Report: Hitchens beaten by pro-Syrian thugs in Beirut? Update: “I was on the ground and getting it in the head”

posted at 4:54 pm on February 18, 2009 by Allahpundit

Look on the bright side: This’ll make for one hell of a Slate column once he gets back.

I can only assume they didn’t recognize him, as the opportunity to scalp one of the world’s foremost atheists surely would have been irresistible.

I dont know if you find this as news worthy or not, but Christopher Hitchens is currently in Beirut sponsored by the same group that owns that crap NOW Lebanon. He got in a few nights ago and surprisingly went out drinking. On his way out of the bar he saw an SSNP poster and wrote on it “Fuck the SSNP”. There just happened to be some SSNP thugs near by–most likely asking people for their ID, and most likely to no avail–and saw him write on the poster and kicked his ass. He is still walking with a limp.

Abu Muqawama says he’s confirmed the story. The SSNP is, of course, a Hezbollah ally that advocates a Syrian anschluss of Lebanon (and Israel, natch). Consider Hitch a minor martyr to the cause of the Cedar Revolution here. Exit question one: More or less unpleasant than being waterboarded? Exit question two: Er, isn’t Ace there with him? Has anyone heard from Ace recently?

Update: Belated exit question three: Is it time for me to organize a mighty atheist army and lead it on a march to Damascus for justice? Yes.

Update: Forbes says Totten was in the mix.

But later that night, three of our “scoop” brigade–Jonathan Foreman, Michael Totten and Christopher Hitchens–got involved in a street brawl with some thugs of a Syria-loving skinhead party called the SNPN after Hitchens rather gallantly insulted their swastika flag. On our way to a meeting with Minister of State Nissib Lahoud, Hitchens showed me the gashed knuckles and bruises suffered during the punch up. The attackers had apparently come out of nowhere on posh Hamda Street, where they had gone to buy shoes. “I was on the ground,” Hitchens said, “and getting it in the head.” It was a miracle they didn’t pull Kalashnikovs.

Note: I changed the headline to reflect that the attackers were pro-Syrian, but not necessarily Syrian in origin.

Update: Ace sets the record straight.

Blowback

For once, the people who are supposedly not religious (but strangely fixated on religion) started it.
Y-not on February 18, 2009 at 5:43 PM

Yep.

As for vandalism, to go a bit off topic, maybe it would be better if vandals did get beat up every once in a while here too; the current methods don’t seem to be doing much to stop it.

Bishop on February 18, 2009 at 5:52 PM

Can we remove religion completely out of the picture and simply take a little pleasure in seeing a jerkwad get his butt kicked?

Bishop on February 18, 2009 at 5:26 PM

That’s DRUNK, GODLESS jerkwad to you.

seejanemom on February 18, 2009 at 5:52 PM

I have to agree with Entelechy. I don’t agree with a lot of things Hitch says but I’d never wish that sort of violence on anyone. It’s the sort of gloat lefties love so much.

I’m betting he comes back and writes about how stupid he was, how he deserved what he got, and how lucky he was to come home alive. Just a guess.

orville on February 18, 2009 at 5:52 PM

He should have never got his bung waxed.

When Israel strikes back at Hamas or Hezbollah, the Muslims all complain about the lack of parity.

Yet when Hitchens scribbles on a stupid poster, it’s okay to beat the crap out of him.

Disturb the Universe on February 18, 2009 at 5:53 PM

he saw an SSNP poster and wrote on it “F*** the SSNP”.

I’m totally with Hitchens here, but add some editorial dashes! (Though you’re right to call them bastards.)

Tzetzes on February 18, 2009 at 5:53 PM

Entelechy on February 18, 2009 at 5:51 PM

Well, I think everyone would agree he is very lucky to actually be limping around today.

Hopefully, he won’t feel compelled to repeat this particular activity in other Lebanese stops, assuming he’s even allowed to stay.

wccawa on February 18, 2009 at 5:53 PM

Since nobody else will say it, I will: The thugs shouldn’t have beaten the drunken man for publicly disrespecting them on their own turf. It was a bad thing they did.

Jim Treacher on February 18, 2009 at 5:45 PM

Yep. What’s with people who beat up a drunk with a pen and a foul mouth?

Heck, a drug addict peed right in front of me on a fine summer afternoon while I was walking my dogs. I just said, “Eeeeewwww…..” and kept on walking. But I’m just a Southern gal. I should have beat the tar outta him!! Why didn’t I think of that?! lol

Cody1991 on February 18, 2009 at 5:53 PM

Hitchens got his ass kicked for committing vandalism.

You say vandalism, I say poster improvement art.

Not quite the same as some chick in skimpy clothes getting raped without instigating it.

Darth Executor on February 18, 2009 at 5:40 PM

Without instigating it? Without “some chick getting rapped without instigating it”? What? Your mask has slipped. You should be more careful.

MB4 on February 18, 2009 at 5:53 PM

Mr. Madison, I know you. You are smarter than this, and you are just being willfully silly.

Have you ever been outside the United States? You must know that what we can do here is much different that what you can do in other countries. You have to know that.

Skandia Recluse on February 18, 2009 at 5:49 PM

So you really think his scrawling a slur on a poster was justification for him to get his ass handed to him? Risky? Yes it was, as most political statements in the Middle East are. He should have been charged with vandalism. However, when it’s a bunch of goons with a beef about America expressing their opinion “the way they do”, I find myself sympathizing with Hitch.

MadisonConservative on February 18, 2009 at 5:53 PM

This only endears him to me all the more.

TheSitRep on February 18, 2009 at 5:53 PM

Well, being someone who has lived in a foreign country, it’s not a good idea to start trouble with the locals lest you be considered an ugly American. But kina funny just the same. Afternoon HA. Longtime reader first time poster. Waiting to be the FNG a lobg time.

As Ahnold once said, you should never drink and bake, perhaps drinking and vandalism don’t go well together either.

Godless…I couldn’t care less.

RightOFLeft on February 18, 2009 at 5:55 PM

This is interesting about the ground thing, and religion, because there was another case I read about in Lebanon where someone was being beat up on the ground and in the head, by religious people: maronite catholics were committing the violence, in fact.

It was probably more like:

**** *** ******** *** ** ******** **** **** *******!

I can’t stand Hitchens, but I hope he heals up real good and gives Allah a kickin column.

My brother did something like that in Guymas, MX once years ago. He decided to try to educate the local Communists having a beach rally. He looped around the town with the reds chasing him and of course they couldn’t catch him cause he was young and was a cross-country athlete in high school. After a loop he pulls into a bar and was real quiet after that and then snuck back to Hermosillo.

Poor Hitchens is too old to be doing stuff like that.

And, NO, this wasn’t his “Road to Damascus” moment.

Sapwolf on February 18, 2009 at 5:57 PM

So you really think his scrawling a slur on a poster was justification for him to get his ass handed to him?

This thread is funny in so many ways. The flagrant hypocrisy in the comments has me laughing so hard I’m in tears. Some of you really need to pick a side. I hope Hitchens and his posse didn’t suffer any lasting harm.

Madison, you (and others, like Entelechy) made the leap and assumed a poster who thought he deserved it felt that way because of his religious views, but I can’t find why you made that assumption. Perhaps you can show us why/where.

I agree with you, Hitchens doesn’t pull punches when it comes to fascist Islam and that is the ONE thing I like about him and wish there were more people willing to speak out regarding the evils of fascist Islam.

However my point in my post pertains to the fact it’s easy to have stones and be a bad-azz when you’re drunk, but the danger in doing so is many people end up getting themselves in above their head, which is what happened to Hitchens.

Again, I hope both he and ACE are ok.

MB4 on February 18, 2009 at 5:53 PM

From past experience I already know you’re a major league retard so I’ll try to outline it for you carefully:

Girl in skimpy clothes walking down the street gets raped = hitchens walking down the street and gets the tar beaten out of him.

But that’s not what happened.

Hitchens vandalizes poster of renowned thugs and thugs beat the crap out of him = girl in skimpy clothes walking by a rapist, telling him he’s ugly and he could never have her.

The girl in the first example is a bit dull but completely innocent. The girl in the second example is a major league dumbass and not completely innocent.

The second girl doesn’t deserve to get raped for what she said anymore than Hitchens deserves to have the crap beaten out of him for what he did, but everybody would agree they’re both morons looking for trouble who found it. Clear now?

Well that’s really disappointing. I usually like LGF.

It’s disappointing that Charles Johnson did not (apparently) take the time to read the thread. In his defense, there has been more than the usual “spin” by the combatants on this thread. I still cannot find what prompted the assumption by a couple of posters that the reason others think Hitchens “deserved it” (in the loosest sense, ie: that it was predictable his behavior would lead to a beating) was because he’s an atheist.

Oh well.

Y-not on February 18, 2009 at 6:09 PM

As conservatives, aren’t we all for personal responsibility? He was in a foreign country, drunk and acting antagonistically. His actions were questionable. Spirit of 1776 on February 18, 2009 at 6:12 PM

Here’s a thought – some Obamaite displays a Lenin-like picture. You, or I, walk over and scribble “foxtrott yankee” on it – should we be beaten up?
Entelechy on February 18, 2009 at 5:47 PM

A better question to ask is if you or I got drunk, defaced a poster in a section of a foreign city known to harbor supporters of whatever is on the poster and then got knocked-around for our trouble, should be we have tried to be wiser about our conduct?

Congratulations! I, too, was once banned from his site. But its because I criticized his calling Bobby Jindal “pro-exorcism.” Believe me, you’ll get over it. I stopped reading the site well before I realized I was even banned. I was done after that smear-job.

jimmy the notable on February 18, 2009 at 6:13 PM

That’s called Stockholm Syndrome.

Tanya on February 18, 2009 at 5:59 PM

Assuming the people holding you are religious I suppose. Otherwise it’s just fear of the unknown, nothing to very special.

I find myself sympathizing with Hitch.

MadisonConservative on February 18, 2009 at 5:53 PM

Rational people do (though you know better than to expect that here), though as a Christian who doesn’t always appreciate his rants against my ilk, I’m not bothered by his waterboarding experience and wouldn’t worry if his mouth had gotten him into a fair fight.

Esthier on February 18, 2009 at 6:13 PM

As conservatives, aren’t we all for personal responsibility? He was in a foreign country, drunk and acting antagonistically. His actions were questionable. The reactions from the pro-Syrian people were questionable. I am not happy that Hitchens got his butt whooped, but I clearly understand that what he did was provocative and he took the risk of the fall out when he did it.

carbon_footprint on February 18, 2009 at 6:10 PM

Exactly, but you could take this one step further. Don’t be stupid Hitch you are not on friendly soil. Not that I necessarily disagree with what he did.

Thanks, mang. :-) I know he’s been a lightning rod for a lot of left-wing (and even right-wing) psychotics. I hope he doesn’t turn into a paranoid nut. He’s done some great work and is basically one of the good guys.

Django on February 18, 2009 at 6:16 PM

I think the Crips and the Bloods should cut it out already. I’m gonna go get bombed and tell ‘em that myself.

Jim Treacher on February 18, 2009 at 6:16 PM

HaHa! Shoulda had his Messiah reason with them.

I usually skip these threads, but I’m in a bad mood today.

Tanya on February 18, 2009 at 6:09 PM

Sometimes threads like these are just what you need. Allah’s complements can’t hurt either.

Esthier on February 18, 2009 at 6:16 PM

That’s what you get screwing around in someone else’s backyard. I bet he’ll think twice next time.

He wrote on a poster. He didn’t spit in someone’s face. What happened to the thugs’ “personal responsibility” not to start a brawl?

Allahpundit on February 18, 2009 at 6:17 PM

I only wish I could see threads like this when it is earlier so I can get my posts and milk it for all I can.

But it is after midnight here in Switzerland and time to sleep.

Oh, and yes, I can detect the anti-Semitism. That poll about Europe thinking the Jews are behind the economic collapse. There is some truth there gang. I can get it from talking stuff with the guys I’m working with here. Interesting. And yes, they do think the USA is some rightwing freekdom. They get their news from CNN on the USA I guess. Oh, and this is NOT Palin country people. To them, she is the American Taliban. So of course I got the biggest most beautiful pic of Sarah on my laptop computer desktop with the Cuda slideshow. I’ll be fired by next week.

Another thing, this place has NO soul. Chocolate, watches, and bankers, oh my! Few children. The birthrate here is like maybe .75 per woman it seems. Euthanasia anyone? Makes me want to hide the pillows in my hotel room.

Be thankful for our freedoms in the USA, at least while we still have them.

Hey, while I’m gone, find out if Hitch landed a few blows too. I’d hate to think he is some pacifist or something.

Ummm…. too late.

wccawa on February 18, 2009 at 6:17 PM

Although I agree with the sentiment Hitchens expressed, putting politics aside for a second, he probably did deserve an ass kicking for defacing property.

I’m sure the Hitchens commie won’t be voting for any politician for whom I might promote with bumper stickers or lawn signs, but if he vandalizes my propaganda, he will get the same treatment.

FlyoverJ-HawkFan on February 18, 2009 at 6:14 PM

Exactly. That is the point. We are not sympathizing with the bad guys here. We are just pointing out that what Hitch did came with lots of risks and consequences.

Allahpundit on February 18, 2009 at 6:17 PM

They can’t help themselves. Oh… wait, that’s the Democrat position. Sorry, I’ve got nothing.

Esthier on February 18, 2009 at 6:19 PM

Well, after being a commenter and poster at Little Green Footballs for about 7 – 8 years with no problems at all, agreeing with about everything Charles Johnson said, I just got banned and had my comments deleted because I complained about his characterization of comments on this thread. Unbelievable.

Django on February 18, 2009 at 6:04 PM

Charles Johnson was the inspiration for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” you know.

Allahpundit on February 18, 2009 at 6:17 PM

Yeah but he didn’t do it in the friendly confines. I don’t disagree with his thought process, I’m an atheist myself. You just have to be smarter than that with no friendlies around.

FlyoverJ-HawkFan on February 18, 2009 at 6:20 PM

He wrote on a poster. He didn’t spit in someone’s face.

So it would have been okay if he’d spit in their faces. How about their shoes?

What happened to the thugs’ “personal responsibility” not to start a brawl?

I was going to say I hold Hitchens to a slightly higher standard, but then I couldn’t think of a reason why.

Jim Treacher on February 18, 2009 at 6:21 PM

He wrote on a poster.

Allahpundit on February 18, 2009 at 6:17 PM

He wrote pretty much “fuck you” on a poster. The FU was directed at the people who beat the crap out of him. It’s the same symbolic gesture as spitting (minus the gross).

Darth Executor on February 18, 2009 at 6:21 PM

Allahpundit on February 18, 2009 at 6:17 PM

Allah, think of the thugs as wild animals. Hitch is responsible for his actions and self-safety. If Hitch hates lions and provokes one and gets mauled, he owns a lot of the responsibility for that. It is not a matter of my being on the side of the thugs, it is a matter of Hitch being reckless and paying for it.

They are mostly like rats running on those round toys that, with little ability to stop. Hard to be in a good mood these days, our Zeitgeist et all. Remain strong, though.

Of course we should be wiser, in many regards, not drink so much in a strange place, run around not guarded, be there at all…still doesn’t justify the commentary of the so-called Christians here.
