Video: The fake Obama coins

posted at 2:35 pm on February 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Remember when we laughed about Barack Obama’s attempt to license his image? Maybe it could have prevented a bunch of suckers from losing their money in this pathetic bait and switch swindle. People paid a hundred dollars or more for Obama coins that turned out to be stickers over regular US currency (via Caleb Howe and Redstate):

Well, all I can say is caveat emptor, baby.  In fact, that would have been good advice for those wishing to vote for Obama, too.  The complaint about “false impressions” and “hidden costs” will get more than a few chuckles out of conservatives — grim chuckles, but chuckles nonetheless.  We’ve seen quite a few of both since the inauguration, and even some Obama voters have discovered the same thing.

Blowback

Why call them “fake”?

They are very much true-to-life, in that they represent everything about Barack Obama….Not worth much, and the facade is mis-leading.

DrAllecon on February 17, 2009 at 2:43 PM

I saw the ad. The ad is not misleading. They come right out and say (and show) that they’re plastering Obama pictures over existing coins. Buyers were just not paying attention.

I don’t think this is technically fraud, wish I had thought of it. There are fake nike’s being sold from China that have Obama’s mug on them, however those are technically illegal(the Nike part).

Why prevent it? Fools deserve every time to pay, especially to be exploited. The meak will never inherit the earth, but they will be exploited by the left in a modern day sefdom, well on its way. Let them!!! The leftie elite knows exactly what it is doing. The righties who fell for this deserve the O-machine to perfection. I’m actually very schadenfreudig about it.

The “for the people” elite will suck them all dry.

Entelechy on February 17, 2009 at 3:10 PM

From my previous comment on another post. This fits right in.

Yeah the memorabilia stuff. It’s selling now because people will by it. Years from now it will still be worthless. Just like “collectable” Pokemon stuff. Same category.

Because everyone has one it will never be valuable.

I’m reminded of my father who worked at Kodak. He has one of their original cameras for sale. Really cool and it still works. But ebay one online and you’ll see that their worth $30 tops. Why? Kodak sold so many of them they are not hard to come by.

The Obama memorabilia marketers are laughing all the way to the bank.

shick on February 17, 2009 at 3:10 PM

This shouldn’t be a surprise to people. You can see the crappy sticker on the coin in the commercial. At least the cheesy 9/11 $20 bill was worth real money. You give the company $20 US and you get .31c in Liberian money in return. Sounds like a great deal to me.

txaggie on February 17, 2009 at 3:11 PM

The new presidential dollar coins come out with 4 presidential portraits per year. Which means that in 11 years, there will be plenty of real Obama coins.

Bigfoot on February 17, 2009 at 3:11 PM

The tv commercial is avialable at the link. They look like they are stickers around JFK’s face on the half dollar and Montel clearly tells the rubes that these are state quarters with B Hussein O’s image added.

I would not be surprised if they were made in Indonesia, just as, to at least some extent, Barry Soetoro himself was “made” there.

Edouard on February 17, 2009 at 3:14 PM

BWAAAAA! I collect coins and laughed out loud when these came out! It’s worse than buying coins from HSN. At least those are for real…at about 3 times the value…

sabbott on February 17, 2009 at 3:14 PM

Read about this yesterday and thought it absolutely fit the man. You have a glib speaker who got elected president (with some help from his fraudulent friends) and installs the Clinton government. What else would you expect from coins depicting this administration for a pretty stamp over an existing coin?
