WaPo: Moyers tried investigating LBJ aides for homosexuality

Among media elites, no one has established himself as a person of the Left as much as Bill Moyers has, or at least not until Keith Olbermann switched from sports to hyperpartisan “news” at NBC.  Moyers regularly attacks conservatives and Republicans for their supposed human- and civil-rights flaws.  That makes the Washington Post’s revelation about Moyers’ activities in the Lyndon Johnson administration all the more compelling:

Previously confidential FBI files show that Hoover’s deputies set out to determine whether Valenti, who had married two years earlier, maintained a relationship with a male commercial photographer. Republican Party operatives reportedly were pursuing a parallel investigation with the help of a retired FBI agent, bureau files show. No proof was ever found, but the files, obtained by The Washington Post under the federal Freedom of Information Act, provide further insight into the conduct of the FBI under Hoover, for whom damaging personal information on the powerful was a useful tool in his interactions with presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Richard M. Nixon.

Johnson initially blocked the FBI from obtaining a sworn statement from Valenti or approaching the photographer, asserting that Valenti was “attracted to the women and not to the men,” files show. But under FBI pressure, the president relented and approved an investigation of his close friend. …

Even Bill Moyers, a White House aide now best known as a liberal television commentator, is described in the records as seeking information on the sexual preferences of White House staff members. Moyers said by e-mail yesterday that his memory is unclear after so many years but that he may have been simply looking for details of allegations first brought to the president by Hoover. …

Seven days later, DeLoach pressed Johnson again and he relented. In the same conversation, a memo shows, they discussed a request from Moyers, then a special assistant to Johnson, that the FBI investigate two other administration figures who were “suspected as having homosexual tendencies.”

Just noting it for the record.  When Moyers sounds off on alleged Republican bigotry, perhaps this will serve as a useful reminder that Moyers can hardly cast the first stone.

Liberals are fine with invasion of privacy as long as it’s for their own personal and political gain. But dare investigate one of them and they howl about constitutional rights.

They’re not just hypocrites, they’re total frauds.

JammieWearingFool on February 19, 2009 at 2:35 PM

Seems like Bill has been overcompensating for his own egregious illiberal behavior by becoming a hyperliberal and throwing rocks at conservatives.

Delicious!

rockmom on February 19, 2009 at 2:37 PM

so is moyer a homo-phobic liberla jerk?

Why bring something this insignificant up from the past?

who cares…

upinak on February 19, 2009 at 2:38 PM

Moyers had his GAYDAR working…
Too bad his memory is not what it used to be…I think Hillary had the same problem…
Sidenote:
Notice how the liberal elite embrace homosexuals, how they state their is nothing wrong with that lifestyle…but threaten to sue anyone who calls them a homosexual? And gets offended if accused of homosexual activity?

right2bright on February 19, 2009 at 2:39 PM

The hypocrisy and double standards of the left never cease to amaze me. Honestly, though,,it really does not amaze me,,,,it is ops normal for them,,,nothing amazing here.

I gather that’s your way of saying you think it’s irrelevant.

Tell me, how many years before you were born was WWII? Perl Harbor? Hiroshima? The “Holocaust”? Are they irrelevant as well? Not Moyers’ appalling hypocrisy is in the same leagues as those events, but if the number of years before your were born counts as a measure of the relevance of an event, I guess you think the Big Bang is pretty “meh” as well?

RMCS_USN on February 19, 2009 at 2:51 PM

Only a few weeks before the 1964 election, a powerful presidential assistant, Walter Jenkins, was arrested in a men’s room in Washington. Evidently, the president was concerned that Barry Goldwater would use that against him in the election. Another assistant, Bill Moyers, was tasked to direct Hoover to do an investigation of Goldwater’s staff to find similar evidence of homosexual activity. Mr. Moyers’ memo to the FBI was in one of the files.

When the press reported this, I received a call in my office from Mr. Moyers. Several of my assistants were with me. He was outraged; he claimed that this was another example of the Bureau salting its files with phony CIA memos. I was taken aback. I offered to conduct an investigation, which if his contention was correct, would lead me to publicly exonerate him. There was a pause on the line and then he said, “I was very young. How will I explain this to my children?” And then he rang off. I thought to myself that a number of the Watergate figures, some of whom the department was prosecuting, were very young, too.

So it was all just political payback seeking blackmail/revenge fodder rather than simple homophobia.

Moyers bad memory? Hardly. This guy sill whines about every anti-war memory he has from the Vietnam Era , yet he cannot remember reporting on “acts gay” tendencies of individuals in the Johnson Administration. He should devote an episode of “Moyers Journal” to answer these findings!

This is WHY i dont trust any
liberal commentator
liberal collumnist
liberal news organization
liberal web site
liberal search engines (google, yahoo)

because once they find out who you are..
and they will ….

all of their power will be directed to finding out anything about you.. and they WILL use it to destroy you..

Several main stream search engines
Happily turned over to the secret chinese service
several bloggers (after all the liberals didnt mind)
if they ended up in concentration camps or worse shot dead..

So i warn all of you and myself too
we cannot expose ourself to anything which the leftist communsits could potentially use to try and blackmail us
or worse destroy us..

and believe me these liberal creeps

WILL DO IT.. as this article so eloquently shows..

Get ready

As a gay man, I have long thought that nobody was as dangerous to the gay community as straight liberals. Gay-bashing conservatives don’t even pretend to be your friend; you know to be on guard with them. It’s the two-faced types you have to keep looking over your shoulder for.

It was 40 years ago.

What he should say is that he regrets his actions from four decades ago, but that he was acting in a way (rightly or wrongly) that he believed was of benefit to the president he served… what he should do is stop assuming that every act by a conservative is a secret plot to bring back slavery and publicly flog homosexuals.

Maybe Moyer’s hatred of conservatives is merely his projection of his own homophobic instincts onto people who he assumes are just like him.

Somewhere there is a disconnect that always shows up on election day. Perhaps a lesser-of-two-evils thing?

I’m sure Moyers would have accepted this excuse from Reagan.

Tzetzes on February 19, 2009 at 4:40 PM

Why were they investigating anybody for homosexuality? Okay, I know it used to be illegal. But, didn’t they have more important crimes to investigate, like private citizens using marijuana for personal reasons and peacefully smoking it in the privacy of their own homes?

Tzetzes on February 19, 2009 at 4:42 PM

So Moyers is a hypocrite…… is that pretty accurate bumper sticker?

Miwagi on February 19, 2009 at 4:49 PM

I’m a Masterpiece Theater/Antiques Roadshow fan, but I will not give PBS one cent of my money as long as they keep broadcasting Bill Moyers (and those stupid infomercials). The doo wop concert they play incessantly every pledge period needs to go too.

Also, how does this help Michelle Obama’s children?

I love Moyers for the hypocritentertainment value. Trashing Bush on Iraq, after he was spinning LBJ shipping out 70K troops to Vietnam, acting as PR hitman for the “Great Society”. What a tool.

Tzetzes on February 19, 2009 at 4:42 PM

A holdover from Edgar Hoover, then JFK (remember he and his brother were investigating MLK).
Hoover ploy was to find something “dirty” then blackmail the politician.

right2bright on February 19, 2009 at 5:28 PM

Probably thought they should be brought out of the closet so they could become the heroes of the radical ’60s Left.

Other than that, I can’t see why a Marxist would be interested. They love anything that rubs Christians and Conservatives the wrong way.

BlameAmericaLast on February 19, 2009 at 5:48 PM

How is this worthy of mentioning? How does this show hypocrisy?

Did you guys even read the article?

In those days, being homosexual or having a homosexual in your administration was political death . LBJ saw that Republicans were snooping around, so he tried to vet his team to find out what the snoopers might discover. He put Moyers on the task.

Now sure, it would have been great if LBJ had come out saying “I dont care who’s homosexual and who’s straight. The people in my administration are the best people for the job.” But he didnt, and frankly, that wasnt a realistic option at the time.

So what did Moyers do that was so bad?

On the other hand, the Republican party was clearly trying to dig up dirt. I’m not sure this is an episode that HotAir really wants to publicize.

orange on February 19, 2009 at 5:48 PM

orange, it means Moyers is a hypocrite with Alzheimer’s, apparently.

I’m SHOCKED! Ya mean the guy who likes to spout off from the high moral ground doesn’t like gay people?

Mr Morality, the guy who screams about personal liberty, was shoving his nose into the private life of others?

Next thing you’ll tell me is that Obama doesn’t walk on water!

GarandFan on February 19, 2009 at 6:50 PM

that he may have been simply looking for details of allegations first brought to the president by Hoover.

If Moyer’s memory is clouded why would he guess this about Hoover? Leave the dead in peace Bill and man up!

Herb on February 19, 2009 at 7:15 PM

At long last we now know the inspirational context of the infamous Moyers anti-Goldwater political ad (the daisy ad).

“He loves me, He loves me not….”
