Helen Thomas: We’re all terrorists

All right, Hot Air denizens. If this thread doesn’t have 500 comments by midnight, I’m going to post another Good at Cooking with Andy segment this weekend. My friend from the Left, Tommy Christopher, got a chance to talk with Helen Thomas at the White House today after she referred to our enemies in Afghanistan and Pakistan as “so-called terrorists”. Helen likes Tommy, so she had no reservations about going with the Full Moral Equivalence argument:
TOMMY: All right Helen, when you asked the President about Afghanistan and Pakistan during the press conference, you said, “so-called terrorists”. You want to explain why you say “so-called terrorists”?
THOMAS: Because some people think they’re freedom fighters. They are in their own country, and we could dub them as terrorists, but … and their tactics are terrible, but so are ours. We dropped bombs on people in Iraq, people who did nothing to us.
TOMMY: So would you say that it’s for the sake of intellectual honesty?
THOMAS: [NODDING] I say we need it.
Caleb Howe, a conservative at Red State who partners with Tommy on projects and events, chalks this up to Thomas’ liberalism, but I think that lets her off the hook. Plenty of liberals don’t buy into the nutty moral equivalency of terrorists who target civilians for political purposes and the people who fight the terrorists hiding among the civilians. Mostly that comes from the lunatic Left, the International ANSWER and World Can’t Wait quasi-Stalinists and terrorist apologists. I’d include Michael Moore, who argued that al-Qaeda in Iraq were the modern-day equivalents to the Minutemen of the American Revolution, who also made their argument by blowing up carriages with huge bombs buried in the streets and beheaded civilian engineers that they kidnapped from the British … at least according to Moore.
Beyond that, Thomas doesn’t even pay attention to the issues. The Taliban in Pakistan cross the border into Afghanistan to fight the government and NATO; they are primarily Pakistanis, not Afghans. Osama bin Laden is neither — he’s a Saudi of Yemeni descent who runs a network of mostly foreign fighters comprising Uighers, Uzbeks, Chechens, and Arabs out of the FATA, and who by the way attacked the US on 9/11 and not any of the aforementioned countries. “Their own country” is as ignorant as it gets.
So what do Hot Air readers find more objectionable — the actual statement from Thomas, or the condescending manner in which she explained it to Tommy? I’d say six of one, half-dozen of the other.
Update: Look, I know you are all having a lot of fun picking on Thomas’ looks, but believe me, if someone told me I’d be doing this at 88 with my own seat at the White House briefing room, I wouldn’t really care what I looked like as long as I was still breathing.

Oh and to anyone having sympathy for the terrorists, strapping a bomb to yourself and blowing up a bunch of soldiers does not make you a freedom fighter, it makes you a f’n terrorist! period. Sawing off the head of a captured soldier does not make you a freedom fighter, it makes you terrorist scum.

I do call people who lob the heads off of chained captives to make video porn terrorists. Years ago, back in the 80s I went to DC in support of family farmers for WIFE {Women Involved in Farm Economics}…I met Helen Thomas at some Congressional breakfast. It is amazing how little she has changed. She was never pretty, but making fun of old ladies because they are old is just tacky.

Chopping off heads on video is psychological warfare….and it works because we are a squeamish and weak people.
We’re getting closer to the truth of ‘terrorism’ when we observe those that commit acts of violence to manipulate the public in political spheres.
I don’t regard any act against our military as an act of terrorism….it’s warfare….they do it ugly…..we’d better stop being such a bunch of whiny-ass cissys about it and man-up about what needs to be done to combat it.
But by all means, wave your cheap plastic flags and chant “USA” if it makes you feel better – you’re worse than useless.
The actual solution to our problems requires far more violence on our part…..but we’re so enamoured with this narcissistic pantomime of the ‘Geneva Convention’ that I doubt we’ll wake up to reality before there’s a big smoking hole where DC/NY used to be.

I make fun of her not because she is old, but because I have zero respect for the things she stands for and will not give credence to her opinions by addressing them. No. Chopping off heads is murder. Filming it to manipulate people for political ends is terrorism. Do not call it warfare. That degrades real soldiers who act honorably in actual war. Iraqi soldiers — those in uniform who fought our troops were engaged in war & I respect them as enemy soldiers. Those who hide in civilian garb & attack civilians are cowards and terrorists.
BTW, I have never watched American Idol. I much prefer History/Science/Discovery channels. But go back to watching Nick at Night.

Going back to the old days at Captain’s Quarters, and continuing quite recently here at HotAir, a number of us who had been or are currently in the military or served/are serving in various posts in intelligence and security fields, have been remarking among ourselves that most Americans have no concept of war and warfare.
Other than 9-11, most Americans never then, nor now, realize we are in a war, a major war, one that will make WWII look tame if it ever gets out of control.
And most of America? More concerned about American Idol or what some reality show husband is going through because he is an ass, or getting down with the latest rap, hip hop or other insanity, than they are concerned about the very real danger to their lives, liberty and livelihoods because of those who brought war to us not just on 9-11, but decades before.
And the politicians? The journalists? Our “leaders?” Running a “war” based on popularity polls…mostly. Refusing to admit we are at war, really.

I spent a week in DC this past week, and spent time with a number of former colleagues who are still very much in the fight…and the official restraints placed on them because of timidity on the part of the Administration, current and prior, as well as the overreaching arm of the Fourth Estate in making both tactical and strategic decisions for all of us.
The bad guys know it…and they won’t leave us alone. Matter of fact, they are gaining because we refuse to fight a war as a war should be fought. Get to it. Make it violent. Get it over with. Prepare for the next one.
But what we have been doing, warfare by popularity polls and most of the population not paying attention at all?
One hell of a way to run a war. No, one hell of a way to lose a war.

Associating Thomas with anything of the Renaissance is certainly not what Thomas embodies. The Renaissance was the single most significant period of overall advancement of learning and development in the history of Western man.

Well attacking people isn’t going to help you get your point across. And I’ll be outraged at terrorism & terrorists because they operate outside the normal rules, including the laws of war.
If you don’t know any answers perhaps you shouldn’t advocate killing lots of people. Kill whom? And why?
Part of W’s problem was that he wasn’t a good speaker, able to get his point across as Reagan & Clinton were. Smashing the enemy is only part of the problem, we also have to speak to the fence sitters. It’s not an either/or position, but rather a whole spectrum of options that need to be used. Part of it is to demonize the terrorists as the scum they are, not as martyrs.
Anyway Battlestar Galactica will be on soon enough. Done my part to hit 500.

LimeyGeek is (probably) drunk. I was in London from 1982-2005 and apart from a few bombs in the City and one particularly bad bombing in a country town there was nothing to it. It wasn’t existential, like this war, and there weren’t any 5th-columnists like that hag Thomas being feted as though every stupid thing that falls out of her mouth is deeply meaningful.
