Report: Hitchens beaten by pro-Syrian thugs in Beirut? Update: “I was on the ground and getting it in the head”

Look on the bright side: This’ll make for one hell of a Slate column once he gets back.
I can only assume they didn’t recognize him, as the opportunity to scalp one of the world’s foremost atheists surely would have been irresistible.
I dont know if you find this as news worthy or not, but Christopher Hitchens is currently in Beirut sponsored by the same group that owns that crap NOW Lebanon. He got in a few nights ago and surprisingly went out drinking. On his way out of the bar he saw an SSNP poster and wrote on it “Fuck the SSNP”. There just happened to be some SSNP thugs near by–most likely asking people for their ID, and most likely to no avail–and saw him write on the poster and kicked his ass. He is still walking with a limp.
Abu Muqawama says he’s confirmed the story. The SSNP is, of course, a Hezbollah ally that advocates a Syrian anschluss of Lebanon (and Israel, natch). Consider Hitch a minor martyr to the cause of the Cedar Revolution here. Exit question one: More or less unpleasant than being waterboarded? Exit question two: Er, isn’t Ace there with him? Has anyone heard from Ace recently?
Update: Belated exit question three: Is it time for me to organize a mighty atheist army and lead it on a march to Damascus for justice? Yes.
Update: Forbes says Totten was in the mix.
But later that night, three of our “scoop” brigade–Jonathan Foreman, Michael Totten and Christopher Hitchens–got involved in a street brawl with some thugs of a Syria-loving skinhead party called the SNPN after Hitchens rather gallantly insulted their swastika flag. On our way to a meeting with Minister of State Nissib Lahoud, Hitchens showed me the gashed knuckles and bruises suffered during the punch up. The attackers had apparently come out of nowhere on posh Hamda Street, where they had gone to buy shoes. “I was on the ground,” Hitchens said, “and getting it in the head.” It was a miracle they didn’t pull Kalashnikovs.
Note: I changed the headline to reflect that the attackers were pro-Syrian, but not necessarily Syrian in origin.
Update: Ace sets the record straight.

I’ve nothing against social conservatives or religious people- however they can (and here on HA sometimes do) take it too far. Some here on HA would have you believe that athiests (of which I am not) are by definition evil, and that it’s impossible to be conservative without holding the same concern for social issues or religion that they do.
There’s more to the conservative movement than religion, abortion and gay marriage- a lot more. Not everyone gets that though.
Hollowpoint on February 18, 2009 at 8:30 PM
I listed things that are happening in this world, at this moment. They’ve all been covered at this site and others.
Failure to detect sarcasm.
You want my address so you can come beat me up, internet tough guy?

So, I go and give Hitchens a thumbs up for standing up to the neo-fascist thugs and think nothing more of it. Then I find out that there is SUPPORT for the people who BEAT HIM UP.
What the hell is going on here? I like Hitchens because he gets in your face and says what he thinks is right. Here, he unequivocally did something that is right and worthy of praise and far too many disapprove.
To say this is unfortunate is an understatement.

They seem to prefer a heavily moderated and policed site to a more open commenting format such as the one here at HotAir.
I (often) disagree with things that AP, Ed and posters here say and I’m sure they disagree with me at times as well (if they even deign to notice me). One of the things I like best about HotAir is that people only get banned for truly atrocious comments and not for having a different opinion from the host. It has allowed HA to have extremely diverse (on the Conservative side of the political sphere) discussions and I think the site is richer for it. Additionally, it reflects well on Allah and Ed that they do not ban people that annoy (and even insult them).
I’m happy there is such diversity available on the blogosphere that those that prefer to have the conversation limited and policed can go to LGF and those that prefer to have it open (even if that means it takes turns you’d rather it didn’t) can come here to HA.

Sorry, I’m for free expression unless it provokes/prompts immediate violence.
Let’s not forget slogans like, “Give me Liberty, or give me death.” Walkin’ around in 1780-Britain with something like that would probably get your head knocked off.
That would be why so many here died (apparently wasted lives since Liberty is now dead), so that there would be opportunity to assuage others to a belief system, good or bad.
Does nazism suck? Yeah. Is it evil? Certainly. Should it be confronted? Definitely.
But don’t whine-bag about someone defending the means of their expression, anymore than you would for someone burning Hitchen’s books.

But the people you’re talking about are a minority of a much larger set. And a lot of social cons are getting a little tired of being blamed for the current mess that Republicans and conservatives are in:

If they succeed in establishing religion as a basic Republican Party tenet, they could do us in. When you say ‘radical right’ today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye.
Well, I’ve spent quite a number of years carrying the flag of the ‘Old Conservatism.’ And I can say with conviction that the religious issues of these groups have little or nothing to do with conservative or liberal politics. The uncompromising position of these groups is a divisive element that could tear apart the very spirit of our representative system, if they gain sufficient strength. Being a conservative in America traditionally has meant that one holds a deep, abiding respect for the Constitution. We conservatives believe sincerely in the integrity of the Constitution. We treasure the freedoms that document protects. By maintaining the separation of church and state, the United States has avoided the intolerance which has so divided the rest of the world with religious wars. Can any of us refute the wisdom of Madison and the other framers? Can anyone look at the carnage in Iran, the bloodshed in northern Ireland, or the bombs bursting in Lebanon and yet question the dangers of injecting religious issues into the affairs of state?
The religious factions will go on imposing their will on others, less the decent people connected to them recognize that religion has no place in public policy. They must learn to make their views known without trying to make their views the only alternatives. We have succeeded for over 200 years in keeping the affairs of state separate from the uncompromising idealism of religious groups and we mustn’t stop now. To retreat from that separation would violate the principles of conservatism and the values upon which the framers built this democratic republic.

Esthier on February 18, 2009 at 9:00 PM
No apology necessary- I knew where you were coming from.
I also disagree with some of the chattering class, Beltway Republicans who believe that moving to the left on social issues, the environment, etc is the best way forward. Generally, the Republicans who tend to squish on social issues also go squishy on others as well. In addition, social conservatives make up a large, politically active part of the party and can’t be ignored.
Like I said, social and religious conservatives definitely have a place in the Republican party and conservative movement, but the subset of obnoxious, intolerant and sometimes hateful “conseratives” who believe that specific social issues and (their) religion exclusively define conservativism I can do without.
As it relates to this thread, athiests have just as much a right to a seat at the conservative table as anyone else. Hitch isn’t a conservative, and I often disagree with him, but he does get it right from time to time. Certainly he doesn’t deserve the hateful comments here on HA by those who seem to side with the facist thugs who beat him up.

Hitchens is a socialist.
Libertarian Joseph on February 18, 2009 at 10:45 PM
Things I’ve learned from the last few thousand comments:
1) Hitchens wasn’t drunk at the time, which means he was hung over.
2) If he’d done that to a Nazi poster in the ’20s, I wouldn’t have had the same reaction because I wasn’t born yet and there was no Internet.
3) Saying that Hitchens was dumb to do that in public, and shouldn’t have been surprised when it turned out badly, is apparently the same thing as growing a silly mustache and screaming about annexing the Sudetenland.
4) You do not want to mess with an IT consultant.

Well, how else do they maintain their fanaticism?
sethstorm on February 19, 2009 at 12:35 AM
Speaking for myself, I know that Hitchens is motivated by the same destructive impulses as his fellow liberals who are making life unbearable in the US. I’ve had bumper stickers vandalized, and I would have loved to have kicked the snot out of the person who did it, if I caught him.
It’s very easy to forget for a moment that all parties involved were lowlifes and just savor watching a deserving character get some comeupance after acting on his liberal impulses. It doesn’t happen the US enough.
Buddahpundit on February 19, 2009 at 12:54 AM
Desecrating a poster with a modified swastika for a party that works with terrorists is a “liberal impulse”?
What planet are you living on?
MadisonConservative on February 19, 2009 at 1:08 AM
The thing he vandalized is besides the point I was making. Hitchens types can justify all of their vulgar behavior. Fred Phelps might eventually get smacked around a little while protesting something I have no sympathy for, but he will still have had it coming.
Buddahpundit on February 19, 2009 at 1:38 AM
You’re being intentionally obtuse if you cannot distinguish between a man with a cultish little church, protesting military funerals with signs that say “Thank God for 9/11″ and “God Hates Fags”…and a guy who wrote “F you” on a poster advocating terrorism through the use of the resurrected nazi emblem.
The fact that you even made that comparison, when the Phelps family and that political party have a good deal of ideas in common, is astonishing.
MadisonConservative on February 19, 2009 at 1:44 AM
Interesting that you’d use the word “obtuse”. Phelps is a leftist pretending to be a Christian for the purpose of smearing Christianity, but even that is irrelevant to the point I made that I wouldn’t have any sympathy for Phelps no matter who Phelps was protesting when he gets his comeupance.
