Most hated man on the Internet basically living like a hunted animal
posted at 9:50 pm on February 19, 2009 by Allahpundit
Yeah, this turd again. Ever since his episode of “Wife Swap” aired, he’s become persona non grata … everywhere. Just watch the video. 24-hour security, resignations from two nonprofits, and now even his business is in jeopardy. Question: Are we sure this dude wasn’t just playing a part?
A longtime family friend of the Fowlers, who attended the family’s TV viewing party Jan. 30, said Fowler had prepared friends for his appearance by telling them that he’d hammed it up for the cameras and followed the producer’s directions to be confrontational…
“He was definitely playing a character,” the friend said. “He just carried a bad choice too far.”
The backlash toward Fowler and his family has ended some promising business relationships, the friend said, leaving the family “overwhelmed and a little stunned by all of this.”
“I’m sure they’re going to have a tough time putting things back together just to get back to where things were,” the friend said. “I think Stephen wishes there were a way to repair this more thoroughly.”
The deeper question, I guess, is whether hamming it up should excuse his overweening douchebaggery towards the woman he was paired with. Verdict: Yes. Back off, Kelly! Leave Fowler alone!

I go by what was said when this story first broke – he came on the show as a favor to his wife, then she had to apologize for his behavior, which she says didn’t entirely surprise her. The only surprise to her was how outlandish he was when they watched the show for the first time. Seems to me that if it was an act, that would’ve come up as soon as the death threats started flying.
Kinda reminds you of Simon Cowell, doesn’t it?

A typical San Fran liberal is unmasked and as Sheryl Crow did with her completely serious “one sheet of toilet paper per customer” when it blows up in their face, he’s only “hamming it up for the cameras as ABC instructed” and she’s only being “satirical”.
Marcus on February 19, 2009 at 10:01 PM
Oh, so he was just playing the role of a liberal elitist in San Francisco. Which explains why he serves on non-profit environmental boards, lives in SanFran, and his wife is saying he needs help.

He played the stereotypical lefty douche…even though this country voted the political equivalent of this sniveling wad into office, when it’s shown for what it is…it’s ugly and most Americans hate it. Yeah, the death threats are over the top…but the fact that he claims he didn’t realize this would go over badly is no excuse…the fact that you live here and don’t understand anything about the country except what you see in SF is at least a misdemeanor in and of itself. Sorry, no pity for anything, except the death threats.

This will not be allowed. Not in the new Obama-led nation. Stupidity should be consequence free; I’ve seen the laws promising this in various areas.

I was born & raised in San Francisco. AHoles like this guy are commonplace.
I worked as a janitor at a country club when I was sixteen, and I remember two insanely rich guys, sitting in front of the fire, trading which one of them was the “bigger criminal” based on their parking and traffic violations. I remember one saying, “One more offense like that and I’ll be as guilty as a Republican!” to which both just guffawed. All while I cleaned the windows.

I don’t think Fowler was putting on an “act”…I don’t even watch that show, but the show he was on I just happened to have watched. Glad I did, ’cause he was a typical limo lib.
What I really still don’t understand…again, he had to have known what he was getting into. Don’t you have to apply to want to be on that show? Why would he agree to that?
JetBoy on February 19, 2009 at 10:30 PM

There is no way on God’s green earth that I could ever say those things to another human being – I don’t care WHAT the producers were asking me to do. That excuse just doesn’t wash – Period.
This guy is a despicable elitist prig. Growing up, if I EVER said anything, and I mean ANYTHING, that my father could construe as derogatory or disrespectful towards my mother he would have come across the table at me. Until the day my mother died, when my dad was 84 he STILL would have physically attacked me were I to disrespect my mother.
I’m from Missouri. What I’m getting at is I don’t care what the repercussions would be, had that smug POS said those things to my wife in front of me there would not be enough camera men, producers etc. that could have restrained me from kicking the shit out of that guy. I’m getting mad just sitting here thinking of his supercilious smirk. What an insufferable ass.
I hope somebody kicks the shit out of that guy. I mean really kicks the shit out of him. And please, spare me any admonitions against violence. The world would be a better place were people like Stephen Fowler to pay an immediate price for this type of behavior.
Charles Martel on February 19, 2009 at 10:50 PM
To coin a favorite phrase of my “progessive” friends in this clown’s hometown of San Fran, (one they were excessively fond of hitting me with every single time President Bush hit a rough spot or committed some verbal gaffe): “When you put poison out into the world, dont be surprised when it comes back to you.”
Act or no act, this guy deserves the approbation he’s getting. Not the death threats of course but those come from freaks, not decent people. All decent people should be and are appalled at this Uber Clod.

carbon_footprint on February 19, 2009 at 11:06 PM
I saw the show when my wife yelled that I had to see this. What a pompous and arrogant brit. Their kids have hyphenated names. It was just like the Southpark “Smug Storm” show where San Fran elites fart in wine glasses and sniff it while their kids with hyphenated last names are upstairs doing drugs. Stephen Fowler kept wearing stupid black T-Shirts with typical San Fran Libtard mantra on them.
I hope his business dries up and he is forced to clean up after the loads of homeless people in San Fran.
RobertJ78704 on February 19, 2009 at 11:08 PM
Re: playing a part…
I haven’t heard him say that yet. His apology, which seemed relatively comprehensive and if not heartfelf, then earnest, made no mention of his being a puppet.
Take him at his word. He behaved like a horrid ass for reasons he can’t explain (though i have my theories.)
Until he himself says he was playing a part (which defense was sorta available to him) let’s not try to whitewash the whole thing.

OH, HOW RIGHT YOU ARE MY FRIEND!
If the rest of the country could see the anchors of the three major networks, the editors of the major newspapers, and the hollywood/rock stars in their most private of moments discussing America, they would see this guy!
This is why I get crazy when I see conservatives on TV allow these people to dictate the conversation. When Couric was grilling Palin about her experience, she could have shot back, “What do you mean, Katie? Are you questioning my experience? Why didn’t you ask Barak Obama the same question? Could it be you have an agenda, Katie?”
Conservatives need to go into those interviews with their guns loaded for war, and have the courage to use a full clip on those scum. Remember, they are trying to make you look like a fool, turn the tables and make them look the fool.

I detest this liberal snob personality-type as much as the next person, but why would anyone take stuff that happens on a “reality” show seriously? Of course these people are acting for the camera. A wife swapping show?? Come on, now, has everyone gone insane? Anyone who is exhibitionist enough to appear in this deserves everything she gets. Actually, the Missouri woman probably got off on being treated this way.
The fact that so many people are exercised over this man makes me think there are quite a few unhealthily preoccupied people with too much time on their hands. Maybe we need a good depression to shake people up and bring them down to earth.
And now I’m wondering what’s wrong with me that I’m commenting on this assinine topic …

I have no sympathy for this narcissistic,pompous,di@kless little twit.
I don’t believe for a second that he was just hamming it up.I have seen to many liberals with this condescending attitude, bigotry toward the military, and the “I am not proud to be an American” routine by his wife
to buy their “this isn’t the Steven Fowler that I knew” routine.
These detestable liberals are in danger of losing the two things that are most important to them,
1. Their money
2. Their prestige (in their own circles)
That is all they care about so their friends are helping them with some damage control.
Some people have gone to far with the death threats and vandalism but all in all, these people are getting what they deserve.
Remember Fowlers,America is a free country, you are free to leave.

I try really hard not to notice what she looks like…but she’s so damn animated when she gets worked up during an interview; when she was interviewing the PETA chick about the suicidal lesbians making out in downtown El Paso, she was bouncing in the chair because she was getting annoyed with the nonsense…it’s horribly distracting. And I failed. I objectified her. It’s a tragic weakness I have.
austinnelly on February 19, 2009 at 11:45 PM
Reality show or not, I highly doubt this clown was just “playing a part”. Not one that was any kind of real stretch for him, anyway. He and his ilk have gotten very cocky lately, for obvious reasons. I’ve personally experienced the haughtinesss of this crowd being cranked all the way up to 10 on several occasions in the last year or so.
from the SF Chronicle article:
Please….what ignorance of human nature is contained in that statement! Pride cometh before a fall as they say, obviously Mr. Fowler is not as intelligent as he thought he was, eh?
Dreadnought on February 19, 2009 at 11:46 PM
Yes, but why did he have to play the part to such perfection?
AUINSC on February 19, 2009 at 11:52 PM
He was, but so was Will Farrell when he mocked our war dead. Some things just aren’t excused by “Someone else wrote this for me.” It shows that even though he and the producers played up “I’m more educated,” he’s clearly not that bright when it comes to common sense, street smarts, and when to resist social pressure. It’s a good object lesson. That said, I don’t think his general shunning is especially helpful anymore.
I’m thinking the producers had that in mind….
Good one, but there’s only one known Fowler, so it doesn’t quite balance out….
Oh well — in early 2009, the Bay Area got two new stars: The most loved man on the Internet (Sully) and the most hated. Never let it be said that this is not an interesting place.

I think the producers were slimy. They played the British National Anthem and a few Edward Elgar standards during some of his scenes.
Any effete muppet from San Francisco would have sufficed for this travesty but they were cowardly so they went for the King George excuse/loophole.
A “cop out” as Allahpundit might have put it.
aengus on February 20, 2009 at 12:01 AM
While I’m sure he voted for Obama, I’m also sure that Fowler also looks down on Obama. (as do most of Fowler’s liberal ilk)
In Fowler’s worldview, Obama scores points for melanin, Hawaii, looks, and education, and then loses them all for being from Chicago.
rockbend on February 20, 2009 at 12:05 AM
Then I guess your point is that he is the perfect foreign patsy? He knew nothing about American when he came here? Maybe, but he did play his witless part to perfection, don’t you agree? I mean, if your argument is to be taken seriously, he has about a 65 IQ…because, if he was really as intelligent as is claimed, he would have immediately that a part in “Wife Swap”, playing the nasty lefty foreign douche, would cost him far more than he would ever earn, no?
AUINSC on February 20, 2009 at 12:06 AM

Don’t be naive, people. When I saw this episode I knew he was hamming it up just by his T-shirt routine alone. He had those T-shirts printed up for the show. Let’s not go too self-righteous on his ass.
keep the change on February 20, 2009 at 12:14 AM
It’s quite probable that he knew nothing about America when he emigrated to San Francisco. I think his personal arrogance would likely abrogate his IQ in any and every situation. I was talking about the intent of the producers and their motivations in their quest for ratings.
aengus on February 20, 2009 at 12:20 AM
How sure are you? Do you know he doesn’t believe what he said?…because you know, after all, he said it. And, as far as his T-shirts go, isn’t that some sort of uniform you have to wear in SF, to avoid being attacked?
AUINSC on February 20, 2009 at 12:21 AM
Sad..then he’s taking the moron defense.
BTW, do you think he was so stupid that he couldn’t even tell what the producers were going for? And if he just went along with it to make a buck, then he is a total fraud…and willing to totally degrade another human being to perpetuate the lie.
Just asking, because, if what you are arguing is, in fact, the case, then there are plants smarter than this guy…but I happen to think you are reading too much into this…that you may be thinking that all foreigners will be treated this way unless he is somehow vindicated…not true.
Come to America and see for yourself…just stay away from SF.
AUINSC on February 20, 2009 at 12:28 AM
As I’ve noted on these threads before, I’m not a native Californian, having come here in 1974. I have watched an awful lot of change come over San Francisco, however, beginning with the enormous influx of Easterners in the ’80s.
Believe me, native San Franciscans are only too clear on the attitude problems that got imported with New Yorkers. One of the primary ironies that those more superior than we never noticed was that New York/Boston etc etc, The End of Hip, was still back there, and most Californians would have been only too happy if the black-wardrobe brigade had gone back where they belonged.
Another notable feature of these little snots is that they are endlessly impressed with anything that smacks of our betters in Europe, as displayed by this twit. I’m sure his wifey is the envy of all her friends for his “classy” accent.
San Francisco was a place of real class only 30 years ago, where blue-collar people hung with professionals, and real tolerance was the order of the day -”do whatever you like, just don’t scare the horses.” All of the posters here should thank their stars that wherever they live hasn’t so far become desirable to the ESA (Eastern Socially Attractive.) Don’t blame San Francisco for being a rape victim.
warbaby on February 20, 2009 at 12:30 AM
Nobody is blaming folks like you warbaby…there are just too few of you out there. Chin high and thank you.
AUINSC on February 20, 2009 at 12:33 AM
No acting whatsoever, unless you think that the way a typical liberal speaks to a typical conservative when said liberal is feeling “superior” is merely an act. This is the norm for these people… they are the “elites” and everyone else is scum. If anything, he felt emboldened by the presence of the Hollywood “elites” producing the show, and put his normal train of thought into words.
n0doz on February 20, 2009 at 12:36 AM
Yes, and going further I suspect Mr. Fowler (and Mr. Farrell) were quite comfortable with the “lines” they were given. Because those “lines” reflected their beliefs. And I suspect when the cameras weren’t on, Mr. Fowler’s behavior is not much different. Some of the commenters on this site apparently haven’t had the much exposure to the likes of Mr. Fowler.
Actually, I suspect he’s not that bright when it comes to a lot of other things as well. Otherwise, he wouldn’t feel the need to trumpet how “intelligent” he is all the time.
That’s for sure, and one that should be repeated a lot more often.
Ah, here’s where I disagree. Obviously, the death threats and other types of illegal harassment should stop (and should never have started). But the “general shunning” should continue, at least until he comes up with an apology far better than the one he wrote.
For example, rather than just saying he appreciates the troops (a good start, admittedly) he ought to acknowledge that reasonable people can disagree, and that the intentions of those who prosecuted and supported the war were good, even if he disagrees with them and thinks they were misguided.
You know, exhibit a real and open minded “nuanced viewpoint” instead of the phony and self-satisfied ones that are no doubt his stock-in-trade.
My favorite line from his apology:
“Some of my best friends are Midwesterners.”
Yeah, OK. Obviously this fool should read the “Idiot’s Guide to Mea Culpas” Top Ten list of “lines to avoid”.

Looks like the “big fat obnoxious redneck” got the best of you Fowler.
And how stupid is he to make fun of fat people, when his wife ran a business for weight reduction.
Hey all you clients of my wife…you are fat and obnoxious, get a life…
This guy is a total jerk…and not the brightest bulb in the room.

I don’t know anything about him. I would never let myself or any member of my family be treated the way he treated that poor woman.
Just asking, because, if what you are arguing is, in fact, the case, then there are plants smarter than this guy…but I happen to think you are reading too much into this…that you may be thinking that all foreigners will be treated this way unless he is somehow vindicated…not true.
I’m not saying the guy was a plant. I just think that the producers were probably SF snobs themselves but too cowardly to pick one of their for own for the episode so they got this insufferable British liberal guy as a stand-in for their opinions.
Come to America and see for yourself…just stay away from SF.
I will. I’d like to see the Grand Canyon.

Keep in mind, the source of this latest groveling.
Playing a part my ass. I don’t buy it.

San Francisco was a place of real class only 30 years ago, where blue-collar people hung with professionals, and real
Quite right. My farmboy Father was stationed there in the 1940′s and 50′s while in the Navy, and thinks it was the coolest city on Earth. It’s too bad that the home of Joe DiMaggio and Dirty Harry has turned into what it is now.

AP,
You’re no better than this guy.
Have you ever lied?
Have you ever stolen?
the list goes on and on. For you to pass judgement on this guy is ridiculous.

TRUTH HURTS!
What else can you say? He just wanted to let her the know the disadvantages of being a high school dropout. I hope she has learnt her lesson and pledged that she’s not going to let her kids end up like her. This should serve as a lesson for all those Hillbillies, Rednecks thumpers and toters to get an education. Read a book other than the Bible, it might just help.

Here’s the perfect example of what destroyed San Francisco. This kind of breathtaking arrogance is precisely what has ruined what was once the greatest city in the country. (See my post at 12:30)
I can only hope you stay forever in NYC. You richly deserve each other.
