Oh my: DeMint will try to force vote next week on the Fairness Doctrine

posted at 9:12 pm on February 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

Doubtless it’ll be voted down, but it’s a perfect excuse for talk radio to raise the alarm bells and prime the public for the real battle to come — especially so soon on the heels of The One’s opposition to the Doctrine. Smart politics.

Sen. Jim DeMint announced that he will force a vote next week on a bill that prevents the Federal Communications Commission from reinstating the Fairness Doctrine.

The South Carolina Republican’s bill, the Broadcaster Freedom Act, is cosponsored by John Thune, R-S.D., and 27 others and will be offered as an amendment to the D.C. Voting Rights bill…

Sen. DeMint stated: “I’m glad President Obama finally confirmed his opposition to the Fairness Doctrine, which attacks the right of free speech on talk radio, but many Democrats in Congress are still pushing it.

“With the support of the new administration, now is the time for Congress to take a stand against this kind of censorship. I intend to seek a vote on this amendment next week so every senator is on record: Do you support free speech or do you want to silence voices you disagree with?”

If you want to say thanks, here’s your chance. Better yet, use the opportunity to urge him to make sure “localism” is covered in his amendment. The Democrats aren’t stupid; when they try to reinstate Fairness, it won’t be called Fairness. Raising public awareness means, first and foremost, calling attention to the backdoor means of reintroducing the doctrine. If it’s done, it’ll be done by stealth, not by The One ramming it down our throats.

More of Reagan’s deregulation and we know how well that turned out.

Just to be fair, here is the response to rush’s “I want him to fail” comment by Malloy:

“They’re worse than useless. These are terrorists. These are domestic terrorists. They want the country to fail, for God’s sake. They want exactly what anyone who attacked this country on September 11, 2001 wanted. The real internal terrorists are the Republicans, I mean, isn’t that clear? Rush Limbaugh is a bigger threat to this country than Osama bin Laden. He’s a bigger threat than anybody that the CIA can invent. He’s a bigger threat than any terrorist that ever leveled its sights against the United States, Limbaugh is, so why isn’t he arrested and sentenced for treason?”

Of course, KO would have to have a con rebuttal.

Then again I’m attempting to be logical, and the Democrats probably aren’t. Hey, if they want to start this fight now, I agree…let’s be aggressive about it.

Erich66 on February 19, 2009 at 10:28 PM

See, that’s my fear. They’ve rammed through and side-stepped so many things in the first month, I think its good to shine as much light on some of their plans as possible. As a bonus, it will make all of these liberals in DC STFU about it. They are holding it over our heads like the Sword of Damocles. Make them put up or shut up and we’ll deal with it in any other form when we have to.

Wonderful. It’s a very clear question, which s/b easy to answer.

The Democrats aren’t stupid

Yes, they are. It c/b used against them some day and it goes so much against true liberalism. Alas, today’s Democrats are neither liberal, nor democratic. They’re just power-sharks, out to exploit the fools who vote for them. They are the modern day serfmasters.

Of course an anal suppository such as yourself fully got behind President Bush when he was trying to protect this country from Islamo-nazis. Oh yeah that’s right “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism” as long as the dissent is against a GOP president in a time of war. What Rush Limbaugh (full disclosure I was never a great fan of his) said was that if Barkey Hopey McChange was trying to bring this country towards Eurotrash Socialism that he hopes he fails and so do I.

The Obamafied kool-aid drinkers have been duped. They won’t realize they’ve been duped until it’s too late… and even then, they’ll most likey never admit to it. The media absolutely adores this man, and more than 50% of the US sheeple are completely zombified by him. Today, the Obamessiah was in Canada talking about global warming.

HalJordan on February 19, 2009 at 10:48 PM

Mr. Demint should put together a clip reel of the various Dem pols who over the last year (and especially over the last two weeks) have been beating the drum about the Fairness Doctrine. Where there’s smoke there’s fire.

He should also shame the Democrats and call them out for being against the First Amendment. This bill should be called the Free Speech Doctrine.

Still, part of me wishes that the Dems pull the trigger on this. This is a battle that will bloody them up something good.

That’s true. It is a good move strategically by DeMint to put the kabosh on this for the time being, particularly considering The Messiah’s “supposed” opposition to it (although I really don’t buy that). I was mainly thinking long term how this might play out.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up on an Obama high
There’s a land of hope and change that I heard of
Once in a campaign lullaby

Somewhere over the rainbow
I’ll get so much gold I’ll no longer be blue
And all the hope and change that you dare to dream for
Really does come true

So I’ll wish upon the new Messiah’s star
And wake up where DOW 8,000 is far behind me
Where my 401k no longer drops
Way above the banking flops
That’s where you’ll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow
Obama can fly
Like a Bird over the rainbow
Why then, oh why too can’t I?
Some day I’ll wish upon the new Messaih’s star
And wake up where the forecloser is far behind me
Where mortgage payments melt like lemondrops
Way above the housing bubble flops
That’s where you’ll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow
Obama can fly
Like a bird over the rainbow
Why then, oh why too can’t I?
If Messiah Obama can fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why too can’t I?

These Democrats are at war with America! This is pure fascism!! Voting to shut us up!! They want to shut us up, deny us information about all of their conniving schemes and law breaking!! Be able to feed us the propaganda they choose!!
This is not American!! This is Nazi Germany! This is Communist Red China!
Filthy pigs! The Democrats are just filthy pigs! Is that too harsh?? Oh my! I guess I should use nicer words to describe the fascism of the filthy pigs called Democrats!!
Any politician that chooses to control and interfere with the free flow of political information,, to stop dissent and public criticism,, to sensor and shut down through intimidation and abuse of their own powers,,, are filthy pigs!!
They want to ban free speech!! They want to ban and shut down the few people on the public airwaves that expose their crimes!!
These so called governmental officials,, Senators, congressman and woman,,, do not pay the very taxes they heap on us! They can drive drunk with impunity, strike law enforcement officers with impunity, their offices are considered justice free sanctuaries, havens for the criminally insane,, temples where only gods may dwell and man made laws are unenforceable.
They do not yet wear crowns,, but they have all the trappings, pomp and arrogance of fat little kings.
I wrote they want to ban free speech,,, no,, that is not it!! My mistake! They want to ban the truth!! That is their real goal! To stop the truth,, so that they may freely spread their lies!!

“The United States can…be proud that it has institutions and a structure that permit its citizens to express honest dissent, even though those who do so may be maligned by the highest official in the land.”
New York Times

“In a free and republican government, you cannot restrain the voice of the multitude.”

As you can see, I need to be schooled on the views of certain politicians, but isn’t/wasn’t Romney a socially conservative Republican. Isn’t he against gay marriage and abortion? Heck, I’m all for socially moderate and fiscally conservative Republicans. We’ll need them to have a snowball’s chance in hell in states like Florida and especially Illinois. Maybe Mark Kirk can win in Illinois, although it might be pretty difficult considering that Chicago basically runs Illinois. It looks that way anyway. Well, two things. One is we gotta agree on whether it’s “the MSM will not report it” or “Everybody watches Fox News and listens to Rush, and who cares about the three nuts who watch MSNBC?”

But more to the point, this is the job of the Republican Reps and Senators to stand up and say, this is an atrocity. this isn’t some kind of tax number 145. This is about free speech. They should raise hell.

Assuming we all agree on what we think about the Dems and their stimulus, name three most outrageous things about the bill which was recently signed into law. And if you can’t cite three specific things, don’t you think the Republican members of Congress failed at their job?

Excellent article linked to from another thread: http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=MzAyZDIzMzdkMmMyOWYxNTlmNDU5MjQ5MzQ1Y2FmYTE=

It highlights much more astutely the failure of the Republicans to speak pointedly about real issues instead of making ridiculous accusations such as “OMFG, you’re so not above politics and so totally not bipartisan”.

radiofreevillage on February 20, 2009 at 12:35 AM

Three things? 1) Didn’t consult the Republicans (despite being totally post-partisan) 2) The redistribution scheme disguised as tax breaks…ie., you or I won’t see one penny back from this plan on our taxes…we will pay people who don’t pay taxes because they don’t earn enough money to pay taxes in the first place and get an EITC. 3) The big 3 auto bailout…nope, let them fail…I’ve owned 4 GM cars in my life…4 too many.

No, the entire package was an outrage…the way it was pushed through as an “emergency measure”. I think the only emergency was that it was passed by the DEMOCRATS before anybody had a chance to even know the full extent of the onerous provisions it contained…just ask Chuck Schumer about that one.

Second, even if your argument is that it was the Republicans fault..which is easily falsifiable, then, at most, that was an act of omission..the Democrats have waited for many years to achieve the majority to pass this bill, no matter what the Republicans thought…they got their wish…sink at least 2 generations of Americans in debt (thus, dependency), on top of what they will have to do just to get on in life…nasty.

AUINSC on February 20, 2009 at 1:14 AM

I think your response simply once again proved me correct. We have a trillion dollars worth of a nightmare, and not a single thing you said could be turned into an effective talking point similar to the now famous “bridge to nowhere”.

Your 1) is just a baby whining. I for one don’t get this bipartisan crap. Why would I vote for one party over the other if all bills are bipartisan? Obviously, none of them are with a few exceptions, so this charge is meaningless, and it’s no surprise that people don’t care about it.

2) is correct and fair but it’s not an “outrage”. If you think that people will be outraged by the idea of giving the poor some money (although how it’s done in the bill is wrong, I agree here!) then you don’t live on this planet.

3) is also not an easy talking point.

I think the Republicans need to read the bill and find all bullshit that it contains and then talk about the most egregious abuses. I’m not blaming the Republicans for having the bill passed. I’m blaming them for not mounting even a pretense of a credible and effective opposition to it.

I get it…but, what color is the sky on your planet again?

Dude…do you know your fellow citizens at all? What neighborhood do you live in? Where do you work? Can I hire on there?

Yes, I think everything you said is right except…54% of this (formerly outstanding) country doesn’t buy it. But yes, we are fighting an uphill battle and have been since the 60s…move along, nothing new to see here.

So, I agree..If somehow we could elect people who actually put their country before their own self-interest (and, to be fair, we still have a few of these people left), then we would be a lot better off…now go out there and kick some ass…and convert some folks to the right way of thinking…I’m 100% with you on that.

So, what is your plan?

DeMint – Release the hounds!
jrab01 on February 19, 2009 at 10:37 PM

I like to see a video of Jim DeMint and John Thune, and others who are doing this (shot from a low angle), bursting through the Senate doors, all with dark glasses, to the sound of Who Let the Dogs Out?

Perhaps I wish for too much. Graham and McCain will help squash this enthusiasm.

eeyore on February 20, 2009 at 2:55 AM

Kudos to DeMint for the effort but I’d like to see him try and attach this amendment to a bill that isn’t unconstitutional. The D.C. Voting Rights bill needs to die. If they want to make D.C. a state, then do it already. Stop trying to sneak extra Reps in through the back door and usurp our Constitution in the process.

getalife on February 19, 2009 at 10:27 PM

Scared? Of us losing some coin out of our 401Ks? No,

Scared? Of losing a war because he’s an utter incompetent? Yes.

The mere fact that for you on the left, dissent towards the war and your own military was the highest, most revered form of patriotism should get the millennium irony award now that you’re harping of the damage we’ll do by protesting the biggest liberal giveaway and pay for play in recorded history.

Where was your patriotism, where was your fear while we were bleeding on the battlefield.

Sorry, I was wrong. I just assumed that Ventura was a libertarian because he supported Paul. My fault. I at least respect someone who’s a libertarian. In my opinion, their opinions are less cringe-worthy than the left’s.

I imagine that Barbara Boxer will be first in line to vote for it. God, I can’t stand her.

I was wondering what happened to her lately. She seems strangely silent since Pelosi came on the national scene. I’m sure you Californians see more than enough of her, but the rest of the country hasn’t – not that we’re missing anything..

Ann NY on February 20, 2009 at 7:30 AM

If it’s done, it’ll be done by stealth, not by The One ramming it down our throats.

Kinda like this backdoor move against gun ownership by a Chicago Democrat:

Synopsis As Introduced

Amends the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act. Provides that any person who owns a firearm in this State shall maintain a policy of liability insurance in the amount of at least $1,000,000 specifically covering any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person.

You aren’t really paying attention if you don’t think talk radio has an impact; Nobody was going to stop “Porkulous”, but it did stop Shamnesty, and it gets a hell of a lot of information to the public that the DEM’s would prefer to keep to themselves.

I could not disagree more with your comments. Talk Radio, Rush, Mark Levin did EXACTLY what we needed… They brought to the American people the FACTS about the horrible power grab, the pork and the hidden gem on Health Care… The American people responded by the MILLIONS and flooded the faxes, phones, e-mails… 100 to 1 AGAINST this Liberal Socialist garbage… The FACT is that our voices were IGNORED by the very people WE elected… They ignored the will of the people… And they had no fear in doing so with the help of the MSM in the pocket of the Libs and The Messiah. Talk Radion got the word out, otherwise there would have been no accounting for the horrors headed our way… At least now, we can all say this is OWNED by the far left, this garbage is THEIRS… Republicans held the line, except for the traitors, and we will make those three pay, I hope, next election. Without Talk Radio the TRUTH would have been silenced and that IS THE GOAL of the far left radicals… They MUST HAVE no opposition to The Messiah, no truths being told, keep the American people in the dark, lies, lies and more lies, go unreported… No longer can the American people trust the MSM to be fair and do it’s job as a Government watchdog, they have become a lapdog instead. So you and everyone else better get ready to fight harder then we did against the Porkulous… If Talk Radio goes silent, so does our voice, our beacon of hope, our truth… YOUR FREEDOM!

Are you going to be ready when America needs you to defend her? Are you ready to fight for the Constitution?

Let’s roll!

Mark Garnett on February 20, 2009 at 7:56 AM

Free Speech… When listening to the radio, if an individual doesn’t like what he/she is hearing, all they have to do is switch to another station. It’s called options! Bring it on you fascist bastards…

Agreed… Remember without Rush, Mark, Sean (whom I don’t really like) and the hundreds of others on localy the American people would not have acess to ANY real facts anymore… The MSM died in 2008 during the election and is still totaly in the tank for The Messiah and his cult.

I’m political crushing on this Demint guy. What a winner for the party. Checked him out on weekend FOX show “How to Spend a Trillion Dollars” with Bret Baier. On point through and through. I really don’t like him either.

I thought the MSM died a few years before but 2008 made people realize how much the rotting corpse stunk.

The Democrats aren’t stupid

Who says?

Their pointy-headed staffers who do all of the work may not be, but the collection of horses asses who read the speeches, are tremendously stupid.

By far the least intelligence and least accomplished people to ever darken the halls of Congress is the current majority party.

It’s the worst Congress ever with the worst Speaker ever and the worst Senate Majority Leader ever, with the least qualified, least accomplished, most inexperienced president to boot.

So we have that going for us.

Thank God I live in Texas, which has two Republican senators. I was just mentioning Boxer because every once in a while she shows up on TV doing her best to look smart. They showed her little speech about Lindsey Graham waving that bill in the air and how he didn’t do that during the Bush years, as if that’s relevent. She just makes my skin crawl; maybe that’s why she was elected. She can annoy the crap out of the right or right of center. But yeah, she’s a vindictive bitch. Just gotta say it. :)

NathanG on February 20, 2009 at 9:11 AM

Offense not defense. I like this. DeMint et al. should push votes on this and other matters related to our freedoms at every opportunity. This will call attention to the liberal agenda and force the each Congressman to go on record. Love the strategy.

Well, if we can’t trust the Republicans to even convincingly highlight the worst aspects of bills proposed by the Democrats, then we’re really in trouble.

I think there needs to be a constant pressure of Republican Congressmen to continue to speak on these issues. Is there a think tank or a website or something that has a good list of what’s wrong with the stimulus. No “it’s not bipartisan” bs, please! If so, let’s find it and forward to congressmen and demand that they speak on that.

Republicans need to BEAT THE DRUM, go line by line calling out the lie of the Messiah that “There are no earmarks and no pork” in this bill… They need to continue to go on TV and Radio and tell the American people exactly why they opposed and still oppose the bill, even though it is passed into law… They need to go line by line to show that this bill is garbage full of money for STD’s, ACORN and a hidden Health Care part that WILL KILL SENIORS thru regulated / rationed care… Hammer this at every single turn… Hold the far left radical Messiah’s feet to the fire on this POS bill…

Lather
Rinse
Repeat

Make bold, bright, broad contrasts between free Americans and those in slavery to Socialism… Producers / Leeches!

Excellent quote. A wonderful example of how people like Molloy and Bathtub Boy regularly engage in referring to Republicans as bigger dangers than Al Qaeda, while fallaciously making the accusations that Fox News and Rush Limbaugh do the same.

You quoted possibly the most deranged member of your side, perhaps comparable to the most lunatic rantings of Alex Jones, as he could be considered fringe on the right.
