Video: The disgraceful yet hypnotic Alabama high school basketbrawl
posted at 9:32 pm on February 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
I’m momentarily burned out on politics so you have to suffer with me. Players, fans, kids, adults, men, women, on the court, and in the stands: Everyone’s in on the action in this one. Probably the most insane melee I’ve ever seen at a sporting event — but then, I’m not a fan of English soccer. Eleven people have already been arrested on charges from assault to inciting a riot; trust me when I tell you that when you’re done watching, your only question will be, “Only 11?” Exit question: What’s the precise opposite of this clip in terms of sportsmanship? Exit answer: This.

Who won the game?

That is absolutely pathetic. No one has any goddamn self control anymore…pathetic.

He was in the melee on the floor, too. I hope he’s one of the 11; he certainly looked like he was going out of his way to fight wherever he could.

The grieving player/missed free throw story is the perfect antidote for the disgust you will feel after watching the brawl.

It’s not their fault. Society did that to them. You all should be ashamed of yourselves for judging them.
They’re only acting out against the redistributive injustice done to them by all the hateful opponents of Change.

Win at all costs!
I wonder, actually, if this sort of thing will occur more frequently in the future. I’ve heard that the incidence of steroid use in the last 5 years has been increasing in HS.

Also, I’m from Alabama and that’s pretty much awesome. I love the many, many embarrassing stories to come from my state.

If you guys need a minority to take the first real shot I will.
They’re acting like animals. The “chest thumping look how big and bad i am” kind. There’s no excuse whatsoever for that sort of degenerate behavior from THAT MANY PEOPLE.
Sure people fight, and many times they’re entitled to do so…but its like 1/2 the guys in that gym have no self control whatsoever…its absolutely amazing they dressed themselves and can attend school for days at a time.

Yeah, it’s a great story, I like this bit: “That letter became a big deal in DeKalb,” Rohlman said in the paper. “We got lots of positive calls and e-mails because of it. Even though we lost the game, it was a true life lesson, and it’s not one our kids are going to forget anytime soon.”
Spirit of 1776 on February 18, 2009 at 9:58 PM
If the teams have a rematch this season or play again next year, they probably need to do it in one of those aesthetically ugly/strategically secure gyms that parks the fans one floor above the court with only a limited number of ways to get down to court level.

DethMetalCookieMonst on February 18, 2009 at 10:07 PM
We just had a brawl in our High School. Apparently it was black on black,,, some kind of gang thing or something. the whole school went into lock down. There had been fighting throughout the school the whole morning and then police came and several students attacked police. We had only received a recorded message from the school that “due to altercations, school would be dismissed early and you could pick up your students with proper ID.” No other info and the rumors were flying.

I want to throw in some links about the importance of fathers in teaching young men to be men and not brutes.
This is a really long article, but worth your while to read: The Black Family: 40 Years of Lies. It states that 70 percent of black children are born to single mothers. The writer goes back to the days of LBJ and a report done by Daniel Patrick Moynihan and outlines some history of the last 40 years.
Here’s an interview, Dad in the City: The importance of urban fatherhood in which Wilcox states,
Finally, a website called National Fatherhood Initiative. This is their research page.

I did see several black officers do the best they could being severely outnumbered and come out with several guys in handcuffs. Christ I hope no one took thier young kids to the game.

Liberals live in denial of truth because truth hurts.
It isn’t the black color of skin, or any color of skin, that makes someone violent, it’s thugishness. Thugishness is just disproportionately representied by certain people. And no, it’s not because of The Man holding anyone else down.

It’s a little too late for a kiddie timeout to have any effect on those guys.
My son has both dad and mom in the home and we did our best to make sure he had love, discipline and training at an early age. He’s now a great young man.
I wanted to mention those links above because I feel so strongly about how important fathers are to their sons.

I will go out on a limb and say something controversial. I believe the negative influences from some forms of rap or hip-hop coupled with not having a father figure is responsible for what we just saw. It is not so much racial as it is cultural. Garbage in, garbage out.

I agree it is culture. But the most powerful culture is family culture. If culture is hollow to them, and family alien, they will turn to their peers, and to their worst instincts.
It’s a failure of society, it’s true! But a large part of that society is the family.
Dr. Manhattan on February 18, 2009 at 11:08 PM
Have you been away? I couldn’t watch the brawl but I loved the story that was up on Headlines earlier. That’s the world I wish we could give to all the kids in the U.S.

My nephews would be on punishment until age 65.
baldilocks on February 18, 2009 at 11:09 PM
For what it’s worth we might try writing advertisers and television shows and ask them to stop portraying men in general and fathers specifically as ignorant dolts. Men are under valued in our country.
Cindy Munford on February 18, 2009 at 11:11 PM
Today or do you mean intellectually absent? :D
Absolutely.
Spirit of 1776 on February 18, 2009 at 11:11 PM
There is nothing sacred anymore. Nothing to aspire to, for these kids. They don’t think themselves capable of the very things it would take for them to truly respect themselves as members of society. And these mental chains come from all around honestly I pity them. Everyone in that brawl is capable of greatness. The allegory of the cave comes to mind.
Dr. Manhattan on February 18, 2009 at 11:12 PM
“the region revealed through sight — the ordinary objects we see around us — to the prison home, and the light of the fire in it to the power of the sun. And in applying the going up and the seeing of what’s above to the soul’s journey to the intelligible place, you not mistake my expectation, since you desire to hear it. A god doubtless knows if it happens to be true. At all events, this is the way the phenomena look to me: in the region of the knowable the last thing to be seen, and that with considerable effort, is the idea of good; but once seen, it must be concluded that this is indeed the cause for all things of all that is right and beautiful — in the visible realm it give birth to light and its sovereign; in the intelligible realm, itself sovereign, it provided truth and intelligence — and that the man who is going to act prudently in private or in public must see it”

Cindy Munford on February 18, 2009 at 11:18 PM
Thank you.
One will rarely see an American kid of any race who comes from a traditional family engage in such behavior. But the dearth of traditional families among black Americans can be viewed as a “Mission Accomplished” situation for the Left.
I contend that the Left set out to destroy black American families, and, therefore black people in general, back in the day (sixties).
With Obama sneaking in that welfare clause in the porkulus bill, he is merely striking the death blow. It’s a blow which will further stir up strife between races and is part of the the war against American society in its present form.
Those who would exacerbate that rift are just playing the Left’s game, being tools of the Left. Congratulations.
baldilocks on February 18, 2009 at 11:21 PM
Yeah, well I am/was burned out. Seemed like the same arguments over and over. I like to talk about stuff, but only if it stimulates thought for me and lately felt like just repeating myself, especially wrt Palin. Nice of you to notice though, I’m flattered.

underceij on February 18, 2009 at 11:27 PM
baldi, you’re welcome.
I agree with everything you said. Kids from traditional families don’t behave like that.
I was horrified to read that welfare was going to rear its head again. Either Obama doesn’t care about the impact on families or he hasn’t even thought through the consequences and he’s only concerned about building power.

I would kiss a small part of the one’s ass if he would just say “alright black folk, time to grow up, put down your animosity towards whites and QUIT FIGHTING AND KILLING EACH OTHER”. Of course if he did that then they would turn on him. Hmmm, maybe a GOP strategy in the works.
FlyoverJ-HawkFan on February 18, 2009 at 11:39 PM
Absolutely. If a family is without a father than the mother is having to earn the living on her own and raise the kids. All this, and having to compete with a musical lifestyle that drives negative self-image and attitudes into the heads of the kids. It makes it near impossible to win that fight.
You are a treasure. Always.
