Deadbeatonomics: Obama stiffs Chicago for $1.74M

posted at 9:34 am on February 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

When Barack Obama won the presidential election, the DNC and the Obama campaign staged a massive party in Chicago’s Grant Park.  They wanted to emphasize that Hope and Change had finally come to America.  Instead, it looks as though they showed how they planned to deal with the mortgage crisis — by letting the bill go unpaid after the big party (via Michelle):

Chicago has yet to recoup the $1.74 million cost of President Obama’s victory celebration in Grant Park — despite a burgeoning $50.5 million budget shortfall that threatens more layoffs and union concessions.

“The Democratic National Committee has not yet paid us,” Peter Scales, a spokesman for the city’s Office of Budget and Management, said Thursday after questions from the Chicago Sun-Times. “We’re reaching out to them this week.”

Stacie Paxton, a spokeswoman for the Obama-controlled DNC, explained the reimbursement delay by saying, “We are still looking at various costs and bills.” She would not say whether parts of the bill are disputed.

This wasn’t the Hope and Change Mayor Daley promised:

In late October, Mayor Daley assured that the cash-flush Obama campaign would reimburse the city for every penny spent on the rally. “We have a financial crisis,” he said at the time. “The City of Chicago could not afford $2 million on this because we’re gonna be laying off people, cutting back. That [cost] would really be unfortunate. . . . It’s a huge cost to the City of Chicago.

“This is not a presidential visit. . . . This is a political event, and they’ve agreed to pay for all those services — all the expenses of that. … It’s costly, but they raised quite a bit of money. There’s no [shortage] of money in that campaign.”

Maybe it was the Sub-Prime Campaign?

It sounds a lot like Obama’s economic policies.  Spend the money now, and simply default when the bills come due.  How is this any different from Porkulus, or from Obama’s plan to have the government force banks to write off parts of mortgages by having judges set interest rates?  All of this gives the same message: spend it now, promise to pay it back, and then walk away.  It’s Deadbeatonomics, which is the simplest way to describe Obama’s entire economic approach.

In fact, I have the perfect theme song for the Obama administration:

I was good, I could talk
A mile a minute,
On this caffeine buzz I was on
We were really hummin’
We would talk every day for hours
We belong to the deadbeat club

Pretty typical, really.

This small campus town out here in the Midwest wherein I reside has still not been paid for expenses incurred by the Kerry/Edwards Campaign back in 2004…and it is no small chunk of change that is owed…and promised.

The Bush/Cheney Campaign paid their bills when they made a few stops in this county back in 2008, but to expect the Dems to actually “pay” for something, with cash? Unless, of course, it is a bribe, or whatever you call it? Dash? Bakcheesh?

I would hope that Chicago gets at least a small chunk of change from Obama. If so, in any amount, it’ll be a lot more than we are owed and waiting for from that poor, impoverished John Kerry or John Edwards.

The city was tricked by the big banks and Wall Street into financing a victory party they couldn’t afford. I propose raising my taxes to help pay for the party. I believe this will help create jobs and provide stability to the citizens of Chicago who deserve a helping hand.

izoneguy on February 20, 2009 at 9:59 AM

Here’s the result of Obama-type irresponsibility: anarchy.

http://michellemalkin.com/2009/02/20/this-is-our-house-now-acorn-mob-begins-breaking-into-homes/

The stats I see are that 92% of homeowners are current on mortgage payments. Of the remaining 8%, you have the true hard-luck stories (rare instances, but can’t families, extended families, local charities, local communities intercede?); speculators (let them burn, I say); and people who shouldn’t extended home loans (ACORN clients).

Frankly, I don’t see the numbers that enable ACORN to get away with this. Holder, Clyburn, Obama, and ACORN have played the race card too many times for me. It’s falling on deaf ears, and I say move in with family, friends, or a homeless shelter. I hope there is extraordinary backlash against this ACORN anarchy. Enough is enough.

Where I live, we had a widely reported situation of a middle-aged woman with a $45,000-a-year county-government (of course) job who’d managed to acquire three local homes with an aggregate fair market value of $4 million. Say what? Sure, crucify the lender, but I also have no sympathy for this woman–evict her.

BuckeyeSam on February 20, 2009 at 9:59 AM

I wish they’d spend as much time reading and looking over the porkulous (stimu-lies) bill. Funny how much scrutiny there is when they spend their own democRATS money. Check out the Dow….timberrrrr.

Caper29 on February 20, 2009 at 10:03 AM

Mayor Daley is not worried about the money.

There is a well-known tale in Austin about President LBJ ordering a local heavy equipment dealer to deliver a $100K front-end loader/tractor to his Hill Country ranch. The dealer never sent a bill to LBJ, but instead was awarded an equipment contract on a large highway project that was grossed up by $100K. Perks of the office.

I agree with the sentiment, but just to pick a nit, 100,000 million is 100 billion, more than 10 times the population of the planet. I’m sure you meant 100 million.

In any event, I think people would be wise to mod their deductions so as to not over-pay their taxes. Who would want an IOU (a la California) from this government?
