Obama’s Pentagon review: Gitmo meets the standards of the Geneva Conventions

posted at 4:35 pm on February 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

When does the military’s compliance with international law qualify as bad news? When you’re a new president desperate for excuses to follow through on a dopey campaign promise that’ll please your nutroots base and no one else.

Oh well. Back to the “it just looks bad” argument.

A Pentagon review of conditions in the Guantanamo Bay military prison has concluded that the treatment of detainees meets the requirements of the Geneva Convention but that prisoners in the highest-security camps should be allowed more religious and social interaction with each other, according to a government official who has read the 85-page document.

The report, which was ordered by President Obama, was prepared by Adm. Patrick M. Walsh, the vice chief of naval operations, and has been delivered to the White House. Obama requested the review as part of an executive order on the planned closure of the prison at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. naval base on the southeastern tip of Cuba…

Walsh concluded that … force-feeding, which involves strapping prisoners to feeding chairs and forcing tubes down one nostril and into their stomachs, is in compliance the Geneva Convention’s mandate that the lives of prisoners must be preserved, the government official said.

Actually, insofar as this gives The One a handy alternative to expanding our renditions program, it does mean good news for him — or rather, it would if the left still cared about renditions, which they haven’t since January 20th. Exit question: With opposition to closing Gitmo already near majority levels, the media had better keep this as quiet as possible, huh?

A naive, immature, inexperienced but nevertheless responsible POTUS would have waited for this report before announcing as his first order of business that GITMO is being closed within the year (even though he has no idea what to do with the prisoners).

Unfortunately America no longer has a responsible POTUS.

obambi is nothing but a puppet. pure and simple. this is the most pitiful excuse for a president and an administration that i have ever seen. this country is becoming the laughing stock of the entire world. all of these intellectuals couldn’t find their asses with both hands.

Disgraceful

sandlin71 on February 20, 2009 at 8:28 PM

All the true believers I know have been utterly silent for the past month.

Yep. A formerly sane friend of mine specifically voted for Obama because he was going to close Gitmo and put an end to “torture” (which is what dampening Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s mustache is, apparently). He doesn’t reply to my e-mails anymore.

What are the stipulations of the Geneva Convention regarding terrorists and non-uniformed combatants?

I believe they are treated as Spies. Usual penalty is .30 caliber ventilation.

GunRunner on February 20, 2009 at 8:45 PM

The left wants to employ mortgage application rules to everything and everyone. No qualification required! You cannot be turned down!

Only the dimmest of bulbs would argue that terrorists deserve or even qualify for the same protections afforded uniformed soldiers via the Conventions. I think it all boils down to the inability of some to discriminate between various forms of violence and the actors.

moxie_neanderthal on February 20, 2009 at 8:58 PM

It may not help Michelle’s children, but it sure helps mine. There are some people who are just not fit to walk about in free society. It always amazes me that the left are against the death penalty for child rapist/murderers, but they have no problem with snuffing the life of an innocent child. Well, I am not a big fan of guns, but my husband owns several. I am beginning to like the feeling of security knowing that those guns are in the house. Now, I must have him teach me how to load one….

Gee, we tell people something for years, on review, it turns out we’re right, I wonder how long before the MSM gives us credit for it.

Yes, that was a joke.

…prisoners in the highest-security camps should be allowed more religious and social interaction with each other

Of course. What were we thinking, discouraging dangerous terrorists from comingling and socializing? Hell, we should throw them a f*&^ng party. Silly me.

So Obama and everyone who supported him were wrong?

When do they admit it?

The Messiah walks on Water.
His mere presence creates compliance with the Geneva Convention, he anoits my head with Oil, Yea, though I walk thru the Valley of Castro, I shall fear no ’54 Chevy, for thou art in compliance, thy rod and thy staff are missing, and I shall dwell in the House of GITMO, forever.

Obama loves Gitmo.

Worthy of an Update:

President Barack Obama’s Justice Department sided with the former Bush administration on Friday, saying detainees in Afghanistan have no constitutional rights.

Seems someone over there at Justice has actually read Johnson v. Eisentrager [1950] writ of certiorari.

Been trying to get the word out on this for the past several months.

It’s too bad you can’t ask the media about the 180. These people are constantly shown to be wrong but they just pass on to the next “crisis” like they never said or promoted inaccuracies. The one positive sign is that they are now both fiscally and morally bankrupt.

Cindy Munford on February 21, 2009 at 1:01 AM

Sweet creeping jeebzus! I thought the buzz on the Obamacans was that they were the smart guys (and competent to boot, compared to the evil Booosh…)
The only thing standing between The One and complete a chaotic breakdown is the firewall the MSM has thrown up around this crew.
Lawdy mama, what will the Prols do when the press can’t protect these guys anymore?
Deep shit and bad juju’s a comin’…

Prisoners in the highest-security camps should be allowed more religious and social interaction with each other…

This is one of the most stupid ideas I ever heard of – even more stupid then letting these Islamic militant combatants have their own personal copy of the Koran. The supremacist & uncompromisingly intolerant ideology of the Islam, as codified in the Koran, is their major inspiration as violent jihadist and strengthens their resilience to interrogation. Now some moron thinks they should also have “religious and social interaction”! Are officials still taking make-me-stupid&oblivious pills left over from the Bush administration? Maybe this moron thinks they should also get to watch Al Jazeera TV and have a little training camp to keep them in shape.

I am still trying to figure out who in the hell decided that non US citizens, NOT living in the US, but committing crimes against the US soldiers as well as citizens of whatever hell hole they do live in, should have US Constitutional rights! I always thought the the Constitution was for the US, NOT the entire world!

Yeah, Treacher, it’s all I can do not to say I TOLD YOU SO. But I kinda feel sorry for them too. Now they have to grow up fast.

Or maybe they’re all at home lighting candles to John Conyers and the Truth Commission.

Let’s see…water dropped on the nose=TORTURE, tube shoved up the nose=NOT TORTURE. Did I get that right, am I missing anything?

CH on February 21, 2009 at 12:32 PM

So, does this mean that the bumbling egghead’s executive order to shut Gitmo down will be rescinded? Or completely forgotten?

RepubChica on February 21, 2009 at 1:36 PM

I’m betting against any leftist activist or blogger apologizing for falsely accusing President Bush or Vice President Cheney, or posting an acknowledgment that they erred.

Any takers? I need some extra income…

Well, you have Ruth Bader Ginsberg, John Paul Stephens, Stephen Breyer, and David Souter on the Supreme Court, who routinely decide that the Constitution says whatever the Daily Kos wants it to say this month. Against their reflexive perfidy, you have Anton Scalia, John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito who actually read the Constitution and try to interpret what it says.

So, the decision actually falls to the 9th justice on the Supreme Court, Anthony Kennedy. He seems to decide using chicken parts. You can blame him for that little momentary insanity that we all now have to live with (and some of will probably die with.)

Oh, you can ask, all right – but where you would have, before January 20th, heard “Obama is the hope and change we need”, and shortly after January 20th, “Just give him a chance”, now all you get is…the sound of crickets, chirping in the distance. Nothing else.

He knew it all along. He just used campaign rhetoric and ostrich-like memes to show he resided in the leftists’ echo chamber to rally popular support, electoplate his “CHANGE”, and imitate the Pied Piper to the polls.

Of COURSE Gitmo is legit, liberals! Otherwise you would have had something in the vein of Nueremburg to hang Bush/Cheney with years ago. You allowed yourselves to be snakecharmed into believing scraps your liberal masters threw down from their elitist table to your mongrel mouths.

It would be funny if they didn’t convince the world we were doing unspeakable acts down there. Convincing everyone outsid our borders TEH EEV!L RETHUGLICANS were demanding torture and beatings.

Oh what the hell, I’ll laugh anyway.

I’m thinking Chicago as part of the stimulus plan. Didn’t Blago mention something like this on one of those tapes in between expletives in return for a few campaign contributions? After all they are just poor misguided souls who have been hounded by the Evil Bush since 9/12/01. Nothing some nice clothes, a shave, a bath and an approved Freddie Mac home loan wouldn’t fix! Deep dish anyone?
