Hope and Change: Police pull over man for anti-Obama sign

posted at 12:51 pm on February 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

In the good old days of America, one could express dissent without fear of arrest.  In the fascistic regime of George Bush, though, having a bumper sticker that expressed opposition meant getting pulled over by the police and having the Secret Service search your house for signs of “hate”.  Thank goodness the Thought Police days are over!

What’s that?  That didn’t happen during the Bush administration?  Actually, it happened last week:

Chip Harrison said he was driving to work when a police car followed him for several miles and then signaled for him to pull over.

”I pulled over, knowing I hadn’t done anything wrong,” Harrison said in a recent phone interview.

When the officer asked Harrison if he knew why he had been pulled over, Harrison said he did not.

”They said, ‘It’s because of the sign in your window,’” Harrison said.

”It’s not meant to be a threat, it’s a statement about abortion,” Harrison said.

What did the sign say?  “Abort Obama, not the unborn.”  The police officer took that as a threat of assassination instead of its obvious meaning, which was opposition to abortion and to Obama’s support for it.  The report filed by the police officer prompted their Internal Investigations group to apologize and offer to return the sign.  They told Harrison that they informed the Secret Service that no threat was involved, but that didn’t cut much ice with the Treasury.  They sent a pair of agents to ask for a voluntary search of the premises and an interview to make sure Harrison didn’t belong to any hate groups.

What’s next — a Fairness Doctrine for bumper stickers?

Captain Steve McCool of the Oklahoma City PD agrees now that the actions violated Harrison’s First Amendment right to free political speech, but that it was “made right” in the end by returning his sign.  Unfortunately, that’s not so.  The OCPD made it clear that expressions of dissent, even an obviously political one in which Harrison engaged, will be closely scrutinized to see that it passes muster with law enforcement.  For that matter, the Secret Service did the same by “requesting” that Harrison account for his thought processes for publishing his critique of Obama’s policies on abortion.  That does damage to the First Amendment to everyone, not just Harrison.

So much for Hope and Change.

Update: Well, the Secret Service in fact did interrogate a man for his anti-Bush bumper stickers, in August 2001:

The Secret Service has questioned a middle Georgia man whose bumper stickers say “hell with Bush” and call the president a “two-faced murderer.”

And it’s not the first time 58-year-old Jesse Ethredge’s opinion of the commander in chief has landed him in trouble with authorities.

Ethredge’s truck features a cartoon child urinating on the word “Republicans.” The bumper stickers read: “Don’t U blame me,” “Thief, Liar, Two Faced Murderer Geo W. Bush” and “Hell with Bush and all damn Republicans.”

The Secret Service paid him a visit last week, asking what the stickers meant.

This one in 2004 seems more like a threat, though:

A 19-year-old man was paid a visit by two Secret Service agents after neighbors complained about an anti-President Bush sticker on his car.

The black-and-white, postcard-sized paper printed off a Web site and taped on Derek Kjar’s car had a cartoonish depiction of Bush’s head wearing a crown, with the words “King George — off with his head.”

“Off with his head” is a rather blatant call for decapitation, something much different than “Abort Obama”.  Another incident, in which a person got a ticket for an allegedly obscene bumper sticker, did not result in a Secret Service visit, detention, or interrogation, and so is not applicable.

Advocating that the President be subject to a surgical procedure that underage girls are allowed to choose is something we should take seriously? What are you saying, abortion is murder or something?

My new bumper sticker: “Ogabe Should Have His Blisters Drained!”

I only thought the contrast between Administrations was worthy of note. I have seen/heard every form of evil picture, bumper sticker, movie, Air America parody, protest sign that was a call to outright violence against my President. If his sign was wrong, the lefts are felonious.

If it gets to the point that civilian expeditionary forces of the DOD under military command are being used to suppress Americans in the COTUS, your problems will go far beyond dealing with a mob of hysterical Obama thugs.

Bishop on February 19, 2009 at 1:53 PM

This is precisely what freaked us all out about the idea during the campaign. It was a profoundly stupid idea and both sides of the aisle were catching wind of it and it stunk…so, go figure, it would be signed quietly. Why is it that this hasn’t been talked about? Why would this not be a big deal? If I am reading this correctly, this is unprecedented. We already have volunteer corps. We already have a National Guard. He has shown us that he is willing to utilize his “masses” to put pressure on lawmakers, etc. If this is subject to the military, and the military is subject to Dear Leader, why is it that we should not be alarmed already? I want to be reassured…

Mommypundit on February 19, 2009 at 1:58 PM

The OCPD made it clear that expressions of dissent, even an obviously political one in which Harrison engaged, will be closely scrutinized to see that it passes muster with law enforcement.

Really? What happened was extremely poor judgment on the part of one police officer. As soon as this was in the hands of the department, it apologized for the mistake and tried to correct it.

You righteous indignation at First Amendment rights being compromised based on the actions of one police officer is a a little overblown. The officer should be criticized thoroughly, others should be made to understand that this is unacceptable, and that’s it. I know you have to criticize everything that is associated with Obama, but this is really making a mountain out of a molehill.

tneloms on February 19, 2009 at 1:59 PM

I guess dissent is no longer patriotic.

wildcat84 on February 19, 2009 at 1:59 PM

If someone wants to search your house, always ask for a search warrant. If they don’t have one, tell them to go get one, meanwhile, call your lawyer. I cannot believe this is going on in the United States of America. Where were the Secret Service when all those “Abort Bush” bumper stickers were all the rage? Oh, that’s right, liberals are only for free speech when you agree with them.

Yup, while listening to Rush Limbaugh go on about how the Prez is talking down the economy, trying to keep people in a “crisis” mindset….. I saw his initials and it just jumped out at me: Obama’s policies are toxic to America and Americans will be paying a heavy price for them.

Kind of like all those “assassinate Bush” stickers, pictures and, oh yeah, a MOVIE. A guy with a bumper sticker? Really? Surely with our technology, I’d hope we’d know who the real bad guys are and aren’t. Pulling this guy over and checking out his house was INTIMIDATION. It was a warning.

I don’t blame this particular incident on Obama. I blame it on the Culture of Obama: the brain dead zombies who think that everything he does is magic and every one who disagrees with him is racist and even dangerous.

Facism does not equate to “the right” – it’s more applicable to the left.

FuriousAmerican on February 19, 2009 at 2:02 PM

Oh, and does anyone seriously think that the Secret Service had a political agenda here? I mean, is the Secret Service suddenly run by Democrat goonies now? Do you think this came down from Obama himself?

Obviously, the Secret Service is charged with protecting the president and doesn’t care about politics. This may be poor judgment on their part to investigate this (though it may be standard procedure to investigate all threats once they appear in the system), but implying that there’s something political behind it is sort of ridiculous.

This group of support personnel was created precisely because our military has been expected to perform functions far outside of its original charters. Our soldiers should be concentrating on combat and light humanitarian duties, not setting up and advising city councils or coordinating order and delivery of seawater distillation equipment.

It’s purely expeditionary, the recognition of that is mentioned dozens of times throughout the document, and is subject to DoD chain of command, not direct civilian or federal control.

Mommypundit on February 19, 2009 at 1:58 PM

Well, you raise a good point–we already have a National Guard.

Now, if the new Civilian Force is limited to DoD employees only (meaning you have to work for DoD then you can be cross-trained) then I can see some sense in this–especially since a WMD hit on American soil is, in my mind, inevitable.

But if the Federal Govt is trying to raise a new army…made up of people dependent on the dole (i.e make work jobs) then that is another issue altogether.

On the other hand, if he Govt is simply preparing for a future attack via cross-training and the process to deploy human resources, then I am somewhat…well, I would think that sensible.

I would like to know more about:

1. Numbers
2. Readiness status (is this a standing force, uniforms, etc?)
3. To your point–how do they work with the National Guard, Police forces, etc (who pulls rank on who)
4. Equipment
5. And to whom or what does this new force report

The creation of ANY new armed Govt force needs close scrutiny. So far, what I read seems to indicate cross training of DoD employees.

That’s how the game is played. Liberals are in power now so incidents like these are to be downplayed, but it wasn’t long ago that many liberals harbored the fantasy that Bush would attempt to extend his stay in office, and an incident like this would have been fuel for the fire. It would be nice if people didn’t over react for effect, but I don’t have high expectations for humanity.

But cops never get it, look how they over react and freak out over someone owning a gun here. I live in Manhattan and the cops are the worst – they think they are the only ones who should be allowed to have firearms, period.

AprilOrit on February 19, 2009 at 2:29 PM

If fascism ever comes to the U.S. it will focus on the police force while starving the military into anorexic weakness.

DFCtomm on February 19, 2009 at 2:34 PM

I’m sure the ACLU will be all over this in no time.

Oh, that’s right, Free Speech is only for the supporters of the “O”. The rest of us who didn’t vote for him obviously are “confused” about our rights.

djtnt on February 19, 2009 at 2:34 PM

Just wait till we have a bunch of half educated street thugs drawn from the lowest levels of unemployed “youth” in blue shirts and Camo pants knocking on your front door asking why you have a anti-Obama sticker on your car.

WHAT WAS DUMB?! IT’S A PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE BUMPER STICKER GD!! THAT’S THE POINT! SHEESH!

max1 on February 19, 2009 at 2:31 PM

I think he was referring to the police officer doing something dumb, and not the owner of the sign.

DFCtomm on February 19, 2009 at 2:36 PM

Is that a big problem? We can probably rig a heated saddle.

I don’t blame this particular incident on Obama. I blame it on the Culture of Obama: the brain dead zombies who think that everything he does is magic and every one who disagrees with him is racist and even dangerous.

Far be it from me to defend the man – but several historians think it was his nephew and brother who did the sleeping around with the help – not TJ himself.

Don’t know -wasn’t there – but I’m willing to give the guy a benefit of the doubt.

It’s not so much hysteria as it is having a good chuckle at Liberal hypocrisy. Liberalism is so Orwellian that it’s funny–at this stage.

Montana on February 19, 2009 at 2:22 PM

Who exactly is being hypocritical here? The police officer who pulled the guy over? The Secret Service (which did the same thing during Bush’s administration)?

I’m sure you can find liberals at DailyKos and Democratic Underground who cheer this and complained about similar treatment under Bush, but is that really what you mean? Is that what this post is about?

Most saddles have a suede or leather seat, and are large enough to house a batter pack. It probably wouldn’t be difficult to rig a heated one up.

When?

Before all of you Manhattan sophisticates dump on the cop too much, remember that 170 people were killed and almost 1000 injured in Oklahoma City 14 years ago. I’m sure the Oklahoma City police haven’t forgotten.

Nothing similar about the Bush cases cited, sorry.

max1 on February 19, 2009 at 2:25 PM

Really? Did you visit those links?

The headline of this one is “Man’s anti-Bush bumper stickers prompt visit by Secret Service”: http://www.freedomforum.org/templates/document.asp?documentID=14780. And the headline is not misleading or anything. In what way is that not similar?

Or this one (“Utah man’s anti-Bush sticker prompts visit by Secret Service”): http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/news.aspx?id=13995

And there’s this one about a woman getting a ticket for an anti-Bush sticker: http://freestudents.blogspot.com/2006/03/ticketed-for-anti-bush-bumper-sticker.html.

I mean, just Google with the terms ‘bush bumper sticker secret service’ and tell me you don’t find anything similar. Are you seriously claiming that this never happened under the Bush administration?

tneloms on February 19, 2009 at 2:46 PM

When?

hawkdriver on February 19, 2009 at 2:44 PM

Read the links that ClassicCom and I provided. Or Google it. Plenty of cases.

hawkdriver on February 19, 2009 at 2:44 PM

To be honest, no matter what they thought of the case they are going to investigate, since it was ran up the flag pole by a legit city police department. I’m sure that in the overlawyered times we live in that the policy of KYA ensured it would be taken as seriously as any other potential threat.

DFCtomm on February 19, 2009 at 2:49 PM

they call abortion doctors baby likkers as in Tiller the baby killer.

Can I put “Obama is a baby likker” on my bumpersticker and then claim it’s a typo when I’m arrested by the local bubba?

How about “Obama is an unqualified/unaccomplished, corrupt, incompetent” will that fit on a bumpersticker?

What do they serve in Democrat re-education camp anyway, I hate bologna and theirs is probably made out of tofu.

NoDonkey on February 19, 2009 at 2:49 PM

Why are you all surprised?

Don’t you remember that Obama did the exact same thing during the campaign to a woman down in Texas.

She got a call from the Obama campaign soliciting her vote, and she responded that she wasn’y going to support Obama because of his vote in the Illinois Senate to allow babies to be left to die.

Few days later the Secret Service show up… You know I think I have the link bookmarked on my home computer. If nobody else posts it by tonight I will (but not until very late tonight, or even early early tomorrow morning).

No that isn’t going to fly. It was obviously a pro-life sign, and if the police officer didn’t have enough intelligence, education, and experience to make that determination on the fly, then he doesn’t deserve to be a police officer.

I remember a story online a few years back about a woman from a Red State who carried a gun for protection and she landed at Kennedy with the gun and a Bible in her bag.

The NYC cops made such a scene, they chided her for having a gun and a Bible, and detained her, put her through the absolute ringer and treated her like a common criminal – it was really too much.

We can thank Koch and Rudy – the Number one gun hater…
