White House spokesman to Santelli: You don’t know what you’re talking about

posted at 3:35 pm on February 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

I’m going to put him down as a “no” on attending the Tea Party. Stick with it, as it gets snottier as he goes along.

Think Santelli will fire back on Monday? Watch the clip of him below, jacked up on this morning’s Today Show. This ain’t over.

Update: A good point from HuffPo: Why would Gibbs single out Santelli for a reply when conservative pundits have spent weeks dumping on the stimulus? Maybe it’s because of the huge play Drudge gave the story yesterday — or maybe it’s because Obama benefits from having derivatives traders seen as the face of the opposition on this issue.

Gibbs is actually worse than Deer-in-the-Headlights McClellan, the single worst Press Secretary since Ron “That Statement is Now Inoperative” Ziegler. He will be tossed under the Great Obama Victim Bus some time very soon, and we will all laugh about what a pathetic douche he was.

You, however, will be left to wonder how it was that you didn’t understand this.

let me say as someone who has done mortgages for a bank for 15 years, i did print the plan and whomever wrote it has never written a mortgage. It is so vague as to not be viable at all. And by the way, the person speaking with Mr. Santelli (sp?) is wrong, it does buy down the persons principal payment in 5 years of on time payments by $5000. I guess we all need to follow cheese to be able to see the benefit of not going late on our payments. Obama’s press secretary is the biggest pompous ass I have seen. Did anyone notice how lauer et al asked the questions in a very snarky manner??? This is going into effect on March 4th and noone knows the specifics. Did you see that small printout Mr. Gibbs had of obama’s plan? An underwriting guide for one portion of a mortgage application is longer than that, that is how little information is included in the plan. The biggest hole in the plan is the 31% cap on mortgage payment in the “plan”. I have already gotten numerous calls from people who want me to lower their payment to $200 a month because they get paid cash and do not show income on taxes. These are the same people that took advantage of the no income loans that were out there to claim the cash to get the loan. We have completely lost track of individual responsibility in this country. It is true that having a foreclosed house in your neighboorhood is bad, but instead of rewarding people who can’t pay why not reward people willing to buy that foreclosure and hold it until the market comes back? Bringing the housing market back is going to require that people start buying houses, not refinancing. lowering the rates by buying MBS is having some impact but a tax credit for a foreclosure purchase would be better. I wanted to ask Mr. Lauer et all how many houses in their neighborhoods are in foreclosure????? i would guess none. Sorry this is so long, but really makes me mad.

I’d be happy to buy him a cup of coffee—decaf,” the press secretary said, in a not-so-subtle jab at Santelli’s frantic style.”

And

“I also think that it’s tremendously important that for people who rant on cable television – to be responsible and understand what it is they’re talking about. I understand exactly what you’re saying. Many of us have folks in our neighborhoods who should never have owned homes. I would prefer they leave. They don’t maintain the homes, drag down property values because of their negligence, and in many cases (mine) we now have crime problems due to drug trafficking.

We’ve had two murders in the last year. There were none prior to the flood of new, “proud” homeowners.

Call me a racist. I could care less. I couldn’t sell my house now no matter how hard I tried. Oh… and I worked my ass off to pay off my mortgage.

Yup, a person who makes their career in the financial sector “has no idea what he’s talking about”.

Put your trust in the guy who was elected President after working 1 1/2 years in his first full time job, said that running for President qualifies him to be President, got into Harvard solely on Affirmative Action, was elected to be the Law Review editor without ever writing an article on the basis of an Affirmative Action-like rule change and who’s career as a community organizer resulted in the communities being in the same or worse shape than before he organized them (the only difference is that many more dead people vote now).

Yeah, that makes sense.

GarandFan on February 20, 2009 at 5:43 PM

Talked to a friend of mine today who is VERY senior at Deutsche Bank. He is not a political guy and never cynical. He told me that the Administration is a joke and will fail. He said they won’t find a single loan originated in 2006-2008 that is eligible. He said they are either incredibly naive and stupid about what’s really out there or they have deliberately designed a program to fail so they can come back later and demand an even more monstrous government takeover of loan servicers.

The three largest mortgage servicers’ stocks fell to 25-year lows today. These three banks service half of all mortgages. Investors have clearly examined the plan and found it wanting.

[HarneyPeak on February 20, 2009 at 4:52 PM]

Well, like most of these terms, they can be quite vague. Like you, I have a problem with the term flipper when it is too encompassing. There’s a guy down the street who made a job of “flipping” if you will. He buys a rundown house or one severely out of date, buys it, and fixes it all up and then resells it. He does a great job and he adds major value to the house. He chose the one on our street because it was owned by an older couple that had lived there 50 years so it was mostly out of date, but because of the mortgage crisis/tanking real estate values, he can’t sell it now, so he’s just living there, though he isn’t into the mortgage problems.

I’ve got to say though the flippers aren’t so much a problem as those bought a house they couldn’t afford and those who refinanced to sub-prime with the intention of taking out value for whatever reason and now they are in trouble because they can’t pay. Those are the ones who should not be bailed out.

The market is the Great Professor and those who want a ‘bailout’ on the grade they got, because they ‘put in a lot of effort’ but didn’t learn anything, ought not be spared the lesson they won’t forget.

Dusty on February 20, 2009 at 5:49 PM

they have deliberately designed a program to fail so they can come back later and demand an even more monstrous government takeover of loan servicers.

Maybe it’s because of the huge play Drudge gave the story yesterday — or maybe it’s because Obama benefits from having derivatives traders seen as the face of the opposition on this issue.

I think it’s because they can always minimize the republicans and say things like “they’re in the minority”, but Santelli had real live people behind him cheering him on and that is something the administration does like or want.

Topsecretk9 on February 20, 2009 at 6:03 PM

This is a complex problem to begin with. It could be that the administration is wrong with this kind of mortgage relief efforts. It could, potentially, ALSO be that this relief hurts the lenders and the banks (if the primary residence loan terms get re-negotiated), so they are speaking out of a conflict of interest.

There is definitely a HUGE conflict of interest here. A large number of guys who took the loan conveniently forgot how they could not afford to pay for it once the subprime rates set in. HOWEVER, there is an equally large number of mortgage lenders who were unbelievably eager to have people sign the papers, without going through their credit history or explaining the terms properly to them. One cannot have a discussion on the former type, without talking about the latter.

Say you ask for a million dollar limit credit card. You would expect your credit history to be checked fairly rigorously, correct? It’s insane to blame only you for getting that card if the bank never checked your background, and you declared bankruptcy.

Thanks for allowing me to rant. Incidentally, while I am on this, I have heard negative comments from people when I claim I am on neither of the political extremes. I am an engineer by profession: in my line of work, if I only dealt with ideals (like some in the academia do), I would NEVER get ANY product out the door.

Have a great evening!

Surely there were some in that Press Room who had the thought cross their mind. I doubt that they have the guts to express it yet (notice the uncomfortable laughter at Rick’s expense), but I bet it will simmer in the backs of their minds. That “uncomfortable laughter” you heard was the reporters realizing that if a revolution really does take place, their necks are on the line due to their absolute slobberfest over Obama; they have no excuses. The wrath of the common man scares the sh*t out of elite liberals. And for good reason.

Intentional goading. These folks would love civil unrest so they could call martial law and do even more. Evil.

PrincipledPilgrim on February 20, 2009 at 6:26 PM

Well, obviously, GIBBS doesn’t know what he is talking about (or is lying), because I just went to the gov dot com page and found this, about reducing the principle of the loans:

* I owe more than my house is worth. Will the Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan reduce what I owe?

The primary objective of the Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan is to help borrowers avoid foreclosure by modifying troubled loans to achieve a payment the borrower can afford. Lenders are likely to lower payments mainly by reducing loan interest rates. However, the program offers incentives for principal reductions and at your lender’s discretion modifications may include upfront reductions of loan principal.

* I heard the government was providing a financial incentive to borrowers. Is that true?

Yes. To encourage borrowers who work hard to retain homeownership, the Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan provides incentive payments as a borrower makes timely payments on the modified loan. The incentive will accrue on a monthly basis and will be applied directly to reduce your mortgage debt. Borrowers who pay on time for five years can have up to $5,000 applied to reduce their debt by the end of that period.

I guess this White House thinks none of us can even read.

Alana on February 20, 2009 at 6:27 PM

Santelli is a REPORTER. All he did was REPORT what he was hearing on the trading floor in Chicago. These are not fatcat Wall Street hedge fund managers – they are TRADERS who are not millionaires and who live in modest suburban neighborhoods just like Robert Gibbs does.

What a troll.

rockmom on February 20, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Why would Gibbs single out Santelli for a reply…

Because they don’t want anymore Santelli’s!
Make him a target,, make him an example,, mention something about “where he lives”,,,, in other words,, intimidate, intimidate, intimidate! Conservative bloggers are one thing. A revolution of Santelli’s and Joe the Plumbers are another!

Unbe-freakin’-lievable! Talk about your arrogant, screw you public servant! I got two words for Gibbs – **** YOU!

This isn’t over. This is just beginning. This economy is on its way to total collapse due to its government. This arrogant power-hungry socialist government will continue to try to extent its power and it will cross the line.

King of the Britons on February 20, 2009 at 6:33 PM

Correction: Liesman video, sorry. I thought it was Gibbs who said that.

From the Liesman video (what a name!):

“First of all, they’re not lowering the principle amount of the loan, that’s just wrong.”

Why would God want to help us as a country? The government of this country hates God. Hell, our government fights for the rights to kill babies – not only in the womb, but the ones who fight their way out of the womb. Why would God bless a country like that?

Let’s just say that the White House is banking on that phenomenal public education we got. Somehow a few of us learned to think despite it.

Just clicked on the HuffPo link above and read a few of the comments over there. They love Gibbs, someone called him the People’s Press Secretary (how ironic since they are describing a socialist/Marxist mouthpiece). This isn’t a red/blue country. It is a night/day country. Unbelievable. I didn’t think I lived in the People’s Republic of the USA, but maybe I am wrong…

Who knew that Baghdad Bob’s real name was Robert Gibbs?

btenney on February 20, 2009 at 7:27 PM

I have been watching Rick Santelli for several years and he has been a Ron Paul supporter for awhile. He loved to stick it to the Bush administration ever since this whole thing got started back in Aug. 2007. I would caution making him in to some kind of hero for GOP/Republicans, you might not like the rest of his world view. Anyway, at this point I have little respect for anyone who works for Wall St.

SocratesShadow on February 20, 2009 at 7:32 PM

I’m not entirely sure where Mr. Santelli lives or in what house he lives,” Gibbs said during the daily briefing.

I was outraged when I heard this.

faraway on February 20, 2009 at 4:19 PM

Exactly! What was the point of that remark? Intimidation? What is the implication? That Santelli lives in a nice home and he doesn’t want others to do so? Is this supposed to make Santelli a perpetrator of the “two Americas” that Obama wants to eliminate by having everyone own what Santelli does?

The Alinksy personalize/demonize effort of Obama and his helpmates in the media is rather obvious.

And what’s with the malarkey about Obama having wanted the American people to sacrifice? How about asking the people who lived beyond their means to sacrifice the homes that they are not paying for?

Gibbs just told Fox News that homeowners who did not make bad decisions concerning their mortgages can also take advantage of the loan modification program to reduce their payments and/or principal balance. The program will, in that way, help everyone.

This is how the Administration has decided to handle the storm now surrounding the “alms for the stupid” kerfuffle brought to light by Santinelli.

People are interested in Gibbs because he’s the messenger boy between reporters and the people who allegedly know things.

“This plan helps people who have been playing by the rules”

Why the heck would they need a plan?

I’m renting to save up enough to get my first house? Does this plan help me? No.

But if I’d gotten a nothing down loan on a house I couldn’t afford… if I were that stupid; then this plan would do wonders for me.

Odd, this plan would only help someone in my situation if they did something stupid and irresponsible… and it punishes people exactly like me who were responsible.

Brilliant plan, do I get dinner first?

I’m going to be “Crushed like an insect” too; at least financially; because I was fiscally responsible. Was that what you meant getalife? That fiscally responsible people, people who don’t make stupid spending/loan choices will be crushed like an insect?

If that was your point, then I agree. Otherwise I have to wonder why you’re robbing me to help people who were less responsible than me. Are you trying to teach me to be less responsible? Trying to teach others that their choices have no consequences? I’m just not sure I see the point.

gekkobear on February 20, 2009 at 7:52 PM

I wonder if any of the mocking media clowns could define exactly what is in that Obama plan. Maybe they should download it and print it. Maybe Gibbs should, too.

The nonsense of portraying those who object to this blatant theft from the productive and expecting them to pay the bill in order to reward those who made poor decisions or who are (probably temporarily) on the downward slide in the Wheel of Life’s Fortune as uncaring about their neighbors. I don’t have neighbors in Ft. Myers or Phoenix, and I don’t feel obliged to encourage their economic folly.

Are the media trying to perpetuate another class of victims, the kind that Coulter skewers?

Statistically, it is emerging that too many who have refinanced their mortgages renege on their payments within months.

He’s either an idiot or a liar if he thinks there are 9 million such responsible homeowners who will be helped by this program.

I’ve been in the mortgage business since 1995. At the peak of the housing boom almost nobody in southern California or Las Vegas or southwest Florida could buy a home with a regular 30-year 20 percent down fixed-rate mortgage. They all took a leap of faith – or worse; many of them committed outright fraud and knew it. There’s an old saying that anything that looks too good to be true probably is. Anyone who really thought they could buy a $500;000 house for $2000 a month was either a crook or a moron. There was a lot of willful blindness by lenders but there was just as much by the buyers. None of them deserve a dime of my tax money to fix their mortgage. They need to let the house go and be renters again for a while. It isn’t the end of the world. Once that house is foreclosed and the price cut in half someone who REALLY is deserving can afford to buy it without any government help.

I do not respond to childish name calling but do enjoy entertainment:

“In an interview with Fox News, Gov. Sarah Palin’s daughter, 18-year-old Bristol Palin…said, ‘A year ago, I never would have thought I would become a mom or that my mom was going to be chosen to be a vice presidential candidate.’ Oddly enough, both things happened because some guy failed to take the proper precautions.”
