Kathleen Sebelius to HHS

posted at 8:06 am on February 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

To no one’s great shock, Barack Obama has selected Kathleen Sebelius as his third choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services.  The obligatory trial balloon comes to us through the New York Times, which must be thrilled to once again provide that service.  Many expected the governor of Kansas to have been selected from the beginning:

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas, an early Obama ally with a record of working across party lines, is emerging as the president’s top choice for secretary of health and human services, advisers said Wednesday.

Should she be nominated, Ms. Sebelius would bring eight years of experience as her state’s insurance commissioner as well as six years as a governor running a state Medicaid program.

But with President Obama about to begin a drive to expand health coverage, an issue on which the two parties have deep ideological divisions, her strongest asset in the view of the White House may be her record of navigating partisan politics as a Democrat in one of the country’s most Republican states.

Sebelius makes a lot of sense for Obama, for several reasons.  She is pro-abortion, but still managed to get elected in a normally Republican state, showing that she has the kind of political skills that Obama can use in his Cabinet — and that Kansas Democrats will sorely miss once she’s gone.  She had much more experience at health-care management than Tom Daschle, without the baggage of being a lobbyist in the industry.

Why didn’t Obama choose her first?  Perhaps he did and she turned him down, but it seems more likely that Obama wanted to pay off Daschle for his early support.  Sebelius came on board later in the campaign.  Daschle’s vision of national health care was more expansive, at least publicly, and that may have been another factor.

One other factor: as governor, her taxes are probably more in order, or at least have been recently vetted.  Being in the public spotlight at least suggests that she’s already dotted the Is and crossed the Ts.

Having a pro-abortion HHS Secretary is really nothing new; every Democratic President has had one.  I find it more ironic that Team Obama leaked this on the same day as Eric Holder’s “nation of cowards on race” speech.  Remember Sebelius’ McCarthyist moment during the campaign?

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius accused Republicans on Tuesday of injecting race into the presidential campaign, arguing that they are using “code language” to convince Midwesterners that Democrat Barack Obama is different from them.

“Have any of you noticed that Barack Obama is part African-American?” Sebelius asked with sarcasm. “(Republicans) are not going to go lightly into the darkness.”

Sebelius was responding to a question from the audience at the Iowa City Public Library about the tenacity of Democrats and whether they would fight for victory as hard as Republicans in the closing weeks of the election.

She did not elaborate on her comment.

I’ll donate to the re-election campaign of the first Republican Senator during her confirmation hearing to demand an explanation of why she called Republicans racists on the campaign trail.  The press might want to ask her about it as well — if they weren’t busy covering up for her.

As long as she is pro-abortion she can help fully realize Obastard’s vision for America. A gal has to stand for something.

Kansas, as in the state that couldn’t meet payroll? Seems she’s doing a fine job. We need her in Washington!

I’ll second your donation. Let’s make it too tempting an offer to resist.

I’m thrilled she is leaving Kansas, but sad she will still have an impact on us at a federal level. If the republicans in Kansas weren’t so cowardly, she could have been beaten in the past. Now, we’ll probably end up with Brownback.

I wonder what Hillary thinks of this. Sebelius was mentioned as a possible VP choice, but then it would have been hard to expain (tactfully) why Hillary wasn’t chosen.

So Hillary gives up a safe Senate seat to go to Japan to drink tea (all the important foreign policy portfolioes having been handed out to envoys). EVen the UN Ambassador reports directly to Obama.

If Crazy Uncle Joe is told to take one for the team and decide not to run in 2012 due to “health reasons,” one wonders if Obanm would really have any fear of or need of Hillary (and would he want the baggage that Billary would bring).

Not just on the campaign trail, but everywhere. Dems are allowed to be the biggest morons in the world and all we hear from the MSM is how smart they are. It would be funny if it weren’t so serious.

The fact that Holder is not being thrown out of Justice for his incredibly stupid, and monumentally ill-conceived, speech – that had NOTHING to do with the operations of Justice – says it all. This country is going, very quickly, into the sh#tter.

Pro-choice is one thing, and of course Obama is going to have a pro-choice HHS Sec. But Sebelius comes off as almost an abortion fetishist.

I’ll donate to the re-election campaign of the first Republican Senator during her confirmation hearing to demand an explanation of why she called Republicans racists on the campaign trail.

“Why did you hurt my feelings?” is a much more relevant question for a HHS nominee than “How will you reform the health care industry?” or “what is your opinion on medicare?” or “what should we do about the prescription drug plan?”

Its regrettable that Ed isn’t a senator, or all our problems would already be fixed.

I assume the Lt. Governor will replace who was a former Republican. He will be more pro-business and more conservative than she was. I think, don’t remember for sure, that he was a former Cessna, or aircraft executive.

Good Riddance Kathy! Glad to see you go!

The governor of a failed state – what a great idea! She thinks Republicans are racists even though Obama is the only one who ever brought up the fact that he was black, and didn’t her son get in trouble with some kind of board game?

ctmom on February 19, 2009 at 8:39 AM

Does it matter?

hillbillyjim on February 19, 2009 at 8:44 AM

How ironic! President Obama chooses the Govenor of the one state of the union most owned by the abortion industry. Kansas is internationally famous for promoting and defending late-term abortion providers (having parties with them in the governor’s mansion) and ruthlessly defending them against attempts to expose them by their state’s former attorney general. I wonder if she’ll appoint her favorite abortionist, Dr. Tiller (Wichita abortionist) to her team?

The only reason Queen Kathleen got reelected is because there was not a good Republican running, but mainly because nothing happened during her term.

If I recall, the only controversy that she even had any part of was the Concealed Carry law. She vetoed it, knowing it would get easily overridden in the legislature. I think had it been close, she probably would not have vetoed.

Are her taxes in order?

That would be the least offensive of her indiscretions.

Sebelius’ abortion entanglements:

* Sebelius held a secret party for Tiller and his entire abortion clinic staff in April, 2007, at the official governor’s mansion. Photos show her pointing with apparent gratitude to Tiller, holding a campaign t-shirt featuring her name. Tiller has been charged with 19 counts of illegal abortions and faces trial next month.

* Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann has told Sebelius to refrain from presenting herself for Communion until she makes “a public repudiation of her previous efforts and actions in support of laws and policies sanctioning abortion.”

* Sebelius has opposed or vetoed several abortion-accountability bills, including popular clinic regulation legislation in 2005.

* Sebelius meddled with an investigation by the KS Board of Healing Arts in the death of Christin Gilbert, who died from a botched abortion at Tiller’s Wichita clinic in January, 2005. The Board’s politically-motivated premature conclusions covered her veto clinic regulations. The Board was recently asked to re-open that investigation due to political corruption and new evidence.

* Sebelius attended a Planned Parenthood fundraiser on the occasion of her birthday in May, 2007. PP CEO Peter Brownlie led a conga-line dance in her honor during the party. Brownlie’s clinic was later charged with 107 criminal counts of conducting illegal late-term abortions. Those charges are now pending.

* Sebelius appointed a former abortion clinic “escort” John Carmichael, a militant supporter of Tiller’s Political Action Committee, ProKanDo, to the Human Rights Commission. His name was quietly withdrawn ten months later.

* Sebelius appointed political supporter and abortionist Howard Ellis to serve on the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts after he surrendered his medical license in Missouri rather than face disciplinary action. Ellis resigned under pressure, and two months later was charged by the Board with attempting to persuade a physician to falsify records.

Mr Purple on February 19, 2009 at 8:48 AM

FINALLY she gets her payback for:

Sebelius’ comments about missing vital equipment set off a firestorm, leading to a spat between the governor and the White House, a front-page story in The New York Times, and a press release by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who assailed President Bush for vetoing an Iraq war funding bill that included $1 billion to make up equipment shortfalls for the Army National Guard.

Mr Purple at 8:48,

We all knew this loathesome appointment was coming. Thank you for your extensive round up Sebelius’ anti-life history. At least her Archbishop has already made his position crystal clear to this apostate.

Combined with Obama’s murky past allowing aborted born alive infants to die in dirty linen closets, they are perfect for one another.

It’s a sad day for even late-term babies.

No surprise on that issue, but let’s at least pretend to understand reality, here.

- Sure, this skank is a big abortion pusher, but no one’s more radical on abortion than Obama (infanticide, anyone?).

- She got elected and re-elected with a pro-abortion platform in one of the three most anti-abortion states in the country. That should give you a little different understanding of Kansas right there.

- It’s HHS. How, exactly, is this going to affect you and I? Abortion is a fact of life since 1974, and only the SCOTUS can change that, not some idiot bureaucrat.

- Doesn’t this give a better-than-even chance to put a Republicrat in the Governor’s spot there? Even if it’s only Sam Wetback?

My parents live in Kansas, and cannot wait for her to be gone (in fact, my dad’s doctor, Barnett, was the Repub candidate for gov in the last election – and got beat like a bad drum). Even somebody like Brownback would be a far better choice, despite his RINO tendencies. To me, when you look upon the face of Sebilius, you’re looking at pure evil. Her open embrace of Tiller The Baby Killer would make Josef Mengele proud!

My parents squeak by on a small state pension and Social Security. I help them out where I can, but I live in Illinois (tax hell), and can’t do as much as I’d like. In any case, they were counting on their state tax refund to buy heating propane, only to have Sebilius announce they wouldn’t be getting it any time soon.

Her health motto.

“If they had been aborted at birth, they would not be a burden on Medicare today”
I see she is glad to leave Kansas. Kansas is unable to make payroll tomorrow, friday the 20th. Kansas joins california in being unable to process tax refunds unless of course they embezzle some funds from education or other programs.

“How will you reform the health care industry?” or “what is your opinion on medicare?” or “what should we do about the prescription drug plan?”

Oh, stop, everyone knows the answer to those questions.

Reform – spend more, kill more babies.

Medicare – spend more, expand it.

Precription drug – spend more, exapnd it.

Personally I am interested in hearing her thoughts her comments. I think it’s worth talking about before the Dems destroy this country though their digusting playing of the race card.

She is attempting to join the most racist administration in recent memory.

With the various Stealth Reparation bills (class and race-based), the enitre populist tone of sticking it to the “rich”.

Of course we know who is considered “rich”, don’t we?

Well, unless you are a drooling liberal racist idiot.

Watch what happens to black in this country when Obama is done meddling. It pisses me off, and I will comment on it, because it is my freaking country. Look at the culture that is accepted, the thuggish role models, the fact that Latinos are a bigger voting block now (and cheap and in endless supply south of the border) and now back to the same old, same old with welfare? Are you f-ing kidding me?

So, ya I want to know why these clowns running MY friggin’ country are a group of dangerous racists.

The Democratic party has done an amazing job of using the bogeyman of closet racists to scare black people and other minorities away from the Party of Lincoln (founded by abolitionists) and right into the hands of the party that founded the KKK to make sure “undesirables” wouldn’t vote in elections.

Unfortunately, because the Republican party has been hopeless the past 60 years when it comes to marketing themselves, they have not been able to get rid of the lies the opposition has slandered them with in spite of the fact that their policies (e.g. school choice) would do far more to benefit minority communities than any snake oil the Democrats are selling.

So, what would you have us do? Kidnap black people and force them to be Republicans so we can have the right numerical mixture for folks like you? Or, should we continue working to reach out to members of minority communities (hopefully a lot more skillfully than we’ve been doing) and allow people of all colors to make up their own minds which party to join.

We you compare the small percentage of black people that are actually Republicans with the number of black Republicans that have been in leadership roles (Sec State, Sec Ed, Joint Chiefs, Pres RNC, etc) it would appear that there is statistically more opportunity for black people in the Republican party than in the Democrat party. All that’s required is an ability to see beyond Democrat lies and the stiff spine required to deal with being called “Uncle Tom” by prominent Democrats and media commentators and the ability to laugh it off when people throw oreos at you.

Sebelius is awesome! Not only is she pro-abortion, she stepped in to prevent the AG of KS from prosecuting Tiller the Killer when the AG wanted to bring charges against him for MULTIPLE charges of covering up young girls statutorily raped and impregnated by either family members or older boyfriends. One particular little girl was brought in pregnant by her father at 12, 13, 13 and 14. (Yes, she was impregnated twice by her father when she was 13.) Tiller covered it up, destroyed the evidence, failed to report, and Sebelius made sure he wasn’t prosecuted. Go culture of death! Hope and Change, y’all.
