Report: Hitchens beaten by pro-Syrian thugs in Beirut? Update: “I was on the ground and getting it in the head”

posted at 4:54 pm on February 18, 2009 by Allahpundit

Look on the bright side: This’ll make for one hell of a Slate column once he gets back.

I can only assume they didn’t recognize him, as the opportunity to scalp one of the world’s foremost atheists surely would have been irresistible.

I dont know if you find this as news worthy or not, but Christopher Hitchens is currently in Beirut sponsored by the same group that owns that crap NOW Lebanon. He got in a few nights ago and surprisingly went out drinking. On his way out of the bar he saw an SSNP poster and wrote on it “Fuck the SSNP”. There just happened to be some SSNP thugs near by–most likely asking people for their ID, and most likely to no avail–and saw him write on the poster and kicked his ass. He is still walking with a limp.

Abu Muqawama says he’s confirmed the story. The SSNP is, of course, a Hezbollah ally that advocates a Syrian anschluss of Lebanon (and Israel, natch). Consider Hitch a minor martyr to the cause of the Cedar Revolution here. Exit question one: More or less unpleasant than being waterboarded? Exit question two: Er, isn’t Ace there with him? Has anyone heard from Ace recently?

Update: Belated exit question three: Is it time for me to organize a mighty atheist army and lead it on a march to Damascus for justice? Yes.

Update: Forbes says Totten was in the mix.

But later that night, three of our “scoop” brigade–Jonathan Foreman, Michael Totten and Christopher Hitchens–got involved in a street brawl with some thugs of a Syria-loving skinhead party called the SNPN after Hitchens rather gallantly insulted their swastika flag. On our way to a meeting with Minister of State Nissib Lahoud, Hitchens showed me the gashed knuckles and bruises suffered during the punch up. The attackers had apparently come out of nowhere on posh Hamda Street, where they had gone to buy shoes. “I was on the ground,” Hitchens said, “and getting it in the head.” It was a miracle they didn’t pull Kalashnikovs.

Note: I changed the headline to reflect that the attackers were pro-Syrian, but not necessarily Syrian in origin.

Update: Ace sets the record straight.

Here’s a thought – some Obamaite displays a Lenin-like picture. You, or I, walk over and scribble “foxtrott yankee” on it – should we be beaten up?

Yes and then imprisoned for life. That’s the way I do things anyway and I can see that my way of doing things is not without support here.

Allahpundit on February 18, 2009 at 6:17 PM

Seems like that question should be directed to Pelosi, Reid, BO, Holder, Geitner and the rest of our “leadership”.

I mean, what did he think was going to happen? What were those guys going to do? “Oh, it’s just Hitchens. Don’t mind him, he’s always like this. You should see him on Bill Maher!”

Jim Treacher on February 18, 2009 at 6:00 PM

Yes, it was reckless and the result was predictable, but standing up to fascists has its benefits. At this point I think the question to ask Hitch is: Would he do it again?

Buy Danish on February 18, 2009 at 6:23 PM

Allah, think of the thugs as wild animals.

No, that’s what the left does to excuse them morally for brutality.

Allahpundit on February 18, 2009 at 6:23 PM

Or even better, pick the rules we know and understand, not the ones outsiders barf at us. “Judge not lest ye be judged” is an admonition against hypocrisy, not all judgment.

Yes, I was unable to ever read the Bible (multiple times) because the library insisted on putting it on the highest shelf. Einstein.

I changed the headline to reflect that the attackers were pro-Syrian, but not necessarily Syrian in origin.

So you change a headline to clarify that Syrians are not directly blamed for beating up Hitchens but do nothing about a misleading Palin headline. Real nice.

Mark1971 on February 18, 2009 at 6:25 PM

Plenty were. The more rational posters said it was a stupid choice to make. The rest simply giggled in glee because they hate his stance on religion. The latter is appalling.

MadisonConservative on February 18, 2009 at 5:50 PM

The latter is your own fabrication.

Darth Executor on February 18, 2009 at 5:55 PM

Darth, it’s no use.

Moral indignation, fence sitting and a feeling of victim-born entitlement (oh my the religious zealots are suppressing me online!) characterizes all those from the Left. These things also characterize Atheists (or whatever the current in-vogue name they grant themselves today happens to be).

Take AP for example; a fence sitter who never takes a stance on anything, yet sneers at everything. A Monday morning quarterback. He is the equivalent of a President who, during his time in the Legislature, voted PRESENT on all important matters.

Not very impressive.

Gibbon speaks of this kind of person in the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (Page 37 in the modern library version):

“A cloud of critics, of compilers, of commentators, darkened the face of learning, and the decline of genius was soon followed by the corruption of taste.”

Allahpundit on February 18, 2009 at 6:23 PM

But you are missing my point, it is not about excusing them. I am not in favor of what they did. My point is that Hitch was not without culpability in this. He made a provocative move and paid for it. I used the wild animals scenario to focus on the fact that Hitchens should have known better.

carbon_footprint on February 18, 2009 at 6:29 PM

What happened to the thugs’ “personal responsibility” not to start a brawl?

Allahpundit on February 18, 2009 at 6:17 PM

The word ‘thugs’ gave it a higher probability that a brawl might ensue. Let’s not make the mistake of applying rational thought to irrational players. That mistake cost Hitchens an undeserved (although provoked) whoopin.

It is possible to not condone both parties’ behavior…even for wholly seperate reasons.

LOL. There was a sad story in the news several months ago about an early-20′s, liberal white girl who was hitch-hiking around the nation on some sort of “spread the liberal sweetness and light” campaign. She wound up getting murdered while riding a bike through the worst neighborhood in New Orleans in the middle of the night.

The lowlife who killed her deserves to get a cyanide injection but no one with a molecule of discerning judgment could be surprised by what happened to her.

Similar principle here. I love Hitch and detest the criminal scum who beat him up but, jeebus, is anybody really surprised by the narrative here? Get drunk, trash thugs’ sign, get whumped. Not exactly a shocker.

That is the exact same reasoning used by college liberals when they deface college republican posters, newspapers and offices. The same reasoning used by people who deface Nativity scenes. The same reasoning used by people who deface or steal candidate signs (McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden) ones.

Are you suggesting selective application of law, here in America? If so, who decides what is worthy of defacement? A better course of action is via the ballot box or better education. Taking a STAND openly doesn’t require vandalism.

Now, if such a flag as the one you linked to above is carried by someone killing or assaulting others? Then I would recommend a defacement alright, and not just of the flag.

You got me! I am Nancy Pelosi. How did you find me out? I’ll check back later for your answer, I am late for my weekly face lift.

Do you have the moral clarity to see the difference?

If a foreign thug comes to my home and sprays F USA on my flag, he’ll get a first-class beatdown.

Spirit of 1776 on February 18, 2009 at 7:01 PM

Damn right. Further, if I caught someone removing a political sign in my yard that they don’t agree with, they just might get the beatdown as well. (unless it’s a kid or old lady).

You should be banned for that.

I concur. I may ban myself while leaving the door open for rapprochement at a later date (probably after dinner).

Django on February 18, 2009 at 7:06 PM

Well, after being a commenter and poster at Little Green Footballs for about 7 – 8 years with no problems at all, agreeing with about everything Charles Johnson said, I just got banned and had my comments deleted because I complained about his characterization of comments on this thread. Unbelievable.

Django on February 18, 2009 at 6:04 PM

Given your posts here, you no doubt deserved the ban. Another LGF commenter who “complained about his characterization of comments on this thread” wasn’t banned; you’re obviously not telling us the whole story.

I looked it up, and Montana’s family homesteaded in 1892…so looks like you are the newcomer…

That is the exact same reasoning used by college liberals when they deface college republican posters, newspapers and offices. The same reasoning used by people who deface Nativity scenes. The same reasoning used by people who deface or steal candidate signs (McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden) ones.

Montana on February 18, 2009 at 7:00 PM

No, it isn’t. A poster or nativity scene or campaign sign is an expression of speech. Freedom of speech is a basic individual right. We agree thus far.

Where you are wrong is in believing that the SSNP has a right to their own opinion. It is the goal of their organization to deprive millions of individuals of their rights. Any individual or group which seeks to deprive others of their rights, can make no claim to rights of their own.

Hitchens’ activity, defacing the political speech of a gang of thugs, is no different than depriving a murderer of his liberty by imprisoning him–by depriving another man of his right to life, the murderer forfeits his right to liberty. Hitchens’ action was a defense of the rights of individuals, not an offense against them.

AP, I’m struck by how much I both love and hate what you have to say.

That said, God bless Christopher Hitchens. His is a worldview that eats at the bones, but by God his hands make a mighty work at times.

In this work, Godspeed and quick mending, Mr. Hitchens. I hope that you can get back to work soon in the fight against the true evil of this world.

spmat on February 18, 2009 at 7:11 PM

If that sign were a socialist symbol, I’d be happy to come over, mutilate it, and argue with you why.

This is America, where your actions are protected by law.

When not in America, it is advisable to have your actions protected by force.

Your own comments vis a vis bodyguards make this point. Hitch did something risky and he paid for it physically. Was it worth it? Well, that’s for him to reveal.

Spirit of 1776 on February 18, 2009 at 7:11 PM

I should care what a God-denialist considers to be acceptable discourse? While they range from indifferent to supportive of homosexuality and infanticide?

I want them to know they’re despised, just as I’d want a rapist or child molester to know he is despised.

Is this a conservative site or not?

not quite. here’s the difference. treating actual nazis as actual nazis is treating them according to who they are. treating college republicans as nazis is a godwins law violation.

let’s not bend over backwards to defend nazis’ “right” to violent indignation.

and can we aggree, now that the election’s over, that the mutual vandalism of yard signs is not serious business? it’s as grave an act as tping the bushes on halloween.

hicsuget on February 18, 2009 at 7:09 PM

I see your point and I am not unsympathetic to it, but I still worry that selective allowance of defacement (vandalism) would undermine key rights in America.

I have no idea what is allowable or “legal” in the place where Hitchens was, but to allow or to encourage similar vandalism here, in the US–even in the case of a poster announcing a Nazi Youth meeting in, say, Baltimore–represents a significant undermining of key rights in our society.

I did not say the SSNP has or does not have a right to their own opinion. In general, my belief is yes, we ALL have a right to our own opinions. Believing that you can vandalize the written opinion of others and that to NOT do is a shameful thing? Well, how far behind is State sanctioned censorship?

Maybe we could call such a thing, a Fairness Doctrine.

Montana on February 18, 2009 at 7:16 PM

Take AP for example; a fence sitter who never takes a stance on anything, yet sneers at everything. A Monday morning quarterback. He is the equivalent of a President who, during his time in the Legislature, voted PRESENT on all important matters.

Montana on February 18, 2009 at 6:25 PM

Oh yeah, if someone doesn’t take a firm stance on every issue in lockstep with Christian Conservatives, they are certainly fence-sitters. Using logic and really thinking out matters, and possibly coming to a stance where you’re not 100% one way or another evidently should be discouraged to the highest degree. This is America, dammit! You’re not allowed to have any opinions unless they’re hardcore!

And if you have any opinions that aren’t, you’re Obama. Hooray.
