Burris kicked to the curb by black pastors

Roland Burris’ serial prevarications on his relationship with disgraced former governor Rod Blagojevich have put tremendous pressure on Democrats to do something, or risk carrying the stench of scandal for the next two years. While Senate Democratic leaders Harry Reid and Dick Durbin have issued increasingly terse and distant statements and have pushed the issue to the Senate Ethics Commitee for review, neither have had the nerve to demand Burris’ resignation for his lies under oath about contacts with — and fundraising for — Blagojevich. We have speculated Reid and Durbin want to avoid a showdown with the Congressional Black Caucus over removing the only African-American in the upper chamber, and they won’t move without some political cover.
A group of black ministers in Chicago just provided them with a Snuggie:
A group of black ministers who supported U.S. Sen. Roland Burris as he fought to get his job now plan to ask for his resignation following revelations that he tried to raise money for the disgraced governor who appointed him, one of the ministers told The Associated Press on Thursday.
Many of the city’s influential black pastors supported Burris because of his scandal-free reputation—even though he was appointed by then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich three weeks after the governor was arrested for allegedly trying to sell the Senate seat.
Now some of those pastors will ask Burris to resign, according to the minister, who spoke on condition of anonymity because a meeting with Burris had not yet been scheduled.
Now Reid and Durbin have allies with Unchallenged Moral Authority, really on two bases. Any demand for a resignation now by Reid and/or Durbin can’t be cast as a racist ploy. Second, even apart from that issue, the same friends that wanted Burris to get the nomination now want him to leave. That makes a rather powerful argument for Burris’ ejection.
Speaking of that “scandal-free reputation,” Burris has more bad news, courtesy of CQ Politics:
The names of lobbying clients that Sen. Roland W. Burris declared to a state legislative panel do not match those on records he filed over the last decade with Illinois and Chicago agencies, a CQ analysis of the records has found. …
In a Feb. 5 submission to the committee, Burris listed 26 clients dating to 2003.
But the filing contains discrepancies with documents filed with the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office and with the Chicago Board of Ethics. A number of clients are listed only in either the legislative filing or in the agency records.
For example, records with the secretary of state show Burris representing the Council of Independent Tobacco Manufacturers of America from 2003 to 2005 and the Illinois Association of Mortgage Brokers in 2007. But those clients don’t appear in his filing with the Impeachment Committee.
I guess after lying about his relationship with Blagojevich on several occasions, including in sworn testimony to the state legislature, a lobbying scandal seems a bit tame. However, hiding his relationship with the Association of Mortgage Brokers during a financial meltdown created by bad mortgages doesn’t exactly count as an inside-the-Beltway problem. What other relationships will turn up in Burris’ past? Jack Abramoff? Bernie Madoff? John Wayne Gacy?
Rick Moran seems skeptical that Burris will resign, and he may be right. But it was Dick Durbin, his partner from Illinois, who insisted that the Ethics Commitee add the lobbying issue to their investigation of his Blagojevich connections and his changing testimony. I’d say that Reid and Durbin want as much cover to push him out as possible, and that they may have already found enough from a surprising source. If Reid and Durbin publicly demand his resignation, Burris will have little choice and no friends to back him up.

Burris has outstayed his usefullness now. He was there for the stimulus vote, he can now be tossed under the bus

its not gonna happen, he is from the Blago mold and they will have to drag him out. hell this guy almost fought his way into the Senate.
rob verdi on February 20, 2009 at 10:18 AM
This is all part of a plan to get Jesse Jackson Jr. into the Senate and not have him be tainted by the Blago scandal. Poor Burris doesn’t have a clue what’s hit him.

This is a public broadcast announcement for IL….Do we have any democrats who we could seat in the senate who are not scandal ridden? Anyone…Anyone…Bueller… Bueller
MDWNJ on February 20, 2009 at 10:22 AM
I would suggest that Burris is merely an embellishment on the scandal machine that is the Obama administration and Democrat party. After all, Harry Truman served in the House and Senate for years as the Kansas City Mafia’s guy.
When you have a tax cheat in charge of the economy, a Presidential Chief of Staff involved not only with the negotiations for selling this seat but also with tax problems, several high-profile nominees that have skulked away because of ethics problems…. Burris is second tier scandal stuff at best.
highhopes on February 20, 2009 at 10:23 AM
Burris is being railroaded; the guy is from Chicago which is not exactly a hub of dirty politics like Bismarck, North Dakota.
Bishop on February 20, 2009 at 10:23 AM
There is the GOP, though. The GOP should oppose any move to have Burris resign or be censured by the Senate.
This sounds a bit bizzare, I know, but stay with me.
I think the GOP should openly state that Burris and any embarrassment attached thereto is directly attributable to the Democrats. They allowed in him, they get to parade him around (or hide him) until the next election.
Turn him into a sh*t stain in your skivvies: embarassing and hard to get rid of.
BobMbx on February 20, 2009 at 10:23 AM
He won’t resign…he’s a looney and really has no where else to go at this point. And his own party hasn’t been able to influence much of anything regarding his status to this point anyway.
And that’s just fine with me.
Asher on February 20, 2009 at 10:25 AM
Man, don’t you just have to RESPECT those democrats and their high sense of honor and ethical behavior?
Yah, you do.

But the reason why Harry Reid didn’t want either Burris or Shakedown Jr. was that they are unelectable statewide when the filthy liar’s seat comes up for a vote. Shakedown may get the seat for a couple of years, but he would be hard pressed holding onto it when somebody other than the filthy Illinois Democrat party is making the choice.

Why no names in the Breitbart article??? Hmmm…
This would be a shrewd move, but will they do it? The Chicago Dems allowed Burris in to avoid an election and possibly losing OBAMA’s Senate seat to a Republican. They also let him in to get the Stimulus Bill passed. Anytime Durbin is on board, something is rotten.
conservative pilgrim on February 20, 2009 at 10:32 AM
No, Bishop, you need to get the Liberal to English Dictionary. Go ask Thad McCotter. He is well versed in the subject.

This may not be neccessary. Our Gov (IL) Pat Quinn is supposed to annouce today his special election plan if Burris resigns. If the special election occurs, the IL GOP can field their best candidates since they do not have to worry about giving up their current seat.

But, didn’t the GOP blast Reid for not seating him? I think the smart move for the GOP would be to stay as far away from this as possible. The American people who pay attention get it.

I have the sense that Burris will make Harry Reid impeach him if he wants him gone. He has nothing to lose by staying. He is working on a nice federal pension while getting a good salary and expenses.
Isn’t it about time for Burris to rub their noses in it by taking a highly publicized junket to some tropical isle? Or maybe it is wiser to stay in DC so as to maintain his being “privileged from Arrest” while the Senate is in session.
Laurence on February 20, 2009 at 10:45 AM
How much cash will Burris soak the Dem party for, in order for him to step down.
This is the Chicago way.
PappaMac on February 20, 2009 at 10:45 AM
I say he was seated under false pretenses. Therefore any votes he cast while as “Senator” are null & void – Thus the Stimulus bill must be rendered null & void and must be voted for again without Burris.
izoneguy on February 20, 2009 at 10:49 AM
I agree that he’s seriously deranged and they’ll have to drag his stupid midget butt out of the chair, but that’s ok; we can do that.
But I like the current silence of the ILGOP. Durkin came out first and called for his resignation, and I’m certain that’s what has Dick the Weenie Durbin working the levers backstage. He’s such a maggot.
But Durkin is suddenly quiet. He’s letting all the news have a D in front of it, I think.
Jaibones on February 20, 2009 at 10:50 AM
Did he vote on the stimulus
tomas on February 20, 2009 at 10:51 AM
Does Burris have a legal defense fund one could contribute to as a way to ensure a full and thorough investigation of Blago’s dealings with various democrats?
jeff_from_mpls on February 20, 2009 at 10:53 AM
The more we find out about Burris and his reprehensible relationships…the more we find out about how he has lied…the more we find out how he is just another crooked, low life politician…the more I realize he is the perfect liberal, the poster child for this liberal democrat congress.
As him being a democrat, I see nothing wrong with his behavior.
In fact, to prove the point, not one liberal poster on HotAir (and there are several) have found anything wrong with what he has done.
This is what the liberals feel is a standard…
right2bright on February 20, 2009 at 10:54 AM
I think it’s wrong of Reid to demand a resignation of any Senator. This is a representative Democracy. Clearly I’m not going to support Burris, but his keeping his job should be in the hands of people of Illinois.
Black (or any color or colorless) pastors are well within their rights to push for better representation of their interests in the Federal legislature. Reid should assume that this is who Illinois wants him to work with and treat him accordingly.
radiofreevillage on February 20, 2009 at 10:54 AM
So now that the Blacks have pulled a 1,2 Teddy on Roland, effectively trumping his playing of the race card, there’s only one thing left for him to do.
Come out of the closet.

sherryande on February 20, 2009 at 10:59 AM
first, if reid tries to oust burris on ethics reasons, then the republicans will start working on chris dodd. and reid will not let that happen.
2d, the Senate GOP should keep their mouths shut about this & start talking about positive things they want to do (like undo everything bambi is doing).
kelley in virginia on February 20, 2009 at 11:01 AM
Burris is not going to resign – he has no shame, just like Blago. If they want him gone, they’re going to have to officially expel him, and at this point I think only the U.S. Senate can do that.
meep on February 20, 2009 at 11:02 AM
The only thing that will happen with this whole Burris thing is that he will have no clout. and so what? when the Dems control Congress, he doesn’t need clout because the money will just keep flowing, especially to Illinois, the home of the One.
kelley in virginia on February 20, 2009 at 11:05 AM
Isn’t it racist to call for the resignation of a minority politician?
katiejane on February 20, 2009 at 11:10 AM
Democrats, over the years, have made it next to impossible to get rid of anyone with the almighty ‘D’ next to their name. Perhaps this anchor around their necks will serve to remind them of how their actions do have consequences.
Republicans should provide some support to Burris. After all, it isn’t as if he was convicted of anything … yet!

DannoJyd on February 20, 2009 at 11:36 AM
Yeah, sure, you don’t support him, but you support him keeping his job…that makes sense.
How about his job is also in the hands of the Senate ethics, and of the courts.
The people are not the only arbiter of truth…hence us being a Representative Republic.
Burris is the poster boy for liberal democrat policies…he is exactly where he should be, with the other tax evaders, lobbying sucking, democrats, that are now such an integral part of democrat leadership and this administration.

Seriously, leave him where he is. He is absolutely no more criminal than any other Democrat in the Senate and he will serve us well in coming elections if Republicans can learn to find their a$$ with both hands in their hip pockets. No guarantee there.

I grew up in this cesspool of a city, where this type of crap is an everyday event. He won’t resign, no one here in Illinois (outside the GOP) will demand his resignation. Hizzhonor da mayor is strangely quiet except for saying he want cameras on every corner. Good luck trying to expel Roland Burris or trying to get him to resign. He’s armed with the backing of the machine in Chicago.
He was introduced and supported at a Chicago Civic Club get together by the man that really runs the City of Chicago. Finance Committee Chairman Ed Burke, Alderman from the 14th Ward.
He’s the “shadow Mayor”. The machine gives you nothing without his consent.

Yes, that gave them cover for the other sinister reasons. Remember, outsiders can’t criticize a black man replacing a black man to maintain numbers, well, ‘cuz we’re all cowards when it comes to talking about matters of race.

Whom would you prefer as your senator, a political hack who apparently commits perjury, which by Chicago poll standards is rather innocent, or a somewhat brighter guy who doesn’t get caught in criminality, but lies continually including about his friendship with a terrorist in whose living room the eventual senator kicked off his political career.
