Clyburn: Opposing the stimulus is racist or something

posted at 7:06 pm on February 19, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Ah, here’s that honest, non-cowardly discussion of race we’ve been looking for.

Clyburn also had some strong comments for Gov. Mark Sanford on why he thinks he opposed the stimulus.

“The governor of Louisiana expressed opposition. Has the highest African-American population in the country. Governor of Mississippi expressed opposition. The governor of Texas, and the governor of South Carolina. These four governor’s represent states that are in the black belt. I was insulted by that,” Clyburn said. “All of this was a slap in the face of African-Americans. It had nothing to do with Governor Sanford.”…

A spokesman from the governor’s office says, “Representative Clyburn is no stranger to playing the race card, because he has no defense for the runaway spending and the deficits contained in this so-called stimulus bil that will hurt our economy. Spending money at the federal level that we do not have represents a future tax increase on all South Carolinians, regardless of their color – and in the process of doing so, he’s ripping off everyone he claims to represent.”

You’ll remember Clyburn as the guy who blamed racial tensions between Obama and Hillary during the South Carolina primary on … Mike Huckabee. Needless to say, his charge is patently false: If there’s any demographic Bobby Jindal’s obviously out to get, it’s those damned pesky Cajuns. Exit question one: What are the odds that fiscally conservative Republicans would oppose a trillion-dollar spending bill? Truly, only racism can explain their shocking stance. Exit question two: Is Clyburn suggesting that Palin’s off the hook since there are no black people in Alaska? Exit question three: Does this mean the beta-male minority in New York can accuse David Paterson of trying to harm them personally with his policy stances? Exit answer: Yes.

What Clyburn is actually saying is the Stimulus only benefits African Americans. The stimulus, mind you, that he voted for. You just can’t get more racist than that. If Clyburn refuses to represent ALL people, throw the bum out!!

In my lifetime, there is one sterling example of wholesale “liberation” of slaves in toto…the former Belgian Congo, a huge part of Central Subsaharan Africa “owned” outright by King Leopold of Belgium. When Belgium decided to divest itself of the Belgian Congo [to be renamed Zaire by Mubuto Sese Seko] the Belgians merely all went home, leaving the entire country to the locals. Turned out pretty darn well, right?

The importation of slaves into the Colonies eneded in the late 18th Century. The continuation of slavery until 1865 was deemed an economic necessity by the South, and many in the North, as well. Simply put, no matter how one tries to revise history, a wholesale sudden emancipation would have caused terrible economic and social strains on a very internally weak United States had it been compelled by law between 1776 and 1860. Unfortunate, sad, but true. Had we followed the Belgian model, we’d be a lot worse off today than we are.

The continuing meme that somehow all non-Blacks in this nation “owe” all Blacks in this Nation compensation is a false premise. The vast majority of Americans, and thus their progeny, came to this country well after slavery had been abolished.

I concur completely with the reason and intellect of Dr. Thomas Sowell, and others, who are willing to look honestly at that “peculiar institution” instead of trying to extort from the many to somehow make up for the proclivities of the few.

coldwarrior on February 19, 2009 at 8:49 PM

If there’s any demographic Bobby Jindal’s obviously out to get, it’s those damned pesky Cajuns.

You do realize that Cajun is a pejorative term, right? As a member of the Acadian-American community I find it outrageous that this site would so carelessly post racial epithets in a joking manner, as if their is something funny about it.

Have you no shame, sir? No conscience, sir?

/end sarcasm.

Yes there is still slavery practiced today throughout Africa and Asia. The biggest practioners were Arab Muslims that ran the African slave trade, many millions more slaves perished in Arabia than were ever sent to the west.
That said the Civil War was not over slavery, it was about state’s rights, ie federalism as is written in the Constitution. Yes Lincoln freed the slaves after the war started but only in the Confederacy and not in the several Union states until after the war was over. I am not one of those that thinks of Lincoln as a great man, he did more to destroy the Constitution than any other president in our history. Its actually kind of funny that Obama likens himself to Lincoln since ole Honest Abe was a blatant and outspoken racist that saw blacks as inferior. I’ll go find the essay Mark Alexander wrote for the Patriot Post about Lincoln.

The essay I refer to above can be found here. Here is a sample in Lincolns own words.

The first of Lincoln’s two most oft-noted achievements was ending the abomination of slavery. There is little doubt that Lincoln abhorred slavery, but likewise little doubt that he held racist views toward blacks. His own words undermine his hallowed status as the Great Emancipator.

For example, in his fourth debate with Stephen Douglas, Lincoln argued: “I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races — that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”

Lincoln declared, “What I would most desire would be the separation of the white and black races…”

In 1860, Lincoln’s racial views were explicit in these words: “I think I would go for enslaving the black man, in preference to being enslaved myself. … They say that between the nigger and the crocodile they go for the nigger. The proportion, therefore, is, that as the crocodile to the nigger so is the nigger to the white man.”

goat on February 19, 2009 at 8:57 PM

Lincoln freed the slaves, but as more of an afterthought than an act of altruism. He once said that if he could save the Union without freeing the slaves, he would do it; if he could save the Union by freeing the slaves, he would do that; and if he could save the Union by freeing some slaves, and not others, he would do that, too. Certain Union generals issued “emancipation proclamations” earlier in the war; Lincoln retracted these orders, and punished the generals involved. I do think he was a great man, but not necessarily because of his actions as President.

uncivilized on February 19, 2009 at 9:04 PM

It makes me wonder if Obama really knows anything about Lincoln because if Lincoln had his way Obama would not be able to hold office.

I am from the south and never heard it referred to as the black belt as determined by the race of those that live there. It is called the black belt for the rich loamy soil found there.

goat on February 19, 2009 at 7:24 PM

I don’t know what South you live in, but the one in which I live has a Black Belt because of the black population in it. The soil is mostly clay and sand, so you must live in some other South where fantasies grow. There is a lively conversation about the Black Belt and the need to reach out with technology and education initiatives, especially for those who live in remote, rural areas.

Anymore, fools such as Clyburn, Holder, Obama, and other like-minded shining wits (spoonerism) strike my as nothing more than little boys (or girls, as the case may be) who have cried wolf once too often.

And this trend in NYC is the trend in the rest of the nation, overwhelmingly the vast majority of murders are committed by minorities and the rest of the crime stats are not much better. But they continue to insist we are racist for not interacting

Before Holder and his attorneys revive that practice, they should study certain facts that remain taboo in the mainstream media. For instance, the homicide rate for black men between the ages of 18 and 24 is well over ten times that of whites. And disparities in other violent-crime rates are just as startling. In New York City, one of the nation’s safest large cities, 83 percent of all gun assailants were black during the first six months of 2008, according to victims and witnesses, though blacks make up only 24 percent of the city’s population. Add Hispanic perps, and you account for 98 percent of all shootings in New York City. The face of violent crime in cities is almost exclusively black or brown. That explains why someone might feel a sense of trepidation when approached by a group of black youths. That’s not racism; it’s the reality of crime. And it’s that reality that determines whom the police stop, frisk, and arrest.

Is it racist to ask why a man is investigated by the Secret Service for a bumper sticker? Is it racist to ask why responsible people should pay for those who are not? Is it racist to ask elected officials to protect our borders? Is it racist to try and preserve the system of government that made us great for all these years?

I saw these quotes in High School in 1977. After the war, Lincoln also set aside $500,000 (a Lordly sum in those day’s where $20.00 was a nearly an ounce of Gold) to pay ship passage to ship Blacks back to Africa. Then he was assassinated.

Clyburn has strong ties to the NAACP which is a major contributor to getting him elected time after time. It may be time for him to go, actually past time for him to go. He was a major player in getting the confederate flag moved from the capital building and backed the boycott of blacks vacationing in south carolina until they got what they wanted. He intentionally attempted to hurt the economy of the state to promote his black policies. send him all the hate email you wish, he deserves all of it.

workingforpigs on February 20, 2009 at 2:02 PM

The seeds of racist division are being sewn in the Housing bill proposed by Obama. Look at how the bill is being portrayed to Hispanics. Whites don’t have to be told that opposing the bill is racist when Hispanics and other minorities are told that it is. Even though mainstream America may realize how ridiculous the idea is, Hispanic communities will adopt that position and become reliable Democrat voters.

JohnJ on February 20, 2009 at 2:09 PM

The race card is pretty much all Clyburn has. He is a buffoon who has no place in Congress at all. His seat was gerrymandered after the 1990 in a deal between the SC GOP and black Democrats in the legislature to create a “safe minority” seat (while simultaneously making 4 GOP seats safer, too). That left the state’s delegation split 4-2, but the GOP was confident that moderate Democrat John Spratt would leave Congress in a term or two, leaving his mostly conservative district for the picking (big mistake; he’s still there).
`
The district follows I-95, picking up black-majority communities from Dillon near the NC border all the way down to Georgia. No way Clyburn can ever lose, even if he gets caught on tape taking a bribe like William Jefferson.
`
So we in the Palmetto state have become used to his ignorant statements, and no one takes him too seriously. He lives only to deliver federal pork to his district and good jobs for his family members and friends. His personal net worth has also climbed considerably – remarkably so given the congressional salary.
`
He’s really not worth getting upset over. Stupid people say stupid things, and Clyburn’s as dumb as any in DC except perhaps Patty Murray.

…I wasn’t paying too much attention during the whole debate over this so-called stimulus package. Was it being sold as a “black bailout” or something? Does this…a’hem…legislator somehow think that the federal government should naturally spend itself into penury to benefit his racial constituency?

…more to the point, what do you call someone who anchors all his logic in race? Raaaaaaaaaacist, perhaps?

…for all those of you who’ve bought that week-old halibut about “black people can’t be racist”, take a long, hard look at this guy. He fits the bill….

Rage and revenge. Jeremiah Wright lived a fat and happy life feeding his congregation a steady diet of rage and revenge. Barack Obama IS Jeremiah Wright and his ENTIRE administration is obsessed with nothing but rage and revenge. It is palpable.

Alright I had a bit of a brat attack but I really can’t stay away from Hot Air…12 step program anyone?

So Clyburn…yeah buddy…I’m not with you on this one. Just replace “black people” with “working class” or “poor” or “recently unemployed” people and not only do you avoid stupid race baiting…but you’re actually right. More than just black people will benefit from this. Stupid.

Clyburn: Opposing the stimulus is racist or something

This clown of a congressman would best serve his state, by worrying about his state. BTW clownster, like it or not, the people of the United States gave every right to question, and/or oppose anything that’s passed as law in Washington.

One other thing idiot, get rid of the hyphenation BS. Because, I can’t seem to find it anywhere in the U.S. Constitution that you swore to uphold.

B Hussein O & Co are stoking the dying embers of racism and trying to reignite it.

Thats because Clyburn wants the money to go to the blacks.

We need another Tea Part to bring back States Rights over the federal Govt.

Isn’t it ironic? Pelosi and Reid control the future of all 50 states but we can’t fire them?

Rick007 on February 21, 2009 at 9:39 AM

Someone should ask Clyburn if opposition to the Stimulus Bill was so racist, then why didn’t he stay and vote for it.

The story is that, though he is the Whip, he actually left the floor (to attend his daughter’s wedding) and never voted for the final package when it passed the House.
