finances, room etc., but I’m not preparing for end times (well maybe since the election)
Beck’s recent rants reflect his Mormon heritage. These guys are survivalists from day one. They were chased out of New York and Illinois. This tends to give one an apocalyptic worldview.
MaxMBJ on February 21, 2009 at 6:28 PM
He has no Mormon heritage since he just joined the Mormon Church a few years ago, if you’re talking about his own family heritage.
I love to hear his honesty and his sincerity, and especially when he gets emotional. He has been right. I hope he’s wrong this time, but I do think it’s time to “lock and load”.

I live in central Maryland (Frederick area). Baltimore and east is liberal and makes up 2/3 of the population. Everything west of Baltimore is majority conservative (and slipping slowly toward liberal). Worst case in a few years I’ll move again (to the hills if necessary).

not meaning to get off topic, but educating our children is part of a self sustaining lifestyle that may be needed in the future.
PS. we lived in California all our lives and moved to Alabama 3 years ago.
kringeesmom on February 21, 2009 at 7:10 PM
I watched the program live…. it really focused on “How will you survive” a worst case scenario and encouraged people to take a look at their own strategy for dealing with an uncertain future. Like carrying that toolbox and first aid kit in your car, it costs very little to have a plan and could save your life.
2nd Ammendment Mother on February 21, 2009 at 7:12 PM
Anyone who thinks Beck is “out there” with these scenarios….
Exactly how is he wrong? We’ve seen the sort of things he described play out in country after country when governments pursue ruinous policies. What would make us exempt from the same result?

Does Allah live in NY? If so, that explains his perspective. It’s no a criticism Allah, it’s just an observation.
I love Beck, I’ve stopped listening to the other talk shows precisely because they won’t deal with the hard times that are actually ahead. What separates us from other countries that have done what we are doing and suffered greatly because of it? Nothing.
Allah, we are due for judgement for the bad decisions we have made. It’s gonna be a wild ride. If your mentally unprepared then you will be caught unawares.
Does anybody here have an inkling about what’s about to happen? Just listen to Gerald Celente, the dude has been making serious trend predictions simply based on current events that will surprise you, and he is very pessimistic about what is ahead. He simply uses data to forecast, that’s it.
Our best case scenario is Jimmy Carter stagflation and we come out of it as France, with a lot less civil rights and a state that will intrude in all aspects of our lives. That is the best case scenario.
True_King on February 21, 2009 at 7:16 PM
Beck may be right on target. I just read that Obama’s budget will raise taxes on the “wealthy” and cut the defense budget. Those two issues mean fewer jobs and weaker economy and a significant weakening of our defense posture. He is destroying the country like a rabid hyena rips and destroys dying flesh. Within a couple of years we may even be as wealthy and powerful as Cuba. If you’re not afraid, start heading that direction.

Cody1991 on February 21, 2009 at 7:24 PM
Beck is going with the two guys, who’s names escape me, that have been predicting since 2006 what happened to the market and what is going on now. Soooo I don’t think that Beck is that far out there since the two have predicted something worse than the great depression.
Blind_Mule on February 21, 2009 at 7:24 PM
They are completely detached from what’s actually going on. They actually believe that we are simply going through one of our “normal” tough periods when we have never experienced anything like this. I’m grateful that Beck has the courage to speak. If you’ve followed him you would know that he has been spot on for the last 2 years, along with Peter Schiff, Gerald Celente, and others.
Rush and Levin and the rest just don’t get it. We are on the precipice.

Blind_Mule on February 21, 2009 at 7:30 PM
Glenn is an alcoholic and I trust him to tell me the truth over any other talker save Rush and they have differing styles. His message is basically that failure to prepare is preparing to fail. If your only exposure to him is recent you need to pay attention to the things he is talking about. His concern is for his family, but he is blessed with a platform from which he can share his concerns with the country and citizens he really cares deeply for.
