As you mentioned, Russia isn’t after Kyrgystan for its bustling maritime trade. However, you are incorrect by stating this has nothing to do with a warm water port. The thing is not so much a warm water port perior- as you mentioned, they have Murmansk- but a warm water port in the Indian Ocean and/or Persian Gulf. This has been a centuries-long political dream for Moscow, and Putin obviously has mantianed that tradition.

The British managed to defeat them in round one of that match.

Now it is up to us.

Earlier this month, the U.S. spokesman in Afghanistan told the Associated Press that “I think it’s political positioning. . . . We have a standing contract and they’re making millions off our presence there.”

The spokesman, Col. Greg Julian, pointed to the fact that Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of the U.S. Central Command, had just been in Bishkek.

When Petraeus was asked in a January news conference in Bishkek about reports that the government wanted to shut down the air base, he brushed the question aside, saying he’d received high-level assurances that that wasn’t the case.

So maybe Obama got “punked” because he listened to Petraeus’ advice. Nah, couldnt be! Petraeus is a supersoldier who can do no wrong!

Technically, Murmansk is a warm-water port, in that it’s able to be active year-round do to a warm-water current. It seems a little counter-intuitive, but it’s true.

I’m wondering why you brought this up, though. Kyrgyzstan is landlocked, and there are several countries between it and any large body of water. If this was about Russian influence near the Black Sea (where it’s other warm-water port is located, although Russia has to get permission from Turkey to leave that sea), I’d understand the comment.

Of course, and our side should have understood that. It sounds as though we’re seeing the replay of the Carter administration in losing friends and influence on the foreign stage.

But I thought the Europeans like us now and really isn’t that all that matters when we go to the cocktail parties??

I predicted that Putin would have Ogabe for lunch, and what do you know…
