Video: The fake Obama coins

posted at 2:35 pm on February 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Remember when we laughed about Barack Obama’s attempt to license his image? Maybe it could have prevented a bunch of suckers from losing their money in this pathetic bait and switch swindle. People paid a hundred dollars or more for Obama coins that turned out to be stickers over regular US currency (via Caleb Howe and Redstate):

Well, all I can say is caveat emptor, baby.  In fact, that would have been good advice for those wishing to vote for Obama, too.  The complaint about “false impressions” and “hidden costs” will get more than a few chuckles out of conservatives — grim chuckles, but chuckles nonetheless.  We’ve seen quite a few of both since the inauguration, and even some Obama voters have discovered the same thing.

Teddy’s too ill to comment, but someone has to ask a few of the Kennedy clan what they think about pasting Obama over JFK’s image.

“Um, you know, I think that Barack Obama is, you know, a great president, and, you know…”

Snowed In on February 17, 2009 at 3:27 PM

I would suggest peeling off 2 of the stickers
and placing them over your eyes for the next 4 years.
UGLY! UGLY! UGLY!

elderberry on February 17, 2009 at 3:28 PM

20 bucks for 1.75$ with corny stickers on them hahahaha. The commercial is still airing here.

goat on February 17, 2009 at 2:52 PM

Some brainiac has that capitalism thing down pat.

At least pet rocks were what they were, nothing more. A gimmick. Too many people think Obama’s not a gimmick, and that’s the problem.

RickZ on February 17, 2009 at 3:28 PM

I love the smell of allegory in the morning…smells like 2010 victory.

jon1979 on February 17, 2009 at 3:25 PM

LOL! They pasted B Hussein O’s picture around JFK’s image on the fifty cent piece, and they pasted BHO over Washington on the quarter, but left IL & HI showing on the back

OmahaConservative on February 17, 2009 at 3:31 PM

They were already sold a bill of goods.
What’s a couple of more coins?

JellyToast on February 17, 2009 at 3:33 PM

Powerful symbolism there, with a hint of foreshadowing

Vashta.Nerada on February 17, 2009 at 3:35 PM

What would you pay for these Montel Willians sanctioned pieces of history. Don’t answer yet.

It’s a coin, it’s a sticker, it’s a mouthwash.

It could only be gooder if Shamwow Vince were hawking them.

hawkdriver on February 17, 2009 at 3:38 PM

Buyers were just not paying attention.

jdpaz on February 17, 2009 at 2:43 PM

and in a related story, voters were just not paying attention last fall.

Vashta.Nerada on February 17, 2009 at 3:39 PM

I didn’t figure there to be a large market on HA although I know for a fact MediaHack bought two sets. One for him and one for his parents. (He felt he owed it to them for letting him stay in the basement)

hawkdriver on February 17, 2009 at 3:43 PM

Hmmmm. I guess people are already starting to feel a great deal of buyers remorse when it comes to Mr. President.

manajordan on February 17, 2009 at 3:45 PM

It works on so many levels. America bought the same life-sized version.

Claypigeon on February 17, 2009 at 2:57 PM

True, the irony of this is very sweet indeed and it has put a smile on my face!

However THIS America didn’t buy a damn thing the Empty Suited One was selling unlike the other 57% of the America that did, you know, the 57% of America that PT Barnum was speaking of when he said, “there’s a sucker born every minute…”

Liberty or Death on February 17, 2009 at 3:45 PM

I have a “Barack Obama” penny in my pocket. It’s real shiny and new, and it looks real good, but it ain’t worth two cents.

Alternative Headlines: Change you can’t believe in (already “coined” by other posters) or Obama Sticker Shock.

Dilophos on February 17, 2009 at 3:52 PM

The big silver JFK head facing sideways should have been a dead giveaway.

Nope he confirmed today.

I can’t wait until they come out with Obama TP… I’ll buy 100 rolls!

CynicalOptimist on February 17, 2009 at 3:58 PM

Once you look behind the shiny lable all you find is a sticky, gooey mess.

TN Mom on February 17, 2009 at 4:11 PM

I’m giggling my head off… Just too perfect.

But my fave comment so far?

I ordered my Obama puppy and they sent me a squirrel with a picture of Lassie skotch-taped to it’s head.

fogw on February 17, 2009 at 2:57 PM

I can barely breathe! And squirrels ARE evil. :)

tickleddragon on February 17, 2009 at 4:22 PM

Look for him at the next presidential ‘townhall’ meeting, he’ll be sure to get the sympathy and help of his president…

FLKraKa on February 17, 2009 at 4:24 PM

Hey wait a minute…If we pull off obama’s sticker who will behind that mask? I’m so confused…….

rich801 on February 17, 2009 at 4:25 PM

Hopefully, those Obama condoms sold at the immaculation were the real deal or we’ll be having a baby boom in September.

RalphyBoy on February 17, 2009 at 4:54 PM

And I got so steamed last fall when TVLand replaced Star Trek at 6am with that stinkin’ Montel infomercial. AAAAAHHHHAA now I can laugh.

Brat on February 17, 2009 at 4:57 PM

Oh, and in my home-town of Portland too! :(

Tzetzes on February 17, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Obama supporters feeling suckered. Ahhh…the feeling will get sweeter as the years go by and the pictures fade on those flea market grade coins.

Hold onto them. They be worth money someday because paper money won’t be worth spit in a couple of years.

RadioFreeUSA on February 17, 2009 at 5:20 PM

another tragic anecdote showing, once again, that a brothas worst enemy is… anotha brotha.
Way to go Montel. Barry and you must be using the same vetting agency.

/ouch

dragonlord on February 17, 2009 at 5:36 PM

This is outrageous… outrageous! The buyers were victims of trickology. They should be made whole. It seems only right that this be addressed in Porkulous II. You gotta protect the little guy.

thegreatbeast on February 17, 2009 at 5:38 PM

Hey, he’s been a rip off since the election..why not the coins……birds of a feather.

GarandFan on February 17, 2009 at 5:42 PM

These were not the coins I knew….LOL

aceman1096 on February 17, 2009 at 5:46 PM

If this ain’t a metaphor for the real O, then I don’t know what is. A coin with a sticker over it and Obama, a run of the mill Cook Crook County politician covered with the sticker of lies and false promises.

Pelayo on February 17, 2009 at 5:46 PM

The perfect metaphor, for Obama’s legacy.

right2bright on February 17, 2009 at 5:49 PM

Flip an Obama coin; it always comes up tails.

Pelayo on February 17, 2009 at 5:51 PM

It kinda reminds me of the wizard behind the curtain. Just peel it away to see the real president.

kringeesmom on February 17, 2009 at 5:52 PM

I just spent 30 seconds doing my own investigation and the 5th result on Google linked to an article warning about this rip-off dated *Tuesday November 11, 2008*.

The No. 1 search result was HA. :D

Looks like the biggest loser in this situation was the news guy.

racecar05 on February 17, 2009 at 6:04 PM

You mean Obama is a fake image pasted over the real thing and sold to dupes for an exorbitant amount?

Knock me over with the shadow of a feather!

profitsbeard on February 17, 2009 at 6:05 PM

I gotta’ admit, this is pretty funny.

Y-not on February 17, 2009 at 6:08 PM

Pretty disappointed in Montel for participating in this scam. Of course he also always has that one fake psychic on so not much can be said for his judgment.

Typhonsentra on February 17, 2009 at 6:14 PM

ShamWow-in-Chief!

profitsbeard on February 17, 2009 at 6:18 PM

LOL! My libtard neighbor ordered eight sets for the grandchildren he is raising (parents are in prison for drugs, and a set for himself and his wife. I was delighted to tell him about this today when he got home as his haven’t shipped yet.
Hee-Hee-Hee!!!

OmahaConservative on February 17, 2009 at 6:29 PM

CynicalOptimist on February 17, 2009 at 3:58 PM

Care to make an investment?

AllosaursRus on February 17, 2009 at 6:34 PM

Just like Obama himself a false promise.

thmcbb on February 17, 2009 at 6:48 PM

I work Customer service SELLING these things…(among the 100′s of other products I take calls for….)I am LMAO…

Sweet justice….these have to be the stupidest callers I get. I’ve been tortured for the past 3 months with these calls.

but there is NO fraud or ripoff here…every caller knows exactly what they are getting.

elraphbo on February 17, 2009 at 7:24 PM

stupid.

I remember seeing these commercials, and even then you could tell they were crap. this isn’t a surprise in the slightest.

cabbageheat on February 17, 2009 at 7:46 PM

Heads they win tails you lose. If you bought this crap, you got what you deserved. They’re probably the same people that buy scratch-off lottery tickets. Losers.

godhelpus on February 17, 2009 at 7:57 PM

Scratch off Obama lottery tickets?

…hmmmm….

Not a bad idea. Maybe you could win a free kitchen or a Republican’s house or something.

Dr. ZhivBlago on February 17, 2009 at 9:30 PM

Didn’t see the first page, so if this is a duplicate, my apologies.

It appears that the maker of these “coins” knew their target market precisely. Obama voters should be easy marks for this kind of scam. Sadly, pretty much any other kind of scam for that matter.

AZfederalist on February 17, 2009 at 9:59 PM

Duh… since when are coins in color? C’mon people, think! It’s not that hard once you get used to it.

bitsy on February 18, 2009 at 12:01 AM

This isn’t that shocking, but if they come out and say that Snuggies are just big robes put on backwards, I’m going to be OUTRAGED!!!

Abby Adams on February 17, 2009 at 2:44 PM

How dare you even suggest that!?
